the folks at the Superdome adn also something about him not donating money immediatly. His piece de resistance was "George Bush does not care about black people."
65761, "George Bush does not care about black people"
Posted by dsim, Fri Sep-02-05 08:09 PM
that was a direct quote...wow
he also said that america is set up so that its black citizens and poorest citizens suffer, esp. in a situation such as this

he also said that the people who could help are off fighting in Iraq...

and that the reason help was slow was b/c the people affected were both poor and black...

(paraphrasing)

props to Kanye to say on National TV what I was thinking...wow
65762, Yea!
Posted by sweet ruffian, Fri Sep-02-05 08:13 PM
Kanye is speaking his/my mind.

Though it's disheartening to know that they cut him off. That is not okay.
65763, he also said something like
Posted by billionheiress, Fri Sep-02-05 08:14 PM
he would be a hipocrite if he didnt point at himself. he "went shopping before giving a donation" but now hes callin his financial people to donate
65764, i respect him for that

statement. just owning up to your own personal truths.
65765, Speak the truth, Kanye.
Posted by naturalMistic, Fri Sep-02-05 08:14 PM
The network cut real quick to Chris Tucker to get Kanye off the screen, but I'm glad he got that last line in. Thank goodness someone is speaking out.

(and by the way, your "paraphrasing" was much more coherent and came out better than Kanye's nervous words.)

Peace.

kanye's no better than tom cruise when it comes to informing the public on "how it is". both are not as intelligent as they think they are.

i dont think the crappy relief effort in NO stems from the fact that most of the stranded are black. It would be easy to look at the situation and infer that, but I highly doubt it's the case. Really though, who knows? I don't know, and neither does Kanye West. But he's telling everyone on national TV, how it is.

he does have guts though. and he's dead on about the black=looters, white=food collector thing in the media.

If Katrina hit the Hamptons or Martha's Vineyard, you wouldn't see people out there stranded for days at a time and you know it. Why? Because those are White people with money, status, and "clout". Don't CHOOSE to be ignorant.

The mindset that Blacks are nothing but animalistic criminal "looters" stems from the same mindset that that Black life isn't as valuable as White life...therefore if a bunch of poor Black niggers die, what is the REAL loss?

65818, here's the thing...
Posted by greg_soundz, Sat Sep-03-05 09:49 AM

In 2005 things are just a bit more subtle than they were in 1955 or earlier and here's why:

America has ALWAYS had a high tolerance for Black suffering and Black pain (Jesse Jackson said this last night on CNN). Look at all the years it took for slavery to end and then the 100 years of Jim Crow. It takes whitey a looooooooooong time to finally wake up say "this ain't right".

I don't necessarily believe that the powers that be said..."let them niggers suffer for 4 days" but what we saw happen in NO is definitely fueled by the indifference of a white America that sees Black pain and suffering as "normal". If the overwhelming majority of of the disaster victims were white, there would be an immediate connection that would lead to compassion and empathy.

I agree. I suspect that it will be edited and not discussed in the mainstream media. It could be an opportunity to open up a serious dialogue (i.e. w/ Bush and the other Powers That Be) about race and class in America, but I don't think ready for that (if they ever will be).

65902, Here's my typed out transcript:
Posted by Teknontheou, Fri Sep-02-05 08:35 PM
I hate the way they portray us in the media
If you see a black family it says they're looting
If you see a white family it says they're looking for food
And you know it's been five days because most of the people
are black adn even for me
to complain about...I would be a hypocrite because I tried to turn away from the TV because it's too hard
to watch. I've even been shopping before giving a donation so now I'm calling my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can give and just to imagine if I was down there and those are my people down there, so anybody out there that wants to do anything so we can help with the setup the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well off as slow as possible I mean this is, Red Crross is doing everything they can. We already realize alot of the people that coudl help are at war right now fighting another way and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us.

Mike Myers speaks some more

Ryan Burrow - Chicago

During NBC's live broadcast of Concert for Hurricane Relief rapper Kanye West, in what appeared to be an impromptu address, told viewers that National Guardsmen were given the unfair order to shoot at African-Americans on the streets of New Orleans.

In a stumbling, yet defiant statement, West proclaimed that when African-Americans were caught stealing in New Orleans, they were called looters. However when whites were caught, they were just feeding their families.

