New Common Album Tastes Nothing Like Chocolate,
?uestlove Says
09.18.2001 7:56 AM EDT

Despite the critical and
commercial success of Like
Water for Chocolate, Common is
going in a completely different
direction with his follow-up
project, according to the
Chicago MC's good friend and
frequent collaborator Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson.

" is called Electric Circus," said ?uestlove, who laid
down tracks for the LP and is one of the project's executive
producers. " Dark Side of the Moon
plus Ziggy Stardust plus Prince Paul in a blender.
He is breaking every rule known to man."

Common hasn't completely turned a deaf ear on the age-old
adage "If ain't broke don't fix it." ?uestlove said that as he did
on Like Water for Chocolate, Common is calling on fellow
members of the Soulquarians clique, such as singers Erykah
Badu and Bilal and producers Jay Dee and James Poyser, to join
him on Electric Circus. English dance artist Omar will also be a
part of the lineup this time around.

"The usual suspects ," ?uest said. "But
we're doing stuff we normally wouldn't do. I know
doesn't want to do an album that sounds like his last album. ...
We have songs that defy form, defy time, defy melodic structure.
This is his version of ... I won't say On the Corner by Miles Davis,
but it's gonna be controversial. A lot of his die-hard people are
going to be thrown off. But at the end of the day he makes
music for him."

?uestlove said Common won't be dropping his LP until close to
the middle of next year despite being just a few songs away
from completion. He cited the hefty competition of the
fourth-quarter release schedule and the need for proper setup
time as the reasons for the delay.

A spokesperson at MCA, Common and ?uestlove's label, could
not be reached.

Who is Omar?!?!

And I think this could be interesting, almost as anticipated as the Rotts next album, except for the fact that COMMON GETS 2 BEFORE ROOTS GET 1!

Sorry....got a little carried away there and hopefully they will get BT's and Roots albums will drop by then.

But, please people, no complaints when it doesn't go triple plat or something. Cause all those Power station listeners that just discovered Common with "The Light" will probably be the first to abandon ship.

Stay the course. Make good music.

BOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! that's a pretty lame reason to delay an album--hefty competition? if com and ?uest are confident about this new direction, then why hold out on us? LAME!

of course, maybe mtv just made that up (fingers crossed) ....

Electric Train? Sounds stupid to me. Oh joy.. I just see Common slipping already. Daaaaaaaaag!! A whole album of joints like "A Song Called (Pimp)" and "Funky For You"? Nooooooooooooo!! He didn't have to go all out and change his whole style just to avoid making Like Water For Chocolate pt. II!! This is so bad. I hope this album is good, cause I might have to give it the Nastradamus treatment if it isn't.

I hope I like it.. but I can tell it's gonna be SO CORNY. Please listen to it throughly Comm, and REALLY make sure you wanna put it out. Nevermind, I guess he's just making his music for him, go ahead then. I still don't think I'm gonna be feelin it, though.

>ask brainchild, he heard some...

here are vague recollections...
-----------
"new position"?, no... silver apples.

(song starts) 3!!!! (brain immediately skips to next track) but the song just started! i know... but i can already tell it's a 3.

"man... i'm feelin this.. but i can tell people are gonna hate"

"boom.. clap.. boom... clap... boom............... clap... boom..."

this is a 2

"okay... so this isn't finished... but everytime you hear Com say 'Keep on', someone else will join in..."

(track 1 plays)... (track 2 plays)... "i bet you'll never guess where we recorded these" (track 3 plays)... !!!!!!!

"...but spike didn't use it... it sounded kinda like this"

ack... 1. sorry.

"can i hear that Prince joint again?"

"so uhh... what exactly was the secret to Double Trouble?" "well... what I did was..."

"so i asked cara to get me tickets to sade in los angeles... it turns out i got front row tickets for musiq & india arie"

ok.. so those last 2 had nothing to do with Com's album, but i thought i'd share anyway.

I'm starting to miss the gold teeth and guns from my old Priority Records days when it was all so simple.....hehehehe.

Seriously, I'm hoping Common can have it both ways (if it is his goal), to make an album for himself and still connect with the masses. The whole album doesn't have to connect with the masses to get a plaque, just a couple of hit joints to use as bait ala Outkast/Stankonia. But y'all have heard me say that before.
Y'all know MCA's counting on going to radio w/Common and to get a plaque again (hopefully a different colored plaque).

Also, I haven't heard anything new yet.

