i posted one day, and almost immediately it was deleted - all because the mod thought i was violating the guidelines, which i was not.

the bottom line is that my post was deleted because someone thought i was someone else who was mascarading as another okp.

i was heated at first, so the mod did inbox me and after a while i got over it.

they said "it's tough posting in here". i think it was just a stunt to pull simply because i'm sort of a newbie.

i just hope it doesn't happen again.

they even had *me* fooled.... I started thinking "well, damn maybe she *is* me!"

2. Over the posting limit.
3. When a post offends someone and the mod gets an inbox requesting deletion (sometimes).
4. When a mod is trimming the board.

These are the 4 reasons. They don't have the time to inbox every time someone gets deleted, cuz these boards create like 6 pages of new posts every day 'n shit. Sometimes a post accidentally gets deleted. You inbox them, they'll fix it if it was an accident. If it was one of the four reasons above, they will either reply to your inbox or not.

95% of the time it should be fairly clear.

I never knew that people were such babies. Seriously. Plus, they're bored :/

There's ALWAYS a reason. Occasionally there's a fuck up, especially while trimming. I've accidentally deleted a post or two, and inboxed the owner. However, that's in PTP where shit is ultra-slow. In GD, it's damn near impossible to keep up and keep track of every post. I leave GD for an hour and a post that was on page 1 is now on page 8 with 50 replies.

But if you have SERIOUS mod problems, talk to Dove or Reg. If you're real pissed cuz a post you liked wasn't in clear violation, inbox a mod, and if they don't respond (and give them a couple of days, cuz they aren't always on here), inbox Dove or Reg.

Funny thing...that last post I had deleted, BigReg told me it was deleted after an anchor request was made for it because some other mod deleted it. Mods are not even on the same page when it comes to the guidelines.

Beef is a lot of posts, we delete it if it gets totally out of hand. If someone threatens that you will go to Hell, inbox a mod or inbox Reg. Seriously. That reply will get 15ed, I would wager.

Moderating GD is hard. Shit happens, and it happens fast. If the deletion of a post makes you curious, inbox a mod, or if they don't respond, inbox Dove or Reg. I can't talk about specific times in the past, cuz I don't know em all. I just know that's the way to get shit solved.

the one time i questioned a deletion...maybe one of the 3 times i've been deleted, was during the whole Katrina thing. the was a Katrina things here post, but I (like many others) made a spinoff of sorts. i can't remember what it was about, but it wasn't 100% Katrina or N.O. related. and i remember that it was deleted, and all i wanted was someone to tell me why. thats all i wanted. finally the mod who deleted it, told me, that it shoulda been in the other posts. when i explained to them that the post was a tangent of sort i believe the response i got was, 'i didn't read it, but it looked like it shoulda been in the other post.' how do you delete without really reading the post? i wasn't mad nor bitter (something a whoooole lotta ya'll need to learn how to be), but it did make me question the whole need for moderation.

personally i think that it deserved its own thread where we as posters could decide if it was relavant or not. if a post is no good or run to the groud, then guess what...it falls off. no need to delete and all that, if people don't wanna talk in your posts then they won't, and the post won't be there.

When it happened, there was like 2 whole page of Katrina-and-N.O.-related posts.

When a mod sees 50 posts that can be consolidated, he doesn't have time to make sure everything in every post is 100% related. If the post had the words "Katrina" "Hurricane" or "New Orleans" in the post, then I can't blame the mod.

the first two or three days, i didn't have too much to say about it different than anyone else.

but as time went on and more things became evident, or course it'd breed more topics of discussion. we just couldn't post about em. we had to keep all topics in a post with 200+ replies.

the mods don't tell you why your post was deleted b/c the folks in Philadelphia at the home office didn't say the mods have to. if the home office changed that rule the mods would act accordingly.

and trust me, those ppl (the 1s in the home office) don't care. like, at all.

take MrThomas's post above. His post during the Katrina times was not specifically about Katrina and was a tangent that he wanted to persue. When I saw it I read it as soemthing entirely different from any other katrina post.

Low and behold it was deleted with no explanation and after a couple days of inboxing...turns out the mod never even read the post...just saw katrina in the title.

Now that comes across as the most lazily haphazard way of doing things that I've ever seen. And to top it off the rules affirm the practice since a reason doesn't have to be given. The first page could be wiped out if a mod felt like it....and it'd be COMPLETELY cool.

asking for an inbox for something that isn't obvious (3rd post) is fine but I mean that rule about not putting a okps name in a post is vague as hell.

I don't know...I do think the root of all this is a) the rules are hidden (links aren't readily available anymore) and b) since the rules aren't explicit its left up to the individual mods which leads to a lot of latitude.

but then again a lot of people stay trying to see what they can get away with.

..while i understand the fact that its not always deemed "fair" or well-received by the general public, there ARE in fact, times when we consolidate a particular topic.

perfect example: hurricane katrina

that event ALONE was so huge, that we (all the mods) actually discussed the fallout, and the effects it had on the boards. after much discussion on the best method of handlin' the influx of traffic, we decided to pull back and hold off from the norm, and allowed everyone a chance to vent/express themselves.

that ENTIRE first week, there was mere choas on the boards surroundin' that topic. we simply let it run its course for AT LEAST FOUR(4) DAYS.

after that initial wkd, we started consolidatin'

when we put up a thread that says "all things _____" or "_____ consolidation" that means EVERYTHING

regardless if YOU feel that what you have to say should receive its own special treatment, the consolidation means either you post it THERE, or run the risk of gettin' it tossed, without explanation.

yes, we know that its cumbersome, and a bit of a nuisance, but its MUCH better than tryin' to sift thru 3 or 4 pages of similar threads.

*not too mention, we received PLENTY of request for consolidation regardin' katrina-related issues

all we're truely sayin' is, start showin' a bit more patience, consideration, and tolerance. we're not here to punish anyone, we're simply tryin' to keep things fluid.

i agree plenty of times the mods are right. but many times they aren't. i've seen mods delete a posters post and then ridicule the poster knowing they can't respond. i've seen mods edit peoples posts and thats not cool, they should either delete it or leave it alone.

There is some validity to the points that Lazy and others have rasised. The truth is that it's not the majority of mods, but there are a couple of bad apples.

We all know authority figures are judged on a different scale... with good reason. And that's the way it should be. A cop who stops someone for a traffic violation and beats them up for no reason is far different from Joe Blow walking down the street and beating up a cat for no reason.

1) It is a small issue, and we should be able to keep it moving in a civilized fashion when shit gets deleted. But if people didnt speak up, we'd accomplish nothing altogether.

2) Folks have said this is an issue, and the general consensus by those in charge is "eat a dick and stop complaining", that wasnt said but it may as well have been. I dont dig that too tough

3) I think it's bullshit how people sporting the symbol publicly get on some tyrant shit, stalking/harrassing people, deleting beef posts long after they jump off but immediately deading the posts of "problem" posters. The well documented agitation by a select few moderators has gone unchecked.

the resolution im offering: Stop deleting posts without an explanation, lock them and reply with the guideline that was violated prior to locking. Delete any subsequent posts complaining about it. If you do delete, explain once why it was deleted and let the issue be dead. By all means ignore someone if they werent satisfied with your one answer. But i think people are owed that much.

the office definitely doesnt care and it seems like the mods defend each other no matter who within that circle is wrong.
