10736, Kweli's verse on Quik's LP
Posted by DonKnutts, Sun May-26-02 12:27 PM
from the song "Proem," also featuring Playa Hamm and Shyheim.

Did Kweli change it up a little for a different audience? You tell me.

Kweli, I rock the body and so forth and so on
You can get the dick
One to grow on or one to blow on
DJ Quik get his dough on
I spit-kick a flow on
Got swift sh’t I throw on
‘Cause I’mma leave with that float on
Plus I get my roll on like Baby and Mannie Fresh
After I go on y’all n’ggas’ll never bust like tantric sex
The universal n’ggas that represent the planet best
How I manifest from Brooklyn to Los Angeles
People!
We hold it down like wherever you from
Got my name all in your mouth like you pierced your tongue
Pimp the game so hard we leave them whores numb
The more come, Kweli, about to blow like George Young
I’m the Don Cheadle of rap
Dope like arms, needles and crack
My lyrics attack and arm ya people like (?)
In Cali studios we rest the heat up on the console
Peep Hollywood n’ggas who think we sweet like the Ponchos(?)
Claimin’ they gangsta and street like they lookin’ for beef
But with the gun in they teeth they just MC’s lookin’ for beats
Y’all don’t want trouble
We pop bubbles and flex muscle
N’ggas don’t respect your lyrics, they respect your hustle
The industry is like Kinko’s, making copies while you wait
And the people always fiend for ‘New Sh’t” like Clue tapes
Y’all speedin’ to ya fate, slow down like screw tapes
‘Cause as long as you rockin’ with Quik, n’gga you straight

10737, hahaha

this cant be a Kweli verse.

shit looks horrendous

damn.

I think Kweli's losing it. Ive been a dedicated fan for the longest, and it brakes me that hes heading in this direction. Whats really funny is that many people said that The Wu was the group that was going to hold out the longest before they sold out to the masses. I think it stands to this day. 10 years is alongggggg time, but like the homie says" it happens to all of them, even the greatest"...
oh well.

Kweli, don't take this as an insult man. You truely are an inspiration to many including myslef, but to see this type of shit coming from a genius like yourself is strictly peculiar. We all gotta eat, but im a miss the classic shit that gave you true recogniton and respect among the heads, but like I mentioned, that shit aint gonna feed you I guess... Good luck and much success to you, even if it aint with us " underground cats"...

PEACE and Blessings BRO

Not the losers but the winners tell the story
Ignore the truth
Take out the gorey details and get the glory
My Grandfather died when I was a shorty
He fought for a country
It couldn't be his cause til this day they still dont want me
My Great-Grandmother put Arsenic in The Master's tea
After she came from hearin a speech from Marcus Garvey
Not seperate or evil
So fuck Fergerson and Plessi
Our folks and slaves, bringin it like Nat Turner and Denmark Besy
The age of the industy the plantation system was dead
Let em work, they can make a enough to eat and put a roof over their head
You still a muthafuckin slave
Doesn't matter if you near white, a little light
Or blacker than a thousand midnights
We writin a new age with new slaves
We need to bless the stage
Cause the audience' brains affected by the devils like Cage
Call us brave but the system got our peoples actin depraved
Forget the years you been alive
We livin in the same age
Yo tell me where your mind is at
We livin in the same age
Take that with you to your grave
Grow up before you show up
Take that with you to your grave
Grow up before you show up

10742, AND he wrote this

(all lyrics from www.ohhla.com)

>Straight to apocalypse is where I'm takin the art
>Givin niggaz battle scars, ALWAYS makin my mark
>You fakin the part of gangster, til niggaz break in your spot
>You straight bitch whether I say it or not

these lines (from "down for the count") parallel the part of the lyrics quoted above where Kweli says fake gangsta rappers turn to "MC's looking for beats" when guns are put in their mouths. the whole "thug rappers are revealed as really soft when faced with violence" is a Kweli trademark.

>Where we at? Thug rebels love metal clubs ghetto
>when the slugs let go like Frankie Beverly

more gunplay from Kweli, from the same verse (and it sounds like he is including himself under the descriptor "thug rebel" when you look at it in context, doesn't it?)

>Forever we stack notes like the treasury, flow heavenly

monetary brag rap, same verse.

>Get you high on speech laced with obscenity
>Niggaz be gassed like Cipher Sounds, and need rescue remedy

Cipher Sounds reference here, DJ Clue reference in the verse above. Name drop mix tape DJ name, hope for mix tape love. LOL. (the above one sounded like a dis though) (this is also from the same "Down for the Count" verse).

here's another politically incorrect gem, from a song called "millionaires" on some album called "Mission Control Presents Prehistoric Sounds"....my favorite line from the ones quoted below is "poor people who are stupid die quickly" (PLEASE tell me that's a misquote...LOL)...

