2114, Ask Jill Scott (Okayplayers interview Jill Scott!)
Posted by Fiver, Thu Sep-09-04 02:00 PM
Who has a burning question they need answered by our resident chart-topper, Jill Scott?

Act as a grand inquistor below. Questions will be collected at sunset on Friday, September 17. Jill and the Okayplayer staff will sift through the wreckage and pick those to be answered.

Any questions? GOOD!

*What male and/or female singers ("new school") would you like to work with?

*Who are the artists that you're "feeling" right now?

*Have you considered writing for other artists?

*On the new album, I can definitely hear the Minnie Riperton influences. When did you discover her? What were your initial impressions? What song(s) "sold" you on her?

*Are you more nervous performing live concerts or singing in the studio?

Thats interesting because when my wife and i first listened to the Beautifully Human record i said to her...'you know in spots she sounds like Minnie.'

...in certain tunes her voice definitely takes on a Minnie-esque vibe i remember from the Adventures in Paradise / Perfect Angel era. Some of the themes and phrasing and 'vibes' are similar too. Jill's definitely got her OWN thing going too of course, but when those Minnie moments happened they were SO 'Minnie' sounding i remembered wondering if Jilly was a Minnie fan (hard not to be a fan of those two records at least isn't it?) and i wondered if she did it intentionally as sort of a tribute to Minnie or something.

You are my wifes #1 favorite artist, Meshell Ndegeocello is my #1 favorite...are you into any of Meshells stuff (such as her latest 'Comfort Woman')? and more importantly have you ever entertained the thought of working with her on any projects? With all of the 'reallness' and heart each of you put into your work i think a collab with the two of you would turn out something amazing indeed. If you two put out a record or toured together THAT would be something special....and my wife and i would BOTH be simultaneously going banannas:)

You are very vocal about loving and respecting black men. Do you ever feel that black men have not done enough (on their own) to earn the respect of black women who are holding the family down solo? Do you ever feel let down by the choices some of the black men that do achieve success make (I am thinking Kobe and his infamous crime of 'adultery')?
Also, what was your initial reaction to Bill Cosby's criticism of poor and lower middle class blacks? Has that changed at all because of the follow-up comments Cosby has repeatedly made?

How much of your success can you attribute (not just musically) to the positive relationship with your husband? I ask this question as a man because I don't think we(men)learn how important loving someone is until wisdom sets in. I'm far from perfect when it comes to showing that to my wife, but when I listen to you sing about your feelings...it gives me great clues to where I need to be. Most of all, I just want to thank you for exposing so much of yourself.

Some of the points you made in your question (about her marriage and the songs ) I so experience when listening to this album. I am not married yet, but the love that she is experiencing from her marriage and that she sings about gives me hope in black love again (not that I lost it or not that I have an issue with interacial dating) but it is good seeing real love and experiencing its creation through music. It is inspirational and encouraging. Thank you Jill if you are reading this

Posted by Cerebrawler, Mon Sep-13-04 08:01 AM
Is there any chance of a jam with you and the roots to do something off the Max Roach "We Insist! Freedom Now Suite"?

I don't know if it was "Freedom Day" or "Tears for Johannesburg" but the first time I heard this album I thought this would be good with Amir on the sticks and Jill doing Abbey Lincoln's part. The singing isn't always traditional vocals but the range reminded me of you.

this is a variation of my mom's question(What's up with Jill Scott thanking Jehovah in her cd notes?):
What made you use 'Jehovah' to identify as the God you worship?
The only celebrities publicly to declare his name are The Williams' sisters & Prince.

What did you appreciate and dislike about your acting stint on Girlfriends? How would you have written the arc of the story & its ending?

What kind of Roots fan are you? What do you think of each Roots release?

Given the state of the music industry, what would you change or improve?

What is your view of term NEO-SOUL & being labeled or cropped in with similarly styled music artists?

Posted by eldealo, Mon Sep-13-04 09:19 AM
i enjoyed the show, but considering the price of $40 per ticket, a lot of folks left bimbo's 365 club disappointed. wasn't sure if that was on the promoters for not putting it out there that it was more of a warm-up performance? i just thought that could have been more up front.

"You would think that by 1980 there would've been a lot of songs about head, but apparently there weren't. I can see why there haven't been any since (other than rap songs of course, of which there've been plenty). How was anybody really going to improve on this? I definitely need to have this song playing the next time I get my knob shined. In fact, where's my wallet? Shit, I'm broke." --->> Byron Crawford on "Head".

2155, Jill, I got some questions if you've got the time
Posted by , Mon Sep-13-04 11:35 AM
The time that you took off to make this album manifests in the music. Both your lyrics and your voice have matured wonderfully. But what were you up to during that time? Musically and personally (not to be all up in your buisness tho. *smile*) I remember seeing a video on BET for a song that you did (about a year ago) but it was never released. Brown sugar baby, or something close to that was the title... it was a great song. Will you ever consider releasing it?

The song, "The fact is (I need you)," what inspired you to write it? Is it a call to action for all men? If so, we need to work on making that your next single *smile*. It is a wonderful song, showing both the strength of the female, but also the importance of a man in a family. 'And even though I can do all these things (By my DAMN self)... I need you.' beautiful.

Will you be doing another live album anytime soon? Or working with the roots anytime soon?

Also, Would you cover 'Great gig in the sky' w/ The Roots? It's one of Pink Floyd's best songs. I hope you've had a chance to hear it at this point; if not, please do. Jill, with you on the female vocals, and the roots doing the instrumentals, i think it has the potential to be a great cover song. Your voice would carry so nicely over the music. Thats not so much a question, just hoping you guys would consider it.

and girl, you were right on point with your song "cross my mind." 'you were never good for me, and i was never good for you. i just remember what we usta do.'
go 'head girl! :D

Thank you for such a wonderful, intelligent, inspiring album. It was well worth the wait. And I will wait again.

Amel Larrieux, I feel like I know you, but of course I really don't know any of you. It would be great to at least get a photo with you one day when you are visiting the Bay Area.

MY QUESTION?, CAN YOU BE MY PLAY SISTER?

I'm a grown ass woman but you inspire me. Just the other night my six year old son and I were trying to translate "Golden" into spanish...(we're black tho') Okay I'll shut up now.

Thanks for believing in yourself and living your life like it's golden as you inspire unsure regular folks - letting them know that it's alright to be all that God made you.
