12792, about Nas...
Posted by BKyle, Mon Feb-04-02 02:54 PM
Post nothing else about him or his comments in our house.

We've all been okayplayers long enough to we keep our doors closed to keep roaches and rats out.

F*ck what he says, f*uck what he does.

He talks about MY CREW being a contradiction, but HE's the one talking of shooting and causing bodily harm to his brotheren, BUT HE'S GOT "GOD'S SON" tatt'ed on his belly. What?... F*ck you.

Are you a "PROPHET" or out for "PROFIT". Don't make 'Q.B.' stand for "Quit Bitchin". Prolly already does.

Just ME talkin, and in THAT, I act alone.

Peace Y'all,

It is such a shame to hear this foolishness Nas said at Hot 97. I have had nothing but respect for the brotha because I assumed that he was open minded to the various branches of the tree of Hip Hop. Unfortunatley, I had the oppurtunity to meet this cat this past Saturday night at Maroon's in Manhattan where he was there with who appeared to be his bodyguard and his 15 year old night cap. I simply gave him some dap and props on his latest bid with stillmatic and kept shit movin'.

I don't think this "QB has-been" understands the talent and verasity The Roots expound upon the Hip Hop culture. I also don't think this cat understands the lyrical beating he would recieve if Thought decided to respond to this regrettable excuse of a Hip Hop artist. Although Nas' talent superceeds many who have attempted to challenge him, he has yet to charter territory that is within a completley different realm that is seperate from the bling bling mentality, bullshit thug ideology and washed up MC's, which is where this fool currently resides in.

Nas, you fucked up. And you disappoint me.

well said. i just thought i'd try to lighten the mood a little. personally, i don't care what nas says about the roots crew on hot 97. i only care what nas puts on his albums and singles. likewise, the roots crew's response to this (if there's one at all) will in no way affect my feelings about phrenology as a record or the roots as artists. beef is beef, it's really not that important. nobody's gonna get shot over this.

Idiot. He has nothing to gain by sh!tting on these n!ggas. Aint nobody except for you die hard dickriders are checking for The Roots. If anything the Roots might sell an extra few hundred records..Especially after they were on Jiggas dick and now that as said their name. You dickriders should be jumping for joy.

I figure it's probably not worth my time arguing with someone like you, but I want to comment on a few things. First, you don't sell 800,000 records when "nobody is checking for you". Second, calling people dickriders because they are fans is ridiculous. And third, how are the Roots on Jay's dick just by backing him up?

BKYLE FOR PRESIDENT!

Dammitt!! I agree with you 100%.

I also agree with airbreed:

>he has yet to charter territory that is
>within a completley different realm
>that is seperate from the bling bling
>mentality, bullshit thug ideology and
>washed up MC's, which is where this
>fool currently resides in.

I have had COUNTLESS arguments with these young, dumb, fulla cum niggas talkin' about how dope Nas & Jay-Z are and who do I think is gonna win.

My response to that is and will ALWAYS be:

IT'S COOL FOR THEM HAVE THEY BATTLE AND ALL -- THE SHIT IS CUTE. BUT UNTIL REAL EMCEES LIKE BLACK THOUGHT, RAS KASS & PHAROAHE MONCH CAN GET THE SAME CREDIT AS THEM HALF TALENT CLOWNS, FUCK BOTH OF THEM!!

THE WAY I SEE IT, THERE'S TWO MAIN REASONS THE SHIT AIN'T GOIN' DOWN LIKE THAT:

1.) RECORD COMPANIES IS TOO FUCKIN' GREEDY TO LET THE REAL TALENT GET ANY PLAY.

2.) SIMPLE AND PLAIN, "ASK NAS -- HE DON'T WANT IT WITH THOUGHT --NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" THOUGHT IS TOO FUCKIN' SMART TO STOOP TO THIS SHIT.

