i think "africa" maybe, but "the root" would be cool, and more likely to get radio play.

Although I'd love to hear "Africa" as the next single (not to mention the VIDEO!!!!), I think it might be better to wait on that one (seeing as though ALL them songs will be singles eventually) and go with Spanish Joint. It definitely has radio appeal and is a MONSTER of a song to boot!
love and respect,
El Rey
"I prefer to speak of the impossible, because we already know too much about what is possible" Silvio Rodriguez
"If our profanity offends you, look around you and see how destructively society is profaning itself. "greatdayinthemorning" is probably the best bet. it's kinda uptempo, downhome... fits onto most "urban" radio formats. you don't wanna go with another ballad, and "spanish joint" is, dare i say, too... musical for a single (i never thought i'd see the day that i'd be saying shit like that...)
13979, yeah

"Spanish Joint". "Fel like makin' Love" is the more obvious choice though. "The Root" would be hot too.
13997, Or is this too obvious?
Posted by MrBastard, Wed Feb-09-00 06:32 AM
"Feel Like Makin' Love" has got to be the next single. Old-ass (my age, 29) program directors like songs that are familiar. It's a song D and band could do on Leno, Kathie Lee, etc w/o freaking everyone out. Logical progression from "Untitled".
Add Erykah Badu for radio, video. I mean, who *doesn't* like Erykah, and she'd prolly jump at the exposure since she's out of sight out of mind at the moment. If Erykah'll take that thing off her head, do "9 1/2 weeks" type video (recreate food/sex scene, no one's done that yet) w/P. Hunter or that Dark guy that does pornos. Trust me, she fine.
Erykah shown as hot chick for once, D gets to take shirt off, everybody happy.
Release as single w/badu version, Lhill version (?), 12 minute "Untitled", enhanced CD w/"untitled" video. Gold single, at least. Subsequent pressings of "Voodoo" includes badu version.
MrB, A&R
I know that Feel like Makin Love would be the LOGICAL thing to do, but why go with the expected? Why not do something different. I mean, clearly the whole thrust of the album is about taking a radical turn away from everything else that is out there. Why not wow us with something unexpected. Something that will make us think "damn, that brother's on to some next level ish!", not that "Makin Love" isn't, but people have already seen D nekkid singing his slow love jam. If not "Spanish Joint" then I cast my vote for "greatdayinna mornin"
love and respect,
El Rey
"I prefer to speak of the impossible, because we already know too much about what is possible" Silvio Rodriguez
"If our profanity offends you, look around you and see how destructively society is profaning itself. Posted by guest, Wed Feb-09-00 09:58 AM
I figured "Feel Like Making Love" would be a candidate for the next single (what is it about D's covers that are so sweeeet? cover album in the future? i dunno) But i'm surprised no one has mentioned "Chicken Grease"... it may not be the best song on VOODOO, but the backyard, home-cooked flavor would have all the barbeque jams jumping this spring/summer... not to mention a nice old school-styled/performance video with it, radio would eat it up like some buttery greens, baby!

In the state of mind radio is in today, releasing a cover song is the safest bet..."feel like makin love" will get you the airplay you need to push the album to the next plateau. perhaps lauryn can show up for the remix (and if she's too busy, then jaguar....meow! hah).
ps: "africa" is my favorite and i sympathize with the argument that releasing 'africa' would send out some powerful vibes...however, the more successful the *album* is, the more people who will be exposed to that song...the more props quest will get as a drummer (smile)...and the more the industry will be encouraged to release more beautiful music on the same vibe...
Peace,
Spirit
http://amphibians.iuma.com<;/a>
http://infiniteloop.iuma.com<;/a>
DC hip-hop is on the rise...
"High grade when I create beats/if I don't get signed/I'ma be the most dope bum that ever walked the streets" -
Aychell (HL, of Khemystery)
"If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, it's probably a tool of the conspiracy" - unknown

In my opinion, Voodoo is the hottest ish to come out in a good minute. The main reason that I dig D'Angelo is because I feel like he is an artist. What he creates has nothing to do with what's on the radio but more of what he is feeling. He is bears his soul in his music. I have nothing but respect for that. I dig feel like Making Love but I think to release that as a single is somewhat of a contradiction to the artistry and orginality of Voodoo. I would release "Great Day In the Morning" next. It is upbeat but you still feel the music. Can easily find itself in radio rotations. I guess I'm being selfish because I can't wait until it gets a little warmer and I can ride around DC with the sunroof down pumping "The Root" acting like I'm unware of how hot that ish is. Or The Line it doesn't matter. I just can't wait to give this joint some exposure.

