15496, "in theory"?!??!?
Posted by spirit, Wed Jul-18-01 03:15 PM
why does Quest refer to the quoted phrase "in theory" every time he refers to Moby in his tour diary. What, did Moby say something like "Hip-hop is only good in theory"? LOL! What on earth does "in theory" refer to?!?! HELP!

I remember someone on the boards saying it was because he wanted Busta & Janet to win (they were nominated for the same grammy as The Roots & Erykah)...don't know how much validity that has tho.

That's a rumor and a half.

Moby's just an offbeat cat.

those two words makes it extreamly hard for me to relish in what little glory that award brings me. and i sometimes feel like "maybe i didn't deserve it".

but more than that, would you really wanna brag to your friends and family and show em a tape of you winning an important award that really says:

"well, although i don't think they deserved it i have to give it to em"

i really had a hard time getting over this. personally i don't think he even rememebers saying it. i just have to be the bigger man and get over it.

that one still makes me cringe.

but then... didn't moby personally hand pick the acts for the area1 tour?
and aren't the roots on that tour?
what gives?
evil moby/good moby?
15508, good question

This is true. I am confused about that. In any case, that is so foul ish for him to make such a personal remake at the grammies. Who is that cat anyway? we all know that dude is a tad off beat, that cat Moby. All and all we continue to learn from others mistakes in life.

but it could've been said in a "no one should win because all music should be appreciated as art" kind of way.

and not to say that winning the grammy wasn't a huge accomplishment because it was and still is. i just think that it's more of an accomplishment for your career rather than an accomplishment attributed to musical talent.

not a rumour. moby was on some awards pre show, and was asked whom he would like to win. his response was the busta/janet song.

i guess moby likes to 'play' around.

You know how at the oscars, they don't say "and the winner is", they say "and the oscar goes to...",

benefit of the doubt would be, moby caught himself saying "winner" and tried to correct it, but didn't articulate it very well, hence "in theory"....like, in theory there is no winner....

highlights: well today i finally got to the bottom of the "in theory" thing (it was eating me up after all spirit) so i asked his assistant (she asked me if i liked mob's show) and i let her know how surprised i was to even be here in the first place (in light of that remark). she instantly knew what i was talking about.

she explained that mob is such a busta fan (can't fault him there) that he told bus he would be on some ride or die shit lose or not he would let the world know that his hero is bus a bus.

i told her that reguarless, you don't rain on no nigga's parade like that.....that shit is forever, and it's taking everything in me to hold back. she explained that it was nothing personal and he "is just like that".

soon enough i understood. he wanted bus to get props (well, not that i'm not deserving of those same props, but bus has been in the game for a minute) and if i were up there and slum was nominated i'd do the same thing.

she said initially he was gonna say "busta" win or not.

i said. we woulda fucked him up for that one.

she was relieved he renigged that idea.

the lowlights: waiting for tiny to get her beyoncismskizm thing done (i'm sure she'll tell you)

the show: no nelly! (boo hoo!!!!) instead we had tom tom club open (yes they did "genius of love") i also watched outkast's show. mixed results. time just called their show "the best live show ever" while yes they do have energy. and hits (although the 20something white crowd mainly responded to stankonihits) i was puzzled at what i saw was wasted potential:

-why have a guitarist and bassist if they are not turned on? (95% of that show came from the turntable, while it appeared they were playing live, all they did was....well? dare i say it? synch?)

-the same for the singers, you couldn't hear a damn thing over the 808. only high hat and bass drum. that's all.

if i was them?

i'd: cue the show from a roland machine with 8 tracks, that way i could control the drums, bass, keys, et al. what they did was put full instrumentals in the instant playback machine which on a loud speaker sounds like shit.

i for one knew all the lyrics, but what if i didn't know em?

i mean they rocked it (moved alot, had dancers, lights, full set, did audience participation every 4 seconds)

...but they need a soundman, and for god's sake get a band. not two musicians and half step! get two synth programmers, get a drum machine programmer. get 2 guitarists, and a bassist. get horns for "sportyodie..." i mean for god's sake if mofo's are going to bestow the "best live show ever" title from my grasp. at least turn up the damn guitarist!

moby won cause he had an amazing as fuck light show. i now will make lights just as much a concern as the sound.

hell who knows? maybe i'll buy some costumes as well and really win....

LOL!!!!!

The image of Black Thought and Quest doing a "hit him high, hit him low" combo on Moby is one of the funniest things I've imagined all week.

>she was relieved he renigged that
>idea.

re-nigged. hee-hee. Freudian misspelling.

>the lowlights: waiting for tiny to

??!!?!

Tiny = bootilicious? Inquiring minds want to know. LOL!!!!!

questoroni, don't worry about who Time says is the "best live act ever", their musical critiquing skills aren't exactly considered legendary. on a flip note though, wasn't it time that recently called the roots the best hip-hop act ever? or was that another magazine/web site? whoever it was, chuck d wrote the article.

>i for one knew all the
>>hell who knows? maybe i'll buy

whoa. that's...hmmm. well, that would be the essence of hip-hop, right? all the way back to bambataa...shrug. go for it!