I'll be the first to admit I had issues about this unplugged shit at first, but to be honest, as long as this ain't gon' change the group I've known, whose music I've loved and brag on so much niggas think it's mine; as long as The Roots STILL gon' be The Roots and they continue to bring the great quality they've been doin' since 1994 (for me...DYWM was the beginning), I don't give a fuck who they collab with.

And while I'm at it, if Nas called them out for "Bamboozled", that shows just how dumb HE is. IT WAS A FUCKIN' MOVIE!! Them being in that movie made a statement. And now that I look back on it, I also thought it was fucked up how this cat is tryin' to SCHOOL this "shorty" while smokin' weed with him!

>What?... F*ck you.

>Are you a "PROPHET" or out
>for "PROFIT". Don't make 'Q.B.'
>stand for "Quit Bitchin". Prolly
>already does.

...kind of defeats the purpose of the whole "don't post about him anymore," doesn't it. A few more replies, we can get a "View All" and let in all the rats and roaches.

Just admit it -- you wanted to lash out at him as much as everyone else on the board, if not more. So, fine...it's healthy and funny and that's how hiphop beef works.

Don't pretend OKP is going to be all "above" his insults and then come back with "He talks about MY CREW...but HE..." etc. etc. etc.

If you're going to be above it, be above it.

He can't really make music any more, so his opinion only matters when we let it.

Yeah,

It's obvious that you're the sensative muthafucker who can't seem to let shit lie once a cat makes his comment. I think some of us feel a little offended by Nas' remarks because some of us were in his corner after the Takeover jumped off. This is why some of us feel a little betrayed after Nas' bullshit comment.

Nas is looking for a quick fix to jump start a career that blinked the fuck out after Illmatic. He's lucky Jigga much less even afforded him the oppurtunity to return to his Nasty Nas days with Either. But now it seems that his ego got the best of him and now he wants to bring it to a crew that will surely put his washed up QB ass to the pasture.

Therefore in retrospect, fuck Nas and fuck your bullshit contradictions cause your life must be pretty fuckin' boring and pointless for you to sit up here and worry about the next man's two cents.

Cocksucker.

12823, RE: about Nas...
Posted by YourUserName, Mon Feb-04-02 10:37 PM
Umm, alot of you are acting really suspect about this.

I'll address some of the ridculous ideas floating around in this thread, because there's alot.

1. Yes, some of the things that Nas said were downright ridiculous.

2. Someone said that Nas's career has been over since "Illmatic." The man has sold 2 mill with "It Was Written", and "I Am..", around 1.3 with "Nastradamus", and "Stillmatic" is in the Billboard's top 20, and has been there since it's release. As a matter of fact, "Illmatic" JUST went platinum last YEAR! He's not going anywhere.

3. To the people that said that Nas can take this as a diss, congratulations..you are among the reasonable ones. It's not whether or not The Roots MEANT this as a diss, but it's how it can be construed. Alot of the best battles in hip-hop history have come off of misunderstandings. The Roots may not have INTENDED to make it come off as a diss, but it sure as hell looks like it. So, they know the rules of the game.

4. Nas isn't a "real" emcee? That's gotdamn retarted. The man is arguably the most rounded and gifted rapper in hip-hop today, INCLUDING Black Thought. Besides, he exhibited he can can make disses with the best of them, (Ether)

5. I get the impression that some of you actually think that Nas and Black Thought are gonna meet up on stage and battle this out. If this is the case, then I can gurantee that you all have a better shot of George Dubya doing the wop during the next State of the Union Address. This will probably be a studio "battle", because rappers rarely freestyle battles anymore. And give examples of how Thought's lyrical supremacy would "rip Nas a new asshole," meaning type some text or cite some songs. A good diss/battle song isnt about exasperating words or flows, it's about EMBARRASING your opponent..the systematic demise of your opponent.

6. Dice Raw?? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! That was funny....

7. I have all of The Root's albums, as well as Nas's. Now, I want you all to objectively take a step back, and listen to the lyrical content of both Thought and Nas. Who do you all REALLY think is the better overall emcee? Come on, you all can tell the truth...Quest aint gonna be mad, are ya Quest? Sheeit, even HE said that "Nas is god"

8. Why can't you all be fans of both? I like Jay, Nas, AND The Roots, and that's not gonna change. It's kinda ho-like to call for fans to not like Nas anymore just because he says something about The Roots. As a matter of fact, it's bordering on groupieism! What part of the game is THIS??