He was joined by former Saturday Night Live star Mike Myers, who returned to the script, and seemed frustrated by the the rapper's remarks.

West then declared "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Before the rapper could complete his statement, NBC producers cut away.

The hour-long NBC telethon Friday raised money for the Red Cross. Other musicians included Harry Connick Junior, Tim McGraw, and Aaron Neville.

media people just want to say how things are getting better and the situation is getting calmer.

what they arent showing his how people are sick, dead bodies are floating around, women and children are getting raped and junkies are wondering around going through withdrawl and ish.

Benefit Concert Goes From Great To ‘Wow’
Great music goes with an important message, but Kanye West steals show

5:41: Mike Myers and Kanye West are on now, talking about the homeless situation. Kanye brings up an important point, talking about how the media portrays white people as seeking food and blacks as looters. He goes into an impassioned speech about the difficulties blacks are having during the Katrina fallout and in the country in general. Mike Myers is with him at the start.

About 10 seconds in, it's clear he's not reading from the prompter. He stumbles a bit on his points, but most of them get across. The basic message to the government? Stop dragging your feet and help the people down there. Myers gives him a couple "oh my God" looks, and then another when Kanye says "They've given them permission to go down and shoot us."

Myers, clearly stressed, goes into another point about the hurricane and how New Orleans is forever changed. Then Kanye drops the biggest bomb.

"George W. Bush doesn't care about black people," West said. Myers turns to him and clearly has no idea what to say. Then they go to a flabbergasted Chris Tucker.

Kanye was one frustrated man on TV. (And really, I can't do it justice here. Watch the video.)

Not sure what kind of flack Kanye's gonna catch for that last bit, but I'm sure he doesn't care. And good for him to bring up a point on the media's portrayal of blacks that can't be said enough. Not sure if I agree, but it's always good to have someone out there, challenging the media to be as fair as possible.

5:47: Missed most of Aaron Neville's last song, "Amazing Grace," trying to figure out exactly what Kanye said. Still can't believe it. Be sure to check back with MSNBC.com later to see the free video.
66021, YO THAT IS INCREDIBLE

I understand your point about a statement about the poor being able to subsume more people under the heading of disempowerment and such; it is true that the poor in our nation have no power and little access to opportunities. However, issues of race are often obfuscated and lost when conflated with issues of class; the truth is that there is much systematic discrimination in our nation that goes above and beyond poverty issues (and back to slavery; see my piece "Start with Slavery" in several other OkayBoards). People aren't being lynched anymore; modern racism in the United States is something that transcends socioeconomic status, because it links deeply-rooted biases and prejudices about people of color with the effects of our policies, laws, mortgage-lending practices, penal system, education, media, etc., on those people. The media, for instance, probably didn't realize that it is completely ignorant to be calling all those people "refugees"--instead American citizens--because they were black.

It is *very* important to focus on race separately than on class in order to address the gross negligence of people of color in this nation.

i was surprised to see this

these are from a post that somebody put up thanking kanye:

I too am a white woman... U need to take a long look @ who you are supporting. This is NOT a race issue. The fact of the matter is that NOLA is predominantly a black city, so you are going to see more black faces than white. President Bush has failed, but by trusting people like Michael Brown (the director of FEMA) to perform their job duties. KAYNE WEST is an idiot and you are just as bad as him. He was IN NOLA you dumb bitch, get your facts straight. Have you gotten off your fat, middle aged ass and done anything to help your self? THE TRUTH... people like you and KAYNE are whats wrong with this country.

Let me guess, 'ole Jessie put you up to it right? Ohh, that's right, he's too busy buying oil from central America! Go f*** yourself you leftist whore.

from another post:

