Posted by NICEflutinBOY, Sat Apr-20-02 05:40 PM
Ive seen the mans name ever since i was 12 listenin to tribe ... now hes workin on phrenology... whats the deal with bob? I can see by the update that he is optimizing some of the sounds for phrenology but i need more than that. what does the man do so well that makes people come back for more?

Not to say that bob isn't a genius, 'cuase he his :)

11230, RE: what does he do? i'll tell you
Posted by Zo, Sun Apr-21-02 01:09 PM
Let me ask this.
I wanna know the read deal here....

What exactly does the mixing process for the roots include ?
I mean besides burning control rooms with candles
(cough, cough, battery, cough) .

Is it all protoolized ? and if so, do you record to tape first ?

And somthing i've been dying to know,
The drums man... the drums...
are they MPCized ?
I mean - recorded live - cut up - and re programmed to the mpc ?

'Cuase, and with no disrespect...
99% of the drums aren't really live...
I know you can hold it tight... but no one can hold it THAT tight.
11231, hahahaha....
Posted by sundasill, Sun Apr-21-02 03:08 PM
ahahahahahahhahahaa......

11232, sheeeeeeeeeeit
Posted by qoolquest, Mon Apr-22-02 06:33 AM
drums.

decide on which section you want to go.

dirty (lesson 3)
blend in (dynamite)
break-o-thon (double trouble)
dry (voodoo album)
primotised (push up your lighter)
triggered (what they do)
organic (?uest vs. rahzel)
radio (thinner high end)
club (bigger thinner high end)
jeepable (bass!)

i use those code words first. cats are different.
the reason why the drums make you doubt if it's me or not is based on the outboard gear. playing the pattern isn't even the challenge. that's easy. you just gotta concentrate hard with no distractions (6 out of 10 i track in the dark). if i want lesson dirty i use vacuum compressing. it's hard to find this stuff so it depends on the studio. tracking on a neve board helps in this department. neve boards were used in the 70's and give you a great vintage sound. there are some programs that you can use to make your shit sound like they were sampled via a sp1200. post phrenology i never saw the true advantage of pro tools. now i do. and not the obvious reason stuff either (cause i aint looped myself since illadelph halflife). russ refuses to mix with protools (so analog)...bob on the other hand has jumped in the pool. and i frankly see how. for starters the time we save on rewinding tape is cut by half. wheras "mellow my man" in 94 took 12 hours to mix (member that rhodes echo on "oh shit"! in verse one? he'd listen, make small adjustment, rewind (2minutes), listen, adjust, rewind (2minutes).....took a half hour for that trick alone. with protools? 10 minutes flat. of course the risk is in the computer freezing up (see "lift ya fist" sessions) but you can get more done in a short amount of time. after drums the bass, keys, guitar are put under the same scrutiny. vocals are last cause you have to prepare the "bed" for the vocalist to get in. once levels are set, then you do "drops". (take bass out for 4, drop snare here). after that...tricks :panning, echos, whatever little trickery you hear. then you readjust levels. you break for an hour or two come back with fresh ears and make last minute adjustments. now we take an extra step. we break for the night and come back next day. make whatever adjustments. and print various mixes (clean, radio, drums up, down, etc)

so that's it in a nutshell.

I just know all the albums he's been involved with have been real clear and bassy at the same time. Syleena Johnsons shyt
rattles in my ride for real. I was listening to swept away from the roots the other day like damn. To have these songs so bassy without distortion......lovely. Just Lovely
