12629, Black Thought, Why?
Posted by Koku, Wed Feb-06-02 02:24 PM
I know it can't be just me.

After listening to that audio....I felt like Black Thought
really played the bitch move. He made it so clear that
he wasn't there for the taping of the Jay-Z Unplugged,
and that it was a project he wasn't involved in.

But the thing is....that's your fucking band. How the
hell are you gonna get on Hot97 and half represent your
crew? True, YOU weren't there...but the Roots were.
Whatever decisions your family makes, if they truly
are with good intentions, back that shit the fuck up!

And I understand that with "What They Do" the director
basically distorted the premise of the video to make it
seem like a direct dis towards artists, but YOU WERE
there. You sat on that bed with the chick a la Notorious
B.I.G.

It's not like you DIDN'T know what scene THAT was from.

?uest would have been the better person to speak on this
situation on the radio. Cause for real....I don't even
think Black Thought was feeling the Roots in his commentary.

Gotdamn shame.

knowing is the battle.

dont worry its all good it the roots neighbourhood, i hope.

there been alot of things said by okayplayers and various roots members since this whole jay-z thing, but it needs to stop. who cares if the roots played for jay-z, who cares if it seemed as though black thought never fully back up his band during a interview.

as long as the roots are still working a their album TOGETHER and it is released before i die then all is well

SHIT YALL NEED TO CHILL!

Check this out. Motherfucking Nas gets on the radio,
and makes negative remarks about your crew---I don't
care if you were comatose, mute, or incapicated...
that shit doesn't make one iota of difference---you
better back your fam the fuck up.

>there been alot of things said
>by okayplayers and various roots
>members since this whole jay-z

>stop.

Kum-ba-fucking-ya dude. Let's all smoke a blunt
and drink some Henny under the pale moonlight too
while we're at it.

The Roots should care. How the hell is this man
gonna get on the radio, and start calling other
peoples names? Pointing the finger in the opposite
direction?

That's some bitch shit to do, yo. That's the way
I feel about it, and I didn't need an alias to
make the fucking point.

>>Whatever decisions your family makes, if they truly

What if they are the wrong decisions? Fuck that, be real to delf. He didn't knock his fam, that don't mean he needs to support some bad habits.

>>And I understand that with "What They Do" the director
basically distorted the premise of the video to make it
seem like a direct dis towards artists, but YOU WERE
there. You sat on that bed with the chick a la Notorious
B.I.G.

The video was a sattire on hip-hop video's as a whole. My take was that none of it was personal with a bottom line of: keep it real... if you don't bust gats, don't front like a G (probably half the hip-hop community right there) If you don't roll in benz's, mansions, or with fake model ho's, then don't front like you do, because that's what sucks the soul right out of the art, leaving no art, but only product.

>>?uest would have been the better person to speak on this
situation on the radio. Cause for real....I don't even
think Black Thought was feeling the Roots in his commentary.

Quest, you are the illest right now, I'm always feeling your work, but I haven't agreed with some of your recent issues, maybe you would have been better to respond to what you are thinking as a representative of the Roots. My gut feeling is that these are your power moves. If they are not, I apologize again and again. However, right now, I see you as that dude in the schoolyard with powerful friends (Thought), pointing out your personal battles.

Thanks for keeping it real Thought.

I consider Quest an artist with a very positive aura but! ... when i saw him kinda roar at the beginning of the so called battle track on unplugged i was like ... damn man whuts up with that ? Jigga may be this jigga may be that but ...is jigga worth that enthousiasm ? I was like ... tshh whatever .. he my man ... he's drummin doin his thing !

But then when they switched to infamous I was like ... maaaan ... did you have to go there ? ... but my head was still nodding and i was cheering on and grinning as fuck coz that switch was the shit ! Next thing: NYstate of mind ! ... i paused for a sec ... and wondered where this shit was going ... I was like ... these people are getting their ass in hot water ...

My man just said sumtin like: "thank god BT aintinvolved in this shit ... that'd trigger an everlast = dilated type equation " remember "bobby fisher" ? whatever. The roots Hub in Sunglasses, Scratch with all that "we run new york" background vocals etc
They all endorsed Jiggas Flag at that moment !