I AM FROM BATON ROUGE , LOUISIANA AND MY HEART IS HURT AND SAD FOR KANYE! THE PURE FACT IS KANYE HAS A NEW ALBUM COMING OUT AND HE DON'T GIVE A s*** ABOUT ANY OF US DOWN HERE! AS A BLACK WOMAN I AM DISGUSTED . AS A LOUISIANA NATIVE THAT HAS MET AND HEARD THE EVACUEES HORROR STORIES I AM ASHAMED OF KANYE. I HAVE SAT AT MY CHURCH IN THE MIDDLE OF PEOPLE THAT FLED IF ONLY WITH THEIR LIVES . I HAVE CRIED , I HAVE WORRIED, I HAVE BEEN THREW HELL THIS WEEK BUT I THANK GOD FOR THE BRETH I TAKE AND THE PILLOW THAT I LAY ON . THE FOOD THAT I EAT . THE HOUSE THAT I AM SITTING IN . AND THE HELP THAT LOUISIANA HAS RECEIVED HAS BEEN AWESOME BUT THE NEWS DOESN'T SHOW EVERYTHING . SO IF KANYE WANTS TO COME DOWN AND SEE THE AWESOME BROTHERHOOD THAT IS PULSING THREW OUR STATE HE WOULD MOST DEFINITELY THINK OF THE VERBAL DIARRHEA THAT HAS COME OUT OF HIS MOUTH TONIGHT. KANYE TALKS A BIG GAME IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA BUT I DIDN'T SEE HIM OFFERING ONE OF HIS MTV CRIBS FOR SHELTER. GOD BE WITH HIM BECAUSE THE HATE I SAW IN HIS EYES AND THE DEVIL SURROUNDING HIM WAS VERY DISTURBING TO ME TONIGHT. PLEASE SEND US ALL YOUR PRAYERS KANYE INSTEAD OF HATE . GOD BLESS ALL OF US, JINA D

Dear Roc-a-fella
What a dumb idea to give Mrs. West permission to go on the Hurricane fundraiser.
People are dead and all your "star" can do is spew garbage from his mouth about the President.
What help he was. I can bet that people will not donate because of that squatters words.
Does that make you happy?
When you meet with Kanye to discuss his comments on the show tell him that he needs to go down there and deliver food to the victims. If he does, and he wont, then he can say those words.
I hope the thousands of dead haunt him for the rest of his life.
Thanks for reading this post and I hope this is the end of Mrs. West's career.

Kanye West Rips Bush During NBC Concert

Sep 2, 11:02 PM (ET)

By FRAZIER MOORE

NEW YORK (AP) - It began, fittingly enough, with jazz from New Orleans natives Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis. But "A Concert for Hurricane Relief," a heartfelt and dignified benefit aired on NBC and other networks Friday night, took an unexpected turn thanks to the outspoken rapper Kanye West.

Appearing two-thirds through the program, he claimed "George Bush doesn't care about black people" and said America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible."
The show, simulcast from New York on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and Pax, was aired live to the East Coast, enabling the Grammy-winning rapper's outburst to go out uncensored.
There was a several-second tape delay, but the person in charge "was instructed to listen for a curse word, and didn't realize (West) had gone off-script," said NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks.

Immediately after the airing was over, Marks said it was undetermined how much, if any, of the tirade would be included in the taped West Coast feed three hours later.
The host was NBC News' Matt Lauer, who invited viewers to contribute to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by phone or on the Web. Some 18 presenters performed musical numbers or gave information on the tragedy's huge scope.

Louisiana native Tim McGraw teared up as he told Lauer, "I know the citizens that weren't affected by this directly are gonna stand up and do good things for people." He sang two songs, then became the first of the evening's stars to sign a Gibson Les Paul Special guitar to be auditioned online.

Faith Hill, a Mississippi native, sang "There Will Come a Time," with the inspiring lyrics, "The darkness will be gone, the weak shall be strong. Hold on to your faith."
New Orleans son Aaron Neville performed Randy Newman's soulful "Louisiana 1927" with the memorable chorus, "they're trying to wash us away, they're trying to wash us away."
New York governor George Pataki presented the Red Cross with a check for $2.5 million and promised, "This great state will do far more."

"In terms of property damage," said actress Hilary Swank, "the estimate is at least $26 billion in insured losses and perhaps twice that in uninsured losses over a 90,000-square-mile area - approximately the size of Kansas."
Other speakers included Lindsay Lohan, Eric LaSalle, Glenn Close, Richard Gere, John Goodman and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Comedian Mike Myers was paired with West for a 90-second segment that began with Myers speaking of Katrina's devastation. Then, to Myers' evident surprise, West began a rant by saying, "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."
While allowing that "the Red Cross is doing everything they can," West - who delivered an emotional outburst at the American Music Awards after he was snubbed for an award - declared that government authorities are intentionally dragging their feet on aid to the Gulf Coast. Without getting specific, he added, "They've given them permission to go down and shoot us."

