Beat: 2.5/5 - Beat sounds dated, like it could of been a remix for De la's "Ooohh"
Lyrics: 3/5 - Not really digging the hook
1850, Um, check your eardrums people, this tracks a banger.
Posted by BlacKnightSC, Tue Sep-28-04 08:56 PM
As with pretty much most of the album. Yall cats be expecting all these artists, including Kweli, to be on the same tip and pumping out the same shit...expand your musicial horizons, cause you guys got left behind on their classics and cant move past them.

And I am thinking for myself, so dont call me a rider or any of that bullshit.
1851, co-sign

Definitely a banger, and

>expand your

exactly, I'm not feelin everything Kweli does, but he's pretty damn eclectic and his stuff is definitely some next shit.

"Yo Hi Tek, Back up offa me" even though he wasnt really sayin it to tek, it just sounded like he was dissing and it made me laugh. Listen to the beginning of the song

1858, i LOVE THE BEAT
Posted by loi, Tue Sep-28-04 02:14 PM
It's the beat that lil bow used ( in the background) and I loved the lil bow wow beat then! Remember, lil bow wow, you just don't know....Anyways, I bought the album online(download) so i'm going to guess it's a neptune beat, cause it was a neptune beat when bow wow did it! Am I correct?
1859, RE: i LOVE THE BEAT
Posted by onehaqq01, Tue Sep-28-04 02:44 PM
I don't like the beat, lyrics on point.
1860, he paid $150k for this

throwaway beat? lmao.
1861, RE: he paid $150k for this
Posted by loi, Tue Sep-28-04 02:58 PM
Neptune? Cause the neptunes used this for Lil Bow Wow like two or three years ago.
1862, Well
Posted by guest, Tue Sep-28-04 03:42 PM
some of their tracks can sound very similar (just like any other producer) but I doubt it was the same identical thing.

Was the song released as a single? cuz i think i know what you're talking about. and if that's the one, then it doesn't sound alike.
1863, RE: Well
Posted by loi, Tue Sep-28-04 03:58 PM
IT'S THE lil bow wow, you just don't know.......it's not the exact same, but the back ground bells, exactly! Clearly neptune, if it is!
1864, neptunes use
Posted by guest, Tue Sep-28-04 04:03 PM
same instruments/sounds for a lot of tracks. Some of their songs they use the same synthesizer, bells, whatever. but like i said........its not the identical beat.
1865, RE: neptunes use
Posted by loi, Tue Sep-28-04 04:06 PM
I don't think I ever said it was, point is, I immediately thought lil bow wow, so it's close enough, but anyways I like the song alot! So can you look at where i asked a question about the we know song. Maybe you can answer it! Thanks!
1866, This shit is bangin'!!!!!!!!
Posted by guest, Wed Sep-29-04 05:20 AM
as well. I aint never heard this Neptunes beat no where before.

So far he's been flowin' as well.

1870, RE: We Know
Posted by loi, Tue Sep-28-04 02:10 PM
I have a question which might make you have to go back and really listen to this song. In the beginning,is he talking about a different girl than at the end? He mentions the girl being an impossible love, a horizon that he can never ride into and that they can never be. Now the second part is a different subject matter completely, it's his girlfriend he's talking about and that's obvious, but the first part sounds like a different girl. What do you think?

Oh yeah I liked this song, kinda.
1871, i NEED A QUESTION ANSWERED
Posted by loi, Tue Sep-28-04 02:46 PM
Is he describing two different situations? It makes the difference between if I love it conceptually, or I think it's just ok! If he's describing two different scenario's in his life, then I love it. The girl he can't really go there with, and then the girl that he's with. The concept of feeling like that and putting it in a song is cool cause it deals with real life. If it's all the same chic, BORING!!!!!!!!!!!
1872, I like the...

laid back change of pace after 3 upbeat bangers. This was smart and is a good song. Someone said that he sounded out of place on this. I disagree completely and totally on that nonsense.

i like this song. Mary is dope on here. solid kwe performance.
1883, RE: I Try
Posted by Jbica, Tue Sep-28-04 04:17 PM
Sounds much better on the album than live...mary really has a sweet tone and good delivery..its grown on me..

