18301, MALIK B
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Mar-20-01 06:06 PM
What's the deal with my man Malik B? Is he droppin a solo any time. I love Malik, I give him mad credit because he goes toe to toe with Thought and holds his damn own. I can't think of many emcees who wouldn't be over shadowed by Thought but Malik does his thing all the time. I want to hear more of his lazy ass though. Damnit Malik come to a show or something! I've beenstickin up for you for a while now since mafuckas want to forget about you since you always slackin. Has anyone ever seen him at a show. Any news on his solo?
18302, I never heard about a solo...
Posted by thebigfunk, Tue Mar-20-01 06:42 PM
I never heard anything about a solo effort...
I don't think I could personally make it through a solo Malik album... sometimes he comes off as trying too hard, and it can ruin a track... he isn't horrible, but he's got more bad verses than good...

There was a huge post after I first got here about Malik's talent... that was a good post. I wonder if it was archived...

Somebody mentioned him being on some Beanie track recently...um that's all I've heard. As far as shows!? He might do some local shows here and there but I heard traveling with the group was bad for his health...something like that.

Malik B is bad for Malik B's health. Cat is fucked up for real. As for him doing shows with the Roots, I think I've seen him 3 times: E.Factory in Feb-right before TFA, 9:30 Club a couple of months after that, and lastly The Roots/Gangstarr show at Hammerstein about a year and a half ago-this was the show that prompted Quest to post on these boards that Malik is an asshole and he would never perform with the Roots again. Son was way fucked-up, staggering about the stage, dumping a water bottle over his head and then almost falling in the puddle, Thought having to finish his lines for him. Incidentally, this show was the night before Rahzel's solo dropped and I haven't seen him perform with the Roots since. Now Rahzel I actually miss seeing, he isn't integral to the band but he added some different elements that could enhance a show. Malik brings very little to the table onstage and I imagine he's a huge headache off it. Personally I don't even really consider him a part of the Roots at this point. He's just a cat that occasionally rhymes on a track with them. I'm more used to seeing Malik as that fucked-up dude all over the bars and clubs of Philly and those that really know him know he's got issues. peace.

Who doesn't have issues??? I do know him personally, and yeah he does, just like anyone. But you seem to have a grudge or something! What's your real beef? I rarely post, but your effed up 'tude need some kind of response.

I don't have any grudge or ax to grind with Malik B. If it came out that way, sorry. The bottom line is he has an oppurtunity to be a part of something great and he shits on it. I get tired of hearing people talk about how he doesn't get enough credit, how "the show was great last night but I wish Malik was there", etc. Malik is never there, his participation with The Roots is marginal, and I don't really care if he continues to record with them or not. That's all I'm really trying to say, I may have gotten a bit too personal on my last post and I apologize. There's no need to take it there on a website, if I ever met you in person perhaps we could discuss it for real. My only point was that The Roots will continue to be great with or without Malik B., people tend to overstate his importance.

It wasn't so bad on DYWM or Halflife but on
TFA he starts to sound outclassed, like his
heart really isn't in it any more. I get the
feeling he'll end up being the Jarobi to BT's
Q-Tip; always mentioned as a part of the group
but never around any more and never performing.
His dislike for the road is already well-known.

There's nothing wrong with that track lyrically, or even
in fact musically. In fact it hasn't nothing to do with
what he's speaking about or who he's speaking to - it has
everything to do with the fact he rhymes like he could
care less anymore; whereas Thought always attacks the mic.
I do like the track. I just don't think it's as good
as Malik used to be.

I wanna get Malik on Mt. Arafat next Hajj season, insha'allah
or at least dua for him

not to slight you ?uest, cuz you are the coolest and most generous person this side of I 95, but i remember the first time i ever met you at the Bowery. I gave you a letter to give to Abdul-Malik.

Although the Islam and the Street is connected in some twisted way, Malik appeals to my inner most being with a line or two. The life of this world is a trial, and he spits that.

I got mad love for my man

When he gave salawat to the prophet muhammad (saws) on bahamadia first jawn and i cried.

Before I start this post I just want to say "Whattup Quest?"
A lot of people +try+ to get you to respond and never do,
so I'm just glad for a quick opportunity to rap about Malik.

>i have differences.
>but i must agreee.

I know you like to be obscure and a little contradictory
(great artists usually are) but I'm not sure what the
"differences" are because you "agree" in the next line
with AbdulJaleel.

>malik ain't ever get no hungrier
>than "the spark" and "100%dundee"
>et al.

