25443, Why let Slum Village grab the MIC?
Posted by cpoindex, Mon Apr-03-00 02:38 PM
I personally can't get with Slum Village. Though the Production is off the Heezy, Lyrically these kids come weaker than a Diet Shirley Temple.BUT, that's just my opinion. I am not posting to Hate but I have two questions?

1. Does anyone really really like SLUM VILLAGE?
2. Would these kids be on LWFC or rhyming period if they did not have that JAY DEE Hookup?
25444, Retraction
Posted by cpoindex, Mon Apr-03-00 02:57 PM
On Second thought, Please disregard my last Post. After Reading some of the other more recent Post. It occured to me that it is poor taste, to dig into someone so unconstructively. Honestly, how constructive will the discussion be around someone posting "LWFC is wack"? If you don't dig it cool. If you have constructive criticism articulate it, but to posting something provocative and incendinary just to get a response & attention really is rude & a waste of everyone times?
25445, Their mic presence IS weak though, you have the right to express your feelings on that

i doubt anybody would be on without some love. it is who you know, not what you know.

the thing i like 'bout them is that they ride the beats, and have fun. and that i can feel the giggles in their shit. maybe they aren't there - but it's got a real personal - chill - pick me up and let's go to the mall - playin' nba live/ dreamcast feel to it.

it reminds me of simpler times. everything doesn't need to be political or whatever, sometimes you gotta say...

Man do i hate that. What, you ask? I hate when someone is wack and fools make up an excuse such as 'it reminds me of simpler times', or 'they like to have fun'. EFF THAT! There are plenty of emcees who can have fun, and come tight as hell. Common is one.. Pharoahe Monch, Kweli at times.. etc. So quit makin up bullshit excuses for emcees who simply don't bring it.
25448, did you even read what i said?
Posted by bfnh, Mon Apr-03-00 04:02 PM
you throw away my points that they ride beats and that the music is simple and fun to say they are wack yet you provide no reason why you feel they are.

but you offer nothing to the dialogue on why you think they are wack or not. just a personal attack huh? so you can come again or let your illegitimate use of flame be your bastard ass legacy. you could be a father to your words, and try to raise a lil' something, or just let it ride - your choice...

i understand your rage, i get mad too, but if you don't want to come out looking like a "fool," by stating that you 'are tired' as your "bullshit excuses" - i'd like to say

BANH - wrong anser to your shit pie of a post.

Did you not like Tribe?

You act like Tip and Phife were the two tightest lyricist of all time. Tip is straight, but Phife was the fucking worse. The rode beats wonderfully though (Same as Slum). Everybody in Slum rhymes better than Phife. So don't come with that shit.

what? who? phife? this has been driving me crazy since i came to this site. if phife was so wack, how the hell did we make it through 5 albums with him rhyming? phife was cool, hes not krs or anyone, but the fucking worse? all of slum is better? phife caried a couple of songs in his day.
1) can i kick it(the remix fit him perfectly)
2) vibes and stuff(classic ass phife verse. simple but hot)
3) butter
4) bugin out
5) scenario
6) phony rappers
7) god lives through(he didnt carry it, but neither did tip)
8) steppin it up(the worse verse of tip's carrer. kept d.j.'s from skipping the tribe part)
so in closing i'm not saying phife is the best, but ill be damned if he's garbage. thats just crazy.

obviously there is a lot of sv haters on this site and a lot of people who like them. But, why does the question what is so good about them? alway's come up. you should be able to answer that question for yourself. either you like them or you don't, it's that simple. maybe your searching for reasons to like them because you feel left out cause you don't like them. you tell me. i like their music. period. i like their beats, i like their rhymes, and i like their style. your opinion could be different from mine. fine, that's okay, no one is going to kill you for that. so that being said, don't forget to check out sv live in toronto at the reverb on april 20. peace!

Just like I told the other dude, YOU ALL have to learn that there is a difference between LIKING something and it BEING GOOD. Someone can like Noreaga if they want... I don't care. But he's STILL wack. Y'all can like Slum... who cares. They STILL have weak rhymes.

Why do heads gotta be haters cuz they don't like SV? I'll admit that I don't care too much about what they're rhyming about, but that don't mean I hate 'em...I DON'T EVEN KNOW THEM!

I get so sick of this "they haters cuz they disagree with me" bs!!

Uh, I don't have ANY Slum yet, so I have no idea who's dropping which verse on "Thelonious." Can somebody give me the order?

Incidentally, I assume the verse Quest, the Source, et al didn't like was the first one ("gotta make money all my life/gotta stay fucking bitches left and right"). I know it's misogynistic and not all that technical, but for some reason I still feel that verse. Dude is crisp on the beat, although I freely admit I could just like him because I'm still bugging out to the beat that early in the song.

Fuck this. Ima do a seperate thread to talk about this song. But do tell me who spits what.