For me anyway. I hope that it really is different, though. (Not that I don't love everything else he's ever done... except half of Can I Borrow A Dollar). The thing that makes me mad is that artists always say... "Nobody is ready for this. This is gonna be something like you've never heard. This is gonna change the way people think about music. This is on some next next shit."
And then I can't tell the difference between that and their last album. I AM WILLING TO LET COM GROW!!! I lvoe how each album has it's own sound. Com never ceases to amaze me. I'm waiting patiently.

will MCA let such an experimentally sounding lp be put out? there is the music that com makes for himself, and Im with that, but as the man himself said on the skit on lwfc "this a business, I hope you aint gone too far to realize that." Promotions operate on whether or not the company feels you can deliver that hit, so caution may be necessary in making sure the sound isnt too left field. But Im sure (or hope at least) this has already been considered

Personally, I'm hoping this is a landmark album for Comm. Just hearing about it has made me think of all the great artists that went against the grain of what was considered "true to their art form" and changed the face of how we look at their music as well as what we consider "true to the form". Most of us dig the folks who kick an energy wholly their own into what we hear and recognize that what's coming out is coming out of their soul. If Comm was to make his music for anyone else but himself, it wouldn't be Comm in my opinion. If we simply "followed the leader" we'd have Puffy's and Limp Biscuit's and others that are doing nothing to push music in a different direction, only to make money. The funny thing to me is, we are in a different musical era where we need to look at the business side as well as creativity and find the happy balance between the 2, which a lot of cats out there aren't doing.....some just the business others just the creativity. I dunno about you, but I'd rather see creative folks out there then the money hungry.

Anyways, I know it won't make much difference since I'm just a loley Mailroom clerk in Denver.....but you just do whatever the fuck you want Comm 'cause I'm sure whatever you decide to put out will be dope.
14758, Quest and Pink Floyd
Posted by El_essence, Wed Sep-19-01 09:10 AM
I posted this somewhere else already but I'll put it here in hopes that Quest replies to it:

Really not intending to be an asshole. But I remember reading somewhere that Quest described parts (if not all) of Voodoo had some similarities to Dark Side of the Moon. I don't know the exact quote so please forgive me. I'm bringing it up partly because 1) I felt that was an odd comparison and 2) He mentions the same album in describing Com's electric circus.

I found the comparison odd not because of the different genres but mainly because I nothing similar. Was quest, referring to the technical side of things? If so, maybe but even sonically I found DSOTM a little more challenging. That is not to say that Voodoo isn't a masterpiece, but definitely different. The only similarities I picked up on were some of the changes in between songs and the random vocal embellishments underneath the music. But production-wise, Voodoo was much muddier and stank (love ya'll for that btw) while DSOTM was more layered (ie. "Great gig in the Sky") and clean.

Anyways Quest, if you could elaborate a little on what you mean when you say Voodoo and Electric Circus have this Pink Floyd thing going on I'd appreciate it. Enlighten a bruva

I'm anticipating many new albums from all of my favorite artists, and Common is one of them. LWFC was one of the most innovative albums in hip-hop ever. I didn't love every beat on it, but I liked most of them. The lyrics were definetely on point, as usual with Common. One of the most important things to remember in life, is nobody is perfect, nobody, therefore there is no standard to be compared to. Quest and anybody else can try and describe Common and his music all they want, free will for all, but I think Common explains himself thru and in his music better than anybody else can otherwise. So Imma let him speak for himself.

"Imma child of the uh, the 87 uh, from the streets get on the beat and go uh, I could break it down like when ever you uh, on some KRS we can for ever type uh, you know you shouldn't rhyme like uh, let them pussy niggaz get in your mind like uh, baby boy you can do it take your time do it, if you get the chance, to be a man in a b-boy stance and advance from the go, I trace outerspace with a uh, the babysitter of styles, I travel miles with bitches and thru the ritual of the real uh, your platinum but real uhhs dont feel ya, you sample real uhs and then filter, I'm built to last at last I'm free, the Roots and thats me be the family tree.
I style for the ooh, wild for the ooh, baby girl lets go half on a child for the ohh, lick shots pop, lock and flow for the ooh...now I talk to drums and walk thru slums and thoughts that's ooh, instinct to hustle, divided by the struggle, plus a couple scuffles in uptown shuffle, even with the sound muffled, I bust thru, narrow gates, the king sized thoughts is Pharaoh shaped, before I came up I had to elevate, let a nigga move where he wanna move up to, you dont like how I'm living? well fuck ooh, I stuck to what I was on..." So now this record is changing up the sound again...

do the LWFC fans get pissed?

go way back....all his albums are VERY different. com is mad introspective and he is making steady progressions toward another level. "can i borrow a dollar?" flexed his verbal wordplay skills. "resurrection" was comprehension of his surroundings. "one day it'll all make sense" was comprehension of himself in his surroundings. "lwfc" was him saying "i think i've figured some things out -- let me try something". now that he has tried it, he will bear the fruits of what he has now learned on the next opus. hearing the progression of a brilliant artist "on wax" is something i think we all should enjoy. and com will bring it even better on the next one.

yeah....that was all dickriding....fuck it. the nigga makes MUSIC. i appreciate that shit.

