20166, d'angelo aint no marvin
Posted by guest, Fri Jan-19-01 02:35 PM
d'angelo aint no marvin gaye.. d'angelo is good but he aint no marvin gaye not him or any other soul singer today.. but he has only released 2 cd's in 5 years.. when marvin first came out he had back to back cd's the first 2 years and two cd release in the third..

dig

Can i get a witness - 1963
How sweet it is - 1964
Aint that peculiar AND I'll be doggone - 1965

okay so those 3 cd's weren't his prime work but ...

whats going on - 1971
trouble mand - 1972
lets get it on - 1973
i want you - 1976
Here my dear - 1978
sexual healing - 1982

not to mention the endless duo's that he did with tammi terrell, kim weston, ona page, diana ross ect...... the man was pushing out cd's every 9 months like he was giving birth! and they were all slamming... in addition to this he managed to get married twice, have a family, get hooked on drugs, and finally get shot and killed...

D'angelo releases a hell of cd we don't here from him for 5 years except for maybe a few song soundtracks and some rumors comes back releases another and now what!!! if he is following in marvin's shoes he got some big feet to fill...

just my opinion

20167, you're right
Posted by Dove, Fri Jan-19-01 03:06 PM
cuz if Marvin were still alive (may he R.I.P.) he'd prolly be bald or graying, with an older man's pot belly.... yeah he could still blow - but he could never go nekked.

quest, you have the bad habit of tearing down other artists to defend your peoples...see below...

man, you need to stop that shit. like every note D played or sung was perfect. no shit, nobody has the # 1 perfect track record where everything they put out, down to the last note, is gold. you could have stopped with "D is D" without disparaging Marvin Gaye.

Stop that shit, for real...the worse example of it is when you slam Primo to defend Jay Dee...really, stop that shit, please.

you saying this to the person who started this post in the first place?

>quest, you have the bad habit
>of tearing down other artists
>to defend your peoples...

i'm just stating "my opinion". what i'm supposed to be mr. pc up in this cause i co-own the site?

from my other scillion marvin gaye posts (for those that read em) know that i'm on marvin's dilz. and i don't see how making marvin more human is dissing him.

mostly everyone, including marvin himself loathes "dream of a lifetime"....that's why he left motown records. i'm stating a fact.

the "trouble man" score is a beautiful piece of work. but i don't consider it a "marvin gaye" album, like i consider "let's get it on" a marvin gaye album.

some of the songs on "midnight love" are 80's filler at best. half the time people can't separate a classic song from the album from which it came from (case in point "i used to love her"/ressurection) but again....this is my opinion.

and if y'all (especially you in the early days) expect me to "respect" someone's "opinion", then damnit why can't i get that same courtesy?

hey, call me lazy. i've been breaking down marvin's strength's and weakness since day one. i didn't mean to confuse those who felt i was disrespecting his legacy.

uh, i don't recall me proclaiming jay dee as hip hop's best producer, slamming primo. again, this is okayplayer's near 2nd year. and i'm tired of breaking down primo's best stabs, and why the sun rises from the east is a masterwork, etc. i just assume y'all know where i come from.

again....my opinion. respect mines.

I didn't address the person who started the thread because I don't appreciate their opinion on music enough to speak to them. Generally, I only respond to people who I respect on here. You see me in the middle of a lot of these posts by Chrishawn? Nope. Sometimes I succumb to responding to some dumb shit, but generally I only respond to people who are trying to make a reasonable argument that I completely disagree with. If someone says "Puff Daddy is the best lyricist", I'm not going to bother addressing it.

as for the primo/jay dee thing, that was mainly under the thread where you proclaimed Jay Dee the best producer ever. Basically, it looked like you were downplaying Primo's 10-plus years of producing with the "same drum sounds" argument, but without issuing the same level of critical analysis to Jay Dee's discography (i.e. Primo has weaknesses, but Jay Dee has none? You didn't list any weaknesses for jay, so that is the implication made). Here, you listed Marvin's weaknesses but didn't list D'Angelo's weaknesses, as if D is perfect. THAT'S my problem. You never (or very rarely) turn your critical analysis on your own folks when comparing them to others. You heard? Sure, you can clown R. Kelly in comparison to D, but D doesn't have flaws? God is the only one with no flaws....

great.. so you are saying you don't respect me since i started the post.. i don't know why i started the post. .well i do, i was reading time magazine and how they gave d'angelo best cd of the year for voodoo... and how he was bringing back marvin gaye.. then i looked at my marvin gaye collection of about 4 records and 2 cds and i thought to myself.. d'angelo has not even reached marvins level yet.. so i posted it to see what others think... so thats that.....