Kanye could have done more on the track and its remiscent of get by but I like it.

Doesn't do much for me live though might be cause Kweli's backup singer oversings sometime screams (which is common when you're trying to get put on)

1884, get by cause I try
Posted by loi, Tue Sep-28-04 04:22 PM
get by cause I try, to get by cause I try! Tee Hee!!!!!!!!!! That could be the remix verse! I like it, but I don't know if he needed Mary J. on this one. If the video gets madd rotations, then good mood, but I hope he has a video with Natalie Portman, better move! Isn't Mary's career over? I'd say she's over! As long as she's happy, I don't want to hear another song by her. Unfortunately, Mary makes better songs sad! This is one of the better moments for her considering her last shit! I'm so over Mary, that Talib is actually bringing her back to life for me.

Dignon: "What? She said you were a failure? What has she ever accomplished with her life that's so great?"

Anthony: "One morning, over at Elizabeth's beach house, she asked me if I'd rather go water skiing or lay out. And I realized that not only did I not want that question, but I never wanted to answer another water-sports question, or see any of these people for the rest of my life."

Dignon: "How does an asshole like Bob get such a great kitchen?"

Anthony: "These towels are still warm. I guess that's from the dryer."

Dignon: "My name's Jerry, and this is my associate Cornelius."

Dignon: "Bob's gone! He stole his car."

Mexican: "You in the army eh?"
Dignon: "No, I just have short hair."

Anthony: "Dear Grace, I enjoyed your letter. I agree Camp Douglas isn't all it's cracked up to be. It never was."

Dignon: "It's called Hinckley Cold Storage. Here are a few of they key ingredients: dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers- can you see how incredible this is going to be? Hang-gliding! Come on!"

Future Man: "Keep up the mowing, Kemosabe."
Dignon: "It was landscaping, not just mowing."

Mr. Henry: "I hope this doesn't offend you Bob, but, your brother's a cocksucker."

Dignon: "Cons- well if you go in there tomorrow, then it's just another score by Abe Henry."
Mr. Henry: "That's true."

Dignon: "Who tripped the alarm man!
Anthony: "It's the fire alarm!"
Dignon: "Who tripped the fire alarm?"
Anthony: "It's because of all this fuckin smoke!"

"I try"
"black girl pain"
"never been in love"
"beautiful struggle"

These are all decent songs. Not kweli's best or most memorable, but at least fairly listenable.
1950, I try is horrid
Posted by sfMatt, Tue Sep-28-04 08:40 PM
and I think he's hating a bit much on "Never Been in Love" but otherwise I think he's mostly on point.
1951, So far, it's cool, but that's off 1 listen
Posted by earthseed, Tue Sep-28-04 04:22 PM
I still have to *really* listen to it.

I like Kweli, and haven't been disappointed with anything from him at all...

I'm givin him 5 out of 5 seeds!

1957, Bad mixing/Kweli's "EC" for sure!
Posted by JRennolds, Tue Sep-28-04 07:32 PM
Is it just me or is the mixing on this album terrible. Kweli is drowned out by the beats.

I've been a Kweli fan since his guest appearances on MOOD "DOOM" but he sounds the same, track to track. Shit, he is still on the conscious tip.

This album isn't necessarily bad but it sure isn't representative of Kweli's potential.

Kweli can kill the mic; hand the boy some good beats already!

