MOS DEF - 'The New Danger' - 10.12.04

http://www.okayplayer.com/feature/

from ...

"Getting his start as a member of Urban Thermal Dynamics, and gaining fame on both De La Soul's 'Big Brother Beat' and Bush Babees' 'The Love Song', Mos Def's career took off during the late 90's indy boom. With the release of the collaborative Blackstar LP with Talib Kweli, as well as his own certified Gold LP, "Black On Both Sides", Mos secured a strong fanbase, who have been patiently waiting for a sophomore LP!! This October 12th, 2004 marks the FIVE YEAR anniversary to the date, since "Black On Both Sides" was released, and Mos celebrates that anniversary with 'The New Danger', a brand new studio LP featuring a whopping 18 new tracks, including 'War', 'Close Edge', 'Sex Love & Money', 'Ghetto Rock' and more!! Guest shots include Kanye West, Shuggie Otis, Paul Oscher, Minnesota, and more."

in a while, IMHO. first time I ever sat through a flash intro.

my one complaint is that i kept clicking on the arrows of the news scroll bar trying to get it to scroll up or down, but couldn't get it to work. took a minute to realize that you had to grab it and move it up and down yourself.

but beyond that, looks sick. run it back. looks sick!

i just picked up the new record about an hour ago.
a few problems:
i got the edited version by accident but i highly doubt virigin will take it back now that it's no longer shrink wrapped. i honestly cannot listen to edited music it distracks me entirely from what content there is. (any ideas?)
the other is that i had really high expectations going into this purchase, being that "black on..." was one of my highest ranked hip-hop records. i had no idea i'd be buying some sort of funky freestyle jazz record. so far what i've listened to has been mos checking his mic over bad brains jam sessions. am i alone in thinking this? granted, i didn't give it the full spin because of the edited thing, but i fear for the rest.

i probably just need to give it a chance, but i really want to love it and i think that might not happen.

I went out and picked up The New Danger before I even went to class! Talk about priorities, huh? Anyway, I've been listening all day and I must say that it's a real thorough release. I was feeling like a lover going through sexual withdrawl waiting on this and I must say, I reached my climax while listening to "The Panties" and "The Beggar". Glad to have you back in rotation Freak Daddy! (Then again...you never left).

YO, read this poem it's deep-
Part one of the untold testimony/Every experience was necessary.

At the time I didn't realize the things I would grow to despise
a reality so harsh that I wished that I would just diminish into the sky.
the trauma started when I was a baby girl
had me wondering if I should have ever came into this evil world
hmm I remember, I remember it all.
It was at the age of five that I had a peculiar
relationship with that guy.
The first man that I had ever gotten close too.
A little too close,
so close that he chose too, touch me in away that made me
become an adult too fast
and even though it was the past the effects would last.
The way he put himself inside of me
It was so nasty truly defiling me
x rated ,took my innocence too young for a girl the age of five to see.
My first broken heart wounded in my emotions.
too young to understand what why it had happened to me
so immediately I started fearing people
so I shut down to the world
all of a sudden I’m this fearful shameful little girl
and I started isolating myself
that was the age the my soul first started to cry for help
because of being mis understood
redundant rejection came about
that made the demon of low self esteem creep in
and over the years food became my only and best friend
because I couldn’t trust or reach out to any one or nothing else
cause when I tried
at that time all else failed.
and cause people wouldn't except me constantly reject me
that's when I began to guard my heart
and keep people out
a couple years after that I got in a traumatic accident that could have taken my life
I wanted it to take my life
But naw it wasn't my time.
So instead the experience began to make me question where and who is God.
Later on my image began to change
And people started looking at me strange
some people began to reject me because of my weight
rejected me because of my fate
and scarred me from their hate
when I became a teenager the effects from those painful experiences
started to really show
little did I know
I had never let the that anger go
And the thing I was about to go through
In high school
would cause more anger to build up
and later
cause ever -flowing tears
that I wouldn't be able to control ,

growing up in the nasty ghetto's
sometimes barely having enough money to survive there was many time
I questioned God why was I born please
when I lay down to go to sleep
let me just die
Although at the age of eight was the age when I first thought of ways that I could die
The age of fifteen was the age that I did my true attempt to commit suicide
How blessed was I ,
I over dosed on medicine expecting to die
but instead I wake up the next morning with a head ache and started to cry(Mark 16:18 They will pick up serpents; and (if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them; )they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well).
I’m gonna stop here until the Holy Spirit lead me to say more but that’s only if you could handle more.
because all of these rocky roads
are only small pieces of the part of my testimony untold. I opened up to you today not to invite you to a pity party but to strengthen someone’s soul.
to tell them that everyone those unfortunates are making me whole
because they are the things that introduced me to my best and only true friend and the redeemer of my soul.

