19617, UGK disses Common Posted by Austin, Sat Feb-10-01 07:14 PM
I heard some rumors about an alleged track dissing Common. I was skeptical. Well, a friend on Instant Messenger hit me with the track. And they didn't call out names, but it was obvious who they were talking about. I was disgusted. Reason being, they were supposedly upset about something Com said at a show in TX in like 96 where UGK opened up for him. Now, why wait until Com has a bigger name? Possibly to make a bigger name for yourself?? Man, that's wack.
The track is by Middle Fingaz featuring Bun B and it's called 'No Smiles' or 'Ain't No Games' or something if you want to download it (because I sure as hell wouldn't buy some garbage like this).
Any thoughts on this? I hate to be one to incite stuff like this but I just wanted some thoughts from the okaypeeps on this.
And I don't even know if this track is old news or what so if I'm late or something, please don't be too hard on me:-) ________________________________________ Peace to each and every one of you bitch ass suckers.

Your signature is VERY thought provoking! 19620, for my Jazz Age class... Posted by broke, Mon Feb-12-01 02:15 PM
I gotta read this book called Jazz Revolution by Kathy J. Ogren.
It pretty much explained the history of Jazz and the times during its rise...i was thinking throughout the period of reading it that if I were to replace the word Jazz, with "hip-hop" i would have been reading the EXACT same book.

You should also, if you havent seen it already, buy the Ken Burns' "Jazz" documentary. It's a 10 episode project, with the assistance of Wynton Marsalis, outlining jass from the civil war to present. Though he gave Miles and Coltrane less the attention they deserved, the entire piece is a must see. I rushed home every night and made sure the channel was on PBS an hour before the show just so I wouldn't miss it. Very empowering and educational. If you want to learn more, go to www.pbs.org/jazz. The site even has an interactive program so you can make your own jass compilation.

And they >didn't call out names, but >it was obvious who they >were talking about.
oh really?
1st verse
"Aint no sense for common to flex/but now he know aint no comin back to tx"
2nd verse
"Aint no thang, aint no games bein played/common sense sound like a bitch that likes to sip lemonade"
"I got niggas on all sides that come from the south/so common fuck what you talkin about, cause nigga aint no games" (notice a trend here?)
4th cat comes in
"aint no love, no smiles, we aint no fuckin lames/I seen this kufi wearin bitch that put salt in his game/you used to love her/till cube fucked her and she moved down south/now we constantly got our dick in her mouth
the cat from ugk didnt rhyme about com, it was these other cats called middle fingaz
its one of the worst songs Ive heard in my soon to be 3 years down south, and trust me Ive heard some horrible stuff. Like that "we got our dick in her mouth" line, did they not hear the great ending that the song was about hip-hop? Or do they just wanna brag THAT much
song is trash
com need not even bother making a comeback record
this is like if immature woulda made a comeback record to "mcs be insecure/like them lil' ho niggas immature wearin bobs"

I just paid attention to Bun B's verse because I absolutely couldn't stand the other folks on the song. But I do remember those lines now that you bring them up.
But I agree with you. This isn't even worth acknowledgment from Com. In my eyes, they played themselves by making such a piece of trash record in the first place.
If Com is reading this, from a long time fan, ignore this piece of trash. It's obvious they're just trying to get some recognition off somebody with a bigger name. ________________________________________ Peace to each and every one of you bitch ass suckers.

I honestly hope Com and ya'll ignore this.
Who cares what 'they' say? Com's a bitch for not responding. I can see it now. Honestly, who gives a fuck besides them? I know I'd have even MORE respect for Com than I do now if he just let it pass.

Reason being, they were >supposedly upset about something Com >said at a show in >TX in like 96 where >UGK opened up for him.
I seriously doubt Common (in 96 mind you) would be HEADLINING a show in Texas with UGK as openers. What I heard was that Com called Texas folk ignorant for sipping syrup. Well, if that's the case, Com deserves every verbal lashing he gets. All biases aside, if you think Bun B ain't got it in him to rip damn near any MC...
>Now, why wait until Com >has a bigger name? Possibly >to make a bigger name >for yourself?? Man, that's wack.
Sure, UGK has to use Common to make a name for themselves. Really now.
You still cool peoples, Austin. BTW, I copped that "entroducing" on the strength of you. Good looking out.

