I taped the show, and I've watched it about 10 times already. Maybe its just me, but it looked like ?uest was caught offguard when rahzel started beatboxin after thoughts 3rd verse and jill's hook/?uest's amazing drumming. He's like oh damn, i gotta play the hi-hat for this, and it gets sketchy for a second or two. I don't know if y'all saw that, but it happened. I wonder if maybe it wasn't planned or something.

Man, the magic of TV. First of all...

-How the HELL can MTV2 put up "Live" in the right hand corner, when I'm at home at 9pm watching myself in the crowd? That's kinda shady. At least say "taped in front of a live studio audience" like they did on "Good Times". :)

-The show was tight, but they did edit a lot of dopeness out. I was tripping how they mixed everything up, cause Thought's shirt was soaked on the second song, then it was dry as a bone on one of the last joints. :) I'm so glad they kept the Common/Thought breakdance battle in there. That was classic! Especially when Com hit the Windmill....

-Jill was amazing. Amazing. And the Roots destroyed it...as usual. I'm really digging the addition of the guitar player (can somebody provide a name?) When he hit "Under the Bridge" everybody lost it!

-Cody Chestnutt was ill as hell...smilin' and chewing that gum, singing about fertilizing the bush...

-And Common's "Baby Blue Knitted Forearm Guards" were the best...

Great show!!!!

So they played a different version of You got me...that shyt was too bangin'! So she was rockin' the black eye shadow...homegyrl was lookin' fly and ripped it! I'm done.

I'm sorry, call me a hater, but I absolutely HATED the performance of "You Got Me". I was not feeling Jill's tribute to Sun-Ra. Also, from a business standpoint, why fool with your most popular song? 10523, people respond to celebrity
Posted by spirit, Wed Jul-03-02 12:16 PM
hence the howls when jill walked out before she even did anything.

people do NOT respond to anonymity.

hence the silence while the cody song ran (b/c it was a new song no one knew, basically low-key overall, and no one knew Cody...."water" has a bit more energy to it and came early in the set, thus the crowd's more enthusiastic response...)

unknown Cody + unknown song + slow tempo + song performed late in the set = lethargic audience reaction (until Thought urged the crowd "get involved! clap your hands to what he's doing" james brown-style, livening folks up a bit and partially invalidating something Quest posted a long while ago in a "Brooklyn Babylon" thread about Thought's inability to read crowds during shows (referring to the shooting of the performance of Roots tunes during a Carribbean parade in Brooklyn for the film).

10534, RE: Setlist?
Posted by comment, Wed Jul-03-02 05:01 AM
you missed the roots doing the intro twice. You only caught the second time around. It was kinda bugged when they stopped and did the whole beginning over again. The first time was much more energetic than the second. Wonder what happened...
10535, RE: Setlist?
Posted by Simmdawg187, Wed Jul-03-02 05:40 AM
Yeah, they did a few joints twice, and each time, the energy was significantly less. When Common came out the first time, folks went nuts! Then, they redid the song and he made his "intro" again. It didn't work as well...

Also, same for the intro. But I think they aired the first take...I think...

The show was Wonderful...Jill was beautiful!!!!

and recreating the same vibe for the second time was...well...
we did it!

oh the joys of TV!..the entire time that Sway was talking all i could hear in my head was, "Hi, this is you boy Sway from MTV" ya'll know his catch sentence. Common doing the back spins was a flashback to him doing it once before! and thought can move

Posted by qoolquest, Tue Jul-02-02 08:01 PM
remember when charlie brown would fly a kite...and mess around and get all tangled in that shit? sorta like the kite started flying him about?

that was com the first time we ran TAW (we had to run TAW/love of../next movement 2ce).

he tried to windmill and his foot got caught in a web of mike cables. and the more he spun, the more he was trapped under the web. so at the end when he freezes, which is of course the DEFINING moment when you are breaking....he tryna look all hard and shit, but all he winds up looking like is defeated, under a sea of cables....

and the look on his face.

that wasn't no tech shit keith!, com made you do that shit again didn't he?

you should've seen the cat who was b-boying in the crowd while the dj was spinning. He did a kick flip and his shoe flew about 70 feet and almost took out the bar.