20179, let me rephrase...
Posted by spirit, Tue Jan-23-01 03:00 PM
The crux of what I wanted to say was, I didn't think "d'angelo is no marvin gaye because gaye put out X times more product in Y time" was a well reasoned argument, so I didn't respect that particular opinion enough to reply to it. Didn't mean to imply that I lack respect for you as a person, because I don't know you, even in the limited sense of knowing you through your posts here.

i think you're talking about "in our lifetime" (or, in its first incarnation, "love man"), could that be? as far as i know "dream of a lifetime" was released after marvins death, in 1985 (CBS).

i actually like "in our lifetime", at least in some of its aspects - and as a document, of course.

Yo, I could possibly see with Brown Sugar how someone could compare D and Marvin, but with Voodoo, that's like comparing Electric Ladyland to Innervisions. Both are dope as hell but they not even in the same category. D is headed in different direction musically than where Marvin was. So I don't even see how anyone could compare D to Marvin anymore. But that's just my opinion

_____

If she was quoting another post by saying "get hooked on drugs" etc. I didn't realize it, because I didn't recall any post being limited to those two points. Taken on face value, it looks the person was saying those were Marvin's only two accomplishments. WRITING is fundamental. Sarcasm doesn't come off well in text-based mediums unless written well.

And who the hell besides the above poster said those were Marvin's only accomplishments? I must have missed that...

20190, I double checked
Posted by spirit, Sun Jan-21-01 08:24 AM
Yeah, you quoted the original poster WAY out of context....out of all the accomplishments he/she listed for Marvin, you took out "hooked on drugs" and "shot and killed", so it came off like you thought those were Marvin's only accomplishments...I missed that you were making sarcastic commentary on the inclusion of those two items as "accomplishments".

still, I don't think that falls under "reading is fundamental". that falls under the subjective category of appreciating sarcasm, which is determined as much by the sharp wit of the writer as the sharp eye of the reader.

to put it simply, your sarcasm didn't come off well.

does..

"'what they do' video was too jiggy for mainstream b.e.t audience" ring a bell?

you went ahead and analyzed that sentence as if it wasn't complete SARCASM AND BULLSHIT...get it? people bitched on the site that it was too 'jiggy'...but like you pointed out..too jiggy for b.e.t is just completely ridiculous...do yah get it?..you floor me spirit...

20199, um, who was that guy?
Posted by spirit, Tue Jan-23-01 09:52 PM
that evil guy who posted as "spirit" a few hours ago?

annnnnnnyway. sarcasm. in. a. text. based. medium. does. not. always. work.

in a forum where people say that everlast is a better emcee than eminem, you never know what opinions people seriously hold or only jokingly pretend to hold for the sake of sarcasm.

but that "some people don't get because they don't get any" comment was a dis, so off the reflex I (sometimes) cuss out people who try to clown. consider it a bad habit i'm trying to get rid of.

as far as sarcasm goes, peep my post under "d'angelo ain't no thom yorke" for a key example of how to flip sarcasm in text. heh.

I just realize I *totally* read what you were saying wrong. You were trying to say that I don't get sarcasm in writing because I don't get any sarcasm in real life, right? At first, when I responded, I thought you were trying to say "don't get any in life" in reference to sex, on some old "he wouldn't understand because he dooesn't get any pussy" so I thought you were straight clowning. So, I switched to dis mode myself in response. Whoops.

Dag, honestly, I hate this Net shit sometimes, because if this was a verbal conversation, that could have been cleared up in five seconds.

I apologize...

And I suppose this is further ammunition for you to say that I misread mad shit...ah, well...

The brutal truth is that the bulk of white people in America never had any interest in educating black people, except as this could serve white purposes. It is not the black child's language that is in question, it is not his language that is despised: It is his experience. A child cannot be taught by anyone who despises him, and a child cannot afford to be fooled. A child cannot be taught by anyone whose demand, essentially, is that the child repudiate his experience, and all that gives him sustenance, and enter a limbo in which he will no longer be black, and in which he knows that he can never become white. contrare mon frier (sic). one of marvin's pet peeve's was that he had to strip naked (and post sexual healing marvin...dude was not in shape) for women every night.

why do you think he was so obsessed with being the black frank sinatra.

and him sneeking curse words past censors was ledgndery marvin.

"give me some head"
"that shit ain't too funny to me"
"do you remember all the bullshit baby?"
"i need some santified pussy"

trust. if marvin influenced d. it's the art of slipping shit from him.

as for your friend--er homegirl, she is one of the few females i heard complain about "d trying to be sexy".

nah, seriously, I wasn't trying to start...sometimes you say things in a cryptic way (a la when speaking about D's possible future collabs). So, I wasn't sure if you were saying "D wasn't influenced by Marvin, but if he was..." or if you were saying "The main thing D took away from Marvin was...".

The reason why I asked was because I wasn't sure. Maybe I should have e-mailed that question.

(honestly, I do NOT ask rhetorical questions....if I ask, I don't know the answer)

let me also add, that some people who you think are obvious influences for musicians are NOT....