It's only right Nas gets heated ... I got heated deep within but my love for the roots kinda kept it on the low ... I was like well ... they're having fun out there and it damn sure IS fun to hear that shit so just take it easy ... Well !

End of the story: BT is right not to be in favour of an amalgamating the position purpously endorsed by his Squad and his certainly intentional abscence from the unplugged screen that day. I'm sure he could have had a feature appearance but just didn't for obvious (even more obvious now) reasons.

Nas is the one being kinda childish in his approach of the situation ...but let them take this to the record ... BT sounded like he wasn't too relaxed about that whole shit "he aint familiar with me " etc etc "it's a small thing" etc etc but NOTHING on hot 97 is small! so we gon see what comes outta that !

I wan't some Waxbangin! get it on!

I still can't knock BT's approach, he did tear into Nas just a little with the "Back to Africa" shit. I'd say it's now one for one and they can call it quits.

jus cuz you want beef dont knock someone who has more sense....if i was thought i would probably say the same shit, he is an individual, fuck "save face" thats the real punkin out, thats straight up frontin, if thought wanted to back up the fact that the roots did unplugged with jay-z then he probably would have been there (on stage), you seem to forget that they are a band and each person plays a role and each person has their own mind, and black thought had absolutley no input (from what i see and from what everyone has said) on this project

if nas really said somethin to thought on wax that was true (not callin him a hypocrite for shit he aint even do) he would probably get a good dosage

12648, RE: Basically.

he handled it like a man period...you dont go and start fights over bullshit like some schoolyard children, you handle it like a man, nas said some shit on the radio so he called and answered the very next day and cleared that shit up quick...he went on to explain how nas got his "facts backwards" (as many do here), the what they do was a satire on the dickriding that was goin on and NOT an attack on all who rap about champagne (I have heard this explained countless times for years now cuz people still get it wrong), bamboozled was also a satire, now if people dont get what a satire is then thats their own misunderstanding, the roots never were anti-champagne they were simply anti-dickriding ("you cant shine from the next man skill"), and like he said if the shit is about unplugged then say it (and even then thats not something thought should answer too because HE DIDNT PLAY A PART IN THAT, if it was about that then you would probably have heard audio from ?uest defending the collab), nas aint say shit that made sense and thought simply pointed that out like a man straight up with no bullshit....and for those who think he is punkin out how bout that he actually hit nas back with the real contradicting thats goin on, the fact that nas aint doin shit to help communities or his people while the roots and thought are contributing on the reg, did yall just stop listenin cuz you aint hear him say "FUCK NAS! WE THE ROOTS! I WILL BATTLE YOU!"????

Again and again. I don't need any further clarification.
Black Thought was a weak representative today.

Nas questioned the integrity of the Roots in 3 different
situations:

1.) Bamboozled
2.) Jay-Z: Unplugged
3.) What They Do Video

Area One: "Bamboozled is a statement on how sorry
things are and how sorry things get." I can concur
with Thought's take on the movie, and their role.
Bamboozled was an excellent satirical film.

Area Two: "Why didn't he just speak on that?
If that's what it's about then why not speak on that
situation where Black Thought was not present?"

Damon Dash: You ain't gotta really explain yourself....
Black Thought: You feel me?

"It's not like I was there....I wasn't there taking
nobody's side."

Nobody ever said he you had to, Thought. But you could
at least be there for your family when they're getting
attacked for rocking with J. If it wasn't no beef, state
the purpose.

"If you really had issues on the whole unplugged thing,
that's what you should have spoke on, and not involved
me....."

Pardon me, but isn't Black Thought an integral element
of the Roots Crew? He did say that the Roots are universal
musicians, right? As in "we" the Roots are universal
musicians? Or is he playing the Black Thought and the Roots
card?

How can he detach himself from the group? If I stood up
today, and said Fuck Ahmir! Fuck Kamal!! What kind of bitch
shit would that be for Thought to step back and have no
comment because he isn't being mentioned in the onslaught?