Just goes to show, labels need to provide that healthcare. Hip hop is a dangerous business.
10551, the real question..

the way people was drinking in that piece last night, if the bar got hurt, there might have been mass hysteria.

-"you got me"...by far the biggest highlight (the rearrangement was ill!)
- "eric b for president" during last verse of "next movement"
- "thought at work" LIVE!
- com breaking out the windmill (thought don't wanna see him for real)

-how peace all the guest were before and after the show. Mad interaction amongst all. Pictures, autographs, whatever..

-scratch beatboxing Clipse "grinding" when they had to start the beginning over. I thought they were playing the instrumental... thatjoint was perfect.

-They manner and excuetion of every song. You could tell how everything was on point, percussion, bass, gutiar. straight sharp!

-when black thought threw his water bottle filled with sketchy ass green tea and cats were like "here" "here". that was just too funny and nasty!

-when the dude behind me yelled to common, "eh yo com, my mom needs her oven mitt back!"

all and all, The Roots are the livest Hip Hop show that has the talent to do the things they do. Others may have the energy, but lack in talent. The Roots have it all, energy & talent, and top it off with 100% dundee style.

Anywayz this was a hot show. Theres ONE thing though...I know
?uest you say that you can play the same thing for two different crowds and be fine because the new crowd didnt see it yet...However, You know now you just went on TV...I best not hear this same shit when yall go on Smokin Grooves and then do your own tour. I love the roots so much, but my favorite thing is when they switch up their set...and when they dont...it gets kinda disappointing. Well Word hot show...let the spotlight linger.

Seeing this on TV will only give me a deeper appreciation since standing four rows from the front I spent a large part of the earlier set gawking at Res.

(posting story knowing full well some moron will bring it up in an unrelated thread later and call me a dickrider...but I just don't give a fuuuuuuuuuu....)
Anyway, in the line outside the 9:30 waiting for doors to open, I see Cody Chestnutt walk up to the tour bus, which is right beside the line to get in. No one else recognizes him because...well...he doesn't even have an album out (somebody put that album out!*)...

me: Cody Chestnutt, rock star!

Cody turns, smiles, and waves. tour bus door opens.

Who should be holding the tour bus door open other than a now much thinner Mr. Questlove? Thin enough for the crowd not to recognize, but not thin enough to escape my well-trained Okayplayer eye (LOL).

Me: Questlove, rock star! (hey, it's 100 degrees, I'm too hot to be too creative here)

Quest smiles, waves, Cody gets on, Quest closes door.

Quest re-opens door.

Quest: (something I can't hear)

Quest waves me over.

Quest: (no doubt noticing that I am wearing Okayplayer shirt) Who do you post as?

me: Spirit.

Quest gives "of course" shrug (we met once before, actually twice, but only once post-OKP) smiles, gives dap.

Me: (in damn near 100 degree weather, mind you (LOL), an hour before the show is set to start) So, what are you doing still on the tour bus?

Quest: (smiling) Because it's air conditioned. (slamming door before a heat exhausted Spirit can storm in)

LOL.

*shaking fist angrily to the sky and cursing the weather gods for the humidity*

It's not like I actually expected to get on the bus. I could be a serial killer for all he knows. Ha-ha.

Anyway, I was gonna try to get Questo to sign a copy of my DYWM? liner notes, but he didn't have a pen. Nor did I. What I really should have tried to do was hit him with a copy of my CD. It was too hot for me to think straight though.

Did I say it was hot out there?

* Cody says he is very close to settling on a distribution deal for "Headphone Masterpiece", he was just fighting hard for a fair contract/deal. so everyone who has been waiting to hear it will hear it soon.

In response to message #0

LAST EDITED ON Jul-03-02 AT 09:49 AM (EST)

they did it twice for the folks in the 9:30 Club audience (for some reason, they did "Thought At Work" and "Love of my Life" twice). I think the second breaking session was the one they showed, when Com did the ill backspin.
Thought busted a few moves too.

They looked like they were havign a ball. I think they had a breaking routine at an earlier Roots/Common show, also in 9:30, if my poor memory serves (the same show where Buckshot made a surprise appearance).

