why did ?uest basically diss the album and then give it a decent 3 I/2 combs?

That may have been his inner Janet Lust talking...we all have it :-) (why you think i'm still buying the album even tho i know its prolly not that good?)

He probably gave it 1 1/2 afro picks for the cover alone. One for the album, and one just to hear Janet say "suck you".

maybe in the 'afropic' definitions..but 3 1/2 is like a big diss....

5 being a classic classic...4 being pretty damn close...and 3 is like ehhh...try again...so 3 1/2 is sayin..you ain't makin' anything close to a classic and it's not even so bad to put it away like a 3 down to a 2...

anyways..that's how i read it
and i ain't buyin' albums lately so ..ahh

funny ass review though...i love the dialogue style reviews, they are quite hilarious

Much love,
Kyle

i would commit suicide if the source gave me a 3 1/2.

like not close enough to be good.

i'd rather get a 1 1/2.

your very sig says the source gave common a 3 1/2.

if people knew math, 3 1/2 would signify a 70% perfect album. 7 bangers, 3 fillers.

eh. eff a rating anyway.

ten songs of equal quality all 7 tenths of the way from absolute artlessness to the most inspirational peice of art there is. Mathematically its the same thing...and I think Common would be mad if you told him he made three songs that are completely void of anything worth listening to even if the rest of the album was banging.

"Observe the ugly mess which most men make of their sex lives-and observe the mess of contradictions which they hold as their moral philosophy. One proceeds from the other. Love is our response to our highest values-and can be nothing else. Let a man corrupt his values and his view of existence, let him profess that love is not self-enjoyment, but self denial, that virtue consists, not of pride, but of pity or pain or weakness or sacrifice, that the noblest love is born, not of admiration, but of charity, not in response to values, but in response to flaws-and he will have cut himself in two. His body will not obey him, it will not respond, it will make him impotent toward the woman he professes to love and draw him to the lowest type of whore he can find. His body will always follow the ultimate logic of his deepest convictions; if he believes that flaws are values, he has damned existence as evil and only the evil will attact him. He has damned himself and he will feel that depravity is all he is worth enjoying. He has equated virtue with pain and he will feel that his body has vicious desires of its own which his mind cannot conquer, that sex is sin, that true love is a pure emotion of spirit. And then he will wonder why lover brings him nothing but boredom, and sex-nothing but shame." -taken from 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand

if you got a 1 1/2, you could blame it on "expermintation" that the mainstream can't understand (you know, the arteeest excuse), but if you got a 3 1/2, that means you tried but you suck.

Brothah you'd give Roger Ebert a run for his money if you ever decided to start reviewing movies as well! I just read through the majority of the rest of reviews besides JDJ's as well. At least you are honest, is all I can say. Plus, you're a smart cookie. But um, what lauryn hill song on Voodoo were you speaking of in your Voodoo review? Plus, was Q-Tip yanked at the last minute off Back and Forth? Because meth & red-men are on that song on the CD, and in your review, you stated that after speaking with Lauryn, Q-Tip was added back in. Please clarify, if you would.

my exhausted self yesterday (past the point of over exhaustion, but still had to take a trip to the record store to get the new source/xxl) listened to a few of the tracks at a listening station. I kept saying "wtf is this futuristic (*&#**# ?" mighta just been the exhaustion. Totally forgot to listen to what krs sounded like (purchased its a big daddy thing used for $6.99)

so uh, a krs review would be cool if possible. not even something long n drawn out, just good, sucks, great, something in that vein. The chatroom discussion of jeru's heroez for hire was funny stuff
17070, And it's poorly sequenced.

The ballads belong at the end. The heart and soul of this album are the Fuck-you-Rene songs. Shoulda put 'em at the top.

I really wanted to post just to say amen to ?uest's comment about "The Body That Loves You". That was and still IS the shit...

Wow...those are my two favorite Janet J songs. It makes me smile when there is somebody out there who appreciates the dopeness of those songs.

As for ?uests review, it was good but he disses Prince's Emancipation which is insane in my opinion.

He also doesn't mention/dis/praise enough of the songs on the album. You can tell he didn't like it but I prefer more specifics.

Other reviewers do it too so it's nothing new. For example, has anyone bought the new Vibe with Missy on the cover? Some fool reviews Destiny's Child's new album and only mentions two songs out of the whole album and one is Survivor. Talk about a waste of a review.

the lil slow trilogy of her midsets were a highlight

control's "let's wait" into "funny how time flies" (add on for good measure) "making love in the rain" from herb alpert's keep your eye on me

1814's "come back to me" "lonely" and "someday is tonight" classic shit.

janet's "where are you now" (even if it is about a missing cat.....ahhh virgin janet where are you now??) "the body that loves you" and...damn what was that last song?

velvet rope....hmmm dunno if i liked that too well either. actualy liked this album a lil better.

i know she lives on the net. and her site is okaylike so i assume she will be alerted of this review. so i'd better re-review this again huh.

Nope. That's the only reason I listen to "Janet" still. It should've been a single.

Silk.

Emancipation is a good result of "Freedom" without doubt. NPS and RU2TJF are in my opinion also.

not bad...but it didn't really say much about the album. The feel, the sound, none of that. Pretty entertaining though, more like reading a journal entry than a music review.

I listened to it last night. Decent. I'd probably give it a @@@ though.

Personally, @@@1/2 is the average rating. That's the 'it's good, I'll play it, I'll listen to it...@@@@ is "WOW. This is the shit!" and @@@@@ is where every music lover must buy this album.

1Love,
BigPerm

LATER FOR YOU.

IN THE DECK:

Soulfly (debut) @@@@
Doves - Lost Souls @@@1/2
Radiohead - Pablo Honey @@@
Rachmaninoff's Piano Concertos (1-4) @@@@@
India.Arie - Accoustic Soul @@@

can someone please tell me when all the great hip-hop albums are going to be released???
17091, I agree

It has sort of a run-on quality to it and nowadays I prefer the shorter ones, but hey, who am I to talk about folks' style?

Personally, I don't get into reviews that use units to measure records' value, like @s, or stars or whatever, but again, that's me. It's still a good review.

The 5 songs that play endlessly on my stereo:

"Basic Math" - Innerzone Orchestra
"Right On For the Darkness" - Curtis Mayfield
"The Root" - D'Angelo
"Kiss Me On My Neck" - Erykah Badu (What is the name of that African instrument at the end of that jawn?)
"Cold Blooded" - Common

Welcome to Okayplayer, my favorite online loft.