I move stealth through the chicken-heads
With talcum on they chests
Yo Malcom's gone
And the elders ain't impressed with my struggle
I try to make a profit and I'll flip it so it double
Being poor just ain't worth the trouble
Extension of my mansion
Where I keep my stacks
Deep in the study where my nerve endings react
There ain't no stoppin me
My feelings and thoughts I have monopolies
Magnetic fields and fields of dreams is my property
Poor people who are stupid die quickly
I'm a millionaire that's carrying all my assets with me

___

Hey, Kweli is dodging the chickenheads!

LOL.

At this point, I think very few artists live up to the title "conscious" by the strict definition that most folks use.
10743, for the sarcasm-impaired
Posted by spirit, Mon May-27-02 07:08 AM
yes, i WAS being sarcastic when I said the "poor people who are stupid die quickly" line was my favorite.

my point?

kweli is far from the angelic figure you all seem to think he is on the mic. his lyrics have their fair share of gun lyrics, sprinkles of misogyny, glorification of drug use, and even the occasional materialistic line.

so why is the verse listed above any surprise?

for me, the only thing that deviates from his prior lyrics is the pimp/whore line. that was obvious pandering to pimp rap fans (who a lot of people assume are synonymous with Quik's audience, although Quik is more versatile than many think).
10744, oh yeah
Posted by spirit, Mon May-27-02 07:10 AM
and the "get my roll on" line. come on now. kweli will never be able to afford the kind of jewelry Baby rocks. LOL.
10745, i dont care if hes conscious or not
Posted by GumDrops, Mon May-27-02 10:14 PM
i just want to hear some well constructed and thought out rhymes. not simple shit with lame metaphors and smilies.
10746, come on spirt....
Posted by Quez, Mon May-27-02 07:27 AM
I know you know this already but here we go....

The verse i posted as well as many other's that are on another level, a higher "train of thought" were before thier solos. If you wanna do a Kweli before BOBS vs. Kweli After its no contest. The mans flow is enhanced now but his subject matter is lacking... and he suffers from soundin "corny" a lot. "Memories Live" and "Good Mourning" are probably the best two songs he's done post BOBS. "For Women" suffers from that too long... essay drag.

Posted by nightfall2105, Mon May-27-02 09:44 AM
It's ill, but it's just awkward to hear it coming from Kweli.
10750, that in no way is ill.
Posted by rawlakid, Mon May-27-02 12:08 PM
BTW... this man also wrote that VERSE from "The Truth" featuring Pharoah and Common.

Thts a classic.

Either you( dude that said it was ill) havent been a Kweli fan for a very long time, or you just digest any half assed lyrics..
10751, how is his lyrics half assed
Posted by urbgriot, Mon May-27-02 12:57 PM
they seem to be pretty good to me...
10752, Kwelis just getting lazy...
Posted by rawlakid, Mon May-27-02 01:39 PM
if you can;t see that somethin is wrong. Go back and listen, I mean LISTEN;) to his songs. Thye inspired, motivated, intriuged, whatever you wanna use. Kweli's songs used to do that. Now, it's blah. Heard that good to you joint and its dissapointing, but like i said above, if he feels that's what he needs to do, then by all means go ahead. He's already provided us with classic good shit that will live for ever, while his wack ish will be forgotten.
10753, his flow
Posted by urbgriot, Mon May-27-02 02:17 PM
is actually getting better.. he doesn't rush as much...
10754, hes not improving
Posted by GumDrops, Mon May-27-02 10:12 PM
hes just doing the same ol same ol. where are the new respirations? the new brown skin lady? etc. the reflection eternal album wasnt as good as it should have been even - i was actually a little dissapointed. it should have been to kweli what BOBS was to mos - a classic.
10755, RE: Cosign
Posted by rushpac, Wed May-29-02 09:49 AM
He use to rush before, because he had alot of hot shit to say in limited time span. His breath control was 1 of the things that made him dope as hell. I'm going to try to keep my faith in the "Manifesto".
10756, I think it's ill too
Posted by DonKnutts, Tue May-28-02 03:38 AM
Kweli sounds nice, but Shyheim *really* laces that track -- homey sounds like he just broke fast, hungry as a mugg.

If you look at all kweli songs, especially were he is a guest on the track he spits relative subject matter. i.e. sharp shooters, don't mess with my man remix. he even raps about philly on the track he did with bahamadia. I agree with the post that he has been losing some content in his songs but i think you should wait to hear his next album before you make up your mind, all he's been doing is rapping on other people's tracks. if any of you heard bridge to bama that should have been a refresher, at least it was for me. kweli's a hot mc but anybody who thinks he's underground needs to dig a little deeper..."Even underground niggas sell they soul to satan
And I've met commercial niggas who be hating
So I don't fall for the separation" -kweli, Jackin 4 beats