Jill Scott's vocals were amazing. Hypnotic, even. Hearing her live is much more powerful than on CD, as a brother from Philly was trying to tell me and a few other folks around me before the show started (this same cat almost killed six people trying to catch a Questlove drumstick...lol!*).

Rahzel and Scratch have a really good chemistry...and Scratch kept the crowd from being restless by beatboxing/vocally recreating "Grindin" in-between songs (for some reason the MTV2 folks made the band stop periodically b/t songs).

Ben Kenney is a very welcome addition and the Red Hot Chili Peppers cover was classic.

ps: big up to my man Divine (Fong Sai) who came onstage outta nowhere during "water" to enthusiastically encourage the crowd to clap along to Quest's drum pattern...lol...he was hype up in the V.I.P. section for the rest of the show, wilding out next to Res...I assume the guy in the orange jersey by Res was Label Guy (the master of ceremonies kept giving him a shout-out by his government name).

* I asked the guitar tech to throw me Hub's bass, but he wouldn't comply. LOL.

And why come MTV2 care about cursin' anyhow? I mean there was no cover vers of Ice-T's G.L.G.B.N.A.F or Gheto's Boys Gangster of Love.....

Are there any plans to re-edit the sound and just drop the microphone volume during the naughty bits?

That being said, the show sounded and looked lovely. Great production values. And the music, well the folks on this thread have covered it pretty well by now.....

10586, we performed at 630
Posted by qoolquest, Wed Jul-03-02 08:34 PM
a live feed was fed to the new york.
they got it in complete form at 730
which meant that they had 1 1/2 hours
to mix sound, and beep out all the curse/offending
words.
i knew this shit was coming cause they were a nightmare for me on the jay z project. it's more than just four letter words.
references. sound alikes. whatever...

Let me say that I think they did a real nice job with the sound *EXCEPT* on the drop outs.

The show was amazing...probably the best I've seen. The Roots, Jill Scott and COM all at once! For 2 freakin' bucks! Aside from it being just short of a quickie...I mean the shit was dope. Jill Scott just ripped it. Common touched my hand TWICE! The floating camera almost hit me up side the head like 6 times...but it was cool (just had to remember to dodge and duck everytime I saw a black figure in the corner of my eye).

Thanks yous and Shout outs:

-Thanks Kyle and Friends for providing with good laughs and conversation while waiting in line and for buying me a sprite. It was MAD hot outside. (And dude with the ice thanks!)

-Thanks to the dude with black coofie for lettin' me use your cell like 5 times. I know I was gettin' on your nerves lol.

-Thanks Kyle's friend again for letting me take your spot right up front! (*Hugs*)

-Shout outs to the camera guy for only getting my side of the crowd like twice. Dude beside me got on like every front row shout and I was straight cut off lol. I know I'm ugly but damn!

-Thanks to my man B Kyle for hooking me up. My friends and I love you dearly!

-Thanks to Rahzel, Res, Thought, and Sway for allowing us to take pics w/ yall!

-Shouts to Barticus and his crew (beside us once again)...first in line for the tix and right up front for the show!

-Thanks everyone up front and in my vicinity for wearing deordorant (I was mighty surprised not to smell any funk)...we was mad cramped and still rocking. My head was shoved under dude next to me arm pit almost the whole show.

-Thanx MTV and the whole Roots crew for making this shyt happen!!

Definitely an experience that will be deeply embedded in my memory for years to come!!! :)

I watched the 9:00 pm show last night and was on the lookout to see if Okayplayer was representing. I saw a white kid wearing the blue ?uest shirt and two sistas throwing up the OKP sign during a crowd shot, which was nice. The show was off the chain, "Water" and "Thought at Work" are ridiculous, as well as Scratch's interludes. I'm thoroughly digging Cody Chestnutt and "The Seed." I think he will be a nice addition to the album. I had to do a double take when I first him speak, but then it started to make sense. I also dug the b-boy/rock & roll theme of the show. Once again, the 5th dynasty crew comes through!

sup friends-

dope show, 930 club is the best venue , y'all got to see it on TV, so my words are backed up. took the day off from work to go and it was well worth it (gotta use them vacation days boy!)

jill was dope, cody chestnutt should do a commercial for like Bubblicious bubble gum or something (ha!) and the Roots brought it, as did Common - like always. Good job out there guys.

