1353, recap...
Posted by meechelle, Mon Nov-08-04 10:44 PM
first, for all those who have PM'd & emailed - there is NO file or message to share.

i was fortunate enough to hear about 3:30 via phone call (thank you again ;-)). still in a little shock.

i heard the tail of the first song, beat was really cool but it went by too fast - i didn't have my ears open yet.

the second song was un-fucking-believable. the beat was ridiculous, the keys were crazy, and i haven't heard any current artist play a funky ass guitar like that. i mean damn. then when the lyrics began, i got excited with whoever was whoopin' it up....couldn't hear the words but heard the melody. it was such a big, complex sound - i admittedly didn't know what to pay attention to (in addition to the others talking). but it sure was funky as hell, people aren't ready for this. definitely an evolution to a whole nother sound than whats around today. i was listening to Sly last night, and this fit in perfectly, but with more funkadelic. the guitar was what struck me the most.

im sure this isn't enough detail for some, so i apologize now. will add more if it comes to me....

Its "D"....?uest said before that D's new stuff was all guitar....and in this post he said that he has to focus on this "niggas album". They supposed to be working together on it. I just hope its sooner than later.

I don't even want to know when its coming, its been so long now I just tried to stop thinking about it.

?uest....how is it that Mos def got Shuggie on his album and "you" couldn't? Just curious?
1378, i never asked
Posted by qoolquest, Tue Nov-09-04 09:53 AM
well---we reached out to shug for electric circus.
but he is a brian wilson/Dsque reclse.
him and mos bonded at the botched beyonce tribute for the naacp awards
(MK wasnt having that son!) and i guess they parlayed it into a relationship.

1380, I See...
Posted by N1, Wed Nov-10-04 03:50 AM
Well...I felt like it was a waste on that Mos album (him being on there)....I know Shuggie is Blues...that's his thing, but people want that Inspiration Information steez. It just didn't come off the way I thought it could...or would.

I don't know how you wanted to use him, but I trust you'd be leaning towards the Inspiration Info side.

Speaking of Shuggie....did anyone ever hear "Oxford Gray"? OH MY....that is his hottest joint!!! Search for that!!!! Love that!!

I say this all the time and I'm going to keep saying it until its done... D' needs to cover Super Women...Stevie....I know he has a direction for this album, but in concert or something!

That's My Time!

Randomly at Borders I found both of Shuggie's first two albums on a 2-for-1 CD. Stuff is great.

Reading this thread made me realize (again) that D is the only modern artist that mooooooooooves me. My heart literally beat faster as I read this, I felt elated. Damn I am psyched, even if I have to wait another couple of years.

".. is our homage to (the ''controversy'' era) prince. (not the artist). "

huh? "not the artist" prince?
will somebody explain this to me?
1392, in 93/94 prince changed his name-
Posted by betelgeuse, Mon Nov-15-04 09:05 PM
to an unpronouncable symbol. the fact that the symbol could not
be pronounced led people to just call him "the artist". "the artist"
arguably couldn't bring musically what prince had given us in
the 80's (and even early 90's).

"untitled" is an ode to early 80's prince and not to "the artist"
(which represents prince from 94 up to 00).

if "untitled" video is what got him over on the idiot side of things
he is gonna have to get his physical game back and come with some

a good album very underrated
1403, what's your input production wise?

>but shit i know the marketplace aint even ready for.

first off, thanks for that info, quest. you're the man!

secondly, are you contributing the same as on the "voodoo"
project? and is this project still entitled "james river"?

(EDIT: hell, since you might actually be answering some more
questions--are the other soulquarians (james poyser, dilla)
present on the record? how about the soultronics (pino, spanky,
roy, etc.)? other guests you can speak of? fuck, i got so much
to ask, but i'm not even sure you want to answer 'm..
last one, with "voodoo" d started to move into a certain
direction. he said he had a vision. he said he was searching for
this certain sound, a certain concept. is he further moving in
that direction or has his vision/direction changed completely?
it's safe to say we should expect the unexpected?)

you better make sure d don't fall in the same trap as a few
years back with that whole image thing (refering to that
interview you did for "the believer" mag).

Was that a mistake, or are you trying to say that we gots to REALLY understand the out-there cerebrally-funky sonic assault that is On the Corner to get this album?

And that Tony Williams Lifetime "Emergency" is killing, most people just don't even know (please tell me this new D will be better produced though ;-)

i don't really know what to expect musically of course, but reading quest's post just made me hope for some psychedelic imagery to accompany the new album/music. last week i saw the beatles' "strawberry fields forever" video again. that's some raw, psychedelic imagery right there.

he should do something like that.

I think I'm about to cry !!!! The waiting for this, could prove to be too much for me. But, I will sit patiently and do so. Oh yeah, newbies take his advice. It's like Purple Rain/Around The World In A Day for me again(no comparing here, just noting the change being taken by another musical great("D") into something monsterous). Is there a title for this project yet ? By the way, keep the 7 to 9 min. tracks, that will truly set this album apart from others coming out. Man, this is good news !!!!

Don't cut the tracks, leave them as they are. It's been a long time since an album had tracks that long. Damn, got my body shaking like a fiend for this shit. Bring it on, nigga, bring it on, ohwooooh bring it on, yeah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i ain't trying to start no beef up in here, and let me be the first to say how much I respect ?uestlove as a producer, a historian and a drummer ...

BUT if the shit is already as sick as he's talking, then I wouldn't go changing the drumming on it (responding to the "me, me, me!" post). In some ways the signature ?uestlove sound (rimshot-clap-snap) that we got on Voodoo -- while once a breath of fresh air -- is now kinda played out. At the time, it was "next movement" (and believe me, I often long for the glory days of when I felt that we were on the verge of a musical revolution in '99-'00), but now its old. From the sounds of it, these tracks need something more raw.

but .. this is just me contributing to the incessant spilling of opinions on this site from behind a computer. It's gonna be what its gonna be, and any way you slice it, it'll be hot.
1420, i understood quest did the drumming-
Posted by betelgeuse, Tue Nov-16-04 10:43 PM
i could be wrong though.

back in february quest said he and d had put aside their issues.
quest mentioned d's demos were all guitar/bass/no keys/no drums.
quest's task would be to lay down the drums. i guess he's come
through.

and i'm sure they've spiced up the drumming since "voodoo"--both
know those "voodoo" drums have been "played out". and when you
look at the list of influences, you know we won't be getting
another "voodoo".

Reality check: according to the 2000 census, there were more than 31,000 black
physicians and surgeons, 33,000 black lawyers and 5,000 black dentists.
Guess how many black athletes are playing professional basketball, football
and baseball combined. About 1,400. In fact, there are more board-certified
black cardiologists than there are black professional basketball players.

im sorry, if i might blow the whole feeling around this board....and taking a backward step...but......

i want R and B
i want Soul

i want D'angelo breathing life into these genres again, bcause they desperately need some life.

i just want dook to sing.

right now it's sounding pretentious, "genius"...lets not throw that word around.

me personally i think he's the greatest R and B artist of our time. but that's it....i dont know his guitar skills, but i dont think he's at that status to be fully wielding it like that... (ie: electric ladyland, by jimi, which was mentioned above)

man, R and B, i know there are influences, but why do i think this thing is shaping up to be a funk album. (and yes i know the two are directly related.)

oh yeah, i have full faith on quest and d's "geniousity"...but im scared that they may have forgotten the R and B.

with favorite artists foray into other genre's coming up kinda weak (ie: mos def) and other favortie artists just coming up weak (ie:talib kweli) ...i just dont wanna be disappointed..

i know it sounds all sad and stuff, but i love me some good music man.
