13522, What makes Okayplayer Okayplayer?
Posted by Improv, Sun Dec-09-01 12:24 AM
Damn this downloading frenzy that has know taken over meeeeeeeeeee!

Anyway I'm going thorough these wonderful boards and I'm see a couple of folks ready to "tear this muthafukka up" (c) Ice Cube. It seems that the Roots broke a code/rule/mantra by doing the unplugged with J-Hova. He doesn't represent real hip-hop. OKAYPLAYER REPRESENT REAL HIP-HOP! *chuckle*

So are they right? Are only artists that rep REAL HIP-HOP allowed to be an Okayartist? Have this site made it from the basement to the penthouse and decided to drink Crissy till yall get pissy pissy? Have yall *gasp* sold out (and I don't mean shows either).

(I didn't know that D'Angelo, Jazzyfatnastees, Jag Wright, and Me'Shelle Ndee were REAL HIP-HOP)

13524, Fuck Real Hip Hop

[]its not about that at all.

what it is about is a family vibe.

-most of the artists here run in the same artistic circles, they run the black lily, they are a musical family, for dilated explanation check the lesson archives, last page post by k_orr

-that artistic family vibe carries over to the staff, how many websites do you go to where you could give all the names of the staff, and an amusing fact or three about each one.

-and all of that gets pushed onto the boards, b/c they and the artists post. it makes the posters(or at least it used too) feel a little more connected to each other than other message boards.

So now what happens if you add an artist who already has his own musical family?

It will just be odd, i mean i'm not saying its bullshit b/c Jigga wont post to the boards, i mean most artists dont anymore. But at least you can look at the artists and see like bonds between them.

If you add Jay as i said before, its like hanging out with your friends from that cousin from out of town. WIth you he feels out of place and is all quiet. Take him back home and he is perfectly at ease with his own friends doing his usual thing.

HOWEVER with the number of internet hip hop sites decreasing i think okayplayer does have a choice. It can move away from this family vibe/close knit thing and expand. Take on more artists from all walks of hip hop and become not only the home of Roots, D', Commmon and the Jazzies but ALL hip hop. I just dont see though how they could keep the vibe and go that level.

Okayplayer endorses an enlightened (open-minded but critical) approach to the appreciation of music, ignoring stereotypes of what is/isn't "real".

Maybe not.

I'm probably one of those people who you are referring to...but naw, I ain't mad at all. I simply stated my feeling that Jay-Z don't represent what I feel Okayplayer is about...or maybe what it was about? Just looking at it in terms that are different from how most people measure hip hop nowadays, that's all.

And I would never, ever stoop to using the word "real" to defend my arguments about hip hop, beliee dat nicka.

All I know is that I come to OKP to escape the Jay-Z wannabe's and Fabolous copycats that live on bet.com and other sites. I don't know if I can stomach them here. On the other hand I don't think they could hold their own againsts some of these OKP cats and will go running. You make the call.

Posted by Improv, Mon Dec-10-01 02:54 PM
Cuz I'm basically talking about artists

-...It Has Words
13533, A little bit of both...
Posted by cara_mel, Mon Dec-10-01 06:10 PM
You are right in that I was directing my comment more to the posters and not the artists when you were talking about the artists. Sorry. But in a way I think it still applies cuz one of the things that I like about OKP is the content that their artists brings which is reflected in the people that post here. Like many other people I think Jay-z has awesome lyrical skills but his content throws me everytime. I don't think to be an okayplayer you should have to be rhyming over a Roots instrumental or a Jay Dee or Hi-Tek beat. What I see in th okayartists are people trying to make good music without using every hip hop stereotype they can find. Maybe it's a stretch to want to see Jay-Z minus the ice and chrissy and stuff cause I guess that's who Jay is. But I think the artists define a lot of the vibe around here. Of course cause it's there fan site. I want every one to know about OKP too and I would love to see it win best fan site at My VH1 or something like that. But not thtis way. And I think a lot of things would change if Jay-Z became a player.

Is what effect Jay-Z's fanbase will have on the community (boards) on this site. Remember when D'angelo first joined??? General was always crazy but thats when it became the super-fast paced mess it is now. D'angelo had his own forum then they created OkayArtist which was a mess for a while too then eventually calmed down with all the fanatic bullshit. Thing is... the D'angelo fanbase online is still, for the most part, mature. The Jay-Z fanbase online is not going to be. If Jay had a home here, these boards would be overwhelmed with bullshit fanatic posts. And the bling bling crowd would come in a herd, and could actually scare away the vets. I know i wouldnt want to see it or waste my time arguing with them.

But if Jay is looking for ways to step into a more mature fanbase and slightly change his demographic... like Com did as he got older... then Okayplayer might be a good first step.

Can you give me links to where the staff actually said that he was? I must have missed it (sarcasm). Basically all of this started when BKyle was messing with an old photo of Jay and decided to put the Okayplayer logo on the blank black shirt. Just because the Roots played with him doesn't mean he's going to be an OkayArtist. If that's the case, I guess: Outkast, Nelly F, Moby, Living Colour, Roy Ayers, Joe Sample, and Bono are going to be the next artists...

Weak argument.
Jay-Z doesn't need to be an okayartist because he still gets press. How would be benefit from being on OKP with all the exposure he gets? D'angelo worked very closely with Soulquarians, hence that's why he's on OKP.

Not a weak argument in the context of your question... but since you add all these other eliments... What in SAM HELL did Dialeted have to do with the existing OkayArtists before them...
Actually dont answer that cause i dont give a shit... but keep it straight and narrow... i aint going all over the place wit you for no reason. Regardless of who you add to the roster here.... they're online fanbases will be interpolated into Okayplayer... you guys might wanna decide wheter thats healthy or not before making additions.

Ummm...I'm not staff. No (OK) by my name. In some way they are related to the Unplugged with the Roots playing backup. That's what I think. You have to ask Steve why he didn't delete them. Maybe he thinks they weren't that bad. *shrugs* Them not be deleted doesn't prove anything.

just what is the definition of Real Hip Hop?

What's real to me may not be real to Junebug on the other side of town.

It's really a question of "What can you relate to?"

Myself, I can relate to both Jay and the Roots. Lashawnna up the block may relate to Trick Daddy and Cash Money.

When it comes down to it, all hip hop is real (or fake depending on your point of perception). It's just a question of what you feel and appreciate.

What kind of constraints does OKplayer put on the artists they accept? I know that the record label has something to do with it. But if Elektra decided they wanted to pay to have Nate Dogg on Okayplayer would they site allow it? I know the label would not submit Nate because he does not fit in to the vibe of the rest of the artists, but I wonder if the OK peeps would stop them if they wanted to pony up the dough?