>What >I heard was that Com >called Texas folk ignorant for >sipping syrup. Well, if >that's the case, Com deserves >every verbal lashing he gets.
?!??!???!?!
Sipping on syrup IS ignorant. Are you defending that practice? Sipping syrup is unhealthy and there is some evidence that it might have led to Screw's death. Sipping on syrup is a practice that SHOULD be condemned (NOTE: Only a minority of folks in the HUGE state of TX sip syrup, but for those who do, that shit is stupid, I'm here to tell you, just like any other misuse of a drug is stupid...cough syrup is designed to suppress coughing, not to get high...isn't that common sense? (pun intended))

No, I'm not. But if Com (allegedly) called EVERYBODY from Texas stupid for sipping syrup, he deserves to get got.

i never heard anything about the com/ugk thing...however, being that i am from texas (in philly now) and common is my favorite emcee...i'd be more than disappointed to hear him say EVERYONE from texas is ignorant. i know i'm not and i dont mess with cough syrup, weed, or get drunk (which com has done 2 of the 3)...i think it's all ignorant, but to each is their own.

here we have a case of people's mouths running away with them. No one said Common called EVERYONE from Texas ignorant, it was alledged and I believe that he was simply misquoted. I've heard the "wack MC's be sippin on syrup" line, but never has it progressed to everyone in Texas.

Cuz, one of Com's best friends is Erykah, straight outta Dallas. Do you REALLY think he would call everyone out of Texas ignorant? Don't you think knowing Erykah alone shows him the wide variety of folks in TX? As I understand it, Com's words were "wack emcees, sipping on syrup" or something like that, which is basically a dis to UGKz and 3-6 NOT to Texas as a whole. They responded. Now maybe Com will respond back...we'll see. But I don't think Com would dis a whole state that one of his best friends is from.
>Thinking about it, I don't know. > Com might surprise me, >but on the here and >now, I'm going with Texas' >finest.
What battle rap has Bun written that compares to "The Bitch in Yoo"? Bun has ill lyrics, but I haven't heard him spit ill BATTLE lyrics. writing dope battle rhymes is a very specific skill that is different from writing dope verses in general.

19656, His verse on this track was average Posted by Austin, Mon Feb-12-01 08:14 AM
...at best.
They messed up by making this record if Com does decide to retaliate. It was a sloppy record and Com could disect them and break them down in under three minutes.
And I'm talking Just Com here. Bun B pulled a bitch move by letting his whole crew get on a track and dis Com when it's just him that has beef. What would happen if Com got in the studio with his whole crew?
UGK would get ripped, not only by Com, but (potentially) by Black Thought, Mos Def, and Talib.
Again, if Com does respond, they'll realize that this was a mistake on their part. ________________________________________ Peace to each and every one of you bitch ass suckers.

19658, Bun Vs Com Posted by Binlahab, Mon Feb-12-01 11:38 AM
I'll try to explain it in the littlle time I ahve but here is the jist:
Bun is 'realer' than Common.
Com is immensely talented, I'm not questioning that. but the bottom line is that, lyrically, Bun can hang w/ some of the best emcees out there (not on Mos level, maybe Del's...)
should the avergae listener compare, oh....'Pocket Fulla Stones' to 'Ghetto Heaven' I think they would come away, believing that Bun speaks more to their everyday existence.
not to mention, Bun seems like he has more heart. I dont think Com would knock a motherfucker out, or forbid someone from performing in their hometown, but....you'd ahve to think twice before fucking w/ Bun on that level...
I'll go find some lyrics, and we can compare and contrast all day.

