23443, Radio Adds on The Light
Posted by label_guy, Tue Jun-13-00 05:23 PM
As promised in an earlier post, here's the rundown:
"The Light" was added on 52 urban radio stations in its first week of official radio adds. Common was tied with Eve Feat Jadakiss for 3rd most added. Sisqo was #1 most added with 71 adds.
Key stations adding "The Light" in the first week are:
WUSL & WPHI/Philly
KKBT/LA
V-103/Atlanta
WEDR/Miami
WQUE/New Orleans
WENZ/Cleveland
WDTJ/Detroit
WQOK/Raleigh
WOWI/Norfolk VA (my hometown...what!)
On the other hand, WGCI/Chicago fronted this week but will probably be in next week and Hot 97/NYC & WPGC/DC are just plain frontin' right now.
On the crossover radio side:
Power 106/LA is playing it 31 week ranked #19
KMEL/SF - 39 spins ranked #11
Z90/San Diego & KUBE/Seattle added "The Light" this week.

If y'all are really feeling like you want to look out for your boy Cornbread, call any one of the stations above if you're in the market and tell'em to play the damn record. If you don't feel like doing that, respond to my earlier "Dice Raw's Greatest Verses" post.

That is all for now....Common is supposed to be in De La's video shoot tomorrow in LA & he is shooting MTV's Lyricist Lounge on Friday.

That's it....its 8:25pm and I am going home.

I THINK THAT THE CITY THAT I AM FROM IS FINALLY SEEING "THE LIGHT" one day as i'm walking in my house from class i hear..." there are times, when you need someone..." and as i was just about to curse out my roomie for listening to my cd w/o my permission, i hear someone yelling through the speakers QQQQQQQQQQQQQ-93!!!!! AS im yelling what the fuck i smile and realize that the radio station that only plays, Carl Thomas, Toni Braxton,Big Tymers, 504 Boys, and the Hot Boys actually has on some common. wtf!!! yes all you okayplayers who are planning to be in new orleans during the essence festival i think you may be alright. just don't expect to hear anything but "the light", "untitled", or "you got me". if you try to request anything else they will laugh at you. i know from personal experience!!!!!!!!

WPGC/DC are just plain frontin' right now.

Maaan please forgive our shaky radio stations. I'm ashamed to say that they used the track for THE LIGHT to make they're own "Positive, Stop tha Violence" song and won't even play COM during tha day.

I was so mad that I was hearing both "The Light" and "Assata" instrumentals behind these WPGC commercials/promos. They even did THEIR OWN stop the violence song over "Assata."

I was wondering why the heck these DC stations are not supporting Com's music. I heard "The Light" in WKYS yesterday (I think it was yesterday) but it was during a mix show. I havent heard it yet during regular rotation.

... I did, however, hear D's "Chicken Grease" on Russ Parr yesterday.

Exactly J_Sun... then they always are trying to claim that they play Common a lot and are the first to play some ish when there are all of these stations around the country that have added the Light first... before Com can even get play in his hometown.

What y'all don't know about radio (well some of you) is that some of the stations (like WGCI) ARE playing the record but did'nt ADD it. All 'label guy's' around the country care about is the 'add' even though a record may get the same amount of spins without the add.

Don't blame us cuz you hate the radio, believe me 'The Light' in rotation aint gonna change the fact that you outgrew listening to the radio. But it's okay, player.

Class dismissed.

I didn't know you were from Hampton Roads labelguy. But wow you're bringing up some old memories. I used to record the 4 o'clock rap attack everyday with HJ Ellison on WRAP...those were the days.

And good looking to WOWI (103 Jamz) for adding the light the first week and getting a nightly show that showcases more underground ish, but it's still loaded with DMX & Cash Money. Oh well...

23463, About Hot 97...
Posted by DeePhunk, Thu Jun-15-00 04:49 AM
Even though Hot 97 may front on a regular basis with adding good music to their rotation, there are a couple of DJs that will break out the regular list and play some dope stuff.

Just this morning (on Satr & Buc Wild's show), DJ Enuff played "The Light" on his morning Rush Hour show. And afterwards they were all giving it props. Miss Jones was like "That's my JAAAAM!" Unfortunately, the only DJs you'll probably catch playing that on Hot 97 every now and then are Enuff, Red Alert and Mister Cee.

I heard it on Power 106 (l.a.). I just happend to catch it while fast forwarding my Voodoo tape. I was like "Heeeeyyy!!" That's the first time I've listened to the radio since Voodoo came out.

The other day I was pulling into the parking lot at work and one of my co-workers pulled in bumpin Funky For You. Here's the convo:

Me: Heeeeyyy! What cho' know 'bout Common?
(like I know a lot right--i'm a newbie)
Her: (laughs)
Me: That shit is tight, huh?

I just wanted to let ya'll know that Common is doing well in Miami. His current single, The Light, is gaining more and more in popularity at WEDR/99JAMZ here in South Florida. Also, D'Angelo's current single, "Send It On," is gettin' a lot of airplay as well!!!

LabelGuy:

I wanna get some thoughts off my chest, concerning, Common getting airplay on radio-stations around the country. As Okayplayer members and fans of conscious-style hip-hop, we need to stop hatin' or spittin' on other folks musical taste, just because they haven't opened up their minds to other forms of music that somebody else may like. The "If you don't like this kind of music, you ain't s**t" attitude gotta stop. Yeah, I grew up listening to Luke, 2 Live Crew, NWA, MC Eiht, and what not, but, I also grew up listening to Rakim, EPMD, Freddie Foxxx, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap, etc. Just because I grew up in Florida, don't mean I don't know a damn thing about "New York Style Hip-Hop," because, I do. So, next time someone comes out the mouth dissin' a particular state or region, get your muthaf'n facts straight, otherwise, don't say anything at all!!!