After he stated, "George Bush doesn't care about black people. Please call _" the camera cut away to comedian Chris Tucker.
Concluding the hour a few minutes later, Lauer noted that "emotions in this country right now are running very high. Sometimes that emotion is translated into inspiration, sometimes into criticism. We've heard some of that tonight. But it's still part of the American way of life."

Then the entire ensemble performed "When the Saints Go Marching In."
In a statement, NBC said, "Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him, and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks.
"It would be most unfortunate," the statement continued, "if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion."

Friday's program was the first of several TV benefits planned through next weekend.
NBC and the five other major commercial broadcast networks, along with PBS, plan to unite next Friday for a special. The same night, BET will air a benefit. And on Saturday, Sept. 10, the MTV networks will air a special.

**call to action in support of Kanye West and the Victims of katrina**

---The Situation----

as u know, iont even listen to music like that & frankly I didnt think to kindly of "Golddiggers", but I respect Kanye's right to make the song.

and, I respect and support him in what he said during the "A Concert for Hurricane Relief" because he was right.

there is no good excuse why federal relief did not get to the victims sooner.... there is only one reason:

"George Bush does not care about Black (or poor) people"

--- The Target ----

We must quickly register full support of Kayne West's statement.
We need to ensure that Kanye West is not at all black-balled in any way and is congratulated for his bravery, honesty and forthrightness.

--- The Plan---

Each person reading this post must email a statement simply indicating that "we support Kanye's Statement" to all of the following:

us senator: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

It's amazing how as late as yesterday everyone is around here talking shit about Kanye, saying he's selfish and arrogant, now everyone is up in here praising him as a hero because he's said the things every other celebrity has been saying. My how things can change in an instant.

Every other minute yall bitching about something Kanye's done, whether complaining about not getting an award to ranting on magazines about how good he is or the rant at the Toronto radio station a couple of weeks ago.

When he did Live Aid, I didn't say anything, because celebrities ranting about Bush has been a normal thing. But now he goes on television and does the same thing when this was meant to be a major fundraiser to get help to those families.

Now, how many people you think heard what he said and told NBC to go fuck off? Kanye's grandstanding didn't help one black person in New Orleans; it only helped him gain notoriety. Even in the face of all this it's still all about Kanye.

I don't recall anyone else with Kanye's status saying that Bush doesn't care about blacks. I think people are reacting to the fact that he took such a chance. It shows that he's not that concerned about being commercial.

Why are you worried about most (aka white )people and who they know? The point is, he' s famous enough to be asked to be on a national syndicated telethon, and he spoke his mind.
66075, Speaking his mind at the expense of others.
Posted by Expertise, Sat Sep-03-05 12:07 AM
On top of that, he didn't even get the "looting vs. finding" shit right, as he was only repeating a false story.

He's sold many records. Good for him. I think he's a great rapper. But he's still a rapper, and when it comes down to it, he set himself up to gain. Not the Red Cross, not NBC, nor anyone in New Orleans. If he wanted to speak his mind, he should have picked a better venue to do so.

It's a hurricane. You're not going to prevent death and suffering. The roads and overpasses are dangerous to drive on, you had people looting and raising havoc in that city, and it does take time to get things done.

Kanye isn't speaking for anyone but himself. He's not going to suffer from this incident because hip hop fans are mostly Bush haters anyway. It's the Red Cross that has to suffer, as they now have to deal with the complaints and backlash from this incident.

Kanye has a recognizeable image and he's using it to voice the concerns of his people. I've had the same thoughts pass through my head but that doesn't mean Bush will ever hear from me personally. He can't escape the allegations when they takes on a celebrity/notoriety of their own and people want a good response/action to take place from the powers that be. He didn't hurt anyone by not sticking to the script and speaking from his heart. I'm actually relieved that he can still think for himself and not cater to TV execs who also get ratings off of this coverage.

Also who is to say that he isn't hurt by what happened? I don't have family in that area but I know folks from down there. It affects me. He put his rep on the line and who knows what he is going to do tomorrow as far as a response. He didn't plan for the Hurricane to hit when his album drops. Jus' had to vent a bit.

I never said Kanye isn't troubled about what's going on there, but there's no question that he is misinformed about what was going on there, and he used the event to place himself into the spotlight.

He isn't risking anything. As I said before, hip hop fans are mostly far left anyway. He'll probably receive a boost in sales because of this stunt.