...I apologize for the OKAYPLAYA HATIN'...

it starts off with bad mixin' on "going hard"
1959, i agree
Posted by GROOVEPHI, Wed Sep-29-04 05:19 AM
that shit get real low when his vocals come in...

black girl pain, where's the 3rd verse??? i like it better with the little girls singing the hook.
around my way is tight, but i like the original sample better.
never been in love is tight.
ghetto show is tight, but whats that speech at the end? cant even hear whats being said.
the beautiful struggle is tight.
where is my history??? that shoulda been on there and supreme too (w/ mos def)..
1960, I hope by EC you dont mean Electric circus
Posted by MuZiK Macks, Wed Sep-29-04 04:06 AM
cause yall gotta listen to that shit again, it was CLASSIC. I love me some Electric Circus. Yall need to expand your musical taste if your gonna be hating on a record like that.

thats like hating the white album, and saying your a beatles fan
1961, nah, EC was/is crap

1963, RE: The OFFICIAL BEAUTIFUL STRUGGLE POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by guest, Wed Sep-29-04 04:17 AM
The only tracks I like on the CD are:

"I Try"
"Around My Way"
"Ghetto Show"
"Never Been In Love"
"Beautiful Struggle"

The rest are either weak or just terrible. His beats sound so "jiggy" this album, it makes me sick. He could have gotten Madlib or Premeir to do his beats, hell have kanye do all of them. Instead I get the fucking Neptunes...WTF?

Oh, and it gets better. Why are the best tracks I've heard of the CD not present. Supreme, which had Mos Def on it (my favorite MC and one of two I put above Kweli), is missing. So is Lonely People, and many others. There are only 13 tracks on the CD, I know they had the space. This CD is a huge let down, I'll give him credit for "I Try" and "Ghetto Show" (which has Common, the other MC I put over kweli), they are hot tracks. And even though I didn't list Black Girl Pain, its tight. I'm just sick of songs about black women..period. The rest of the tracks I didn't list are a waste of my time. I don't get, I've been waiting for this CD for ever. Well there is always Oct. 12th, New Danger...go cop it.
1964, My overall opinion...
Posted by guest, Wed Sep-29-04 05:46 AM
is that this is a dope record. I'm glad that he didn't do a traditional "conscious," "J-Dilla," sounding record. It's always dope when artist stretch their boundaries. He did a good job on this shit right here. His lyrics stayed on point. I'm turning that shit up loud in the morning to get started. I was wondering if album with energy still existed.

Good shit Kweli

GO BLACK MAN GO!!!!!!!
1965, All in all, a little disappointing
Posted by buckshot defunct, Wed Sep-29-04 06:30 AM
I'm really hoping it will grow on me, but so far this album isn't doing it for me. Lyrically it seems decent, and it's not that the production is bad(though a lot of these beats I'm just flat out not feeling)...but as a whole, BS seems like less than the sum of its parts. There's just not much here that really excites me. I love Train of Thought and Quality though, so I guess 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
1966, cd art
Posted by budz4zo, Wed Sep-29-04 08:41 AM
can anyone explain the cd art? i know the words are written like they are on the front cover and 1/2 of "the beautiful struggle" is cut off. thats all cool and who cares about the art anyway, but WTF are the scribbles? at the top it looks like one arm hanging out the sleeve of a t-shirt, but the rest looks like someone fucked up with a pen. can anyone explain the scribble??????

1973, on the REAL, the
Posted by neehiii, Wed Sep-29-04 01:51 PM
lyrics are cool.

the beats - i don't need to list, because many have already, but about 40% of them win. the rest are just wet. SERIOUSLY.
-GOOD album overall tho, when looked at by present days' standards.
-NO point in comparing this to his past stuff, it's just that - his PAST
-Speaking in terms of ALBUM QUALITY NOWADAYS - very similar concept/format to what is out today from ALL artists in terms of CONTENT - if you get an album w/30% of its songs on point today, consider it a BARGAIN.
-most of us DO NOT know the reason for the many "good" songs left off, EXCEPT, maybe TOO MANY folk ALREADY have BOOTLEGGED the songs (not me tho)

bottom line? i'm ok with this. as w/anything, things grow on you, if you listen often enough. fromm 1st listene tho, if i had to do this again, this would have been a purchase i made STRICTLY out of respect for whom he is - which is NOT a reason to buy music.

MOST of these ain't gon even sound ldope onstage(if that was the reason for them put on the album).

Kwe, COME ON, dude.
