13548, COMMONS best line
Posted by truasana, Sat Oct-06-01 11:06 PM
I definitely posted on the common's wackest line thread. Cause, I mean, he's ill, but he can be wack like anyone else. But check it. Let's give some love and point out Com's best line. If we could, as well, give Black Thought some love here too. Cause I hear some peeps say he talks about the same shit in every track beacause he's not "counscious". I think beacause he's not tied to a title like that. he talks about a lot of shit. So give it here. But, I gotta go to bed. I'll post my fav's when I'm not gonna pass out. Peace, asana

i love that song g.o.d. but c-los shit was so much hotter than com's that it makes com's verse seem childish to me.

dont get me wrong, com is one of my favorites, but he says some lines sometimes that i am like "what the hell was he thinking?" in fact i think most of that song c-lo is preaching good vs evil being different than black vs white but i kind of think some of com's lines make white people look like the devil. again, maybe i misunderstood, or maybe it is my own personal theories on life being contradicted, but i just dont feel what he has to say in that song like i am feeling c-lo.

some of commons best verses are introspect for life "buying jeans and gold chains aint gonna make me a father etc etc etc" and that jawn on the soul in the hole soundtrack "worked so hard on my left that its hard to be right".

as far as thought...he has some bangers
"snatch ya from your cloud of cannibus you ignaramuses get laid on your back when i attack your glamourous life style"

just my 2 sense (haha)

what the hell is an "insection"?

the line goes "getting ate in sections". it's an oral sex reference and a Section 8 play on words.

"Observe the ugly mess which most men make of their sex lives-and observe the mess of contradictions which they hold as their moral philosophy. One proceeds from the other. Love is our response to our highest values-and can be nothing else. Let a man corrupt his values and his view of existence, let him profess that love is not self-enjoyment, but self denial, that virtue consists, not of pride, but of pity or pain or weakness or sacrifice, that the noblest love is born, not of admiration, but of charity, not in response to values, but in response to flaws-and he will have cut himself in two. His body will not obey him, it will not respond, it will make him impotent toward the woman he professes to love and draw him to the lowest type of whore he can find. His body will always follow the ultimate logic of his deepest convictions; if he believes that flaws are values, he has damned existence as evil and only the evil will attact him. He has damned himself and he will feel that depravity is all he is worth enjoying. He has equated virtue with pain and he will feel that his body has vicious desires of its own which his mind cannot conquer, that sex is sin, that true love is a pure emotion of spirit. And then he will wonder why lover brings him nothing but boredom, and sex-nothing but shame." -taken from 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand

When Com said that line, he was quoting an ignorant saying that conservative old black folks use and he subtly criticized that line of thinking with his next line "...not knowing that my color, was that of the original".

come on, you think Com associates negative actions with his skin color? LOL.

13582, Black Thought not concious?

I just want to comment on whoever thinks Black Thought isn't concious...where are you? And are you serious? Thought kicks some very insightful words on his tracks (which is why his words are always worth really listening to). He's far from your average emcee. Concious=aware, I always took my man Thought as a concious cat. This is not Jay-Z we're talking about here..you guys have go to be kidding me. What do you guys think?

And, you are now officially a clown.

Fuck, I even remember an episode of BET Tonight where certain Rashid "Common" Lynn referred to Jay as having some very conscious records.

If you aren't conscious, does that make you "unconscious". You've got to get up pretty early in the morning to be completely unconscious. Ja Rule manages to do it, and I think Nelly does too. But Jay is definitely conscious (Nas is too). Just because you're a "street" emcee or a "commercial" emcee does not mean you cannot also be a "conscious" emcee.

So U say being "street" isnt a commonality or otherwise known as being "conscious"?? Not really. I always have observed others to put "street" and "conscious" in the same subject and I sometimes agreed. I guess it actually all depends.

Anyway as for best quotes....well I always thought they were somewhere in:
"1999" - "some religion change over..angel over my shoulder tells me to remain sober"

or

Nag Champa (Afrodisiac for the World) - "Some say 'Rashid you changed', times are...my verse is depth like that of a baby takin its first step or the old woman that died and the nurse wept....A man does not live on bread alone, what good is a range when it's time to head home."

The "third eye" part is a spiritual reference. Depending on who you ask it has different meaning. To me it is mostly a representation of enlightment and how we dont only see with our physical eyes. We as human beings see through our soul and with emotion. Our eyes dont see the whole picture so our "third eye" (mostly depicted as an extra eye in the center of the forehead) acts as the true sight of what goes on around us.

Anyway, Common broke it down with the line.

- My third eye is like pink eye. Seeming contagious.

He was actually sayin that the way he sees things (through his third eye) is catching on. He has either brought some kind of change in the way his fans see the world or he has meet people who have similar views and he spreads them through his music. Thus the "seeming contagious" part at the end of the line.

Pink eye is an eye infection that spreads really, really easily. It's mostly dominant in little children because it's passed on through contact. I didnt have it until I was 18 and one of my younger sibs brought it home from daycare.

With me, I started at LWFC and then went back and found One Day and Resurrection (I worked for THAT one). Still haven't seen the first Common album anywhere down here.

And with Common only going gold, I didn't know that there was a Common bandwagon. (I wish there was. More folks would know of his subtle brilliance. I didn't see a bandwagon in Houston or Baton Rouge...I walked my way to Common's music on my own after hearing him on some other stuff. I love(d) 1 9 9 9 and wanted more of that in my earphones.)