So This poem I dedicate to, the rejected ,disrespected ,neglected, the bitter, the angry the hateful, the hurting, the soul sick, the depressed ,the stressed ,the hated and oppressed, the crying the weak the insecure, the meek, the poor, in lack ,the one who feels un loved, the one who feels like a failure, the suicidal the one that wants to die, I’m here to tell you that there is hope for you because all of these things once was I
but if it wasn’t for calling on the name of Jesus I wouldn’t be alive.
that was when I grew to know that every one Of my experiences was good for me and was very necessary for my life
all the anguish, mental abuse, emotional abuse, sexually abuse, social rejection, family rejection, false protection, mental torment, lack of love, lack of security, lack of trust, lack of friends, lack of peace, lack of money, self worthless image, self hatred, glutton, nervous habits, traumatic experiences, dramatic experiences, near death experiences, broken homes, misuses relationships, false relation ships, false care, false love, the many disappointments, the many failures, the heart break, the heart ache, and overall all of my mistakes.
Had to happen so what has to happen can happen cause it introduced me to the real God and brought me as close as I am to Him today.
No I was not raised in a church
but I found out who God really was through my hurt
in all of those times the lord was right there by my side
That's why I can truly say Blessed assurance Jesus is mine
Oh what a fortaste of Glory divine
This is my story this is my song
may the God of my salvation get the glory all the day long
every battle made me stronger
every test took me higher
every struggle helped me grow
and every experience made me wiser
even after every thing I said today which is still only a little portion of my story
all this 23 year old God fearing woman have to say is to Almighty God be the Glory.
Psalms 34:19 A righteous man may have many troubles,
but the LORD delivers him from them all
Mark 16:1818They will pick up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well.

- more and more i listen, the more i respect many of the songs for what they are and for what was accomplished.

good music but 'again, still ' different....from what i can tell, you have some: blues, funk, rock, soul, spoken word, other sounds...then you have hip-hop.

like alot of artist, he changed it up a bit...i think this album is in the lines of a "Love Below," a album that grows on you with time.

top 5 songs :

getto rock
modern marvel
life is real
bedstuy parade & funeral march

5th, between:
the rape over
sex, love, and money

I feel the only "danger" is people going into this purchase
as blind as I did. I've been a fan following Mos from Urban
Thrermal Dynamics days to the historic Wetlands show where
Rawkus discovered him and Kweli. I didn't think this album
was going to be exactly like "Black On Both Sides" but I
still think I was robbed and this is NOWHERE NEAR the
creative outing experienced on his now gold solo debut. Out
of 18 cuts I liked maybe 4. Mos has been hit with the sophmore
jinx. I pray he can re-bound from it.

1246, FIVE YEARS IN THE WAITING
Posted by SevenOneEighter, Fri Oct-15-04 12:45 PM
The New Danger....I've waited FIVE YEARS! Fuck it, i'm writing a long review!!
as MOS reiterates on the album "what it is what it is what it is"

the album is a lot of things. i think it requires patience to listen to and really appreciate. Mos took some risks and sometimes it pays off tremendously creating some of his best work, but its short comings are apparrent. Too much hyping up mic checking and not enough memorable lines. I have also heard a lot of these songs on 12" so i was disappointed they were on it. Overall I enjoy the album for "what it is" but I think Mos can put his all into making a better record.