Family is family. Like I said, if the intentions of the
band were to simply play universal music, then thought
should have just left it at that. No beef started if
your intentions are good and clear. Why should he
selectively disassociate himself from the band?

Should he disassociate himself from the instrumental
elements of the Grammy too?

Area Three: "...Sattire of the state of the game as
presented by the director, Charles Stone, III....
some of the settings, it's some of the lighting, some of
the lighting and some of the background might have resembled
yahmean somebody else's video, come at the director,
don't come at the artist."

Again, here, Thought is clearly and comically putting
complete blame on the director. Why should I take issue
with Stone because Thought or anybody from the Roots
actively participated in the What They Do video?

Son, I've been on sets before, and nobody is that fucking
oblivious to the process. He knew what he was doing; and
he knew where the vibe was going with it. The hoochie
bitches, the bed, the mansion, the car (w/reflection LOL).

If Thought wasn't comfortable with the Roots involvement
in the Unplugged series, perhaps a phone call should have
been made prior to the experience to explain his stance.
But however it happened, when Nas attacked, he came at
the crew as a whole.

My
knowing is the battle.

see here's my thing, and i think this is what black thought is feelin. basically nas has no stance to say that the roots are fake rappers or anything besides the whole jay z thing. i'm not saying that since they did the jayz thing they are fake, but that's about the only point that nas can go with.
so, why doesn't nas stick to that point and go with it? only because if he did, it would be questioned just as much as it has been on these boards. so to give his arguement more "substance" (as shaky as it was) he takes blows at them for events that occured 7 years ago and a hair style of the lead vocalist that was also said goodbye to nearly 2 years ago. i don't know, i felt nas was stretchin on a lot of his points.

my question is, does nas forget that he did oochie wally? and did he forget that it really was a crappy song? if he has beef about the jayz unplugged thing (which seems like the only credible thing he could actually be mad about) then say that, he beat around the bush and made blind jabs at the vocalist and the band as a whole, without much substancial evidence.

you might think his complaint about the what they do video has cred, but think again. if he was upset about mob deep and biggy, then address that when it happened....7 YEARS AGO. don't come out and whine about it after they do an unplugged with someone you currently have a beef with.

that's my opinion.

12660, Say That Then.

I wholeheartedly agree. Nas basically started dealing
blows cause apparently the brother doesn't seem to
comfortable with himself. He's hauled insults
from Jay-Z, Roots, Nature, to Mobb Deep, etc.

I think it's everyone's expectations of him that has
put him up against the wall, and feeling like everybody's
out to get him. I mean, how would you feel if you started
out with a stellar LP, and everything just descended from
there? And cats weren't hesitant to tell you that you
fell off? Nas has BEEN mad.

>basically nas
>has no stance to say
>that the roots are fake
>rappers or anything besides the
>whole jay z thing. i'm
>not saying that since they
>did the jayz thing they
>are fake, but that's about
>the only point that nas
>can go with.

Nas isn't really one of my favorite artists at all, and
I don't have a problem with any career moves that the
Roots have decided to go with, cause I'm all about
"universal musicians", and people reaching for better
opportunities.

However, if you think about it from his perspective, I see
where Nas is coming from. No matter what the Roots say about
the premise of "What They Do," if you were one of those
artists who thought you were the shit swinging your
champagne glasses next to shorty with the dangerous
cleavage, then obviously you were salty as fuck when you
saw your supposed 'lifestyle' parodied. That video left
a permanent imprint. People WILL take ish personal even
if it doesn't necessarily apply.

>if he has beef
>about the jayz unplugged thing
>(which seems like the only
>credible thing he could actually
>be mad about) then say
>that, he beat around the
>bush and made blind jabs
>at the vocalist and the
>band as a whole, without
>much substancial evidence.

He came at Thought, the Roots, their roles in Bamboozled.
He attacked everybody. And yes, I do agree, if his
beef was *only* with the Unplugged venture, then Nas
should have only spoken on that. But with that said,
why the hell did Black Thought call in?

>you might think his complaint about
>the what they do video
>has cred, but think again.
>if he was upset about
>mob deep and biggy, then
>address that when it happened....7
>YEARS AGO. don't come out
>and whine about it after
>they do an unplugged with
>someone you currently have a
>beef with.