I actually thought he came off nice on "100% Dundee."
That's probably my favorite Malik rap on the album.
I think somehow my point got lost though; and that this
got taken down a "non-islamic heads can't relate" thread.
(BTW Abdul I visisted your ImamJamil site, it's very
informative. I should have known the media misled me.)

>everyshit he said was true.

I don't see the truth of "The Spark" being disputed.
I don't kneel and pray to the East, nor do I recognize
any organized form of religion (personal reasons) but
I don't disrespect any artist's personal religious
beliefs or find fault with bringing them into music.
I think if Malik had rapped "The Spark" on DYWM?!!??!
with the exact same words I'd jock it more just because
the delivery was more energetic. What I listen to when
I play that song in the ride is the production - the
very subtle "oooooooh, oooooooh" harmonies in the
backdrop that just make the whole shit lovely. Roots
productions always wow me like that - layers and layers.

>the music might have covered it
>up. but he put his
>own personal hell on them joints.
>"i walk around a little edgy already...."

I see that shit in his bio page on the website too;
and it goes with the "Malik doesn't tour" ish we've
been talking all along. I'm sure for Malik religion
is a stabilizing factor in his life for all the tension
and stress he feels; and like I said just because I
don't pray to the East doesn't mean that I don't respect
the fact that he does or that it gives him solace.

BTW Quest your sig file is entertaining to read but
that ish is like five pages long! And I gather that
you did it originally to make a point too.. but I'm
sure it's been archived so many times now it IS made. :)

Peace, Flash

Word. I suppose that given what we've seen and heard of
Malik both on and off Okayplayer it might just be best said
he has an "artistic temperament" - many creative people do.
As a fan I'm just glad he's still willing to make music.

It shows. Highly crafted and finely tuned like a
baller's Impala. Not many rap groups have such great
emcees and I +still+ want to hear the instrumentals
seperately; but The Roots is one of a select few.

Yeah; how did "Edutainment" get five mics anyway?
Don't get me wrong I love the album but even among
BDP's catalogue it's not a high point - it's probably
the most didactic and preachy of all their shit. "Sex
and Violence" shoulda been five mics and "Edutainment"
somewhere around three and a half.. maybe four.
How the fuck did FOABP get three and a half though?
Somebody was +SMOKING+. Same for "Resurrection."

Peace, Flash

PS: Why does dream always get ripped on UrbanExpose?
I never understood why people wanna hate her so bad.

Lest anybody misunderstand I mean it deserved MORE.

Same goes here. That's score is WAY too low.

Why does he deserve more credit? Granted he's kicked some nice verses, especially on Illadelph, but why does he deserve a bunch of credit for a few nice verses? The guy has had the oppurtunity to be in the best live band going right now, in any genre of music, and he shits on it because he's so fucked up. That doesn't deserve credit to me, that warrants a head examination. Malik is not a true member of the Roots, The Roots have made their living as a live band first and foremost and he is never there. Even when he is he's only there in body, not in spirit. I wonder if he'll even be on the next album at all, he's definitely getting phased out and I personally could care less. The Roots Crew will roll on without him. peace.

Nuwb or "blackness" is supreme balance before the chaos was introduced. It was a state of sound, right reasoning. That darkness was triple darkness, which is what you would call the absence of consciousness, or the state of being awoke. In actuality, the dream state is more real and peaceful than the chaos you meet once you are awake. A form of spiritual darkness responsible for the spark that turned on the light that is the life and intellect of all who breathe and think.
When the light is turned on again, the chaos begins. The differentiation begins. The separation begins. The rights and the wrongs, the goodness and the badness; the supreme balance is broken and the ego begins to verse the "I."

Then how would that explain his absences at almost all Philly shows, New York shows, D.C.shows, etc.? The Roots don't fly to all their shows, in fact, I don't believe they fly to most of them at least on the east coast. peace.

Yo....go read his bio in the artists section.....that way...you see what his deal is...it's right there...like I told ya'll before..
You just won't see him at many shows...that's his deal...
Like the other dude said...We don't know their relationship or their situation....the man's in the group for a reason obviously....cause he's tight like the rest...
NO need to get all worked up over it and say he's shitty and don't deserve to be in the group....that's jus nonsense...
But..for real...check out his bio....

Ayo, let's break this down....Whether or not he does shows or not, if Malik B was not an integral part of the roots...I'm sure they would've David Ruffin'd his ass out of the group a long time ago. Now, it is true that when I pay to see a roots show I would like to see the starting lineup, but if my man is out with injuries, then there's no way we could expect him to perform on the same level as the rest of the team, so they hold it down in his absence. Grant that man some solace. Don't say he's fucked up! Ask WHY is he fucked up! ANd offer your hand the next tiime you see his stankin ass!