Yeah I suppose my post came across as being a bit elitist, but it was just so funny to see how many people chose stuff from LWFC, when some of his most profound lyrics were either from earlier albums or cameos on other artists' songs. Everybody's entitled to their opinion, but suffice to say to really apprecaite Common, you have to get to know Common Sense i.e Can I Borrow A Dollar, Resurrection...

Yo, I've been listening to Common for a long time. I first heard of him on Unsigned Hype I believe when I used to read magazines. Then I copped "Resurrection" fell in love with H.E.R. and checked his earlier material, "Can I borrow A Dollar" and I have the version where it still says "Common Sense" on the cover and not just "Common" as they only have it these days. After listening to all of his albums, my heart still fails to deviate from Resurrection as being my favourite of the 4 albums that I own. I did post one of his best lines from LWFC, more specifically from the light (read above post from "babyswipes") but appropriately titled it "one of many".

I don't think it's fair to say that people are jumpin on bandwagons because they were ignorant of the fact that Common has put out other material. And so what if they are jumpin on bandwagons anyway, it just gives more people exposure to good music.

One of my favourite lines from Common by the way was from a freestyle he did at a show here in Vancouver. It was amazing and I wish I had a copy of it so I could listen to it over and over, but it was a live show and i guess an in the moment type of thing that I will forever remember.

Now, I know that my fav Com lines are from The Light, and from LWFC, but to be honest I got into Com back with One Day, and then just very recently picked up Resurrection. But you know what, I love it all, for real. I've deeply embraced Com more now than ever before because of his lyrics and where he represents. I moved from the big Illinois to Missouri, and the only thing Missouri can be proud of in hip hop is Nelly. Now, I don't have a big prob wit Nelly, but if that's all Hip Hop can offer Missouri, I'll move my ass back to Illinois or maybe out somwhere where there's real hip hop.
But uh, on to my fav Common pieces overall. Resurrection and I used to love H.E.R. are the best off Res... I've always loved the line "My 3rd eye's like pinkeye, seeming contagious" from Invocation. Oh uh, i got a halloween party to go to tonite, i'm a pimp wit a couple a ho's. I'm going to be like Com, "looking like a black panther that was trying to pimp" and my often repeated phrase will be "i don't care if it's snowing, i want you out there ho-ing. this a bizness right here, you ain't come too far to see that" I'm a guide them ho's, pimp vision and let them see the light. but its all in fun.

You have to realize that Common has matured alot over the years. Start at the Breaker one nine joint and go up to LWFC. If you listen you can hear him growing up.

"before we count our papers, count our blessings"

almost used it as my senior quote. simple but very meaningful.

I stagger in the gathering possessed by a patter-in
That be scatterin
Over the globe will my vocals be travellin
Unravellin my abdomen it's slime that's babblin
Grammatics that are masculine
I grab them in, verbally badgerin broads
I wish that Madelline, was back on Video LP
I went against all odds and got a even steven
Proceed to read and not believin everything I'm readin
But my brain was bleedin, needin feedin, and exercise
I didn't seek the best of buys, it's a lie to textualize
I analyze where I rest my eyes
And chastise the best of guys with punchlines
I'm Nestle when it's Crunch-time
For your mind like one time
If poetry was pussy I'd be sunshine
cause I deliver like the Sun-Times
Confined in once-mines on dumb rhymes I combine
I'm hype like I'm unsigned, my diet I unswine
Eatin beef sometimes I try to cut back on that shit
This rap shit is truly outta control
My style is too developed to be arrested
It's the freestyle, so now it's out on parole
They tried to hold my soul in a holding cell so I would sell
I bonded with a break and had enough to make bail
A misdemeanor fell on his knee for the jury
I asked No for his ID and the judge thought there was two of me
Motion for a recess to retest my fingerprints
They relinquished since, cause I was guilty in a sense

This Is the illest verse from common, but there are many others

That's one of my fav Com verses, the flow is simply unbelievable! But the next verse is ill too, listen:

I ride the rhythm like a Schwinn bike when in dim light
I use insight to enlight devices hit the skin tight
Words of wisdom wail from my windpipe
Imaginations in flight
I send light, like Ben's kite I've been bright
Get open like on gym nights
And in fights I send rights
Don't hook with skins my friends like
I spend nights up in dykes
In spite I've been indicted as a freak of all trades
I got it made
I bathe in basslines, rinse in riffs, dry in drums
Come from a tribe of bums
Hooked on negro and mums
Had to halt with the, malt liquor
Cause off the malt liquor I fought niggaz
Now my speech is lost quicker
Cruisin Southside streets with no heat and no sticker
U Ak got my back and we don't get no thicker
U Ak got my back and we don't get no thicker
U Ak got my back and we don't now check it
I'm a hoe but not a hoe nigga, ain't scared of no nigga
But it's my turn to go I gotta go
And I'm gone with the storm

If you've heard AL's Lyrics from Lyricists Lounge vol. 1, they say "I use Common Sense Ressurection" which is pretty obvious when you listen to it (heh).. That song is one of my favorites too but it can't compare to who they try to copy. It's a tribute to lyrics thou so no hard feelings :)

"Love your happiness don't begin wit a man. Strong woman why should you depend on a man. I understand you want a man that's resourceful. If he pay your bills then he feel like he bought you. Talkin to a friend about what love is. Her man didn't love her cuz he didn't love his. Hugged her from afar, said what I felt. You'll never find a man until you find yourself. I don't know if that's the exact line, I havn't peeped it in a few weeks, but any refrence to my man Craig Hodges is already ground for a classic line. Maybe that's why I still hold Common as my #1 MC, even as some of his newer joints don't have the same appeal they used to.