Peace

the radio will no doubt play the shit out of "...making love." but i would say fuck 'em and release "the root."
the album gets better with every listen, by the way.
14022, "feel like making love" is definitely "radio-friendly" choice, but...........
Posted by KD, Wed Feb-09-00 09:03 AM
i'd like to see either "the root" or "one mo' gin" as the next joint...the vibes on both tracks have you head-noddin before d even lays down the vocals...although heartache is a common message, the lyrics to "the root" are really distinctive than other shit tracks that have blew up...not to mention, it's more in tune with the theme of "voodoo"...i think both would also encourage the average listener to see d's "live show" before "feel like making love" would...however, if it is "feel like making love", it would be decent to have a female guest on the vocals (preferably badu or amel)...whatever drops, hit us with a live version of "the line" as a b-side or convince thought to lay down some vocals for the second half of that interude before "the root"...peace!

I have to say that is my favorite song on the album, hands down. That would be the love song of the year if that got released. I know it is a little long, but you can make a quick radio edit for the airwaves.
Picture it kid! I was singing along to that and Feel Like Makin' Love (for obvious reasons) almost instantly. Sing-a-long-ability certainly doesn't hurt in radio, and GreatDayNDaMornin' should be REQUIRED playing on EVERY stations morning drive. While it may not be the easiest song on the album, latin/hispanic flavor is terribly marketable right now and I think PDs on both Urban and Top 40 stations would go for it. In addition, if released now, it would have time to build up steam to be the hot club song for April/May.

Free Jolly Jenkins!!!---Huey Freeman
Love the Erykah plan!
Another q, cuz i know D will be reading. Have u ever wondered about using Indian instruments like sitars and tablas? just a thought! I love your shit as it is, but I know u u be searching all avenues, that would be an interesting on indeed. Reason I ask is cuz I copped this new album by a French Jazz band called Mukta and it was tight. Not like u'r shit though. U are on a whole different level. Serious. Please drop "The Root". I want others to feel what I'm feeling when I hear this track. I want motherfucka's to break out in a uncontrollable sweat with tears rolling down their fucking faces!!!!!! But I know the record company is gonna drop Feel Like Makin' Love as the next single (I like that song). I would just like to see all those who talked shit before standing there with their mouths open in disbelief. And "The Root" is powerful enough to do so. Plus, it's a subject matter that's never been touched in Soul music in a while. And Spanish Joint wouldn't be bad of a choice either. As a matter of fact, it would probably blow away all those radio listeners. That's my say and I'm sticking to it. "She left a dirty stain in my heart I can't refute". Damn!!!!! what a song. Good lawd !!!!

i love "the root" so much that in a way, i wouldn't ever want it to be released to radio (and who am i to feel selfish with a song that isn't mine). something in that song just touches something so deep in me. just too damn good for radio. couldn't bear to hear a cash money song (down here in bounce/booty central Atlanta) follow that. plus, i could hear it on 104.7 (adult contemporary - only place you'll hear someone like angie stone or rahsaan patterson) without "slummin'" over to (alleged) HOT 97.
deejaydub

14051, My 29 cents and some pocket lint...
Posted by Framamind, Wed Feb-09-00 03:08 PM
I'd have to agree with most of the suggestions so far- damn, y'all just jump on a post this or WHAT! j/p
My personal suggestions after countless hours of playing this album whilst sitting at my computer. Since we've all agreed in principle that the next single should be more upbeat. HOWEVER, did y'all stop to notice that 'Untitled' is the slowest tempo track on the album? (with 'Send It On' a close second) So, basically, ANY track would be uptempo from 'Untitled'.
Now, 'Chicken Grease' would be cool, but let's face it: this track feels more like a 'jam session' (and without a doubt is THE bomb track on the album...I can't stop bobbin my head...yikes!!!), and tracks like that aren't necessarily suitable for radio(even though I don't listen to radio).
"Devil's Pie" is essentially 'previously-released' (for lack of a better term) and I would have to say not a contender, since peeps have already heard it.
"Africa" has possibilities (video and what not): but I'm not you can pin down the 'sound and feel' of this track. I mean, I listen to it, and dig it, but I'm befuddled cuz I don't know where to 'categorize' it in my mind. I love that Prince feel to it, but I'm not sure it's single material.
"Feel Like Makin Love" is right in there. Has a great rhythm and 'feel'(heh) to it. And it's a great cover.
So, here are my two choices (told y'all this was my 29 cents!!!):
One of my selections would be "The Root". What else can I say, not only does the music get inside you, but so do the lyrics.
But my first selection would be "The Line". (ha, I went off the beaten path) I just love the feel of this tune, not to mention lyrically stimulating. And the keyboard sound we all know and love!
Put in my vote!!! D,
I think that Feel Like Makin' Love would probably get the most airplay simply because people identify you with love songs and ballads, and also because the song has a smoothness to it, its mellow and soulful. Another option would be Mo'gin, which I don't think any of the other Players have suggested yet. However, as a true fan, I know that you are about so much more than romancing the ladies, and I think that Send it On or Africa would be good songs to convey this to the public. I also imagine a great video for Africa, with maybe some shots of you on the continent, and with your children (if you aren't opposed to them being seen by the public, I know a lot of celebs are). Hope this was helpful, and i'm looking forward to finding out which song you chose.
forever your fan,
ms_superfreak
14057, Your Next Single!
Posted by guest, Wed Feb-09-00 04:12 PM
Well,
I would have to say that the best radio joint you have on there is Feel Like Makin Love--loook how Roberta Flack blew up L'Boogie. It has that hook people will want to keep singing, and with the ignorance of people now a days, I don't think they could handle anything deeper, they would just hate on it, like "untiltled". If not One'MoGin, it would blow up, but it would make me mad to hear played on the radio all the time...I'm selfish. Good-Luck
NajmUdeen aka Nate 2-06-78

