14629, Phrenology is a bad title..
Posted by Steve, Thu Sep-20-01 08:22 PM
just my opinion though, it just isnt a nice sounding word.
Plus its a theory of an early neuroscientist who thought different parts of the brain did the main 20 emotional expressions or something weird. I remember learning it at some point in school.
anyways though, just my opinion, but I think another title would be better.
How about "The Steve Album".
Just playing.
ok.

read:
The Roots next LP is beginning to take shape, and the group is scurrying to have it ready for a tentative June 2002 release date; titles being mentioned are Introducing The Roots, and Phrenology. They have currently recorded seven tracks, and want to complete at least five more. The group is also still debating on what track will be the lead-single, and the candidates right now are “Rock Ya”, and “Pussy Galore.” Meanwhile, Black Thought’s highly anticipated solo-LP has been given a tentative Feb 2002 release date.

phrenology? this is a good title.

it makes me think to a revolutionary , deep, conscious, experimental album.

while "introducing the roots" sounds like a gangsta album....

do u think the roots are a gangsta band?

hey ?uest, use the title u like, but please...give us our album as soon as possible!!!!!

I dont see how, maybe Im really gonna have to study this word because when seeing it defined before it seemed like it didnt relate to music at all. Im sure they know what theyre doing though, every other title was simpler than this one and made sense.

>while "introducing the roots" sounds like
>a gangsta album....
>
>do u think the roots are
>a gangsta band?

here is where you lost me. say you soulquarian had an act, maybe yall were named the soulquarianos or something (dont wanna get confused with the jay dee, bilal, com, erykah and them), yall paid dues for years, made damn good music, had a fan base but never got what yall deserved.

grammy night comes michael stipe is presenting your joint and says "well in theory the winner is the soulquarianos"

all the work you've put in and you just win a grammy, yet close to half the people at the staples center either dont know your act or havent heard of them till recently.

introducing the roots was clever as shit considering how long theyve been around yet are just becoming familiar faces to those outside of concert venues.

now introducing the soulquarianos, THAT would have been a gangster title.

i may be wrong. but there was something falling apart (or had fallen apart) on each of the covers. It was more than just an eye catching marketing scheme. although it was one hell of an eye catching marketing scheme

the title for the new jawn should be "Fuck you, pay me"

Things fall apart
and tend to shatter. (c) You got me

I believe the band knew that "You got me" would be THE big hit on the record, so they used a line from the "best" song to name the album.

Eric B and Rakim use to do it all the time.

ok true LOL.

But I am looking at is as far as it being a title..its kinda like when common wanted to name his album that longass title..it coulda had something to do with the music but it wasnt a good title.
But yea, I mean if the songs all reflect the concept of the title than thats cool.
I was just saying, not like I want yall to call it Roots La Familia LOL.
but damn stop mentioning that you've recorded the songs, I want to hear them damnit LOL.

I truly believe that the average hiphop head in the street listening to hot 97 is pretty dumb. They'll hear that word, get intimidated, and say "fuck that wack hippie shit" like they do now.
That title alone will scare off alot of potential consumers...leaving the Roots with their standard pseudo-intellectual, backpacking, white guy freshman in college (sorry steve), Headwrapping audience that they already have.
Those titles ?uest mentioned "____ 2001,"" _____ forever," and Ride or Die are easily understood by the average target market. People can understand what they mean, so they assume that they'll understand whats on the CD when they pop it into their CD player.
It *is* that deep. With the exception of an Outkast...who can get away with naming an album "aquemini" or "stankonia" only because they have a reputation for being a little more on the oddball side of things...the title is a very important part of the marketing and promotion of an album. Phrenology (if thats how you spell it) would probably be great for a rock album...but for the Roots?
I havent heard any of it yet, and I have no idea how much is done. Honestly, it would be great if I heard some of it, and immediately realized *why* this title for the album makes so much sense. But without having heard any of it, all i'm left with is what i've heard from the roots in the past, and this new title that just doesnt seem to fit.
David Geffen would have *loved* the title. But the roots arent Guns N Roses or Whitesnake, either.
Just my opinion.