1. The Boogie Man Song -- great intro, lyrics, pulls you in
2. Freaky Black Greetings -- Rock instrumental/All Hype/Indifferent
3. Ghetto Rock -- pretty HOT. still feels like an intro song even though its track 3. the beat rides like OC's "Times UP" but Mos doesnt come with it like OC hes kinda gettin us ready
4. Zimzallabim -- a successful mesh of Rock & Rap. Mos comes spittin FIRE. which is why its dope. Mos Raps ('cause he's a rapper right?) and the band rocks in the beginning and bridge.
5. The Rape Over -- I enjoyed this live and on 12" but thought it was unnecessary for an album. I want to hear NEW BEATS.
6. Blue Black Jack -- I Guess. Mos just kinda rambles over a blues jam session. its cool, will Mos Definitely get skipped on the regular.
7. Bedstuy Parade & Funeral March -- OKay. Here is where I"m like. LETS GO! BRING IT! ITS time for the album to pick it up. the bass line is nice nice nice nice as Mos says. but its all mic checking hype. I've learned to enjoy it after listening a bunch but damn i wanted to hear him Spittin on this one. So now we've got 7 songs through and only 1 that has three verses of rhymes. which sets us up for
8. Sex, Love & Money -- when I heard FUNK FLEX debut this on HOT 97 I thought it was ATROCIOUS...and I still do. the Title makes it seem like its about something but really its all talking. the beat doesnt translate. this song sucks. its my least favorite on the record.
9. Sunshine -- generic Kanye beat. BUT he Saves the day. MOS comes spitting on this track. ITS DOPE.
10. Close Edge -- as spit on Dave Chappelle. PRetty Tight.
11. THe Panties -- some smoothed out sexy shit. IM REALLY FEELIN IT. THE ALBUM IS PICKING UP
12. War -- GREAT LYRICS. I like the voice over recording. the sample, the Hard-core break down. definitely one of the strongest songs on the album. good punk/rap mesh.
13. Grown Man Business -- Straight Rap. its HOT. But, c'mon lets get a new sample. now that two beats we all already know on the album it took FIVE YEARS TO RELEASE. Minnesotta kicks a dope verse (little lengthy but then again look at this post)reppin the BX. Mos KILLS IT. MOS has some of his best lines on this track
14. Modern Marvel -- it irks me to think that some heads are gonna skip this 10 minute masterpiece cause they have no patience. this is the climax of the record. He sings from the heart and does some role playing, while setting up some great versus. Really shines bright.
15. Life Is Real -- I GOT EX-WIFE BEFF AND SHIT THATS HOW DEEP IT GET....HOT SHIT.
16. THe Easy Spell -- If theres one song I could eliminate on the album this would be it. doesnt work. no appeal. its in the way of a great segway.
17. The Beggar -- this one is real nice. sounds personal. Mos pleaing to his Woman. I'm feelin it.
18. Champion Requiem -- THis is my favorite track. Which is ironic because i'm all about Mos trying different things but when it comes down to it the 88 keys song just feels right. Maybe this is the last track for a reason. like, okay, Black Star is on the way? who knows. but Back to Basics, 88 Keys ends up being the best track on the album. Mos spits his best lines. THE VIBE IS all there. "MY WORK IS PERSONAL I"M A WORKING PERSON I PUT IN WORK I WORK WITH PURPOSE"

overall I really like the new danger. but, i'm a pretty die hard fan. it is what it is. I think Mos has a lot of important and fresh shit to make i just hope we can hear it sooner than it took to get this. ENOUGH ALREADLY. We NEED BLACK STAR. Mos and Kwa can pull the best out of each other. They both need it.

You're entitled to your opinion as is everyone but for
the record I don't agree with yours. I think the songs
on this new album are thrown together with no direction
or cohesiveness. Many of them sound like mix-tape cuts
ie. the "Rape Over" and this is subpar when compared to
his first release "B.O.B.S." If you can sit through the
18 cuts and not hit the FF-->, you are a man of great
intestinal fortitude. I'm waiting for J-Live to save the
day with another classic full length... that guy can't
be stopped!

Hopefully, Danger is one of them jawns I have to listen to 50 times to fall in love with. After listening to it once, I wasn't feeling it AT ALL. Mumbling is not and will never be cool (e.g. Don't Say Nothing) and even though "Elvis Presley ain't got no soul", Mos need not do rock and roll.

Posted by howisya, Thu Oct-21-04 03:45 AM
a-side and b-side single released earlier this year featuring Ludacris and Vinia Mojica, respectively

