19923, Angie Nissel in Jan.'s PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY!!!!
Posted by guest, Wed Jan-31-01 07:06 AM
Congratulations to Angela Nissel...Her up and coming book, Broke Diaries was given an excellent review in Publisher's Weekly! The best is yet to come!!!

Publishers Weekly
January 22, 2001
Page 309 (Non-fiction Forecast Section)

The Broke Diaries:
The Completely True and Hilarious Misadventures of a Good Girl Gone Broke.
Angela Nissel
(April)

The Internet has been around long enough as a venue for works like the diary
presented here, which debuted online, for such works to have lost some of
their mystique. Still, Nissel deserves her moment in the sun. As a struggling
college student at the University of Pennsylvania, she decided that to keep
her mind off of her empty stomach, she would keep a journal of her days and
post it on the Net.
The result is a series of biting, funny entries about the evil atmosphere of
check-cashing offices, the horror of being two cents short for the grocery
bill and the joys of making friends who buy dinner.

Her wry thoughts about being flat broke will appeal to readers who enjoyed
Bridget Jones's exploits and similarly sparky works. Nissel is no fictional
Bridget, however, obsessing about weight and cigarettes. She's a city girl
who knows the exact price of Ramen Noodles and the pain of counting pennies.
Although she occasionally recycles material, she rants with aplomb, using
colorful anecdotes (her elderly landlord comes for the rent and ends up
falling asleep on the couch) to pull the reader further into her impoverished
reality. She doesn't delve into the actual fear and pain associated with
poverty, but views her time of hunger with amusement, like a financial
misadventure that she always knew would end. Charming and sharp, Nissel's
diary will be relished by anyone who's ever been a student and remembers
those ramen noodles.

Forecast: With a blurb from Chris Rock, a five-city author tour, stickering
campaigns in several key cities and a low cover price, this paperback
original is poised for success.

I'm all amped, 'cause Pub Weekly is like the INDUSTRY mag for literary ish.

and I just received more good news about my book after I read this review.

And damn, I am so blessed.

And I hope everyone reading this devotes some time to something they *love* and something they believe in. Not tomorrow, dammit. Now.

I am so overjoyed to see that people *get* what I wrote. All I wanna do is see people laugh, and I'm willing to put my own foibles out there to make it happen.

All my sarcasm has been drained. I look like a newly-crowned Miss America on ecstacy, I am smiling like a clown right now.

Love!

"stupidity runs" The Goose

People hold on to religion, like a crutch because they can't make it any other way. With religion you stop being responsible for your own actions and blame someone else like God when it's something you like and the Devil when it's something you don't like.

I see Beatles type stuff, I see movies, I see dropping acid, I see some freaky concept book with a weird title like Freddy Stardust's Southpaw Chicken Fetish that totally revolutionizes the way books are written, I see smashed up hotel rooms and tumultous love affairs and then, like, 40 years from now, there's going to be a huge museum in Philly commemorating the fact that the one and only Angela Nissel grew up here.

Yeah, I'm on her tip, but it's cuz I'm proud.