hi d'(smile) i would lke to see "Greatdayndamornin'" come out as a single. it has that nice upbeat, smooth sound to it. you know if u make another video like "untitled" somebody goin to buy that joint lol but i really love your songs and i love it that you haven't sold out to the "ice on my wrist" or the "lexusjeep" shit. u keep it real and i like that because it makes artists seem more realistic instead of just 4 that dolla know what i mean? well anyway the next time u see angie tell her the next single she sould drop off her lp is "shoulda been u" that song is my JOINT! lol is that u singin in the background? lol well the next time you're in maryland hit me up wit a e-mail. my address is Sista21@webtv.net cause i would like to know about that song u did wit rykah(that's my girl! lol well love and good luck on your lp

Sup, D' ...
The whole CD is tight, but if I had to choose the next single ... it would be "One Mo'gin". I'm really diggin' that one. And I think it's something radio stations would play. But just like a lot of your other fans, I feel you big-time in "Africa". That song is just ... Wooo! Words can't describe what I feel when listening to it. Anyway, much love D'. I wish you continued success in anything & everything.
P.S. Oh, yeah ... and when you do the video for the next single ... make sure you ain't got no clothes on again ... and also make sure that the cameraman falls down. :o) The rest of you ladies can agree with me on that, right? - LOL.

14060, One Mo'Gin or Feel Like Makin Love

Either song, I think, will have much success. Better yet, make a video cassette and have music videos for all the songs. I'd buy more than 2 of em.
Idea for One Mo'Gin video- D goin back to his hometown after tourin for some months. Runs into an old lady friend. That sets the tone...i.e., he could be on the phone singin the verses to her; THEN he can let her know what he's feelin over a candle lit soul food dinner at her place; THEN he could also express his feelings for her in bed( you know....where he says: "i've never bumped into your kind before or after") ...LAST he bids her farewell...tellin her she can call when things change and whatnot. This could be set in a one-day or a weekend span. Let me stop before i think up somethin else.
A person can only dream...lol

(and I'm not just saying that 'cause "Africa is my descent. okay player maybe I am) but radio is not ready for that yet. The album is #1 so you don't want to slow down the momentum. "Feel Like Making Love" or "Send It On" is what I'd say. "Send it On" HAS HORNS ON IT. When was the last time you heard a horns section on the radio?
If there is a next single after this, please let it be a double sided single with SPANISH JOINT and AFRICA. I aint got no problem wit "Feel Like Makin' Love" as the next single, but me personally 4 nostalgia reasons i guess, my choice would have 2 be "Chicken Grease". Being that I'm 18yrs. old, a lot of my peers aint up on that J.B.'s/Prince funk shit, so I feel if u want put em' up on some "back in the day Soul Train line vibes", it's gotta be "Chicken Grease".
People say they love u and they wanna help, but how can they when u cant help ya self??? -Prince
14070, The Root is a good choice, but Feel like Makin Love is better
Posted by C_Jon, Wed Feb-09-00 10:16 PM
D,
As much as I love the root, I have to go with Feel Like Makin Love. This would be a cool choice for the next single. Radio stations are already playing it and it will be like when you released "crusin" (the remake). 2 cool d joints (Brown Sugar and Lady )released then Crusin. Now it is 2 cool d joints(left to right and Untitled) now Feel like makin Love. I think you should do the root after feel like makin love( it reminds me of a cooler version of Dreamin eyes or something, but this time it got you feenin, but then again that would make it brown sugar huh??anyways)(do not pay too much attention to the parenthesis those are just thoughts to think about)(Now Back to the point)
Now for the video :Instead of having posh love making scences, make it more of a happily ever after vibe or something like the song presents. YOu two getting married: showing you guys with kids.(just a suggestion, it will work if you do not use the married bit) Flowers at work, be creative. Like you two "in the restuarant holding hands" Cuddley sofa scences watching rentals , and of course you should chase her once in a scene in the park. Be cute and fuzzy that is what I saw in my mind the first time I heard this song. ALso do a jazzy club scene where you are both slow dancing and looking into each others eyes and then kiss or something. Or you sing to her be creative.
And please choose a "wholesome" girl. one who has the apperance of a goody-innocent(as a virgin)- motherly- vibe or something. That is the only way this vision will work.

