66764, 'The Tipping Point' and GD.
Posted by Quixotic, Tue Aug-30-05 02:05 PM
this is about Malcolm Gladwell's tome, not the last Roots album.

have you read it? in the book, Gladwell asserts that certain cultural phenomena (fashion trends, disease epidemics, crime waves) don't catch on gradually, but explode because the right person (or wrong person, depending on the phenomenon).

this seems to hold true in the universe of Okayplayer too; there was a time when *no* one would have repped the Dips and now...well, you know.

i know we have some amateur social scientists here (bongo, Olu, Lardlad) ; and i was curious as to whether anyone could point to some popular trend *here* that could be traced back to a "Patient Zero."

(or failing that, titties)

"^^^^" was Quez, who is mainly a Lesson poster now.
Cats (including The Doc) saw his hilarious back-and-forths
in The Lesson, took the ball and ran with it.

He was in GD for a minute, dipped out, then dipped out of OKP altogether. Also, Quez is the tipping point for anything Dipset
in OKP...with him it seemed like it was overnight, as well.

66779, well, Dipset.
Posted by Quixotic, Tue Aug-30-05 02:34 PM
i mean, this site used to be a haven for stuck-up music nerds who would have laughed at anyone who said they were serious fan of Cam's cronies, and now?

i think fire has a huge part to play in it, as she carries a good deal of 'weight' in both GD and 'The Lesson'.
66780, i think many of us just grew up though.

shouldnt the peer pressure of the nerds also be contemplated

like..

did fire just ALLOW ppl to feel free to enjoy dipset whereas the 'fitting in' aspect of the 'music nerds' previously didnt allow for this?

or did ppl begin liking dipset just to be like fire?

obviously we would be remiss if we didnt mention quez but i figured id roll with your example

it's like the model chicks who cavort through complex magazine with "rap thugs" like 50 cent.

the same for a music snob who professes their love for less than quality music, to a fault. not to compare the quality of 50 cent's personage to the quality of an average-to-bad group like the diplomats.

I still need to read both 'The tipping point' and 'blink' but I can grasp the basic concept.

Dipset is a pretty good example. As far as I remember, fire was patient zero for that. I was here very sporadically until recently though, so I won't be much use in identifying older trends.

It would be interesting to see where the new breed of conservative thought came from

>It would be interesting to see where the new breed of

though i think most black people are social conservatives, something happened to make it okay for people to more outwardly so (there was a time when people would have at least offered up the perfunctory 'i'm not a racist/homophobe/etc, but...')

I don't think you can divorce okp from the larger society though. As the society around us has become increasingly polarized, that seems to have filtered through unto the boards too.

It could just be that what used to be unpopular opinions are less so these days

66811, RE: I'd like to examine the rise of 'nigga' usage.
Posted by Mash_Comp, Tue Aug-30-05 02:48 PM
it's a struggle because the word is a prominent showpiece in my lexicon. It isn't as if I don't have a vast vocabulary; I do and that wouldn't be questioned.

I think it's an easy word to use. It's an almost-curse word. It has a lot of familiar pain and also reverence attached to it. It flows in "speech", or in our cases onscreen.

The rise of the word doesn't indicate anything save for the fact folks are typing it.

Is it right or wrong? That determination need not be broad. If it's right or wrong for you, deal with it within the confines of your mind.
66812, yeah mayne

Not that nigger wasn't being used in the black community as a term of endearment before then, but NWA took it to the next level.

It opened the flood gates in hip hop. Throw in 2$hort and 2 Live Crew, and hip hop had potty mouth and a way to get to the people.

Your folks mighta had a Redd Foxx album, but they bought it when they was grown, and they grew up in a diff time.

never forget the Dyke Chronicles

as far as dudes... i know that weekend when rush and ahmsofunky descended on the boards the okgay movement became a lot less about politics and more of an equal mixture of politics/entertainment/humor/relating.
66866, yes, definitely Damali. she made me feel comfortable being out here.

i probably would've been out here anyway but she made it easier as did Sankofa, 25, and Pointfive.

From my experience:
Drew is my man and such, but "cursing" wasn't allowed until Drew came in. Elephantdefecation took it to the next next next level with the whole shock posting.

We never used to say fuck, but eff...ish instead of shit.

It's like this...most of the stuff happen here because it was funny at first and then they just ran with it.

-hyperlinking in sigs (RIP)
-FYP, DTS, and such

I mean in a way PI is the son of bfnh (no offense).

Don't quote me on this but Nobi might be the first one to broadcast live before 3030 Radio got off the ground cuz folks were using shoutcast with their reg ip address and not a server (ugh...run on)

upon meeting and getting hit with . a few times

it has a good range of meaning
- silence = you said something very very stupid, read a 'you big dummy' look/of sarcasm/irony/humor
- silence = presence (kinda lurker like)
- silence = you are correct
- silence = i am here, make commentary, i haven't much to say

Truth can verify?

66881, shitting on mexicans
Posted by cindylu, Fri Sep-02-05 02:22 AM
i don't think i would have stuck around as long as i have if there were constantly posts filled with really ignorant and offensive things about mexicans. i mean mexicans in particular because i don't see as much hate against other latino groups.

with that, more hate on racial, ethnic and religious (anti-semitism) groups.

66883, from napster to audio galazy to the seek (and yousendit).
Posted by disorganized, Fri Sep-02-05 02:43 AM
after napster, who started the audio galaxy movement?

when audio galaxy was shut down, i remember some floundering, as people tried different sites, looking for the new napster, the new audio galaxy.

who then led us from ag, to soulseek?

was there a citizen zero, with the usendit music sharing movement on the boards?

i feel safe in being able to take claim for helping set things in motion.

eccentric sent the music to von pea who sent it to me...

i took it, got permission to post it publicly and the buzz started on the boards.

went over LB's heads and slipped a copy of "the listening" to ?uestlove who was already a fan just off of "whatever you say" in may 2002.

got the quote from ?uesto that LB and ABB used in a lot of their promo materials.

not to mention... running a copy of Fruity Loops over to Baseline Studios one afternoon after getting a call from 9th Wonder saying Jay-Z was on his way in.

they call me the architect for a reason...