> or forbid >someone from performing in their >hometown, but....you'd ahve to think >twice before fucking w/ Bun >on that level...
Bun is Port Arthur TX. I'm sure he has a lot of people in H-Town. But could he really "forbid" COm from performing in H-Town.
(because, in all honesty, stopping someone from performing in Port Arthur wouldn't hurt their touring schedule very much)
>I'll go find some lyrics, and >we can compare and contrast >all day.
If you're looking for lyrics, find battle-related lyrics, because that's all that's gonna matter in a battle.
Based on "The Bitch in Yoo" alone, I think very few cats are seeing Com when it comes to writing battle songs.

Dude, I'm from the South. I respect UGKz. I think Bun B is dope. But it ain't about who's dope, it's about who writes more battle verses. And of all the UGKz material I have heard, I can't recall Bun spitting anything I would call an 'ill battle rhyme'. Even on the song at issue, Bun is spitting ill lines, but his battle lines...shrug. This is coming from a native Southerner who has been battling on stages and street corners since 93. I have heard Com's battle material and it is pretty good. I haven't heard any battle rhymes from Bun. No one on here is able to quote any battle rhymes from Bun, including his fans on here. So...I would have to vote for Com based on what I *do* know.
Personally, I think Saafir would rip both of them, based on the Hiero/Hobo battle. Ha...

19663, Ignorance begone! Posted by Warlock, Wed Feb-14-01 08:39 AM
First of all, since when is someone's skill on the mic determined by their aptitude for violence? Even more so, if you're so much "realer" why start a battle with a subpar verse that in all probability will result in a loss for you? If you're that "real" why not just swing on the offender and be done with it? Second, if you really ARE (big ol' if - bordering insuated prevarication) a better MC, then why is it even an issue to band someone from performing? If you're that much better, prove it and let the audience decide. Lastly, what are you Bun B's A/R manager? Did you sit down with him in a coffee shop and watch him knock someone out? Who are you to determine or even judge an MC's realness? I'm a common fan and I'm not disputing your claim that Bun B is a better MC (matter of opinion), but I don't believe he is. What I am CRUSHING is your reasoning. Realness? You hypothesize victory for Bun B based soley on an arbitrary concept as listener measured "realness?" Real, is the @$$-whoopin that Common put on cube. Common's track record speaks for itself.

19664, ignorance, come back! Posted by Binlahab, Thu Feb-15-01 03:59 AM
'realness' as a qualifying measure of an urban artists talent IS perceivable. I'll try to break this down for you, with out sounding too ignorant.
Both of these two artists make music for other people, they dont just sit in the bedrooms and record only for their own pleasure, correct? Com has changed and gone to another level in his sound, attracting a different type of listener. Bun B has not. He doesn't rely much on metaphors or wordplay, he's much more straight forward then Com is or was. The beauty of a Com verse was that you had to listen to it, a few times, to catch everything the cat was trying to get across...Bun is more lowest common denominator, there is no second level or varying degrees of depth to his lyrics, he says whatever and thats exactly what he means. Ppl can relate easier to Bun than they can to Com. The typical hip hop listener, on hearing tracks from either of these two, would be more inclined to remember one of Buns lines, than one of Com's simply because they didn't have to figure it out.

can someone, ANYONE, post battle lyrics from Bun B? Stop saying 'ignorance begone' and start providing some information.
And we know damn well what Com will do based on "hungry" and "the bitch in yoo". who gives a fuck who the lyrics were aimed it, the shit was popping...and "I met a ho who said you were her favorite rapper, so i had to slap her" ain't super-complex...Com doesn't spit these incomprehensible verses in his battle rhymes...besides, a lot of it is emphasis and attitude (that's why when you see battles, the lines that get the most applause aren't necessarily the tightest...it's mostly about how you spit it).
Can *anyone* throw up Bun's tightest battle lyrics? Otherwise, this is all speculation...

