Am I the only one who thinks Common is an alcholic? He says many a line about his battle with alcohol and his troubles with it. So he is an alcholic right? Y'all?

Good for him he's an alcoholic - Common's a grown man, he can do whatever the fuck he wants when it comes to escaping reality.

He is an alcoholic, yes. This has no positive or negative connotation - its simply a fact.

But lets not embelish the fact with imaginings like, "com just stumbles around all day sloshed" cuz it probably isn't true.

You gotta be semi sober to do those costume changes and business. BTW - WTF is up with that? I mean, I can understand making the show a whole big production and shit (I guess?) but at the same time I want my rappaz spittin with no frills, nawmean?

Goodness, as someone who knows Common pretty damn well, I can tell you he is not a Muslim.

Where are you getting your information? Because he might have Islam-tinged lyrics once in a while?

If I say "Oh Jesus! That's a nice car!" does that make me Christian?

Interesting, I don't think many people who aren't Muslim would start their album thank yous by saying: "I thank the almighty god allah, though i thank you everyday it makes me even prouder to proclaim your name to the world. Thank you for life, thank you for music, thank you for my family, thank you for the good times and the bad times, thank you for being you and as I travel this journey towards perfection I ask that you use me to reflect your light and spread love to all mankind. I dedicate this album back to you because from you it came. Your servant... Rashid."

But then again, I'm sure you'd know better than anyone else (except Common of course) :).

I'm not sayin you're right or wrong, I got problems of my own, if Common wants to come post about this, cool, but...

>"Angel on my main shoulder tellin
>me reamin sober"

Sober has many meanings. It doesn't have to refer to alcoholism.

>"Time Travelin'" "Stakes is high, like
>my uncle is, we both
>got problems, but he never
>confronted his"

Everyone has "problems"...you get that Common has the illness known as alcoholism because he says he has problems just like his uncle?

>"Reminding me of Sef" .."Driftin' on
>a memory brought forth from
>a fifth of Hennesey..."

"Boy, I was sitting with my girls yesterday, sipping white wine..."

Does that make me an alcoholic?

>"One too many ni**as" "...Plus
>it's hard to be me,
>it's hard to stop drinkin..."

>You can't tell me that this
>guy is not struggling with
>alcoholism.

I can tell you that you can't say "IS" unless you've spoken to COMMON recently. Going on rhymes written a while back only leads to rumor spreadin'.

I mean, if you were going to pick a lyric, at least pick a good one like "dealing with alcoholism and Afrocentricity..."

Common uses a lot of metaphors and similes. When he says "it doesn't take a whole day to recognize sunshine", the brother ain't talking about his curtains are too opaque.

Yes, you'd stick up for your friends just the same,

I'm the first to admit I've got my own problems, and I'm not trying to dis Com, I'm just trying to say that, for better or worse, it appears he is struggling or has struggled in the past with alcohol from the emense number of alcohol refrences in his lyrics. This in no way needs to be seen as a negative comment toward the man. It's a fact of life that many people deal with on the daily...

>>"Time Travelin'" "Stakes is high, like
>>my uncle is, we both
>>got problems, but he never
>>confronted his"
>
>Everyone has "problems"...you get that Common

Yes, because that is one of dozens of references to substance abuse in Com's lyrics. But he's saying he's confronted his problems--whatever they might be..

>>"Reminding me of Sef" .."Driftin' on
>>a memory brought forth from
>>a fifth of Hennesey..."
>
>"Boy, I was sitting with my

No, but there are many people whose bodies react to alcohol like it is poison, so if you can get your drink on without it running your life then you're on the plus side of things...

Do you think the ones I chose are irrelavent? I was going to post that one, but I didn't know just how to tie it in...

Really?

I feel you--I have done a lot of thinking about this subject while listening to Common, and I hope the struggles are behind him...
22702, so you know
Posted by guest, Wed Jul-19-00 10:22 AM

>>>You can't tell me that this
>>>guy is not struggling with
>>>alcoholism.

It's statements like this that get to me. Conclusions drawn up on lyrics that were written a while back. Lyrics where Common never ever said "I have a drinking problem."

>I'm not tryin' to spread rumors--I'm
>tryin' to interpret some lyrics...

I hear you, and I'm just responding to your interpretation knowing the man who wrote the lyrics.

>Do you think the ones I
>chose are irrelavent?

I think they *could* be a stretch. A big one.

I'll let Com speak fo' his damn self. Thing is, I don't see how anyone, having NEVER had a long personal conversation with the artist, can assume their religion or mental health state based on old lyrics. And then present it as almost fact, or damn near.

(the religion one is not referring to you, of course.)

Best to you, I'm not feeling the tone of the original post for some reason (maybe it's just me) and I don't want to push it up anymore.

I always took his lyrics to mean that he had(in the past)a drinking problem, but that with time and determination he got over it. He talks about it a lot on "Book of Life" so check it out for yourselves.

I'm slow with these kinda things, so I thought for a while that the 40 he's holding on the back of "can I borrow a dollar?" was for real, but now I'm pretty sure its just a bum prop. (like the garbage can fire)

Regardless of whether Com is an alcoholic or not, alcoholism is not something that you lose or are cured of, even if you don't drink for 5 months. It's something you always struggle with. that you understand what I said, I meant that if at any time a person was considered an alcoholic or had a dependency on alcohol or whatever, that he would always be an alcoholic, even if he didn't have a drink for 10 years. It looks to me after listening to common, reading what ya'll had to say about this declared homophobic that he had a problem with alcohol and I guess He's still a fighter, and he works hard to battle his struggle with it? It also seems that this isn't the metaphorical common speaking with his rhymes. He speaks about it on each of his albums, as he does with Homosexuality, and how he hates it hands down. I don't see how that could be a metaphore or similie of any sort.Unless..." Gays are like a box of chocolates you never.... Nah!" So IN conclusion unless someone can prove me wrong about common using alcoholism as a metaphore then I'm going to assume that he is a recovering alcholic.
22724, my question is...

why does it matter? people in the spotlight need some shit to remain private. i dont' care if it is on a record. okay, we bought it, we heard, so WE ALREADY KNOW. the old saying says it best, "everything that's said doesn't need to be known and everything that's known doesn't need to be said." in other words just keep it to yourself. if he's an alcoholic AND? we all have problems and vices that we need to deal with PRIVATELY! leave bruh alone. i feel sorry for celebs, can't have shit to themselves. not even their damn problems.

Which track did you here that on? I don't recall Common talking about he had an alcohol problem. I also read a lot of his articles. He didn't say anything in them about dealing with alcohol.

"Dealing with alcoholism and afrocentricity..." (Commmon "The Sixth Sense")

That's the only thing I can think of. And that line doesn't mean he's going through it. To my knowledge, that line means those are things he's dealt with...those are things that he's seen.

1-9-9-9 " Angel on my main shoulder telling me to remain shoulder" Now if it doesn't sound like he's battling alcholism with those 2 lines (and there are more) then I don't know what you are listening to exactly.

Just listen to all his albums, and take note of how many references he makes to alcohol. Check my reply to this post called "check these references" there are a few examples in there....
