I am so glad Jill did HER thing on VH1, unlike the grammys she showed everyone how she does things. No one was in their seat when she was done, and folks were into it, singing along and what not, you go Jill!!!
17244, Congrats!!!

I'd never seen Jill do her thing until last night. I must say that I was very, very impressed. Did yall hear how she re-worked "Long Walk?" Daaaaaam!!

On the flip side of things, however....

What the hell was up w/ that chick Nelly Furtado?
Her set alone should be boycotted!

Were ya'll watching the same show? Don't get me wrong, I like Jill Scott, and her album was the bomb, but her performance was a little disappointing. In my opinion, the entire DIVAS show was a bit wack. Nobody sounded all that great, and it was nowhere near as good as the previous DIVAS. Jill did okay, but she really didn't sound all that great, not really.
17247, I disagree...
Posted by Brownsugar, Wed Apr-11-01 04:53 AM
I think the entire show was awesome!!!...Especially, Jill Scott, Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige and the jazz performance that was done by Aretha and the Greats...

I think this was actually the best DIVAS show yet.

Ppl should watch the DIVAS blooper show they've been running
and be the judge..especially the disaster that happened
with Ms. Ross, that shit was hilarious.

I thought it was very well orchestrated, everyone sounded
great especially JILL, WOW!!once again ...Nelly F was questionable though.

Peace

I agree with Princeguy....were we all watching the same show? Jill was barely making it thru "Natural Woman" and what is up with her and her volume control? Yelling out "yeaaaah" and holding long, loud notes is not exactly great singing. She was barely keeping up. She did the best she could do for what it was worth...she was half-way decent.

She was however, better than Nelly Furtado and Mary J. Blige sounded a mess.

With the exception of the Jazz & gospel performance and the nice salsa piece with Mark Anthony & Celia Cruz the show was a BUST.
17251, The Gospel was the best part

Aretha & the NJM Choir.

come on...they took it to church.

The best singing in the whole show.
17252, What about the Jazz Thing!!!...

Jill sho'nuff turned the show out. She's definitely a talent for all to see!!! I agree wit' CoolV: Why the eff was Nelly Furtado on the set??? Not to mention the Back Street Boys??? Com'on VH1; how the hell are yall gonna pair the "Queen of Soul" w/pop acts??? I mean, I was able to tolerate Kid Rock due to them both bein' from the D; but on the flip side, SV is also from the D. VH1 tried to get SKY HIGH ratings by pairin' these pop acts who don't even DESERVE to be in the midst of ARETHA, Jill, Celia, etc. Artists such as Angie, Macy, Badu, Musiq and Lucy Pearl could've been easily been included.
My highlights: Jill, Celia Cruz and Paul Anthony, the Jazz and gospel ensemble; not to mention Ms. Franklin herself. Aretha still can hold her own. She's a legend. . .

Why did they bring Stevie out when they were about to roll the credits???? Didn't he produce a bulk of her hits in the 80s???

I was really hoping they would let her sing "Daydreaming" I think she could have did that one more justice.
And Mary J the same with Natural Woman. But I still thought it was hot.

Theres No competiton to Jill, Ive seen her at Eight Street
Lounge In Philly and at Radio City Music hall.
And I would Pay full Price again to see her. Her
Stage Presence is Divine and only complimented by her
versatile range. "No one can touch her the thought of it
would be of distaste"..(Dynamicy).....

Jill was definitely the saving grace on the show. This morning they played her version of "A Long Walk" on the radio this morning.
This show was supposed to be a tribute to Aretha, but why were people singing their own songs? The whole concept behind these VH1 "Diva" shows is so bizarre. What are they trying to do? Just throw a group of mis-matched people together trying to hit every demographic. I love Celia Cruz but where was the Aretha connection. Same with Nelly Furtado. I think she's a pretty good pop artist, far superior to Britney and Christina, but she was all out of context and just wrong for the part. The Backstreet Boys and Kid Rock numbers were crap.
I have always loved Aretha, but her performances seem so contrived and forced latley. Sometime she brings it up, but mostly it seems she's on auto-pilot. And we won't even get into the wardrobe issue, because it is beyond redemption. Let's just say halters and strapless do not accentuate her best qualities.

Point blank: VH1 really need to end the "Diva" fiasco immediately!
Stop abusing that word

Well, the show is called, "Diva's Live"...That give opportunity for variation...

She's the Queen of salsa as Aretha is the Queen of soul.

If you're talking legendary influential black female voices, performers - they are it.

The gospel was the best part of the show...the choir ripped it...felt like down south...
