1532, Fair But So Uncool Dangelo feat Questlove
Posted by guest, Sun Sep-26-04 08:50 AM
The intro is tight.
Soounds like that Sanford and Son funk.

What's the deal on this song?
Is it just a Jam session?
What year was it recorded?
1533, recorded during-
Posted by betelgeuse, Sun Sep-26-04 10:32 AM
those "voodoo" recording sessions.

the sessions that also brought us "everybody loves the sunshine".

in fact, "fair but so cool" and "everybody loves the sunshine"
were first released together on a cd used as invitation to
d'angelo's "brown sugar" platinum party--

that's before "everybody loves the sunshine" was released as a
b-side to "untitled (how does it feel)".

right after "the hypnotic" sessions.

i guess you can call these joints the first day of "voodoo"

everybody loves the sunshine.
"bring it back" (he does a bit of it at the end of sunshine and we did it in the "turnaround" part of the live devil's pie.
fair but so uncool

searching
sissy strut
that's the way i feel about ya
bitch

all those joints were the same quality of the "sunshine" sessions. classic shits.

i'd even pay top dollar to hear just one or two
of those jawns--

think about it quest?

can't you two arrange a download without getting into some legal
bullshit with the label? doesn't d own the masters and doesn't
he have the say about what happens with his music?

arrange something, i beg of you.

1544, quest, tell me this about the session:
Posted by betelgeuse, Sat Oct-02-04 12:05 AM
how long did it take? judging by the tracklist, half an hour or so?

was it just you and d? were there others around?

d on wurlitzer and rhodes? organ perhaps? anything else?

tell me about the songs:

how did you guys execute "if i was your girlfriend"? did you try
to recreate that linn drum thing? did d pitch his voice? lol.

who originated that "bring it back" thing you talk about?

could you fill me in on "bitch"? had d already written this or
did you two write it together? or did the idea for "bitch"
spring from this session?

thanks in advance, and add whatever comments you'd like to share
about this session. peace.

Posted by apache3000, Sun Sep-26-04 12:47 PM
\????

...and to top it off, a version of Sissy Strut from the Meters!!!????

I can only imagine with Q on drums and D on keys how this jam woulda went. How long where these sessions? Is the Womack song, ( one of my faves) faithful to the original track, mellow slow and who's on guitar?

The world may never know...

Now I'm mad...where do I get this...besides the expensive LATJC I got as a gift ( no self respecting collector should be without this live album just for the "Can't Hide Love" on it ) ,

this sessions would be even more worth it to me...

1550, its a dope choice, but I can't hear it
Posted by el_rey, Tue Sep-28-04 03:28 AM
Sissy Strut is NOTHING without the sloppiest drumming you can muster, and I ain't heard no such thing from Quest. His shit is too polished and claculated.

1561, stifle this right now...
Posted by Voodoochilde, Mon Sep-27-04 01:21 PM
seriously man. I don't need to hear any details about what i'm not EVER gonna get to hear.

The legendary 'Voodoo sessions'...we know they're out there locked up somewhere...and we KNOW that shit is probably amazing as all get out (if the ONE track that managed to escape out that I did get to hear is any indication: "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" is just effin beautiful)....

but seriously ya'll, don't ask no more about this, cuz then ?uest'll be spillin more details and I'll be on some lifelong mission to figure out SOME way to hear this stuff before i die (These Voodoo Sessions would be on my 'listening mission list' right next to one of the first projects Meshell did where she did all Jimi Hendrix covers)...

The Voodoo sessions and the Meshell/Hendrix project for me are the musical holy grail...there's nothing else out there that I'd love to hear more. There's probably nothing by anyone (dead or alive) that i'd want to hear more... and i know that's sayin a hell of a lot...

I keep hoping that oneday somehow record companies will realize that those so called leftovers/outakes are just as desireable to many of us as the official realeases...imperfections and all. They could release these things cheaply in plain manilla sleeves for all i care...

I'd love to hear the PROCESS the EVOLUTION of what was going on behind the scenes as they created the final finished albums, as they developed a vibe together. man that's where a lot of the magic is for me...the evolution of creating...the practicing, the improvs and grooving, the covers...the artists are usually a little more relaxed and uninhibited...i love to hear that shit...

who knows, mabe one day there will be a Voodoo Sessions DVD/CD (did ya'll film any of that?)

Hell i love the little snippets they have in the Voodoo promo where i think ya'll are in the studio letting Clapton hear it for the first time and it's blowing his mind...

the Voodoo creation deserves to have been documented...and of course available for us junkies to purchase...

but if that's never gonna happen, well, i don't wanna hear about any more details dammit...

shit ain't fair...

(by the way, original poster, where did you hear this other track? I thought Sunshine was the only one that was put out?)

1562, Tryin' to inbox you

1563, got danged!
Posted by Voodoochilde, Sat Oct-02-04 09:52 AM
oh wow...that shit is hot...

ok, I'm officially jonesin' now...the session that Produced "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" / "Fair But So Uncool" ...wow...that shit...whew...

i just dug out my old cd with 'Everybody' and listened to these two back to back...first "Everybody" followed by "Fair" which i'm just hearing for the first time recently :)...merci...

gotDANGED that shit is NICE! They were in a groove in the studio for real. Natural as hell...damn. I LOVE this. THIS is the shit i want. there are some folks who are just SUPPOSED to be creatin shit together you know? You can tell that the ebb and flow, the yin & yang , the force the mojo or whatever is just right enough to create the chemistry & tension...and out of that usually comes some great shit. It almost seems effortless to the listener (though it's probably not so to the performers)...but to the listener, it's like it's just 'sposed ta be you know...the shit is so NATURAL and alive feeling. Thats some GREAT work ya'll...classics without a doubt. Whew...

man...and just imagine these two jams along with the OTHER tracks they said they messed around with in that same session?? are you kidding me?