19679, Honestly.... Posted by Phil, Fri Feb-16-01 04:11 AM
I've never heard Twista's stuff, but that verse was pretty good. If I use that verse as a template, all it seems like to me is that he's looking to put as many words as posible in a line that rhyme. Kinda like he takes a word, takes all of the words that rhyme with it, and then sit down and create a line.
On the other hand, I appreciate Com's verse because it's more complicated for want of a better word.....I don't know...like you said, different strokes for different folks.
Peace, Phil

no doubt.
I appreciate the cat, every time I listen to his lyrics, I have to rewind in order to fully get @ where his mentals are, and thats good shit.
HOWEVER, in a straight battle. Put Coms sample verse, against Twistas, and throw them in front of a crowd.
Twist wins. Period.
P, try to say Twists verse. I mean say it out loud. To say that many words, and have them all make sense, and to never run out of breath, and to get involved w/ the music (u said u had never heard Twist, I recommend it HIGHLY) like he does....Com is nice, no doubt about it. For sheer imagery, he's got it.
but in a battle....I dont think so man...my opinion.

>HOWEVER, in a straight battle. Put >Coms sample verse, against Twistas, >and throw them in front >of a crowd.
I think that goes back to what you said about what people want to hear...the "realness" aspect of it. I think that people are more into Twista's subject matter than Com's and they'e eat that up, but I wouldn't put it past Com to come nasty too, I think he's versatile enough to do that.
>P, try to say Twists verse. >I mean say it out >loud. To say that many >words, and have them all >make sense, and to never >run out of breath, and >to get involved w/ the >music
I thought of that when I was reading it, I'm sure it is hard to do.

19683, twista is dope but... Posted by spirit, Fri Feb-16-01 11:16 PM
...have you ever seen a battle? that shit you quoted isn't really registering in a battle. punchlines like "I'm burying heads like ostriches" ain't winning it. Unlike all this speculative shit, I have heard Com on tape battling cats face to face (Wake Up Show versus Wu Affiliates) and on studio-finished battle rhymes ("the bitch in yoo"). we're not talking about who is the nicest poet, we're looking for the illest with battle rhymes. You can be a dope rhyme writer, but might not necessarily have the illest battle rhymes.
Example: I don't think that Canibus is anywhere near the best songwriter in hip-hop, but he most certainly writes some of the illest battle verses.
Battling is about ripping your opponent, not speaking on random shit, no matter how ill the randomness sounds. It all comes down to who comes up with the coldest insults...with the wicked flows (twista's flow is super-sick though, let me say that).

somebody brought up the point that it wasn't just one person dissing Com on the track, but a whole damn crew. now, i have all faith that Com could rip them boys a new one all by himself, but just imagine if he called in his friends like Thought, Mos, Talib, Pharoahe, etc. It would be like the all-star team. Now that is something that i would love to hear!!

19693, I'm gonna put it like this Posted by AlanDuval, Mon Feb-12-01 11:21 AM
UGK...I grew up on those boys...Ever since I was a "youn-gun". I gotta represent them boys, cause they represent me. Southern Playas worldwide.
Common...I've admired that boy from afar for awhile, remember him from when he was "Common Sense." Always thought he was a dope lyricist. I bought LWFC and absolutely went wild!
I say all that to say this, I think both are very good lyricists for their niches. You start mixing those niches up, it's straight up nasty. It's not meant to happen. But if it came down to it, I gotta side with UGK. Although they might not have the lyrical prowess of a Common, they still my diggas forever...So if it has to get down to it, I'd be rooting for UGK, knowing they couldn't touch Common lyrically...

Bun could not approach Com's lyricism. If 'real' refers to Bun's capacity to kick every day average insults like "I'll kill you if I come to your town" and battle in the vein of tupac (fuckyoupussypunketetc) then sure he's 'real'
but if you wanna talk skills....Com will kill...Plus he can take it from the metaphorical to the literal to the double meaning levels
Bun B would be killed.