From
a future scriptwriter to a musical genius
C_Jontay

Blessings People, and D'Angelo
I've read all the post, and while I respect all opinions and thoughts...I personally think what would be a viable next single would have to be "Playa, Playa". I've said this from day one, I was blessed with a promo copy, and since you dropped "L&R", which is a midtempo song, and then you did "Untitled", which is a slow track. Now it would only be befitting to bless the world with another mid to uptempo song. I think "Playa Playa" is mad commercial (which is not a diss), but I can see Hot 97, WBLS, and Kiss FM playing this joint. It just seems right. Well that's my two cents indamorning. But if that's not a sure win for you...my next best thought would be "GREATDAYINDAMORNING". It's extremely viable as well. Just think about what I'm saying. Drop "Playa, Playa", then hit them cross the head with Africa, wish that was dropped before "L&R", it's a great song for Black Hitory Month. Well thanks for asking our thoughts...peace and infinite blessings.
Musiic

...getting head in the Untitled video, as was noted on this site a while back (and after watching the video, the idea of fellatio seemed pretty feasible to me...even though I did see him on MTV News talkin' 'bout how it was a "bare bones" approach to the visuals, which makes sense too...), I think the next single (which with every female on the planet sweatin' him, would DEFINITELY have to be chosen with a video concept in mind) should be "Feel Like Makin' Love", which he can perform from between a pair (or many pairs) of soft, supple, thick ass thighs... I think with the tone and subject matter (as well as musical complexity) of Voodoo, he needs to come with another really accessible love song for the masses who didn't faithfully cop his album the day it came out on their lunchbreak. That way he'll open the floodgates for something a little more...risque doesn't seem right...maybe more unconventional (in terms of radio friendliness) like (my joints) "Africa", "Spanish Joint", "The Line", or "The Root". I dunno, this is just my take...
Everybody go cop J-Zone's Music 4 Tu Madre... the new joint, "Hard to Swallow", coming in March (competition for Com)...(I'm taking a break from designing the Album Cover and promotional materials to write this...)
Peace...
"Standin' on the corner, holdin' my..."
-Greg Nice
"I like my hoes on X like Eminem"
-Jay-Z
"In the boundless panorama of the existing and visible universe, whatever shapes appear, whatever sounds vibrate, whatever radiances illuminate, or whatever consciousnesses cognize, all are the play or manifestation of the Tri-Kaya, the Principle of the Cause of all Causes, the Primordial Trinity. 14080, Next Single-Feel Like Makin' Love (is there a Lauryn Hill Duet out there!)
Posted by guest, Thu Feb-10-00 04:31 AM
I choose "Feel Like Makin' Love" because it's my belief that it's commercial enough for radio stations to pick up and it has broad audience appeal. My personal choice would be Africa or Send it On because of the message in the songs and the awesome arrangement of the music. This CD is a masterpiece, I get 'high' just listening to it. I'm going to purchase another Voodoo CD for safekeeping.
LadyT
14081, What's up with the duet?
Posted by guest, Thu Feb-10-00 05:40 AM
Yo, the CD is ridiculous but if you really wanted to blow the mainstream's mind, you release "feel like makin' love" but have Lauren Hill accompany you on it. You definately left room for the higher harmony on the song and I heard that she was supposed to sing it with you anyway. So if you want to hit em hard...that's what I'd do.

"Feel Like Makin' Love" is the strongest single as the word has come to mean these days. Beyond that, I think "Send It On" has a real shot given the success of "Untitled".
Peace,
Count Bass-D
www.countbassd.com

14084, I like "Africa" too, but...
Posted by guest, Thu Feb-10-00 07:32 AM
I see a lot of people are voting for "Africa", and I can't blame them. It's a great song, one of my favorites on the album (like all of them aren't), but I think that "Greatday..." or (and this is my first choice) "One Mo''Gin". That is, you're not opposed to putting a second slow jam on the radio right away... Just a thought (or a very serious suggestion, however you choose to take it...)
PEACE...

But if you want to test everybody, go with Devil's Pie. F@CK IT!! And personally again, IT'S ALL GOOD!!

I think "One Mo'gin" should be the next cut followed up by "Feel like Makin love". These two songs are the ish. I have a personal connect to "1 Mo'gin" and "The Root", so any of these three should be future singles. But "1 Mo'gin" has my vote.Dope Album D.
Peace

could possibly be any track on this album. If you're looking to bring in those who aren't familiar with "D'angelo" than I would say either "The Root" or "Chicken Grease". Personally I'd be happy to hear any of the tracks from Voodoo on the radio. They're all mesmorizing.
14092, Which song next you ask??
Posted by guest, Thu Feb-10-00 09:48 AM
While I think Spanish Joint is the best song I've heard in a long, long time I believe (commercially) Send it On or One Mo Gin would be most successful on the radio. The whole album is a complete masterpiece. Thank you so much.
14093, ..and the next single is...

