gift of gab has a really distinctive and creative flow. good beats, some turntablism, good hooks...
their extended crew is just as distinctive, lateef and lyrics born and some other folks. just real unique, real tight rhymes and sometimes catchy as hell ish (deception!).
plus they have one of the illest songs in the past decade in alphabet aerobics, when gab constructs an entire song with alliteration going through the alphabet. oh, and the tempo increases so by the end the spitting is just nasty.
when i saw them in northampton with del they had a bangin asian singer performing with them too, anyone know who that is?
man, all that shit doesn't even matter, cuz you could hate blackalicious and still buy that album just off the guest appearances, good lord. it should tell you something when all those cats are down to work with a group. that's my recommendation, i hope you're sold.
there are few groups i like that much.

until you hear "Chemical Calisthenics"

daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!

They were just here tonight (no Xcel tho :-( ) and Gab absolutely ripped it!

They have a new singer - a guy named 'Bear' (I believe that's what they said) - Erinn Anova and Joyo are sounding better and better - Bear did a rendition of "You Can't Win" by MJ (The Wiz) - Gab's flow leaves you awestruck because he's so clear and can rhyme so fast...

Xcel's production is incredible on the Blazing Arrow album - great shit to bump - feel good type music.

12143, i second that shit

this is where GOG breaks down the periodic table right???
good lord...

I picked up nia on the stregth of okps...after vic introduced it to ?uest/fire and they were speaking loudly about it...i figured i had nothing to lose.

I loved the beats, the lyrics, Gabs flow is out the box...and overall it just sounds REAL fresh...probably had something to do w/ time it was released, but overall that's how i can describe it. i lent it to a guy at work and he never gave it back :'(..i bought it on wax..but i still need a cd copy again(i ain't that hi tech yet)

Much love,
Kyle

Kid 1 - Could you tell us a bedtime story, like you used to?
SR - Look, don't y'all think y'all too old for that now?
Kids - No
SR - Listen, I got an adult question for y'all since y'all
like...11 now. Y'all ever get horny?
Kid 1 - Uncle Ricky!
SR - Now I don't mean to sound perverted, but do you ever
have like sexual urges?
Kids - No!
SR - No? Well you will, so sit your behind down and listen to
Uncle Ricky...and De La...tell y'all a grown up story
Kids - Okay

the production is solid, along the lines of their bredren dj shadow.

Gift of gab is an excellent lyricist, but, it's his voice i have a few difficulties with.

I don't know, it's kinda like the uk emcee thing and why they don't blow up here, it has to do with their accent. I don't think his pronunciation flows so easy over beats. He's very proper-sounding. Sounds like some white suburban kid rapping.

their only weakness, in my view, is gab's voice. if you can get past that, you should love them. for me, he's kinda hit-or-miss. sometimes the voice is just too grading that i hate the song. i don't know if he's switchin it up or what, but i haven't been put off by his voice in any of the four new songs. here's hoping!

I think that was one of the tighest albums of 2000. Lyrics, flow, beats, everything. I'm a little scurred of this new album-too many outside influences. Not that I don't love OK artists, but I'm worried that they may lose some of their flava because MCA is getting them to collabo with their other artists. I feel most of their hip-hop artists, but they are creating a formula for the "Underground Hip-hop album". Can't wait to hear the album though, I hope it calms my fears.
12166, Selling Blackalicious
Posted by al_sharp, Sat Feb-23-02 09:16 PM
Yo, nobody fucks with Gift of Gab, man. Nobody needs to sell you on Blackalicious cuz they will do it for you. Check this:

Artificial amateurs aren't at all amazing
Analytically I assault, animate things
Broken barriers bounded by the bomb beat
Buildings are broken, basically I'm bombarding
Casually create catastrophies, casualties
Cancelling cats, got their canopies collapsing
Detonate a dime of dank daily doin' dope
Demonstrations, don dada on the down low
Eatin' other editors with each and every energetic
Epileptic episode, elevated etiquitte
Furious, fat, fabulous, fantastic
Flurries of funk felt, feeding the fanatics
Gift got great global goods gone glorious
Gettin' godly in this game with the goriest
Hit 'em high, hella height, historical
Hey, holocaust hints, hear 'em holler at your homeboy
Imitators idolize, I intimidate
In an instant I'll rise in an irate state
Juiced on my jams like jheri curls, jockin' joints
Justly, it's just me writin' my journals
Kindly I'm kindling all kinds of King Kong
Karate kicks fight kids in my kingdom
Let me live a long life, lyrically lessons is learned
Lame louses just lose to my leverage
My mind makes marvelous moves, masses marvel and move
Many mock what I've mastered
Niggas nap knowin' I'm nice naturally
Knack, never lack, make noise nationally
Operation opposition off, not optional
Out of sight, out of mind, wide beaming opticals
Perfected poems, powerful punchlines
Pummeling petty powder puffs in my prime
Quite quaint quotes keep quiet, it's Quannum
Quarrelers ain't got a quarter of what we got, uh
Really raw raps, rising up rapidly
Riding the rushing radioactivity
Super scientifical sound search, sought
Silencing stupified saps that are soft
Tales ten times talented, too tough
Take that, challengers, get a tune-up
Universal, unique, untouched
Unadulterated, the raw uncut
Verb vice lord, victorious, valid
Violate vibes that are vein, make 'em vanish
Wild, work well, I'm a wise wordsmith just weavin' up words
Weeded up on my workshift
Xerox, my x-radiation holes is large
X-type letters and xylophone tones
Yellowback yakmouth young ones yawn
Yesterday's lawn yards sell my lawn
Zig-zag zombies zoomin' to the Zenith
Zero in zen thoughts, overzealous rhyme zealots

Good...can you say it faster?

Blackalicious is a fresh change of pace. They're not wierd like Cannibal OX but they're way different than almost all other rap groups they're amazing i think. The EP alone had me sold, Blackalicious may have some flaws like the main rappers voice but he's an incredible lyricist, he's intelligent, and his flow is sick. The voice isn't so hard to get over at all just like Quasimoto.

i love this group

west coast is keeping the experiments going and east coast is keeping the old school alive. Put the two together you get groups like Blackalicious, Dilated, Roots, Lootpack and others.

i love this era of hip-hop and its gonna get better with all the new shit coming out this year from COmmon, the ROots, talib, mos, pharaohe, slum village, blackalicious, j5, planet asia, zion i, and tons of others.

tis a great day to be fan.

In my opinion & observation, MCA hip-hop artists basically A&R their own albums.....MCA usually hears an okp project after is 60-80% done track-wise (i.e. Common's EC). There are no A&R cats in the studio looking over the artists/groups shoulders while they are putting it down...they usually do administration schtuff to help out. The label usually gives input when it comes to single picking time, if $$$ is disappearing at a rapid rate vs. the recording progress timeframe, or if the project doesn't have a clear cut single and options are discussed.....or of course if the Prez wants Erykah Badu on the hook instead of the then unknown Jill Scott.
FYI, Blackalicious did everything that THEY wanted to do on this album.

Quest, I saw them open up for you guys in DC one time...did you school em on improving their live performance at all, cuz their sound shit was horrible, you couldnt make a word out that they said! Still, one of the best groups in the last 5 years by far.

Maybe the sound was effed up or something, because Blackalicious RIP IT live. Particularly with Latyrx, but also with Versatyle and Joyo.

pros:

-- nice, solid production
-- Gab is nice with his
-- a bunch of other stuff that people have already said

cons (and most of these are superficial/aesthetic things):

-- i think the name "Blackalicious" sounds like a name of a Heather Hunter porn flick
-- um ... i had some more, but they've slipped my mind.