Posted by Approaching, Fri Sep-21-01 04:01 AM
is phrenology now gonna include some of the black thought solo album material?

i know i read that Thought's album is on the backburner again...

i know i read that Phrenology may contain "hits"...

i know i read that Phrenology is gonna showcase goodies from each member's grab-bag...

so...wouldn't it make sense to tie the two together??

i can easily imagine a situation in which BT would be unable to complete a "solo" album to his own satisfaction...without the support of his hometeam. Enter The Roots...adding their own individual spins to make a complete, well-rounded masterwork...

I think you're right dude I bet BT wont have a solo album, they are going to pour his shit like pussy galore etc into the roots next LP. Also, if this wasn't true we'd have heard about it now, but as anyone noticed all the secrecy going on with BT's album and the roots new one? You dont see that kind of stuff with Dilated, Common, etc. Something's up thats why.

If not, few will care how cohesive the album is.

People like you who make jokes like this should be banned, though. I mean that.

But seriously, folks...Phrenology???!!! This is the first time I'm hearing about this potential name and, although I'm sure the music is going to be great as usual, I think this title is pretty stupid. ?uest posted here before about, Well what if it makes sense with the music etc. etc...fair enough, I suppose. But when I think phrenology (which doesn't happen often, I assure you), I think of some crackpot nerdy scientist with a dumb idea who ended up being a laughingstock. It's like Rorschach (sp.?) tests, only dumber. In the end, Mr. ? knows best, but my gut reaction, for whatever its worth, is find another title. Whatever. Or is it, "free knowledge, G." Which would be closer to the correct pronunciation.

Oh well.

will it have deep verses about brain activity and the thought process?

The cover could be a brain growing out of the ground, ie the brain comes out of the roots, etc. Or a black brain - as in black thought!

(I just hope its more than a title)

even though it is, and the people making the music are. I've gotta agree with nazdak. when you first look at the word, you're not totally sure how its pronounced, and sounds all intellectual and shit, which it is, but people may be turned off by it. whatever. i don't care much. its the content that counts.

Phrenology would be a fine title if the fans who got theRoots the plaque and the grammy were your loyal following. but these are new fans who are still new too theRoots' music (this is why I think Introducing... was a perfect title) and naming the album something that will alienate the newer fans before they even take a listen might make them think that "you got me" was a fluke.. i'd like to think that the average listener is more open minded than that but ....

I think No Longer At Ease would have been a great title. I know that none of these people have ever heard any of the music on the album, but it kind of describes the current situation of the Roots. As they continue to succeed and have a greater spotlight shown on them, as did the character in the book, it becomes increasingly more difficult to do what they want to do. ?, was it ever even a consideration?
14680, isnt Phrenology quackery?
Posted by Mindbender, Fri Sep-21-01 01:10 PM
to be honest, i thought that wasnt the best title when i first heard it too...

i mean, i have no idea what direction Roots crew is going for the 2001 season but yeah, catchy titles help albums stay in people's heads... OUTKAST's titles are different, but easy to swallow once you hear it the first time and go huh?! whats an Akweminni, whuddyfuck is a Stayankoneeuh, A-Liens with an T?....

and that first album title... southernokayplayalistenthistitleissolongyoullneverforgetitwebetterbeDOPEtodosomethinglikethissobuythealbumcauseweresomesouthernPIMPSonthemicwithFATbeatsandwehaveCOOLnameslikeBigBoi :)

?uest, call it "Growing Pains and Pleasures"

from what i know of the little infomation that escapes, i say that fits (but what do i know)

Why don't y'all hold a contest, exclusively for registered Okayplayers to enter to come up with the title.

Rules could be worked out, but it should be limited to okayplayers who have registered log-in names by a certain date -- just to make sure nobody fradulent tries to enter.

I already got my entry....

14683, Critics Title
Posted by Brandard, Sat Sep-22-01 07:33 AM
this is the kind of title that music critics will eat up.

unusual word that connects thematically to the album.

I smell a NY Times full page spread on in the Arts & Leisure section when this album finally drops