66123, This is really a partisan issue (for you anyway)
Posted by M2, Sat Sep-03-05 08:02 AM

You're an unabashed partisan who has nothing better to do than to launch ad hominem attacks at the left and pretend that any attack against the Right is a near criminal act.

So your claim is that what Kanye said detracts from the victims plight and will somehow result in less donations........yet, you're mad about people donating to move-on since they're a leftist organization, instead of just being happy that someone else is raising money for the victims.

Your motives/perspective is quite clear and you're not fooling anyone.

If Kanye tore into the left - you'd be clapping, this we know, as thats your real issue, that someone criticized the right.

Hence the reason you got your panties in a bunch that people are donating to Move-on.

Kanye spoke from a place of real emotion, that's apparent to anyone watching AND he's smart enough to realize that by not sticking to the script, he's potentially hurting his own career.

Doing something that will hurt you is NOT self-serving, he just expressed what he felt, it may have been wrong, it may have been right - but that's all it was.

If all Kanye will be to America is just another rapper - than his words aren't going to impact their decision to give money.

Judging by the response on the boards, it may be the impetus that causes others to give MORE money.

Regardless, it's VERY hard to take you seriously at all in any sort of political discussion as your stance is to always ad hominem attack the left and then to defend the right no matter what the facts are.

I figured I'd point that out since we're speaking of clowns.

All I know is - our military can be anywhere in the world from the US within 18 hours if the shit hits the fan.

It shouldn't take 5 days to get to New Orleans, so criticizing the Govt. and/or feeling that maybe they don't care, isn't an all together illogical conclusion. It doesn't matter what sort of disaster was expected, the calvary can be mustered faster than in 120 hours.

We all know Expertise isn't even a real conservative so much as a toady and an apologist for the Republican party. There's no independence of thought, simply a pathological need to be the biggest possible synchophant.

as for kanye, the idea that this is self promotion is ridiculous. This is an era where 50 Cent and Eminem are the two biggest selling rappers and anything that reeks of political commentary is buried by the label or the radio. kanye is in for a world of shit from the mainstream media for daring to disrupt the commerce machine to exert his right as a citizen to speak about his government. how in the world is this going to help his soundscans in north carolina or iowa?

and as for disrupting a fundraiser, motherfucker, please. this is not an apolitical issue. it was clear by tuesday how bad this situation was going to be, and it took until friday for there to be a successful response. this is a massive, tragic logistical failure by the federal government, and bush has stacked the top posts with his people. i'm not even going to get into the fact that the Gulf Coast could have used the money, troops, and helicopters that we're currently squadering in Iraq.

the point is, how many people died or got sick or got the message that the United States does not, in fact, care about their suffering is those 72 hours? Kanye didn't say Bush hates minorities. he said that when Bush gets up in the morning, the last thing on his mind i black people. he's clearly demonstrated that. he didn't care. he was on vacation and couldn't be disturbed. his cabinet of ideologues clearly hadn't prepared for this scenario for a second even though it's been forecasted for how many years, showing that they, in fact, did not care enough about the City of New Orleans and its residents.

but I don't see this as primarily a failure of bush's ideology. what's becoming painfully obvious is that this Administration is inept. they cannot accomplish their policy aims because they are pathetic at managing logistics. they don't have enough weapons in iraq. they destablized two countries and the most dangerous region in the world because they let their ideology massively outstrip their planning. they pushed through a tax cut based on ideology with no idea that situations like this would occur and that we might need to finance relief efforts. and now they've let New Orleans descend into anarchy. bush should consider hiring people in the future with a couple fewer letters of recommendation from the heritage foundation but that actually know how to make the trains run on time. this didn't have to be political, but bush's extreme ideology has made everything political. his pursuit of his ideological goals has made him and his Administration blind to basic management issues

All of you in this thread sit here and claim I'm such a "toady" (whatever the hell that is) and I don't use independent or original thought. Well how original is it for Kanye to yell "George Bush doesn't care about black people."? Other celebs have been saying that and worse since he announced he was running for president. How orginal is it to have 500 posts on a discussion board to cosign what this kat says? Especially since most of the posters talked shit about Kanye up to this moment. Yeah; how original.