Now, did anyone tape this ish? I need to get a dub dub dub like some Big Tymers.

10593, loved it
Posted by MicheleQJ, Wed Jul-03-02 05:59 AM
company coming over tonight---the replay at 11 or whatever will be the treat o' the night-- if i had a vcr id tape it -haha

the rhytym of 'you got me' was tight and the intro to it was real cool---like the vocal effects mimicing the cabassas or shakers or whatever --i dont think it was cut...seemed a good length of time...they ended up flashing the title up again when jill started since it had been a while

'the seed' and cody were dope -- nice voice and presence -- thought sounded good too on the under the bridge joint

real good energy (especially considering the fact as i read here that multiple takes were done)

wish there wasnt so much beeping out---this was cable after all

was hot though -- inspiring show

saw grav in the crowd a few times

only caught the last 10 minutes, but mad props to the roots for that ish with cody. bridging musical gaps like that is important, and it takes talent and good understanding of the music to make it sound so tight. i saw em with bt on letterman or conan or something a while back, and was impressed. i mean, it wasn't my favorite song of theirs, but it was another good example of the roots crossing stylistic and cultural barriers. how else we gonna come to a common cultural ground and make it sound so raw?

peace

hot show, dc represented like we always do when the roots come to our city. only complaint was that they should've sold more tickets so people could see what it's really like when the roots play at the 9:30 club.

sorry it wasn't truely live

thoughts?

- Ben adds ridic depth to the performance, I'm wordless

- Scratch shined, though Ra didn't seem to do any beatboxing except that one small part

- Water, I have to hear that so I can fully get the lyrics, I felt where they are going with it and it does sound like it has something to do with Malik B imho. sounds like message to a "friend on drugs" song... but that's their business

- YOU GOT ME psycadelic(sp) version with the Mamma's and Pappas type sound mixed with easternish influence... damn! all I needed to see was a sitar I HAVE TO have that version, somebody anybody inbox me

- com

- love on the Cody joint he deserves the exposure, looked like a Jay/Roots love share thing - pay it forward right?

- I was happy with everything but the amount of time they gave them

k

back to hell, thank god it's friday for me

first of all, peace to everybody in my immediate vicinity at the front of the stage, especially the little light skinneded shorty who I kep elowing in the side of the head and whos hair I was pulling..

i sported brighly colored head gear which managed to make it onto MTV's cameras a total of 0 times..

best part of the show was Jill of cours. Took me a while to figure out what the hell she was saying at first but she raised the intenity of the show in my opinion.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioning the Roots' version of Sardines. Easily my 2nd favorite moment of the show

ridiculous

10601, my view
Posted by kec, Wed Jul-03-02 07:56 AM
i've been to a lot of roots concerts mainly in the midwest (chicago) so it was a different feel.

i can say that it was pretty good overall, too short. it was kinda nerve wrecking that they had to do songs over...welcome to the wonderfiul world of television.

i especially like the first song it had a nice beat. wish they had of did a few more classics.

of course i appreciated com, despite the baby tee and arm warmers. he made it up with the breakin..i'm sure dem dare would be proud

jill was nice but it was a lot of feedback so it was hard to understand what she was sayin at times.

cody chestnut- personally i was not feeling the song and from the looks of it neither was the audience. a lot of us just kinda stood there and stared at him.

Neosoul special Thought said something to the effect that cats who are influenced by us will look to us to see where we are going to take it next. If that is true, cats were fu(king staring last night especially after that version of "You Got Me"
It had me before Jill started singing, from what I hear they played for about 5 minutes before she sung. So mad they cut that out. Not the Best Roots Show I've seen but it was up there.
But the "You Got Me" was all stupid.
10604, i had a feeling cody would be there!
Posted by dro, Wed Jul-03-02 09:32 AM
i know i didn't say it before the show, but i had a feeling the roots would bring cody along. they seem to really be pushing this cat. cody's a cool guy. his songs that are supposed to be funny are funny as hell too.