i didn't realize ludacris still appeared on rare non-album 12" singles.. interesting both of these songs were cut, but all 3 tracks including the "rape over" (labeled "freestyle") from the 2003 "close edge" single are on here (although no pharoahe monch on "war").
1258, As I keep listenin..
Posted by brotherman, Thu Oct-21-04 06:01 PM
It just sounds better n better. especially o 4th listen on.
Weak spots : Rape Over, Zimzallibim is ok, but the begining is kinda off.., Close edge is ok, War is hot til mos starts yelling "Fuck You, Pay Me". The rest is pretty nice. Boogie Man song is a perfect opener. Even though "Freaky Black Greetings" doesnt have much for lyrics, the beat gets down right mesmerizing by the end. "Sunshine" is fine, but I think "Sex, Love, and Money" is HOT. I dont care what anyone on here or anywhere else says about it. I dont know what yall are or arent hearing but I think that drum breat wit the flute commmin in to it to add a lil melody?? sheeeittt And the lyrics are ok, I get into it. Well "Modern Marvel" is genious btu I would take off the first 2 minutes ifi was him...its nota matter of patience. I mean he AINT Marvin Gaye! But its still a superb tribute song, once he gets to the tributing. Oh and I feel funn yadmiting this, but YES "THE EASY SPELL" is HOT!!! lol I dunno what it is about it, but it sounds a lil...addicting. "Y.E.A. yea, you can
get it" lol The Painties and the beggar are nice n smooth joints that bang nicely. O and "Bedstuy Parade & Funeral March" is nice as well, even though it has more f his half-there/spaced out lyrics. hahahahaa But the tightest cut on here is the last, Champion Requiem" HOT HOT HOT!

Fuck mos for shittin on his fans at Cal State L.A. this weekend...$15 (or $25 if you went through ticketmaster). I don't understand what that was all about but it definitely wasn't cool...no performance, which was fine, but his attitude and demeanor was just straight up rude, to people that are his fans no less. I've never had the opportunity to see him live, and had high hopes, but during the Q&A when people asked him questions and he just gave smart ass remarks and no answers, it made me bitter and disappointed. I actually stayed for the whole thing while people walked out once they saw he really didn't want to be there. He didn't even know where he was at...it really left a bad taste in my mouth and I would have told him if they would have left the mike open. Not cool...just not cool. I was going to go to his concert at HOB, but I was so turned of by the way he was acting, I'm not. My girlfriend busted her ass to get tickets, because she knows how much of a fan I am of his work, and when we left she could see the disappointment on my face...and I could see it on everyone else's.

That nigga is on diva status now or some shit...make sure he's got a cigarette.

Hey what's y'all I'm new to the board, man that's depressing to hear Mos Def dog out his fans like that, he's one of the few mc's that I respect these days, I couldn't picture him acting like that!
1261, Songs are old and thrown together.
Posted by FreakyDeaky, Mon Oct-25-04 10:33 PM
So they put a few tracks recorded for the Black Jack Johnson LP on the album, together with a few hip hop tracks that are cool for a mixtape, but definitely not album material.
Maybe he thought "okay, i'm gonna give them their album now, they'll buy it anyway, so I'm gonna take a look at my demos and put that ish together" or the label did that. Who knows?

by the way:
why does the uk get "the jump off" as a bonus cut?

The idea of putting one album out instead of one rock album with Black Jack Johnson and one hip hop album as Mos Def is just stupid. Rockheads will not notice the Black Jack Johnson tracks, Hip Hop Heads will hate them, I could go on and on.

Time to listen to the wonderful BOBS again.

I'll buy it anyway (two times on vinyl and one cd, same thing with the re-release without "the rape over"), because I'm a one of the stupid Mos Def nerds around there that wants to have everything.

i'm straight up digging this album

The reach across genres may come across as ADD but if you like mixing your own cd's....well...in the era of ipods and personal mixed cd's most music people listen to tends to cross genres.
This cd crosses genres, in a good way, hiphop is threaded solidly through out the album keeping the album a cohesive mix.
I kept waiting for the black jack johson album but this may make a smoother segway for broader (narrower minded) audiences to accept his venture in R&R.
I think it would be a shame if hiphop audiennces can't keep up with a decent ecclectic mix of musical genres.

Yo I'm NOT feelin' this album. It' hurts me to say that, but it's the truth. This coming from a true Mos fan. Maybe my expectations were way too high, and it'll eventually grow on me, but as for now...NOPE ! I don't listen blues or rock. I am a lover of hip-hop !

Some of rap's roots are in the blues and rock n' roll.

Freedom Writer EP still available at Capital City Records (10th and U NW) and Brian McKenzie Infoshop (9th and P NW), for those who live in DC and/or give a fuck (ha).

really digging this record...love the creativity...i think his experiments & expansions were all pulled off successfully and come off very natural and unforced...getting a lot of rotation in my player...