Kanye isn't going to be hurt by this no more than Jadakiss was when he claimed Bush was behind 9/11. In fact, afterwards Jadakiss turned around and created a remix to take advantage of the press he'd gotten from the orginial single. Kanye will do the same, as he'll comment on the fundraiser either as an additional track to sell with Late Reg, as a remix on a current single, or on his next album.

As far as the government's response, this is nothing new. You have to go through protocols and guidelines just like we always did. In fact, this same thing happened in South Florida with Hurricane Andrew in 91, when there was a slow response after that disaster. I don't like it, and I would have liked to see Guardsmen get into NO and had them stop the looting and save more people than what they did.

Therefore, collecting all of the Guardsmen or active servicemen isn't as simple as just telling them "Get ready; you're going into Louisiana" and packing them onto the bus or whatever and moving in. There are limitations placed on the military in regards to what they can do inside the country, and they have to follow protocol and chain of command.

66131, Did it take 5 days for the troops to show up after 9/11?
Posted by M2, Sun Sep-04-05 02:24 AM

No.

Our Military folks in the US can be anywhere in the world, on the ground and ready to take on the mission at hand in 18 hours or less.

For our elite troops, that's their operational mandate.

The Damn Coast Guard can be in action faster than that as far as domestic emergency, and they're part of the DHS now, along with FEMA.

It didn't take five days for our troops to help after the Tsunami either.

Now if we can react to the Tsunami and 9/11 and Forest Fires in the Northwest (My own personal experience) in faster than 5 days, than they can do the same in New Orleans.

They should've been mobilized or put on standby as soon as the storm started moving accross the ocean towards New Orleans, just like I was when they thought forest fires MIGHT cause a problem.

It's called basic readiness.

They've done in your own state, get the troops ready and stage them so if the worse happens they're ready to be quickly deployed.

There is no excuse for this, if it takes five days there are only two answers:

-The System is broken

-Someone fucked up.

Even Bush has said that the response was unacceptable.

Stop being defensive just because you think the liberals are picking on your beloved conservatives.

66132, come up with a new gimmick, M2.
Posted by Expertise, Sat Sep-03-05 04:40 PM
It's like, every time someone says something you disagree with, you yell "partisan! partisan! partisan!" If you can't come up with a logical argument, simply don't post until you come up with something better.

But hey; I'm the one with the ad hominem attacks, right.

The difference between the Red Cross and MoveOn.org is obvious to anyone that has a clue: MoveOn.org is a political organization designed to bring down a president. The Red Cross isn't political. They simply want to help people.

If this was on a MoveOn.org fundraiser, you know what? I probably wouldn't have said a word, considering the obvious leanings of the organization. Kanye's rant would have been expected; hell, it would probably been demanded. But the Red Cross isn't. And last night their donation calls had to be mixed in with complaints. After all; they didn't release a statement for nothing.

If MoveOn.org is creating a charity, that's fine...I don't care. You can give your money to them if you want. I'm not, but if that's how people want to do with their money, go ahead. However, you cannot deny the difference between The Red Cross and political organizations. Kanye should have chose a better venue in order to spread misinformation, and not at the expense of an organization that's actually trying to help.

Maybe Kanye did speak from conviction...okay. And I'm sure that there were other celebs involved that didn't say a word, yet agreed. However, they realized what the objective of the fundraiser was. It wasn't to make it a political discussion or rant. It was to help the Red Cross bring in more donations.

Kanye definitely won't suffer from this; he's in the news today, his sales will receive a boost, and hip hop fans are mostly leftist, which means they will agree with his views. A perfect case of opportunism from a guy that has a history of thinking about himself first.

As it is - you didn't break down my argument and show how it is illogical.

Thus proving my point in the first place.

>Cross isn't political. They simply want to help people.

You just proved my point.........AGAIN.

The purpose of the Moveon.org action related to the banner on this page is to raise money for the Kitrina victims, nothing more, nothing less.

"Moveon.org is a political organization designed to bring down a president"

You just revealed your partisanship by acting as if Moven.org is automatically a pernicious organization due to wanting someone with a different political viewpoint in power.

The GOP is a political organizationd designed to crush the Democrats, numerous political organizations and individuals were involved in working to make sure Kerry didn't get elected, other democrats don't get elected AND were involved in trying to take Clinton down.

But that's cool - you don't have any problems with them.