...Feel like Makin Love...seems like the next logical choice..you figure he put out Left & Right, an up tempo fusion joint w/guest appearance, Now the tribute joint (Untitled) for the ladies to love, fellas to use to get the ladies moist, & it's radio friendly. So now you need the middle joint(s) that i think (i may be wrong) a remake & is very radio friendly...I personally think that they don't reengineer it & take some of the dirty kicks & snares out & add some programed drums, & fiddle around with it to make it radio friendly, cuz i feel that is is already, & it seems the most logical choice..I'm feelin the Root or Greatdayindamornin' to come out, but it may be too musical for those brainwashed radio listeners...Not to say that Feel Like...isn't, but it's a little more radio accessable(sp) & digestable for all ears...
"..my whole life has become a style, & I
wanna get into it." - Lonnie Rashid Lynn
"...good days, bad days, half-way days,..but I'm still lookin' for a greatdayindamornin'.."
- M.D.A.

In my all my experience with marketing(and thats what I do)I have found that the expected response is the one that gets the least counter-response. But seeing that D's marketing is the least of Cheeba/Virgins concerns (i.e 67 release dates and what not) I would have to say that either "Feel like making Love" or "Greatdayinthemonin" would be the best decision. Both are mid tempo songs that are at their best in the spring/summer time. Peeps are finally able to go outside without fear of frostbite and just the thougt of the sun being out instead of snow flurries makes everyone look to have a great day in the monin. On the other hand "Feel like makin love" appeals to those feelings that everyone gets when the weather starts to break. I think people underestimate the power of seasonal marketing. D'Angelo has proven that he can tap into the feelings of the masses with his music and his performances. When "Lady" dropped I can remember riding in my car, windows down, radio on 10 , with my girl and feelin the vibe that D' was spittin. Without a doubt that feelin will be recreated if either one of these cuts get dropped.
One.
"My people perish for lack of knowledge" -Jesus (nuff said)

hmmmm. .. . let me think.. . well, I really enjoyed Mo'Gin and Chicken Grease. Most of the songs remind me of home - sitting in the background while my brother's band would practice. They make you feel welcomed and relaxed - to sit down and eat that piece of watermelon...don't be shame. Seriously though, I didn't get to comment on the album (cd) initially but uh. .D' pretty much encapsulates the ear... .body.. . and your emotions with a sort of menage trois of voices all at the same time. There are many legendary voices intertwined with his own style - so you never lose sight of whose singing the song. .. it's almost eery but stimulating... I believe he would get his props/kudos from Marvin, Curtis, Prince, Al and many other legends. .. so he might as well pull up a chair to their table. . . this young legend already!
All is love. ..
Peace & Blessings~
Legal Tenda'

The line is the best song on the ablum BY FAR. i am not sure if it will be radio friendly, but much like brown sugar "is not about a woman" this song "is not about a gun". It seems to be the most personal song on the album and if you live and stand for anything, if you ever "put it on the line", then you feel this song.

later.

I would have to say that picking the next single off the album would be difficult to do. I'm feeling every track but I would have to agree with everybody 'Africa' is a very beauiful mellow song. I'm also vibing off 'Spanish Joint' and 'Send It On.' I guess its all about how you want to come at your fans.

I think that the next single should be "OneMo'Gin"
if you want to stick with the romantic vibe like "Untitled." But if you want to make a statement to those who don't know, the best way to get their attention is to present them with "Devil's Pie." The beat and the hook are perfect for radio play and when people have a song stuck in their heads they begin to realize what the song really means (whether it is garbage or if it has meaning). 14117, The Root is cool and i would perfer to hear Africa myself but the commerical song for the radio is one mor gin
Posted by natural, Fri Feb-11-00 11:24 AM
I myself love Africa first and then Root but we are talking about commerical radio. Not too many people who listen to the radio will understand what's is really goin on in these songs. However, One Mor Gin, everyone can relate to. Its emotional and moody for both sexes. Especially for the females. Males may see this as a way to get that girl back that he effed up with. Y'all feelin me? Anyway if it was up to me Africa would definitly be on there. It is a very spirtiual song that makes me think of the smells, the wonders, the warmth, the love, and strength of Africa......... Listen to the song and close your eyes and let the music guide you to this spirtual blistful place. Its beautiful. The Root actually runs down deep in my soul, urging me to get up, clap my hands and jam to this soulful dish of rhythms. So D keep makin that smooth chocolate music that melts in our intellect as well as our ears..
NaturalEssenceOfAfrica
A Supporter Not A Fan
Unfortunately, Natural's correct. The radio audience wouldn't appreciate "The Root" or "Africa" like they should. "One Mo'gin" has the best chance of really getting serious airplay because its easy to follow. It's a damn shame that people don't take the time to actually listen or even attempt to try to understand a song with any depth to it.
Peace

D'angelo
I think you should release Chicken Grease, Feel Like Makin Love, or I would say Africa or The Root or Send It On(which is my favorite) but they are kinda slow songs and would not get as much play. I love all of the songs, but radio listeners probably wouldnt be ready for songs like Africa or The Root. Chicken Grease is just a pure funk song and would probably be more pleasing to radio listeners. My mom heard Feel Like Makin Love and thought it was Al Green singing until I told her it's D'angelo.
Knowledge
I have an overwhelming biased regarding D'Angelo, his music and his sentiments. I believe that any song that he puts out will be well received because souls yearn for soothing and that is what his music does. His album is the theme song for my life right now as I change as person, a GOD send. I can listen to his music while I am working, in the bathtub, or while contemplating the jargon of Aristotle. His music is moving. So in my opinion, you should close his eyes point at a song, and do his thug thang.

