I agree to a degree
you see the roots
can write about anything
even your u or me
i feel that there the key.
they open up this universe
like a patient loves a nurse.
eat a fuckin purse,
kill Fred durst,
if u think my style is wack
take two steps back!!!!

Illadelph halflife is definitly some grimy depresing shit if your in that kinnda mood. Not all the joints are like that tho. I can listen to the whole album at one sitting witch says alot compared to most of the albums put out these days....
Clones and Push up ya lighta are probably some of my favorite roots joints.

p.s. I'm a hack M.C. :D think i'll stick to scratch djing, lol

16343, nothing more creepy than.....
Posted by qoolquest, Thu May-10-01 04:20 PM
-riq's fade on "section"
-jazzie fade on "episodes"
-riq's fade on "push up your lighter"
-malik morphing into riq first chorus on "no alibi"
-malik fading like doughboy from boyz in the hood end of "no great pretender" (peep the backwards reverb effect. scared the shit outta me when bob did it)
-hypnotic. scary
more more more.............

The first time I bought it I was mad that it didn't sound
like DYWM?!!??! but the longer that I owned it the more it
started to creep up on me and demand more and more repeats.
I think I already stated in another "Artist" thread that my
all time favorite instrumental on any 12" is my copy of
"Concerto of the Desperado." I like to just turn all the
lights off, block all the windows, make it completely dark,
then drop the needle on that shit and just lay there in the
blackness listening to it. Man, that's better than any high
or drug or acid trip that I could ever imagine even trying.

Hmmm, well... DYWM will always be one of my favorite albums ever, but I must say I also found renewed appreciation of IHL, which happened... either this week or last week, I guess.

The problem with IHL before was that I had bought it together with DYWM and always when I buy two albums at the same time, one of them (the one that sounds best at first listen(s)) always gets a lot of play, while the other remains in the shade...

Now my opinion is that it is pointless to argue which album is better, because they're so different. If you like the DYWM style better, you will like that album more than IHL and vice versa.

Another way to approach it is from a technical viewpoint. At the time I bought both albums, I was more into rhyming. Now I've been exploring beatcreating quite a lot as well. And from a HipHop point of view, IHL is better on the technical tip, no doubt. DYWM had a band playing, IHL had a band using what they play in a similar way as HipHop uses samples. When I listen to IHL now, I hear subtle things in those beats that just tickle my ear.

However it may be, all I know is that if this summer will be a hot one, I'll be very glad to have DYWM in my collection. If this summer will suck, I'll be bumping a lot more of IHL... which kind of illustrates the point of the original post... Hmmm.

To cut a long story short (cause I'm due for class in five min.) there is no point in doing IHL vs DYWM debates. It's better to find the good points of both records. And as a closing comment I would like to say that it would be a shame if the Roots would totally abandon the DYWM-style, cause that would leave us with very few acts flipping it the way they did on the album.

I don't make sense cause I'm Belgian,

16348, Its a really grey album..
Posted by Steve, Thu May-10-01 06:51 PM
It's got this creepy ass grey rainy day ghost town type feel to it..no alibi is one of my favorite jawns but there is something maaaaad unnerving about listening to it.
Personally I think IHL is the best roots album they ever made, because its got this crazy quality to it, and its alot more ambigious than DYWM or TFA, I dunno I cant explain it..but its my favorite to listen to.

It's challengin'...everybody has this straight "fuck the world" vibe from Black Thought on his "make a man murder" tip, to Ursula on some "bitches in cages," it's ill...the second side threw me off the last times I listened when it went off on a tangent, but that's cool...oh yeah, it's Black Thought's apex as far as recordings go, no doubt.

No Alibi, No Great Pretender, and Clones...

But you might get caught off-gaurd by "Hypnotic" and "Push Up Ya Lighter" if you really let the vibe hit you. The Hypnotic is one of my ALL TIME fav hiphop tracks. No Alibi was my fav joint after I first got the CD and listened thru... but after a couple years wit it.... Hypnotic is that heat!

The song name escaps me, but his verse:

nowadays kids get whacked for nothin less than a pact..."

another dark track that's off the hook is Gravediggaz Diary of a Madman. Or Danja Danja!!!