9. How is "Ether" wack?

I'll indulge you....

>1. Yes, some of the things

true, we sall agree. Nas steped outta pocket

i think people refer to his "career being over" as his street cred. notice how with every succedding album, his street cred has dropped a little more every album. and granted i thought nas was/is one of the greatest...but

>3. To the people that said
>that Nas can take this

personally i saw this coming when quest said they were working together, before it even came on tv. anyone that knows the roots or has seen them live knows that htey flip beats during a set. this was the perfect chance to show what they do eveyr night on stage. hell when they did concerto of a desperato, they flipped the street dreams beat...its tradition to flip nas/primo beats. the only difference was it was in the middle of a battle, and they alied themselves....

>4. Nas isn't a "real" emcee?

nas s a real emcee, but not a true battle emcee--before you scream ether, ask yourself. how? many battle ryhmes has mr jones written before this whole jay-z thing. other than small shots at mega, and innuendos at jay, what else....

>5. I get the impression that

listen to ALL of thoughts verses. clones for instance. listen AGAIN to the lyrics, would you want to be on the receiving end of that verse. 100% Dundee, Adreniline, Concerto of a Desperato...the list goes on

?uest gave nas props, but he also said nas sold his soul for dollars (check his review of i am). now i heard all of nas's product, 'cept stillmatic. nas is ill, he can weave beatiful street tapistries, but battle. BATTLE....nigga pleeeaaase (c) sho-nuff

as far as creativity, no one has touched dywm?!!!?!?!...bagpipes?! yup bagpipes?!!!

>8. Why can't you all be

yeah happy for you, my illmatic is next to my resonable doubt, and in my lifetime. (i keep a special page for the roots though). i supported nas in the battle until i heard all of takeover. i was backing him when he did the original stillmatic, than i heard takeover and well.....it was true

>9. How is "Ether" wack?

ether is wack because took ONE verse to dismantle his ENTIRE CAREER. nas truned around and made THREE verses about Jay being gay and ugly?!! how does that add up. Takeover was better because it echoed what the streets have been saying for YEARS (remember the street cred thing). it didnt matter that it was jay saying it, though he made it witty as hell, somebody finally called nas on his bullshit. nas had been living on his lorrals for years behind illmatic, and somebody took him down.

ether WAS wack because when jay came with facts:

-you havent had a good (quality, sales dont mean shit) album in years

-oochie wally was your last song...shmea?!

nas came with emotions and kiddy shit:

-you're gay

-get off bigs dick

it just didnt add up. folks wanted nas to win 'casue the track was cool, and the vibe was mean, but when you strip it down...the disses held no weight.

Now the problem is, what will 'riq say in response. jay has already called him out on his career, and to follow siut would be wack. To follow with hyperbolic, "smack you with my microphone" type lyrics won't sway anyone but underground "true-hip-hop" fans. so what to do, what to do...

the only thing he can do. cal him on his contradictions and show the world hes a bigger hypocrit than KRS-ONE

aight thats enough i got work to do

that is all,

couldn't have said it better jay gave nas the attention and now nas has a big head over it all dywm cant be touched by many albums and roots got so much overall better songs than nas will ever have. I love the first second and stillmatic but he hasn't touched illmatic and never will.

nas is a dope emcee no lie but i haven't heard some super impressive disses especially compared to the songs on illadelph think about the battle verses on there....

i liked ether and now that i think about it mainly the get off bigs dick, youre ugly and you bit my style and etc is all that stands out, thats good for a few laughs but the beat never compares to the doors 5-1 sample in takeover

Umm, I asked who do you think is the better OVERALL emcee when I made this point. And I'm not talking about who is the better musical entity as a WHOLE. I'm asking who's better overall, Thought or Nas? I'll take Nas 100% of the time.