This cat I could do without. I thought he came with some interesting mentals (like wanting to go to paradise but not wanting to die) but his voice was grating. The other Slum I've heard leads me to the same opinion--I just don't care for his voice (H8R ALERT!! H8R ALERT!! CALL THE OKPOLICE!!)

well, some of y'all remember me as the ultimate Slum Village hater. I shit on them constantly for the early history of Okayplayer.com. Last month, I procured my own personal copy of Fantastic Vol. 2 to see if I was premature in my actions. I have come to enjoy Jay Dee's beats often (although a lot of the shit can sound similar on occasion). the rhymes are the same way, Sometimes they have a dope ass rhymeflow and lyrics that make me dig their shit, and other times they sound like a poor man's tribe...they're decent though.

The guy who comes last on "Thelonius" comes decent with the rhyme structure, and flow, but his lyrics weren't that impressive. The other 2 are just weak.

And to bfnw... or whoever, I forget. Duh, I don't like em cause a) their flow is ok, but not impressive b) their lyrics are weak. These are valid reasons.

So continue to like them because they 'have fun'. I'll continue to like dope emcees.

Okay, well isn't it your job as the executive producer to say that his verse wasn't good enough to be on the record? I mean, I imagine it would be mad awkward to have to tell any emcee that their verse didn't make the cut, but I'm sayin. That verse really hurts the vibe of the entire song. It should have been cut or at the least rewritten. Is it that awkward to ask a cat to write another verse? I mean, you said y'all made a ton of beats for the album, right? How's come you can throw a dozen sub-par Jay Dee beats back in the crates, but can't tell his boy to go back and rewrite his verse?

There is a thin line between negativity and the craft of criticism and though Fans and Artist may hate critics, it is the critic who solidifies an artist's place in history. Remember, "Hating" is a term created by the untalented to defend their wackness. Love.

They are signed to Indie label Goodvibe Records. IT's the same Vol. 2 album. So check for it. And i still thinkl that JAy Dee's is the best part of the group. I think they stepped up on Thelonuis but they still can't hang. And their whole album is redundant, how many songs can you talk about pimp ish and how this B***Th wants you blah blah. But there flows are interesting.

Help out the Weldon Irvine's Amadou Project which features Q-Tip and Blackstar and call 516-481-5354

Hip Hop Quotable's

Nigga, no doubt. Nigga get live get knocked the fuck out. (Jay Dee)

A nigga thas...Fresh as the Fest, studied this rap shit no need to mic test. You can feel it in ya chest (ooooh). (Common)

Still doin this shit like dude in Wildstyle.(Common) (he's talking about Grandmaster Caz-ol boy STILL makin' records!)

Invitin wack niggaz to dinner. I Trick Daddy mc's and I don't know... Nann Nigga who can take it where I take it. You better go into God like Mase did.(Common)

OK, If Jay Dee's verse does not get Hip-Hop quotable in the Source...

Stay on ya mind like great sex.
You aint on my mind i'm thinkin bout paychecks.
Niggaz large like a 8x Avirex jacket
Come to gunz they bust like latex sex packets.

Mc's they dont rhyme an' ball
They lyin' to y'all
They dyin' to ball
The rhyme we do all the time(wha)
Run thru all the fine
Bitches they fall in line

THE FLOW ON THAT LINE WAS THE SICKEST SHIT I'VE HEARD ALL YEAR!!

No offense to T3 and Bataan but Com and Jay were so sick their lyrics almost didn't matter.

'Don't worry 'bout what the fuck I be doin'- Smokey

'I'M SO ANGRY'-My 2 year old daughter Tamera
25493, Check "Go ladies"......
Posted by Eccentric, Thu Apr-06-00 08:17 PM
"Scooping up the ladies like a spachala..ah
Knowing damn well I ain't no bachelah..ah"

They're not the most complex, but they fit the beats perfectly. They're voices and delivery add another element to the beat.

"Voice as an instrument" - Common

"I don't care if he's rhyming to a test signal or an effin relaxation tape...it's the LYRICS!"
- dafriquan on Ras Kass

"Scooby snack jurrasic plastic gats booby trapped"
See I flipped the -ic like that, nahwamean? I don't care if ya'll don't understand what I'm saying, I'm da only nigga dat can do dat shit.
- Ghost

Son, do you even understand the SlumV vibe? First of all, don't forget these cats is from Detroit, so you know they not from the hip hop capital. But what they are is tight, their flows ain't complicated, and its all about a good vibe and stutter step rhymes. I mean nobody's trying to pass them off as the next lyrical geniuses, but they do have the tightest producer of all time, that n!gga, Jay Dee. And I don't remember if it was you but all the members of SV is homies from way back in the day, T3 and Baatin didn't jump on the Jay Dee bandwagon, SV was the plan all along. Well I'm signing off, but these cats are tight, just respect the style, and don't hate.