ShEEEEit..thats an ALBUM right there.

...the sad thing is we'll probably never get to hear the whole session though

...dang...

cool but so unfair

all that stuff will get released either as 10year anniversary repackaged stuff ( Brownsugar 10year anniversay next year hope they release some outtakes and live stuff )

or

If D dies prematurely (which i sincerely hope he doesn't)

Raphael Saadiq was on some 'I'd like y'all to pray for my good friend D'angelo' when he was caught up in the vibe on stage at Jazz Cafe on sunday night he followed up with a really weak back track 'i dunno y i just said that cos he's ok but i want y'all to pray for him'

I was like thats a little strange so many rumours about D bin strung out and stuff and heres Raphael asking people to pray for him

D seems like he's going the way of Donny Hathaway 2 Albums Soul Legend and Gone before his time I've given up hope of ever seeing another album from the man

at least with Voodoo we knew for a fact he was working on stuff and just taking his time as well as the rumours

now there ain't nothing but rumours they say there's no smoke.....

1573, now this is interesting.

Sunday just gone 26 september

Raphael just did a 5 night stand at Jazz Cafe

Some dude got on stage at the end of the show after the band had left and just Raphael was playing the bass

dude started playing (erm well not actually playing) raphaels guitar

raphael was cool (its the kinda random thing that happens at jazz cafe) but the dude couldn't play for sh*t i mean he really couldn't play for doo doo

then some drummer came up and sat in on the kit
he saved dudes ass cos Raphael had clowned non guitar playin dude hard

me personally i woulda given dude 30secs to show that he had some chops to go with his arrogance and then put my foot in his ass for bin so disrespectful
1575, RE: now this is interesting.
Posted by zionites16, Fri Oct-01-04 05:30 AM
okay, that's a little strange but I can dig that shit happens when folks have been drinking...

a little off topic but hopefully Saadiq was just thinking of his good friend being @ the jazz cafe and all and hopefully D' is doing just fine. but it does still add to the speculation nonetheless, cause i know friends don't just say that shit to say it.
1576, this is not good-

1589, if no d'angelo material gets leaked, then how-
Posted by betelgeuse, Fri Oct-01-04 08:15 AM
did that "marvine" track get on the market?

you know, that little instrumental thing (produced by jay dee)
that fades into that ahmad jamal/pete rock jam that d and quest
recreated (same as the interlude inbetween "feel like makin love"
and "greatdayndamornin") where you hear marvin gaye say: "yeah,
i am very happy about the record, i.."--

how did THAT leak and nothing else?

i'm not talking about live bootlegs of course. i'm talking about
studio material. you know, normally i'm against leakage. but to
be honest, not in this case. i could really use some "new"
material by the man. and i take it so do a lot of you.

so let's focus on this for a minute...
is this in fact true he's been working with him, or is it maybe just a guest guitar on a track or two, cause i'm thinking Spanky will definately be on the album and I'm certain that D' will be on guitar a bunch too. So what I might be thinkin is D'
is smart enough to know the only thing better than some great guitar is 2 or 3 great guitars going, complimenting each other, and different tracks, different styles, and tones can lead to some DEEP tracks. this should be interesting.

1619, thank you soooo much

No one really knows what's happening with this cat.
Those that know don't say.
Those that say don't know.

I would of course like to hear more from a prolific singer songwriter like him. But EVERY artist hits highs and lows.
Even Q-Love has got to have his bad days.

ONE: The way he deals with it is he's talented, professional and he knows it and has the resume to prove it, and

TWO: At the end of the day he knows it's a business and grew up knowing this and seen some older cats make mistakes and get taken advatnge of...

I seen tha episode of the Sopranos where "Hesh" the Jewish music gangster mogul has all the rights to the music. It must've been be that way with Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and countless others from Chess in Chicago.

When your high it's when everyones singing your praises.
When your low no one seems to care.
It doesn't help when everyone tries to out do you.
Then you become focused on howe to OUTDO people as opposed to just doing what got you KNOWN in the first place.

In the music BIZ competition must be HARD. Everyone wants to be the next Marvin or Donny.
An industry that's almost based on copycatting everyones vibe and style has got to be a tough place to make a living.

I guess we may never know...
1628, it's a shame quest won't open his mouth-
Posted by betelgeuse, Sat Oct-09-04 04:30 PM
on the other hand, when d strikes back with quest by his side
we'll be grateful he didn't give us all the goodies up front.

still.. getting confirmed that d' IS actually recording, would be
bliss. but i guess that already falls under "asking for too much".

p.s. this post SHOULD reach the 100 mark. why? just because.

1629, quest won't open his mouth?!

That's what this site has been all about.

If dirts going down with D'M Archer that's his business and his family's alone.

Besides the artists need the producers to add to the mix and also they need to TRUST em with thier music, concepts, ideas, and creative idiosyncracies.

Plus/If they put all thier biz in the street it takes away from the mystique and the enigma that artists need to build on to sell and promote thier vision.

D'angelo needs to just sit down and as Stevie said
" Have a talk with God"...

or how about the Earth Wind and Fires's advice and just
" Getaway "

maybe he should just sit down and talk to STEVIE.

it only takes a "yes" to confirm that he's in the studio. i
believe that would please a lot of folks. even if the answer
is "no"--

now you can only hold on to rumors. who can you trust?

true. but again, a simple "yes" or "no" would be enough for me.
nobody has to spill the magic. i see your point though.