7 Years ago, or yesterday, Nas may have felt this strongly
about it all of this time. There are probably quite a
few artists who have a permanent chip on their shoulder
because of that video. He didn't have any other
ammunition to come at the Roots with. So agreeably, he
was limited with his references, but "What They Do",
IS what they did.

I hold Nas just as accountable for all of his records from
Stillmatic to Illmatic. Whatever you record can always be
a point of reference.

My

How do you really defend your group collaborating with NSync and Jay-Z when you have a song like What They Do in your discography?

I mean, really? How?

?uest criticized Nas publicly in a similar manner a few years ago. Maybe Thought isn't as eager to don ?uest's "Captain Hypocrite" costume........

He did, however have the "I was not there" defense for himself. So he used the only ammo, albeit weak, that he had.

Either way, it's a glass house battle where fakeness abounds on both sides.

black thought is asking why nas took a personal shot at him and not talk about the issuse which is at hand which is the unplugged album. i seriously doubt this will end here and we might see a serious nasty relation from the roots remember the roots are a much deeper camp than nas the roots have the soulqurians and if it turns into a battle of camps you best believe the roots will win this hands down. .....pheronolgy will be the most anticipated album this summer hands down

Umm, Biggie and Nas were cool, they were just on some "competition" shit. When they both were trying to get int he game, they used to chill, and talk about doing it up.

Nas and Pac were supposed to meet and discuss taking the Nas disses off "Machiavelli", they were gonna make amends, but Pac died in Vegas a week before they were scheduled to meet.

How is Nas making you like Jay-z more? It CAN'T be because of the alleged "dick-riding"......because Jay has used BOTH of lyrics more than THEY have!

i heard anger in his voice and i lik how he played his role...

he didn't put all blame on the dirctor, he sayed it was his idea, his concept and the video pokes fun at many scenarios

when i saw it i thought ofmay other groups/artist other than jay-z and biggie and also thought that the message was be original, be your own man/group don't copy or sell out

damn criticize the man for doin his job...

how would you or yal have done it?

Did you hear what i heard??? First of all Black Thought, while a part of the Roots collective is an individual. He had to not only speak as a man who's been attacked, but also for the crew. And he did both.

Did you people not hear him breakin down that the Roots do music internationally, and that the work with everyone. Beyond that it was a valid point of how Nas called out "fake rapper" and "dreads dont make you righteous" specifically attacking Thought when he's angry about the others performing behind Jay-Z.

Thought was basically explaining that Nas dont know him, and that he had no reason to be comin at him like that. And from Nas's point of view (like he pointed out), he wasnt even there. Whether Black Thought supports them workin with Jay-Z is irrelevant. Nas didnt see Black Thought on stage helpin Jay dis him.

You clowns got nerve sayin Thought bitched out, when Nas just made the biggest BITCH MOVE of his carreer. And he's gonna pay for it. This man got all high and mighty off this Ether buzz and felt he could just go runnin off at the mouth. Did nas really have to dis Prodigy and Nature on record too? I mean those his peeps. Fuck this... you hoes can think what you want. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

does any of those things that nas mentioned matter? What the fuck do any of the stuff he said got to do with the real problem he has? I agree with BT if he had an issue with the band playin his shit then address it. Don't go addressin some other shit that is totally irrelevent. They made fun in a video, so the fuck what, don't u know they are plenty of other videos that make fun of other videos. did biggie really have a problem with them makin that video? who the fuck cares its a video, damn it. They played "porch monkeys" in a movie. Aren't they supposed to act that way in the movie, which is titled "Bamboozled"? If he really had a problem with it, why didn't he mention it when it happened? Dreads, what the fuck do dreads got to do with anything? Is nas critisizin his appearance or his music or somethin else? Why bring all that up, when u really have a problem with somethin else, "the roots backin Jay-Z on Mtv's unplugged", and he only has a problem with that cause its Jay-Z. What if the roots backed up Jah-rule, you think he would have a problem then? I mean really come on with the bullshit. I like Nas and all, but all that was irrelevant. and if he really knew the roots then he would've known that the roots does music with anybody whose interested, whether its rock, pop, or rap. BT was cool, because he didn't go into all that irrelevant shit about nas (belly, god son, etc..), he just addressed what was said about the roots and thats that, no need to go into the particulars.

this is complete bullshit

My man's dp (POEM-CEES) put it like this:
"it's one of those things where nas said some dumb shit with confidence and black thought said some relatively reasonable shit in a somewhat unfocused fashion."