MAAAAN...i never thought i'd see such preposturousness in my fucking LIFE!!!!!!!(this isn't criticism of the performance by the way)-this corny ass white boy in front of me had the FUCKING NEEERRVE to rock a hat with fake dreads....not that i take it "offensively" or anything- i could care less to tell you the truth...actually come to think of it- that was the funniest thing i'd seen all week!! but anyways, if you remember seeing this cat- post something about it please- i want someone to laugh with!!

10607, just saw the tape...
Posted by honeybun, Wed Jul-03-02 12:20 PM
due to the fact that i am currently cablically challenged i just saw the show - the show was awsome & though the mtv2 version was good i feel it didnt do it justice - mainly cause there's nuthin like actually being there...

highlights for me were:

-Jill Scott performing, she took my breath away - i mean ive seen her live before but this time was the best
-Com & BT breakdancin - com got all tangled up in the cords the first time - when they did it again he took time & cleared the mic cords away so those in tv land missed it
-whutever that first song was - yeah its my new favorite song - cant git it outta my head - whuts the title?

....and Jill Scott was just amazing! The whole time all I could think of was here is the 2nd coming of Grace Slick, which seemed like a welcome departure from the sound of "Who is....". I would love to know how the new arrangement came about and if M2 is gonna release this as an album.
10610, that show was all around tight

"-scratch beatboxing Clipse "grinding" when they had to start the beginning over. I thought they were playing the instrumental... thatjoint was perfect"

that shit WAS tight... now anyone the front right side could agree w me n my girls when that dude would NOT SHUT UP: "hey!!
its me!!! on mtv!! i'm HERE!! SOUTHEAST!!! I'M HEREEEE!!!"
i wanted to hit him for real...
everythin else was peace too cept that i'm jus a lil too short and that tall ass photographer was all up IN my view lol...
(shorty in the red dress for yall who were there)

10612, JJ FAD?!!?!
Posted by Barticus, Thu Jul-04-02 05:19 AM
at first i was pissed of that JJ FAD wasnt one of the "special guests" as black thought had hinted on the hidden track from TRCA.

-common stood infront of me and pointed when he said "...and white dudes" but on the second take i got a point when he said "it's all for you"
-jill scott did the best version of "you got me" ever, it beat the new wave one, it beat the lounge one.
-tv is soo fake, pausing, stopping, and re-doing songs. i saw ?uests clutch broke in one song and he was opening and closing the hi-hat with his hand...i thought that was cool but they went and re-did everything.
-i didn't get into "the seed" when i first heard it, but when i saw it on TV and i could actully hear the lyrics i liked it alot more.
-shouts to all the okayplayers i saw
-it was very hot outside, some guy had ice, that was nice
-thought at work w/the percussion player ruled ass, the apache/watch me now b-boy battle was deffinitly a highlight of the show.
10613, this is such a shame
Posted by Dove, Thu Jul-04-02 07:02 AM
all the energy - a dope show

and in 2 weeks we'll be seeing the Roots with Lauryn Hill - probably singing Cumbaya & passing out tissue....

I was pissed I couldn't get a ticket, but I loved the tv show, even if it was too short. My highlights:

--Com vs. Thought breakdance battle
--You got Me (of course!)
--Love of My Life (one of my favorites!)

Looking forward to Smokin' Grooves at Nissan Pavillion

Nothing but love throughout the spot except when this "Big Worm" lookin brother bumrushed his way through the crowd smellin like pickled beets.

Com wrecked the floor with his house slippers and knitted elbow warmers.

Jill is beautiful! Nuff Said.

Cody was nicely planting the seed in the bush!

Scratch and Rahzel kept themselves occupied with that grindin joint. It was mastery.

Sounded like thoughts voice was going, but he still ripped! Big ^^up Black.

The Legendary Roots Crew Reigns Supreme.

Yo Quest I almost got caught in the head with the drumstick but luckily my man Rob caught it. I tried to grab it from him but he started swingin.

Res was looking good up in the balcony--No Doubt.

Peace to all the peoples that waited in the early dawn for ticks and the shouts to Jose, Rob, Marice, Mama, and the brother in the white shirt next to me who wasn't lettin those groupies get in front of us.