I also like the production on "funky For You" and "A Film Called (Pimp)" Here is more about Common in his own words:

"They call me a pimp, and you know what that mean, I'm making profit, see I pimp internationally, I'm nationally recognised, locally accepted, I'm coming with the truth, that's the only method...asking her name wasn't the way to approach her, see she had game, she needed me to coach her, expose her to some paper freedom and culture, the way a righteous pimp is suppose to...I felt the vibe like Roy Ayers, she was used to seeing pimps in furs and gators, told her I'm an innovator, a gentleman of leisure thats in tune with nature, hold Common's hand, Imma take you to a pimp's promise land, where no man can break ya...I pimp without a pause, for the cause I'm a rebel you been on these streets, I'm trying to take you to another level, used to the same game, cats saying the same thing, you going to hoe underground or hoe mainstream?...you know why? I'm thinking bigger than biggettes, furs and slick cars, or having you on the corner trickin in strip bars, if you become mine the world will be ours,
respect the game and universal law...girl you getting beside yourself, I'm trying to guide you, help you see inside yourself, I pimp the vision, Imma help you see the light, have you covering your body, and have you eating right...I pimp from Brazil to uhm Tokyo, had Japanese broads saying "tochi wado", bring 'em back to the states to turn dates from Europe, made the dirtiest of hoes stay purest...what ever happened to loyalty? dont you wanna become royalty, on the streets selling ass and oils for me? but you on this hoe-asis and really I can't reach ya, fuck you then, I'm bout to be a preacher." if Artists are makin' music for themselves then why do they release them to the masses?

if their wanna share their thoughts with the masses then why sell them?why not give them for FREE?
I've always wondered about that though!

As for the album as long as Com doesn't try to sing then that's cool. His rhymes are always tight and the beats, well i just hope they ain't wack, but so far i dig Com's last 3 albums.

And Yeah if it's wack cop the Arsonists "Date of Birth" those kids never dissapoint.

I think all the talkbacks on Commons new jawn are funny.

Firstly, to a previous poster... You're right, the original Golden Brown song is by The Stranglers and in answer to your question... It is actually about heroin!!! Strange but true.

Secondly, my Mother always tells me; "Nothing becomes great without adversity"
Ali would not have been CALLED the greatest if all his fights were walkovers. Nelson Mandela would not have been CLASSED as great if there was never any political struggle. Great is defined by the measure of it's oppostion. In this instance, the opposition is... YOU, and it sounds to me like Common may be on the dawn of releasing a GREAT album!!

Like all true artists, different directions will be taken and when they are, they will always be met with the maddening crowd. Probably Common's new album isn't going to please the ears of everyone who listens to it, but an artist- forget that, a human being is entitled to grow. It is the evolution theory and it isn't at the expense of their listeners. The first person you aim to please as an artist is yourself and you hope that people RELATE to where you're coming from. Art is a form of release and more importantly EXPRESSION. Who are we to tell eachother what to express? It's so strange how millions of people including myself thoroughly dislike A&R's of record companies but what is more strange is how much you are beginning to sound like them.

Why this is funny to me is because The Beatles' Seargent Pepper LP was released to the exact same pre- critism and is now classed as one of the greatest albums of all time. Whichever way, when one group of listeners is lost, another is gained... whatever the sound or image or in the case of Seargent Pepper, both.

"Like Water For Chocolate" was a GREAT album with a great sound. Whatever the direction the Soulquarians were taking, they arrived there with Common's Jawn. So wherever they are taking the new Common LP, I've got my ticket to ride!! I personally loved "A Film Called Pimp" and it's intro was hilarious. Common has always been a unique individual and unique people will always if not please us, surprise us and that's why he is one of the most stand-out MC's of his generation.

I will conclude now with this... Look y'all, in life, don't be followers, be leaders and embrace those that lead because when you do... you will never be guilty of pre- judging. If your gonna judge an album... Extend to the artist a tad of respect by at least listening to it first.

More power Common and as we in the 'hood say in London... MORE FIRE!!!!!!!

If an artist made art for masses, then what is art?
Self expression....expression for those who aint so good at expressing self...
if you notice, audience can pick out brown-nosing ass artists who can't self-develop and create...that's why they go to God like Ma$e did, quoting but unquoting some Common...
and yeah, I want to have a conversation with these folks who did not approve of Brother ?westion's style of percussion, but for some reason, I think it was the JayDee styling they did not approve of...and these people are from Detroit like myself, and do not have much knowledge of this part of the Soulquarian entourage...but Detroit people don't like sh*t if they can't pop their collars to it...and it's amazing how well known Jaydee is but people here get that owl on their shoulder if you mention him ..... :"Who?!"
for some reason, ever since I was a child, I loved every single one of Jaydee's mainstream products and had no idea it was the same producer on every track...I guess it's just a matter of taste..
anyhow I am off base...I wanna hear this Electric Circus before I go floating off talking about I don't like some sh*t I haven't even heard yet...plus like I said before, Common is growth...and a lot of people just never grow up