Peace,
my first post ever, but I couldn't stand by and watch selfish people forget that this is still America, and general public folks need, a chance to wrap their mind around "Consciously Chocolate" subject matter. (I ain't exactly seen lil girls on TRL requesting "Untitled" lately (easily the most subversive 4 minutes of ebony this year, okay- maybe "Back that Azz Up")) Any song except "Feel Like..." would be a bad move, "Africa" or "The Root" are the bomb, but putting those out would be like Jordan buying the Wizards, (sure... you can drive a car with your feet; just don't do it.) Feeling the whole 9.5 weeks thing though Mr. Bastard, but I see someone more like Rosario Dawson(He Got Game, Kids) doing steam patrol.(What about a Cyber-romance sub-plot!) And can somebody please say PRIMO REMIX! (Maybe Tip or Com get a lil light, Amplified needs a lil help y'all.) Alright I'm out, but don't hate the player, hate the game, and play to win.
P.S.- Speaking of Primo remixes what the hell ever happened to AZ? The next single mos def has to be Feel Like Making Love. I love that song and right now is the perfect time to release it since winter's turning into spring. The next single should be either Send It On, The Root, or Spanish Joint. The Root is good for cruising around town and Spanish Joint is good for the summertime, cuz it makes you wanna get up and dance. Send It On, though would make a good summer jam too. has that old school flavor to it. Africa would make a great single too but I don't know if some people are ready for that one.....
Peace!
P.S. if you're gonna do a video for the next single, it oughta be DEVIL'S PIE. first off, people who watch mtv and bet need to hear those lyrics. plus, the track will have mad clout because premier produced it. and the song is about 7 minutes long, so you can do a serious music video with all that time.
the other songs people suggested are good songs, but not necessarily good singles. if you need any more advice d', let me know...
peace and positivity.
This would be a GREAT choice...but it would 'kinda' be a re-release. When the soundtrack to "Belly" came out, radio started playing this one. It was never actually released as a single for sale though. But know that i think about it, I think a re-release of this jam could work. I know Im always boppin' my head when the beat for "Devil's Pie" kicks in!

"Spanish Joint" for sure! For me it's the best choice following a slowjam like "Untitled". Spanish Joint has that instantly memorable groove. It's invigerating. An instant classic. I've played "Joint" to people who aren't familiar with your stuff and they've ALL freaked. I mean they LOVED it man. It's uptempo groovy and by the time it actually hits the streets it will be Springtime...and "Spanish Joint" is definitely THE BADDEST DRIVING SONG...just open the sun roof and CRANK it!
The CD is just what I've been waiting for, man. Amazing. Alive. Album of the Year(yeah, I know it's only February, but c'mon...)
Question. Who's opening for you in Richmond if anyone. Personally I think you and the Band should just jam the WHOLE time, with no opening band at all. Just groove for 2 or 3 or 4 hours!!
Se ya'll there!!

So many songs.... so many choices... so much genius on one album... how can one possibly choose....
One Mo' Gin is my choice. It's mellow, people can relate to the lyrics and its sexy...

Not to mention the fact that radio stations will play One Mo' Gin. I think they will also play Spanish Joint if you're thinking of releasing an upbeat cut. It's a shame we have to cater to the broadcast media, but what else can you do, other than make non-commercial, genius, sexy, innovative records like Voodoo?!?!?
Dayyuuumm, this record is hot! (just needed to say that)

Definitely one mo gin or feel like makin love
both have the same time of feel that would appeal to a lot of people, even though they're slow, both males and females would appreciate them.