Well, by your logic, Takeover is wack....because he dissed jay good in only a COUPLE OF BARS on 'Stillmatic' and it take Jay an ENTIER VERSE to do it. See how that makes no sense?

>

WHAT??! Either you weren't listening or you weren't listening. First of all, to say that all Jay came with are "facts" is ludicrous. The man tried to pass off OPINION as fact. That shit aint cool. I know people that think that "It Was Written" was better than "Illmatic", and that's their opinion. I also know people (including myself) that loved "I Am." It's stupid to expect Nas to make an "Illmatic" everytime he comes out, especially since the man has done so much AFTER that album, as far as concepts and great songs. By the way, I don't think Mr. Carter wants to stack albums up, song-by-song for quality. He'll look more like the idiot if he does that. Also, "to your bodyguard's verse being better than yours" is NOT FACT. In fact, that line should get the bitter beer face/gasface.

And Nas came with emotions? Guh? Like I said, you weren't listening. He said MUCH more than what you typed.

This is why "Ether" is a superior diss...

-Nas makes Jay-Z out to be an obsessed fan. It's no secret the man is a big Nas fan, so nas addressed him by calling him a "stan". He also said that he changed his style after hearing "Illmatic." This remains to be seen.

-He talks about how Jay has "been" on Biggie's dick. Say what you will, there's no denying that Biggie's lyrics have shown up in Jay's a NUMBER of times.

-He makes Jay come off as the student, while nas was the teacher. So, that's a herbing in itself.

-He lets people know that there was a time when he wasn't always this smooth guy that moved "keys". He was once an snot-nosed kid that used to get punked.
>
-He mentions how there's already an album called Blueprint (which is FACT).

-One of the BEST things he's did...was turn shrink on Jay..."You seemed to preoccupied with dissing women/were you abused as a child/scared to smile/they called you ugly?"...BTW, Jay HAS touched upon this in a song or two ("Song Cry"). He actually called Jay out on his misogynistic ways, by pointing out his insecurities...BRILLIANT!!!!

-Then he turns around the next bar and tells him to love him as a brother (hug me don't disrespect me). He lets Jay-Z know that after all of this, you're still my brother, and I love you man. kill with kindness, which is strapped to a bomb.

-He also did it in a vicious, and witty way....by mocking him in the chorus, and changing the words to the Takeover chorus near the end of the song. By calling Jay ugly all the times that he did it, actually drove Jay's insecurities home more. This was to get under his skin.

I love both songs, but don't get it twisted when you talk about Ether slim.

BTW, who cares if a diss is 100% fact? Look at Kool Moe Dee vs. LL, Krs vs. everydamnbody. Fact is only ONE factor in determining a great diss song.

12828, when its all said and done...i just didnt like ether
Posted by Iltigo, Tue Feb-05-02 11:41 AM
yeah, thats it, i just didnt like ether.

takeover (to me) was a better song.

now as far as nas's post illmatic work. i give him credit. each album has been good in its own right, just not as good as illmatic.

when i say street cred, im talking about the anticipation of a new release. after "you owe me" and "oochie wally", i just couldn't support him anymore. i mean i even like (somewhat) nastradamus (the single, mainly for the jbs sample)

and your point about jay being obsessed with him....he made it seem that way, along with the hip-hop media. but it was nas that was taking shots at the crown long before jay had to defend it. mix-tape chronolgy goes back to nas spitting first. jay defended himself, but becasue he was/is (whatever) on top he came off as the big bad bully.