Thing dead.

Unless...

Nas tries to respond again, then it'll get ignorant. Or, Black Thought came with a rambling response to bait Nas into attacking again so the Roots would have an excuse to come with the brutal retort. What a silly conspiracy theory! Can't wait for zealots to lap it up! Ha.

I mean, I was doing the same thing too, but let's step back for a second and realize that these are two grown(ass) men who are using the radio station airwaves to exchange tough talk. It don't get more petty than that.

Thought and NAs should email each other, and then maybe a leak of the emails will be posted here, and then we can all grade whose email was wittier or more effective.
12703, Why???
Posted by Discman, Thu Feb-07-02 07:21 AM
Shit, he told you why.

Family or not... the same way you wouldn't always agree with what your own blood relatives do, maybe Thought didn't agree with backing up Jay-Z on television. Maybe he thought too that it would be a contradiction and decided to leave that one alone. It's one thing to be "cool" with Jay in person, but he knew how it would look if he got on the mic with him.

Bottom line, you don't always agree with your "family" on things so I don't have a problem with Thought as far as that's concerned.

I didn't agree with how he pointed the finger to the video director, because like you said, he "was there". But although he made it clear that The Roots is his family, he probably just didn't agree with one of their business moves. Period.

plain and simple. The Roots are grown men. They should've known playing Nas songs in the middle of Unplugged when Jay was dissing Nas would come back to bite them in the ass. Cats here are acting like that did not happen. They chose to insert themselves into the beef. It would've been a whole nother story if they had just played the music like it appears on the album. They had to put extras on it.

Thought should not have addressed Unplugged the way he did. He sounded defensive / sensitive and trying to downplay the heat the band is taking for what many of their fans perceived as selling out. To say he wasn't there was irrelevant. Success has many fathers, blame none.

Accountablitity as an artist. It is irrelevant if the Roots did the video 7 years ago or 20. Its like Gil-Scott Heron's poem being used in a Nike commercial. Does it matter that the "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" had been done 20 years before? Did that prevent the criticism?

Regardless of the intent of "What They Do" video, which you can see as satire or a diss, A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words. Not everyone even hears the lyrics to a song, but they're going to interpret the images. And its not like the Roots didn't get to see it before it aired. Music videos are the property of the Record Label and they can do whatever they want with the footage, re-edit it, scrap the whole thing. Charles Stone is not Stanley Kubrick and does not get final cut. So to me, for Thought to speak on that sounded like backpedalling too.

Yes, Thought nailed Nas on the Africa thing and that if he had beef with Unplugged he shoulda said, and nobody is blameless. Just keep it real, Roots lovers and haters alike.

12706, RE: Black Thought, Why?
Posted by omni, Thu Feb-07-02 09:17 AM
First off, why were both of them stuttering so damn much. Nas sounded jus straight up unintelligent like he couldn't formulate a fuckin sentence, and Thought was trippin over himself left and right.

The whole thing was some bullshit from the start. To me Nas sounded scared like when somebody is tryna say some shit to they mama and they know they bout to get they ass rocked, stutterin and shit tryna say somethin smart jus tryna get the last word out before they get popped. Then Thought sounded like he was about to get socked by somebody and he tryna explain why he shouldn't get socked cuz "I d-d-didn't necessarily sleep wit yo girl dogg... She w-w-w-wanted it f-f-f-first dogg, I mean, I didn't even know she had a-a-a mannnn. Shit, I ain't even met you b-b-before bruh, we coulda b-b-been best f-f-f-friends!"