14133, what's next
Posted by guest, Sat Feb-12-00 09:25 AM
I'm sure the radio stations will play "Left and Right" although, they should play "The Root" or "Send It On". Either way, I have the cd and will continue to listen to all of the songs with or without the radio.
Hey, thanks for including Houston on the tour.
Kysla (Kitty for short)

14134, D's next song

While your whole album is on like a pot, we think you should release "Chicken-grease" next. We saw you perform it on the Chris Rock Show, and it was all that!!!! We look forward to seeing your concert in Charlotte, NC and want to know when the tickets are going on sale.... As far as your latest video, "Untitlted....How does it feel", it's off the heezy fo' cheezy!!!!!!! When is the next video coming out?????????? HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! Much success with Voodoo!!!!!
we out one,
Kathi and Pam

I think the next single should "Send it On" cause it sounds bomb and becasue there needs to be more loving in the world. Are you in love D'Angelo? You can't be without me!!!!!!!!
14136, I am definitely feelin' Devil's Pie!!
Posted by Tam, Sat Feb-12-00 02:48 PM
That song is soo tight. It has a message kinda' similar to Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop(That Thing)", a swingin' beat, and mixin' and scracthin' for the regular hip-hop heads! I don't think it was released from Belly but if it was whatever. I say re-release it! Maybe you could re-mix it and add a rap to it. You'll probably need to shorten it but PLEASE keep the vamp("Uh..wait-a-minute, Uh.. let me tell you 'bout") at the end! That part and the next 20 seconds make the song for me! Hopefully radio stations like 97.5 here in Atlanta WON'T talk or start the next song OVER the vamp like they do w/ Untitled!
After that release my jam "One Mo' Gin"! I think that could have the affect of Lauryn's Ex-Factor. Most people can relate to that one person that you wouldn't mind "bumping" into again! I think either of those should be your next joint!
Much love D. I fall in love w/ Voodoo more and more each day! Can't wait to see you in the ATL.

it didn't get a lot of airplay and I don't think it was released as a single. Now that D's so H-O-T w/ the common folk, I think the song can make a huge dent. They re-release movies all the time so I don't think it's a stretch.
14139, how can anyone choose

i cant choose d'angelo baby...the entire album is HOT
14140, What Next?

Track #8. This track has enuf bass and is funky enuf to get airplay on the urban Hip-Hop stations, but it's also laid back enuf for the contemporary and oldie but goodie stations. You'll hit all markets with this one like you did with "Untitled".

The next release has to be the Spanish Joint.
I don't know if the man himself will ever read this, but D'Angelo, if you're out there:
Prince was my first love, since day one. But I'm writing to yoy, my first fan letter. If you ever need someone to sing your praises or write your liner notes - find me.
Nikki

PEACE.

...Coming from a D.J. in Japan, I have certain ideas on the next single, just to put out there (if it matters). The LP is timeless indeed, but I personally think "Chicken Grease" could be flipped into some ol' remix w/common type of vibe, if it's possible. I can't front, though. I would like to see "Africa" shine through, as well.
Honestly,i feel that whatever they decide, it shoud be an up-tempo joint, this time around.( springtime/springbreak type of vibe, ya know?)
Bring back the remixes and B-sides.
I know people don't remix too much anymore, but I do remember a day back when, I could count on a remix or two from Tribe, or De La, that just added that extra shit i've grown to crave in singles. I'm talking strictly in-house remixes, where it's either the artist, or surrounding fam, (soulquarians, ummah, ect.)in terms of music. Dig?
No outside "different shit" or "soul meets techno, or any other un-related form" remixes. Keep it rhythmatic ..and give a lil' x-tra on singles. Any dj you ask who spins hip-hop and R&b will agree that's appreciated.
peace.

PEEP:
roddyrod-www.beatbangerz.com
www.blacktokyo.com
RAMSQUAD-JAPAN

I'm gonna say what songs SHOULDN'T be singles and why:
(Before you read these keep in mind that I do LOVE the whole album; I'm just being objective...)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Devil's Pie - got it's 15 minutes of fame in Belly and besides that to the true D'Angelo supporters it's OLD.....(although that doesn't mean it isn't great...)
The Line - "Jonz In My Bonz" with more words....will bore real quick...radio won't play it
Chicken Grease - radio won't play it (remember who runs the radio stations and what their main motivation is....for those of you who don't know, the answers are: greedy calculating assholes / money....)
The Root - You'd have to edit part of Charlie's backwards guitar solo....that would make me go postal....
Spanish Joint - yeah....with Ricky Martin on the remix (lol)....RADIO AIN'T READY FOR THIS ONE!!!
Africa - (see: Chicken Grease)
NOW: WHAT SHOULD BE SINGLES AND WHY....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Playa Playa - Nice groove and catchy hook that radio will spin repeatedly...
Send It On/One Mo 'Gin - No video for these, but radio will eat them up....
Greatdayndamornin' - Good summer single (same level as Dreamin' Eyes)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall, I myself find it hard to pick a single because this album is so "jam-session" oriented, and I've never seen radio give these types of albums any love....but this is D'Angelo....(possible hope for change in radio?)
I'd really like to hear what ?uest has to say...