(damn i should have replyed with quotes)

yes a battle ryhme is a ryhme about: how dope i am, how dope my crew is, and most importantly, how WACK you are. this is what thought does. thought can tell a story (episodes, any female joints) he can rock a party (see them live), he can tell you how wack you are (clones, most of illedelph and TFA), and...and hes just a dope emcee.

we will agree to disagree on many points. i'm taking thought in a straight battle no prob. nas might win the pop vote, cause hes hot right now and thought is an unknown....

oh yeah as far nas being king (you didn't even mention it, but i thought it appropriate) he can't be after one song. nas needs a string of bangas to truley take the crown. now he has three, and an album....not enough

that is all,

i'm not defending nas
i'm not defending the roots
but shit kyle. you just fucked up right there. you missed the whole damn point. or are your cheap shots the only way you can respond to such a topic?
nas rightly called the roots out as contradicting themselves through their work. all along they've been talking all this underground stuff on how they ain't going anywhere, changing their image, resorting to pathetic measures to gain exposure, and look who they make a live joint with- one of the most mainstream rappers (if i can 'even' call him that) around. Now come on.
Nas has a point. Now instead of taking cheap, pointless shots at nas' character, at least admire his pursuit of consistency within subject matter, mindset and beliefs. Face it. the roots sold out with their unplugged joint and nas called em' out. Easy as that.
As far as your bitch ass comments are concerned, you can take your nazi okayplayer ass back to wherever the fuck it came from cos son, i think you are becoming a little overplayed with this whole 'don't post here' 'don't post there' shit. Who died and made you president?
the original post pertained to nas' comments about the roots. or are the roots not okayplayers anymore?
or just maybe your ass is a little upset cos your boys aren't getting enough word of mouth on this site and this cat named nas is stealing the limelight....?

quite simply; nas rooted out the roots (excuse the pun) for jumping for the money and you're scared that he has hit the nail right on the head. Don't think that by attacking his character this will all go away cos you haven't fooled me. it you can't deal with the truth, just shut up and deal instead of creating posts simply to belittle nas and feed your ego.

first, and far most,Everybody who got hate in there blood, always got some stupid ass remark to say about the roots, meanwhile, you know you listen to they sh** jus as you listen to diffrent sh** like lenny kravitz, to jay-z, , to three 6 mafia even! and they're total garbage, but due to the constant garbage thrown at us thru mainstream radio, and media for that maater, we have no choice but to hear them out, ! and some of y'all secretly know you like some of jay sh** jus as the roots sh**! so why all of the sudden a hip hop band you does various type of sh** plus stay innovative in they're art work, why all of the sudden they're this poster group for positivty? and underground hip hop?

i dont know if you notice but if any of y'all hatin ass decided to go to any of they're show's you'll see that they are anything but underground! (i've never seen an underground group get AS MUCH LOVE FROM THE WORLD AS THEY HAVE!) plus tour the world, and help people carreers, as the okayplayers, (soulquarians, ect.) so whut im tryin to say is that how the fuck..at this point in there careers "underground"?

why should they have to stay underground , and not prosper the fruit of they're creative work, and not expand there horizions, I mean god damn, they've been sellin, under platnum for years! while helpin other careers and raising the bar for real talent and art( as far as production , shows, ect,)

now nas decides to play himself and call the roots out! that means he's right ? by sayin they contradicting themselves, i mean , whut,, he's not? look at his career! he started w/ illmatic and even though it was a "classic" he switched up his shit, from bein a ill lyrisist, to a commercial ass (wearin pink suits, tryin to be a mafia type gangster!) All you have to do is listen to the decline, of the last albums from "it was written,to nastradamus"! it's obvious he traded in skills to reach a "commercial" filled audiance who dont care bout lyrics, jus catchy hooks, and a bullsh** dance beat!

so, now the roots decided to work w/ a commercial type cat, does that mean, they traded in skills for commercialism? well you have to wait and see for "phrenology!" until, then they still stayed consistant w/ they sh** ! so whut they expanded and work w/ other artist like jay z! aint nobody sayin sh** when they work w/ or cover songs for other artist like dead prez!,slum vill, talib, common, ect! but i guess you tryin to say that its ok, because they're not commercial! - well is that it? they not commercial or concious? cause they all hot and have hot singles in they own right, but the roots never claimed to be "positive" jus talented creative musicians! . yeah it's obvious that they're able to do concious minded songs, but they (black thought) is able to rip lyricall sh** some times better then the average!and can aslo spit some of the negative verses you've heard! so why do we equate concioous w/ the roots,a nd soon as they step outside your box, of small minded ignorance! they all of the sudden become "hypocrites!" mabey you should look deep inside yourself, and stop tryin to fit others in your small minded categories!