This whole damn thing was stupid, from the start, and yeah, The Roots knew damn well what they did when they played Nas' tracks behind Jay-Z. Who wouldn't know that this shit would spark somethin, It's only obvious. Think about it, they were part of publicly humiliating Nas on national TV! They played a medley of his beats live while someone dissed him over them, all on MTV.

The Roots should have expected this, it was only a matter of time before it happened in my opinion. They should jus keep they mouths shut, because it was innevitable. What else is Nas to do, never mention it? Imagine how many cats are in his ear like "you gon let that shit slide!? These niggas dissin you over your own beats dancin and laughin on national TV clownin yo ass?!"

Jus think about it folks. It's his right to come at them, and Quest knows that damn well, I love the Roots, but unless they openly wanted beef with Nas, they shouldn't have done it.

Spirit is the mountains, forest, and vast countryside that surrounds it. Too many people live in the city, struggling each day for mere existence.
Most have forgotten how to live off the land, they only experience nature on class trips and short term vacations.

In this whole discussion of selling out we need to look at some things here. Now I didn't hear nothing about the Roots being sellouts when they were up for doin the Unplugged thing initially, but I had a good feeling somebody was gonna call them that. However, let's look at this..if any of you have been to a Roots show (as I luckly have on last Halloween in Philly) then you know that the Roots are about having fun. They might break out and straight do the Fabolous beat for You Can't Deny It, then break into Paul Revere by the Beatsie Boys, then Smell's like Teen Sprit by Nirvana. They even did the beat for Planet Rock while BT was singin Doo Doo Brown! And guess what?! It was DOPE! Fact of the matter is they love music and that's what they do. So they respect the fact that all people are Roots fans and they are going to have fun. With Jay-Z. Well the Roots are also a band who have to work. Think about it: Jay Z get's offered to do Unplugged, and since the show has a history of having live background music who will he get? None other than the Grammy Award winning Roots! Did they switch up the beat during the diss? Of course they did, but mad rappers have jacked other peoples beats and dissed the oppenent on their own track (ex:2nd Round KO Canibus uses the baseline from Mama Said Knock You Out...I could go all day listing others). And if you have gone to a Roots show, them switching the beats wouldn't be much of a surprise to you. But hey, the Roots are also a performance badn, so they get paid to play the music. If I hire a live band I'ma tell em to play what I want em to play. Fact of the matter is that Nas is not one to be talkin about sellin out when he switches to Escobar, nor about bad hip hop portrayals in movies (Belly!)! And about BT sounding angry...of course he was! It's only natural that when a person disses you, and when the person dissin is already a hypocrite and taking your artistry out of context, yes you will get mad. No The Roots aren't perfect, and I doubt that they would ever claim to be. However, in my opinion, The Roots have held together much more solidly than Nas. Debate all you want, The Roots, on every album have good SONGS! And when I say "song" I mean as a collective whole. Muscially and lyrically thier projects form as a cohesive unit. Personally, I beleieve Nas has been getting really weak production. His beats are mad simple and therefore only his lyrics stand out. His lyrics are the only thing holding weight and at that point it just sounds like some dope verses and not a cohesive SONG. I'd much rather hear good lyrics over a good beat making a dope song, than excellent lyrics over a mediocre beat making nothing but dope verses. Yes hip hop is partly based in rhymes, but the music is all part of that too. Nas has forgotten about that I believe.
As far as the Roots collabing with Project Pat...I pray to GOD that is a rumor. But I wouldn't be surpised if ther labels put them to that so they could sell more (they did win a Grammy and everybody is goin multiplatinum so they need more commercial appeal). As an artist myself I would like to stress to yall that when you only have your art, you have to do as much as you can to make it work for you so that you can EAT! Funny cause I don't see mad folks forming a lynch mob against De La for their song Baby Phat with Devin the Dude (the same guy who sings on "I Just Wanna Fuck You with Dr. Dre and Snoop). So, I say we need to think harder on what is "good" music and what it means to sell out. We need to realize that this industry is a buisiness and at some point, artistry becomes a moot point, especially when the main consumers of the Roots' music do not care about the musical art itself. Sorry for the length but I had to get that off my chest. Holla!