gB (T.O.K.P.A.K.A. tREBLEFREE)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of rich players are making wack-ass music, that's the bottom line! - Talib Kweli
WACK ENTERTAINMENT IS LIKE BAD PUSSY...PLENTIFUL AND CHEAP.... - a very angry but non-sexist cat known as gB
I listen with stylistic innocence as well as critical intelligence; I identify genres but ignore their limits... - Joshua Redman
Invest NO level of self into this system of PAGANomics... - BIG RUBE
I've been to enough sessions, and heard enough stories to back my claim that hip-hop is now following the road to "black music hell" (quality for dollars)... - ?uest
Killin fields need blood to graze the cash cow
It's a number game, but shit don't add up somehow
Like I got, 16 to 32 bars to rock it
but only 15% of profits, ever see my pockets... - Mos Def
I could give a fuck what you made in a year
NIGGA YOU WACK!!
A soft nigga on a hard track
In this new rap generation
I "X" cats like a muslim
He fell off 'cause I pushed him... - Common
For the artist who at his/her core just needs to be heard for the sake of his/her own sanity (and found some other way to feed his/her seeds): Staying underground is the only guarantee that he or she will be able to look in the mirror without feeling desperately ill. - Akiba Solomon ("Why Stay Underground", The Source Nov. 1999 Issue)
14147, FORGOT ABOUT "FEEL..."
Posted by guest, Mon Feb-14-00 06:46 AM
Feel Like Makin' Love - The obvious choice; would get radio play everywhere; I personally feel like it has too much "jam session" in it to be a single (even though I love it...)

gB (T.O.K.P.A.K.A.
1999 Issue)

ok d'angelo i had to listen to the cd one mo gain to figure out what i felt would get the most play on the radio. Here in Chicago they are already playin "Feel Like Makin Love", and I'm really feelin that! So, i think that this should be the next single, although I really liked the Africa track, I think that Feel like Makin love will really set things into orbit! By the way Can't wait to see you in concert!
14149, any song will do.

14150, Which song next? (D'Angelo)
Posted by guest, Mon Feb-14-00 10:30 AM
I think the next single should be "Greatdayindamornin" it's a good mid-tempo tune and won't scare dj's in markets that don't play as much black music as they do in New York.
My first choice would've been "The Line", but it's just a little to funky to make a lot of headway. Not that it ain't a bomb song; but the reality is that it's gotta be a song that aint' too slow and people will play. The radio version HAS GOT TO KEEP THE CODA AT THE END THOUGH, that rhythm change is off the chain!!
I'm writin from Seattle, and radio out here is as conservative as it gets.
"Left & Right" would've been a good choice too, were it not for the rap by Red & Meth. Maybe you could have COMMON do a rap w/out the cursing and the misogyny?
"Voodoo" is a breath of fresh air.
Support that real shit ya'll
14151, because i'm sure no one's reading

what is this???about post #175???well as I'm quite sure no one will be reading this it;s time for me to confess.
1-I eat butter.no not on toast or bread like everyone else.oh no,I eat it striaght, about half a pound a day, straight from the block.
2-sometimes when nobodies home I paint my whole body and run around the house naked screaming out war chants.but then again who doesn't?
3-I tell all my friends that I'm a playa but I'm not really.all I want is 1 really nice girlfriend.I'm not even out for sex.just someone to talk to and hold hands and the like.this may some kinda wussy but I don't care.I'm tired of always showing machoism's
4-I once had sex with my cousin.so sue me.I didn't know he.....uh I mean,SHE was my cousin at the time but now I do and I won't do it again.
5-a week ago last friday I went streaking.I just had to get all my agressions or something like taht out,so me and 3 friends went for a run down 75th street(a major road)with nothing but party hats on.and It was good fun too,I'd do it again in a second.my friends mom saw though but shes cool so she didn't really care(actually she got pictures)
6-I once wanted to buy a jacket because I thought I would look like a pimp but it was $50.so I went to value village and stole the jacket but everyone just laughed at me so I unstole it I guess you could say(I put it back)
.
.
.
.
on the off chance that someone is actually reading this none of that is true except for #'s 3 and 5.

While I'm lovin' most everything..."The Root" is the iiiisshhhh, but "Chicken Grease" is the most radio friendly, but f#*k all that, release track 8 "The Root"!
(track 9 is the ultimate for those of us who dance for real!, but that won't fly in rotation.)
I heard it on the radio, but was "Left to Right" actually released as a single?...

one mo'gin...ah, the one that got away...anyway, it's powerful, poetic, and talk about grrrooove! by the way, thank you for saving me from latter day hip-hip, and picking up the ball that prince seemed to drop right after the "symbol" album. you may, in fact, have nudged him into some sort of impending redemption.
many thanks, much love.

Although I have not read the preceeding messages, I have a sneaking sensation that I may be the only one with these songs in mind for your next drop.
I,Still Waters, believe that it should be "Send It On" or "Spanish Joint". Both of them have the ability to do something to my insides. And they both have distinguishing sounds.
Okay, I beg your pardon, I have made up my mind. It should be "Spanish Joint".....no,maybe, "Send It On." You're the artist. I'm just the receptor.

I'm one of the 12 (okay I'm exaggerating just a little) black people living in Iowa right now. I'm willing to go to St. Louis, Kansas City, Minneapolis or Chicago to see D'Angelo in concert. Who's got tickets?
