14447, Artists that should be on OKplayer?
Posted by guest, Thu Dec-23-99 07:16 AM
With the coming of Common to the site it got me thinking about other artists who would fit well as OKplayers. I was thinking particularly about musicians such as Mos Def, or maybe Angie Stone. To me the criteria is musicians that are all about the music and who truly care about the world of hip-hop and soul. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. So basically, the question is who are the artists you would most like to see on this site.
14448, ....and the nominees are:

14449, gotta be BlackStar
Posted by analog2digital, Fri Dec-24-99 03:11 PM
If anyone else gets added anytime soon, I'd look for it to be these guys. they don't have a history of collaborating with the Roots like D'Angelo and Common, but the mutual respect between the camps is evident.Actually they're all more like one BIG camp.
Plus, they're all on MCA now (though by that logic, Sauce Money, GZA and K-Ci have just as much of a chance).
That's my best guest. But then there is always OutKast...
14450, Amel Larrieux

Somehow...I think Amel Larrieux would fit in quite lovely with the boards. Mos Def would fit lovely too. He can even bring Talib Kweli along if he wants!! LOL
The Infamous DVSJ
Two recent collaborations w/ the Roots that definately need to be inducted into Okayplayerdom are Zap Mama and Les Nubians.
I also agree w/ Black Star and MeShell N'degeocello (sp?).

"If our profanity offends you, look around you and see how destructively society is profaning itself. I think that Les Nubians would be a nice addition to the okayplayer family. The joint that The Roots kicked out for them was nice. Besides that, they would be a good addition 'cause not alot of people are up on them.
peace.

"doin' this rap not to get noticed/...you can quote this/travelin' wit' my friends.../provin' we the dopest/...is better than/...my name../lite up in bright lights/or, wearin' a tuxedo at the grammys and fight nights" -psc
"its so funny how most emcees be babbling on.../about the battle, but, never stepped foot in babylon" -orion south
" i can't see no one f***in' wit' me like aids tainted cock/with no emotions/intelligence force slide like spock/blaming your parents for being born into a world where i'm.../sole controlla/where the wack don't last past two days.../that's why my nicknames eboula" -basik
"i drove f***in' wagon that you jumped on.../and got you pumped on.../the underground sound/now it thumps on" -the grouch

I think if anyone should be added it's Color Me Bad. Those cats were the first on the multi-racial r&b tip. I'm just buggin. I think Mos Def and Talib Kweli (Black Star). Seems pretty obvious why and I heard the group just signed w/ MCA (true?). If not, then definitely Color Me Bad.

"I leave scientists mentally scarred/Triple extra large/Wild like rock stars who smash guitars"--Inspectah Deck

Jef lee Johnson should be the next one. Why?Cuz he is from Philly. And Nou ra sang backing on one of his songs on the new album "The Singularity".
He is wildly diverse and has the session credits to back up his musical skill. Plus he already has okayplayer session credits including thee new Common!!
After jef lee id say Omar. Omar is from the uk and seriously is one of Uks underrated talented musicians/vocalist. He never got any love from the USA. With a home like okayplayer I think he could build his Us fanbase. Hes been working on his 5th album for a label in France. He represents Soul/funk/jazz as much as D'angelo did. BUT nobody in america picked on it except select american critics.
Those are my two picks
PS jeflee johnson aint me its a tribute name!
Macy Gray is so so nice! I'm listening to her album right now and I love love love it.
Also De La Soul >>seriously<< needs to represent on the internet... all Native Tongues really... now THAT would be a site to see! tack Mos Def right on there too. If it was an official native tongues site, they'd have a cult built around their music... more then they do now FOR REAL
Bahamadia belongs here??!!
Also those Project Blowed/Good Life cats could use a good site(?) but seems the ball is in their court on that one...
14492, Ms. Scott!
Posted by Timmy, Thu Dec-30-99 03:39 PM
Everyone's posted the obvious ones, except for this one! Jill Scott, aside from being a phenomenal vocalist on You Got Me and Com's 8 Minutes, completely blew me (and my unsuspecting friends) away at the Roots live album taping. And that's coming from a guy who generally really dislikes R&B vocals.
Of course, I haven't actually heard word of her releasing an album or even any solo material, which would make an OkaySite difficult to stock with much interesting material. But I thought she at least deserved a mention!
=Timmy=

14494, Top Choices!
Posted by guest, Fri Dec-31-99 08:08 AM
Mos Def is my number one pick. His music is definately dedicated to the love of hip-hop music, and it's easy to see that the man has such beautiful dreams as to where hip-hop is going and what can be done with hip-hop music!
I also would have to pick De La Soul as my number two pick. They've brought such real issues into hip-hop and are themselves. They are unique and should be represented nicely here on okayplayer.com!!
Peace.
"Whatever is true, whatever is NOBLE, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable...think about such things."
Philippians 4:8
She's like really dope and has two albums out, but continues to get dicked over by her label. Her last album came out in 98 and was called Walter T. Smith. She had a single and video for a song called "Runnin".
Two other names I can think of ...of Course Amel!!! and what about N'Dea Davenport.
"Rap is outta control...." -EPMD circa 1992
"Uphold your Righteous Name
Skip the fame and f*ck the games
Develop and maintain a sense of awareness without being careless...
A nappy-head warrior such as myself is fearless and ready to expose those
who walk around with their spiritual sides all closed..." -me circa 1995

How about a local cat like Last Emperor, anybody who has heard him know he is one of the best MC's coming up right now and he seems to having trouble getting some promotion from Interscope.I know people would rather the next OkayArtist be somebody who they know and is already established, but we all needed a hookup at one point or another.

Fuck a mic check,I bring my flow in cash-Common
DjKn0wledge-the lonely okayplayer in Wilkes-Barre,Pa (Damn I miss Philly)