oh and check your man nas, also about the term "hypocrites!" you homothug!(and his verse on oochie wally was garbage! how he gonna let his body guard rip him?) both of ya'll need to stop cryin, get over it and change your diapers ,faggots! "STOP CRY MAN!"

matters, but:

Post nothing else about him or his comments in our house.
We've all been okayplayers long enough to we keep our doors closed to keep roaches and rats out.

--a bit close minded on your part don't you think??? because the man calls something he sees in a different way than the way you see it, it's all or nothing?

He talks about MY CREW being a contradiction, but HE's the one talking of shooting and causing bodily harm to his brotheren, BUT HE'S GOT "GOD'S SON" tatt'ed on his belly. What?... F*ck you.

--Nas really wasn't FAR off in this sense. The Roots perfoming with Jay-Z is at least more of contradiction that Nas will ever be. I mean, let's be honest...the Roots have been more or less outspoken against all the jiggy/iced-out/thug-playa for the better part of their careers. Then, to collab with the reigning king of the jiggy/iced-out trend...I mean, I like Jay so it's not a knock on him but basically you've just gone against what you stand for because you're helping him sell albums that promote the lifestyle you've spoken-out against (and in true "scratch-my-back/scratch-your-back" fashion the Roots will probably sell more albums). As for Nas, he's always been kicking a bit of knowledge on one track, and then talking about killin/money/girls on the next. He's really not contradicting shit cuz he's been like that...no one was screaming contradiction on Illmatic, nah mean?

Are you a "PROPHET" or out for "PROFIT". Don't make 'Q.B.' stand for "Quit Bitchin". Prolly already does.

--If you're not in the music BUSINESS for the business, then it's just a fucking hobby, so this point is moot. The Roots want money just like Nas. Shit I want money like my manager at my job. You need money...face it.

Just ME talkin, and in THAT, I act alone.

-- My thoughts exactly.

Peace.

how is he a dickriding faggot exactly? oh becasue hes on the legendary roots payroll (which hes not) or because he is defneding his friends.

if youve been around here long enough you should knwo that this site is like a family. a fucked up, arguing, disfucntional family, but a family nontheless. the common thread is a love for the roots, and good music (NO MATTER WHO ITS BY)

just because someone jumps to the defence of a freind that makes them a dick rider?! one could make the same argument for you, playing hype man, to mr. jones' statements.

"yeah nas, fuck dem conscious faggots-ass faggot b!tches!! **slurp** man your dick feels good i my mouth!"

ok playa,

that is all,

I don't know about that... granted I'm not trying to post... but if we have all learned something about the Pac/ Biggie incident, the one thing we should have learned is to not fight fire with fire... if you truly feel this NEO Soul movement (god I hate that title) is suppossed to enlighten the masses through art, then why react like that? The more they hate, the more you show love... it's really that simple. Nas is a rational man, if anything... the ROOTS SHOULD DO A LIVE ALBUM WITH NAS AT THE HELM... THAT WOULD SETTLE EVERYTHING RIGHT THERE WOUDLN'T IT?
CAUSE NOT ONLY WOULD YOU BE WITNESSING A BATTLE BETWEEN TWO GREAT MC'S (WELL...ONE REALLY) YOU WOULD HAVE SUPPORT BY THE GREATEST LIVE HIPHOP BAND AROUND FOR BOTH MEETINGS... saying F@#$# Nas... isn't the way... too Pacish...

I was thinkin that if Nas (or any MC) had the opportunity to do Unplugged or a similar format, AND they had the opportunity to enlist the services of The Roots, they would be CRAZY not to do it. Jay-Z just beat 'em to the punch.

But Nas (and I ain't a Nas-hater) has zero stage presence, so a Nas Unplugged ain't likely to happen (unless he been at home in the mirror practicing).