I interviewed Kina and she said that Tina Turner was not one of her influences...considering she is a black woman making rock-based music, I find that incredibly hard to believe (esp. with the vocal similiraties b/t Kina and Tina at times), but that's what she said.

I seem to recall Erykah saying that Billie Holiday is NOT one of her vocal influences, which I also find difficult to believe considering that Erykah appears to have a jazz-influenced singing style, but hey...(you probably know more about that than I do...and my recollection may be incorrect)

I thought D might have been a similar case, i.e. not influenced by (or not admitting influence by) Marvin. You answer "no", so that clears it up.

Wish I'd had this quote a month ago when you were like "F*** the Rolling Stones! F*** Barbershop! F*** Klezmer! Long Live Chuck Berry!" (with his appalachian country ass music) :-)

...not that I want to get started again...(although I am antsy for a real discussion...c'mon, "d'angelo ain't no"---> what the hell is that?)...let's get something to work with.

"sanctified pussy" (later released with the sanitized title "sanctified lady")
"them niggers is savage in the sack" (released as "savage in the sack")
"this will make you laugh" (the version on the Vulnerable album. listen very closely at the end... he sings "this will make you laugh/but it's not funny to me... this shit ain't funny to me")

um... there's some more. i have to think for a minute about it.

and while we're at it, i'd like to reiterate what ?uest said: all marvin's albums were not good. and the first couple of ones don't even count, cos it was strictly Motown assembly line product and marvin didn't even like any of those albums. and yes, marvin used to strip down to his underwear as late as 1983... it was not pretty.

by the way, this whole post is ridiculous.

if u knew the history of motown, philly international, etc., you would know that it was common practice for each and every artist to churn out 2-3 albums within a 1-1/2 year expanse. No regard was really given to the artistic "imaging" of the artist.(songwriting ability), simply because you had artists on the same label doing covers of the same songs and you had the same song writers sitting in a conference room writing at least 10 songs a day. sure d is no marvin, but d has always written his own stuff, by himself for the most part (i'm going to get the marvin discography and post it in a minute)

over the years the music industry has changed, drastically. more time is put in between the release of albums, (which i believe to be a good thing). if d put out an album every year ya'll mofo's wouldn't buy that shit anyway (see prince). so quit yer crying. and why does d have to "be" marvin in the first gotdamn place?

get a grip. he didn't write all the early stuff. if d had 20 people writing for him he could put out a cd every week,...but i reiterate u mofo's wouldn't buy it.

for the history lesson and your voice of reason... you are absolutely right, ANYBODY who got past the door could churn out multiple LPs back in the day with Motown, given the writing and production teams they had, and quantity does not necessarily equal quality... don't get me wrong, i love Marvin, grew up on his music, paid my respect at his viewing, was groovin' to What's Goin On just yesterday while sitting in Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles... Marvin was special and so is D'Angelo, NO NEED FOR COMPARISON... stop the madness

no d anit no marvin. just like musicqsoulchild anit no d and jayz anit no common and vince anit no mj and shaq anit no wilt and mcgrady anit no doc and so forth and so on. BUT WHO CARES!!!!!why do we have to get into so many comparisons??? i like them both. do i like every cut marvin ever put out ?? no i dont.but i appreciate how good he was.maybe d needs to do some more work and display the staying power that marvin had over the years and hopefully in march when that live joint comes out that will be another solid effort like "brown sugar" "live at the jazz club" and "voodoo". we need to get off that "who's better" kick and just be glad that we have some good music out there to listen too. at one time all we had for r& b was brian mcknight. r/kelly,jodeci, guy, tlc, blackstreet, keith sweat, usher and a lot of other garbage. at least with d and maxwell, balil, badu, eric benet, jilland a few others at least there are some folks out there with some talent.

by the way has anybody heard a release date for maxwell??

soulquarian for life.

not even close.....i think u got to be on some serious shit to compare marvin to anybody past or present....oh yeah..dont forget the vulnerable lp he dropped....that shit is what im pumpn on the way to work dese dayz...keep it moovn!
20235, This post is pointless

D' aint no marvin and u ain't no me...

WOW! we're all different people!

Marvin was an amazing writter, singer, etc.
D', however probably plays keys better than marvin though...
But ur missing the point, so what if he is influenced by him or compared 2 him. D' does what he does (see quests post) if I want marvin, I'll listen 2 marvin.

As 4 ur comment on D' only releasing 2 album and marvin's endless stream of music... U obviously have no idea how the industry works 2day. Did u miss prince's dispute w/ warner about wanting 2 release 2 much music (oh, but I suppose Prince is no marvin either). The recod companies won't let u do that now. so D' took his time... shall we dip in2 the vault...
70 hours of material... Thats 70 albums.

U don't understand, do u? This post is pointless.

those people obviously aren't Marvin Gaye fans, cos he wasn't even Marvin Gaye on those albums, was he? he was a lump of clay Motown was trying to shape into some sort of lounge singer for the new generation.
