I can nod in agreement with BKyle that I shared a portion of those same interpretations. I even thought of another explanation of what Com may have meant.
When I thought of it...he also spoke of how many cultures the art connected, and I instantly thought of how life is a constant and therefore an everlasting cipher or cycle that is incessant. With that in mind, hip hop is not only a voice but the ears of the world. Being the ears of the earth allows it to not only speak of things, but to listen and invoke experiences as well. I guess I thought of the fact that artists are now invoking the past and using it to manifest the present and the future if that makes any sense. Especially for artists using the past statements, songs, concepts and works of other artists whether unheard of or dead and redeveloping them into newer contexts. I know Kweli happens to do this alot and it helps people embrace an older sense of things with a newer found awareness. There are alot of people who have gone back to read texts that were written over hundreds of years ago, gone back and viewed movies lost in time and traveled back in some sort of spiritual time warp in appreciation of Steven Biko, Harriet Tubman, Zora Neale Hurston and even artists lesser known like a Shuggie Otis...

But anyways...its all a matter of perception...