I'll roll w/BKyle on this any day.

Maybe Jay said it best, "Had a spark when you started but now you're just gaaaarbage."

Will I ever deny "Illmatic"? No. Will I front like I haven't bought the first 4 Nas albums? No. Do I still own "Nastradamus"? Hell no. Have I listened to anything other than "Illmatic" since '99? No. Do I think Nas is even valid as an MC? Not really.

To be honest Nas turns my stomach more than just about anyone else out there. The reason I have nothing to do with "Stillmatic" is not just because I am unimpressed with it as an album but b/c Nas continues to look back on his past with such a self-flattering eye. You can't talk about weak movies, weak videos, weak collabs, weak alter-egos, looking weak with your shirt off tats, weak albums and expect me to take that sh*t seriously.

Dissing the Roots? Now that's just plain foolish.

I hope Thought puts this guy back in his now rightful place: On the shelf where nobody cares. Jay did him a favor by putting his name back in the mouths of street-people. Now hopefully Thought will do us one and shut this ignorant fool up for a little while.

Honestly, I think this has gone far enough. Much respect to OKAYPLAYERS for giving The Roots their backing on this matter, but noone's really saying where they stand nor are you offering any sound or mature advice to the band. I hear a bunch of "Nas sucks" which is a parallell for "knock this chip off my shoulder" or even more juvenile "your mother". I think The Roots Crew is the right crew to play the adults in this whole drama and cast it away as the bullshit that it truly is.

"You always hurt the ones you love"
If this is true, then ask yourself this question: Am I hurting The Roots by being an instigator in this immature schoolyard beef?

Music is music, okayplayer is my stomping grounds on the internet, but other than that.... I could care less about what Nas, The Roots, Jay-Z, or some damn radio show has to say about anything. It's all words. Shyt happens. Jesus got talked about. Let's breathe. Stay cool playas.

I agree,I think this whole battle thing needs to slow down, now everybody is trying to pick out someone to battle,it seems to me that Nas doesn't even want to battle Jay anymore so why would he battle Thought?we are only making this bigger than it will be.We are only keeping this fire alive by talking about it.

if you ask me (and you didn't), i think that nas is looking for something to keep him buzzing, something to keep people talking about him, something to keep him hot... unfortunately if it's nas vs. thought, it's gonna be a slaying by thought, no question. i should hope thatin this era or ultra-violent machinations coming to life by serial killers who have killed more negroes in the studio than the taliban thought to kill, bruhs can keep it on wax and not take it out to the woodshed...

You have a point. Nas did just release an album and what better way to get so free publicity than to loud mouth somebody 'cause you know they're gonna loud mouth you back. Nas is somewhere like "keep saying my name! i love this bullshit". I am not going to keep giving him them satisfaction. Let's face it, he's mediocre as far as MCs go and not worth all this effort.

You can't have a song and video like "What They Do", then back Mr. "Big Pimpin" himself, even playing the offending song. Then have a band member go make beats for NSync.

This is really a "glass house" battle. Right down to recruiting project pat and nelly furtado's platinum pipes to expand fan base.

Nas is right. ?uest is right. Mr. Pot, shake hands with Mr. Kettle. I own several albums be each side, but let's be real...both didn't keep it as real after their respective debuts.

Roots fans, walk it off. For real. To deny that the Roots have sold out as well is to argue with your heart, not with your head.

5 albums deep...where did they suck...

Nastradamous sucked
I am was ok at best..