19697, his flow Posted by kevb, Wed Feb-14-01 05:59 AM
his cadence when he spits that shit. most of the time lyrics aint all that they are hyped up to be, it how the artist spits the words.
the edge bun-b has over common is his flow. while i love com's lyrics, it's like he has a tough time finding a rhythm, he does a good job but it's still obvious. with bun-b his cadence and his voice is what makes him dope. the edge com has over bun-b is the fact that he has deeper insight in his lyrics. but this doesn't make any one better than the other. just different.

19698, NOT THE FIRST TIME THO! Posted by broke, Mon Feb-12-01 02:23 PM
I made a post a long time ago regarding this. But Pimp C dissed the Roots a while back for the "What they do" video on Meen Green's album "Smokin Section"
Obviously the UGK boys don't take a liking to the Soulquarians sound, since it don't "bump in the trunk" opinions are assholes tho, everybody got one.

actually, several gangsta cats had problems with the "what they do" video because they saw it as hating. i seem to remember biggie taking that song the wrong way too (or the right way, depending on our viewpoint). it ain't about the beats, it was more about the message of the song/video.

19700, RE: wrong conclusion... Posted by guest, Wed Feb-14-01 06:29 AM
Unfortunately, I don't think Com is gonna answer because as I remember, he had to sqaush the beef with Cube with the help of Nation of Islam after all the Eastcoast/Westcoast drama (the one b4 Biggie and Tupac - yes it's always been around) And he promised not to go that route anymore. Also understand that this conincided with the change in his direction to the present album. At the time he started the progression to being more spiritual and more mature and honest with his lyrics.
So that's why most folks don't think he can still bring it but he damn sure will if he had to. And Bun B would not stand a chance. Shame that it might not happen - anyway Eminem got enough drama going on for me, thank you.
I don't think the folks who are backing Bun B know Common like some of us do or they trying to forget.

19703, RE: UGK disses Common Posted by guest, Wed Feb-14-01 09:01 AM
Hiphop is kinda stagnant to me roight now. So it's nice to hear some ruckus. Unfortunately the parties involved are not always guaranteed to keep it responsible and not take it to barbaric levels. Heathly competition is always good but let's be careful aight,

19704, Okaypeople, let's open our eyes about this........ Posted by guest, Wed Feb-14-01 09:06 AM
<<<<Reason being, they were supposedly upset about something Com said at a show in TX in like 96 where UGK opened up for him.>>>
Okay, before we clobber UGK and Middle Finger-whatshisname, mayb we should review tha facts. What tha hell did Common say about these niccas that would make em so upset that they would resort to "dissin" him 5 years later??? If Common did say sumthin....he started so there's no need 4 us to bitch and moan about it. I pray he didnt say anything, because who tha fuck disses their opening act? thats rude as hell....if he did that to me, i'd get bac at him too.

19707, Com has weakened his position Posted by TocSIQ, Thu Feb-15-01 09:12 PM
since bitch in yoo... back then Com didn't have that much material out for Cube to dis him about... whereas Cube had several albums, movies, etc. out there in the open
now it's flippes... Com that has changed his image... and truthfully some of the ish he's wearing these days would not be hard to throw into a battle rap
I still think Com can get to levels where other rappers can't in battles... and think he can slay anyone (i also admit don't know ish about bun b, but the name alone is weak)... but i'm just saying he doesn't have the up-and-comers advantage anymore

I saw Common spit that freestyle, dude did it here in Cincinnati, but just as a joke, 'cuz like it was on a roll from the shit that he was doing in his rhyme. lol....I'm trippin' off the fact that ya'll would think that dude would be sayin' "whack emcees be sippin' on some sizzurp" to diss Texas, I know it's a popular practice in Texas and whatnot, but 3-6 Mafia from Memphis made that joint as ya'll know. And fuck whoever dudes name, why be concerned? If it came out on a national level than it'll be different, it's not Cube-Comm status yet.
Peace.

but come on, do you think MC Shan thought "KRS-One" was the name of the guy who was gonna end his career?
I think Com will win, but not cause dude has an old school sounding name.
(if you think about it, most names in hip-hop are wack)