Organix was ok
DYWM was ill
Illadelp ditto
TFA ditto
live album ditto
MTV unplugged ditto

where did they go wrong..good music is good music ..plain and simple they never stopped making good music no matter who it's with...
12856, I thought it suffered

TFA, Come Alive, and Unplugged were all lackluster to me. The Roots peaked 96-97. "You Got Me" was pure schlock to me. And with peeps like Project Pat listed as guests on this new album, can't say I'm jumping for joy in anticipation for that either.

i know it's your opinion, but TFA, when considered as art for art's sake, is perhaps one of the top 10 albums of the 90s. it's not a bangin hiphop album (at least, not like illadelph, illmatic, ready to die, 36 chambers, etc.) but it's an artistic statement on a par with ok computer, kid A, pinkerton, etc.

hear ye, hear ye, All ye inhabitants of Okayland,
The the appointed time is near, the prophecy nearly fulfilled.
The Grand Battle Hip Hop Armageddon is brewing. Where all the MCs great and small,(e.g. black thought and me) wack and dope(e.g. too short and mos def) shall gather in one park and BATTLE.
Yea, it shall be a terrible day!!! Balls of spit inumerable shall fly, neurons firing till they runneth out of vesicles, bad breath shall abound, but fear not, is this not the essence of Hip Hop? the challenge, the retort, the oooohs and aaaahs of quick wit. It has come full circle to where it all began!! East to West, North to South. Prepare thine ears for thou shalt hear dope lyrics the likes of which have never been heard before and shall not be heard ever again.
There are those who do not believe that Black Thought should reply to the infidel Nasir sbuh(shit be upon him)
Well, What the fuck do thou thinkest Black Thought rappeth about in his albums (All 5 of them)? HIS SKILLS!!!!!!
Fools, BT has consistantly prophecied about how no one can withstand his mic skills. How long will ye doubt? Now the time has come. BT fear not, nor let thine heart be trouble. ?uest shall be at thine right hand, Kamal at thine left. Together they shall give thee the dopest, funkiest, slamminest, raw organic, battle beat to ever ooze between the ears of mankind. Do not worry about albums sales, think only of thine honor as MC. Nasir sbuh will crumble like dog doodoo before thee. He shall run and call on upon help from Puffy and his wack minions. Then shall the Grand battle begin. Jay Z shall repent from his wayward tongue and drop conscious lyrics alongside thee and other okay MCs.
the battle shall be fierce, for puffy shall call Dr. Dre in an attempt to out do thee, Eminem and Ice Cube shall join the enemy in hopes of redeeming shattered face. Fear not. Pete Rock, Primo, Jay Dee, shall come to thine aid. Eve shall join thee and denounce lil kim, foxy brown shall wash the makeup off and repent as well. Wycleff shall join the chosen at the request of spragga benz foxy's boyfriend, (don't worry clef won't mc he just helps with the beats) but lauryn shall show up with pras whom she has been secretly training and he shall be tiiiight. The Black Sheep shall finally get it together. However, KRS-One will reveal his secret alliance with Puffy (which would explain his wackness lately) but fear not Outkast shall rebuke him. All the chosen MCs shall join thee. The spittle shall fly.

The infidels will use their buisness connections to lie to the masses,
they shall hire hos to shake phat asses
tempt thee with champaign glasses
but with eyes of eagles thou must look pass it
they are infidels and wack bastards.

Be strong, for in the final hour Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye shall appear in matching jump suits(red gold and green) and a boombox to cleanse the earth of all wackness. Tupac and Biggie shall rise from the dead holding hands. Nappy headed children shall all dance and recite the classics. John Ashcroft shall discover that his grandmother was black and then commit suicice. All shall be well.

it's not everybody's thing. some people feel that art needs to have another purpose.

i don't.

personally, i think art is its own purpose. if you try to assign a larger meaning, you often fail to appreciate the art itself in favor of the social message. and then the art begins to suffer (see talib kweli).

agreed. a lot of posts i read are basically saying the roots are above this shit, don't waste your time on nas, this is stupid, etc... and this is true. the roots have nothing to prove, and they should probably just ignore him.
sigh. if only this weren't hip hop.
but it is, and that means u must lyrically mollywhop nasty nas escobar seven ways till tuesday. i mean get in his ass. eat his lunch. put it on a dope ass beat. talk about his chipped tooth. talk about him falling off. talk about his wack ass verse in oochie wally. and then, talk about his chipped tooth again.
and THEN....squash it, and move on.

just my opinion.