The GOP has numerous people who work in the media, some claim to be journalists, others are just pundits and talking heads like Rush, Savage, Hannity, et al - these people are working to take the left as a political ideology.

In fact, in your imagination you imagine yourself moving towards that yourself with your little blog.

Why is that perfectly fine, why don't you EVER criticize those individuals and organizations, despite them having the SAME objective of Moveon.org.

Simple.

You agree with them.

Don't act as if you're just against moveon.org just because you find any group trying to take down a president as ignoble. The truth, you don't want to anyone criticizing or trying to take action to keep the people you agree with out of power.

Grow some balls and admit it, your actions are partisan by definition.

It's just that simple.

Your lack of credibility is due to your own inability to forge a logical argument, your blindness to basic logic and refusal to accept any facts that don't support conservatives.

Your actions are the definition of partisanship, look it up.

>If this was on a MoveOn.org fundraiser, you know what? I
>probably wouldn't have said a word, considering the obvious

Complaints from jack-asses like you who feel they don't have hear opinions they don't like, but it's perfectly fine for people on the left to hear opinons THEY don't like.

Like I said - anyone who decides not to help the victims because of what Kanye said, is a jack-ass, pure and simple.

>If MoveOn.org is creating a charity, that's fine...I don't

No, you do care because you expressed anger about it earlier.

Again, the constant constridictions and hypocrisy.

Yes, there is a difference between the two organizations, but in this case, their only goal is to raise money for the victims, nothing more, nothing less.

But here you are bitching and moaning about a banner ad.

>Maybe Kanye did speak from conviction...okay. And I'm sure
>that there were other celebs involved that didn't say a word,
>yet agreed. However, they realized what the objective of the
>fundraiser was. It wasn't to make it a political discussion

>donations.

He said what he felt instead of reading a script and doing so will probably hurt him in the short to medium term (at least) - in the end, it's unlikely to bring in fewer donations.

Unless the nation is populated by jack-asses who make their decisions with respect to charitable donations based on what they think Kanye will say.

>Kanye definitely won't suffer from this; he's in the news
>today, his sales will receive a boost, and hip hop fans are

>perfect case of opportunism from a guy that has a history of

>

You just said that Hip-Hop fans are "mostly leftist" meaning that some will disagree and may not support him anymore.

Not to mention he could face a media backlash.

On the other hand, it did bring the event more publicity, so more donations could result.

Truth be told, there isn't any quantative evidence that proves it one way or another.

66134, RE: Kanye's a clown.
Posted by MixedBytheGodsin83, Sat Sep-03-05 10:03 AM
I disagree that "every other celebrity" has been saying the same thing. The United States has a really bad habit of avoiding open dialogue about race and racial discrimination. Systematic racial discrimination is prevalent in our society, but since people are not in visible chains or getting lynched anymore, most people think everything has been fine since the Civil Rights Act of 1965. The truth is that people of color--Latinos, African-Americans, Blacks, Native Americans, Asian-Americans--face discrimination in every facet of our society. But people don't want to talk about it because it doesn't behoove the power structure to do so. And race and class--although they intersect--are distinct. It would be shortsighted to chalk up our government's flaccid response to this tragedy as having to do with class alone--"because they're poor". Those people were called refugees because they were mostly black. Inordinate media emphasis on looting and crime (which was likely attributable to a small percentage of the population there) had to do with the racial composition thereof. The recurring misallocation of funds away from fixing a levee system our government knew was doomed to failure, and the lack of steps to prepare for a disaster of this scale (predicted in earlier reports of the likeliest disasters to afflict the U.S.) has to do, again, with the racial composition of the area. So it is not insensitive, immature, unpatriotic, or selfish to say that "George Bush doesn't care about black people". The actions of the Bush administration before, during, and after this disaster indicate precisely that.

The media (the white media, i might add) is portraying the blacks as the "looters" and the white folks as the "finders". That's disgusting, bigoted, racist and shows the inherent stereotypes that and racial prejudice that white believe that blacks steal, murder, rape. etc. etc. I don't know who you are, but for you to disagree with facts is appalling, and who cares if Kanye is doin this for himself, the point of the matter is that he is pointing out subconscious feelings of white america towards the lives of poor black folk. If this was in beverly hills or some other middle to upper class white area, it would not have taken five days for that to happen, and if you can't realize that i would have to say that you are probably one of the most ignorant people on the face of this planet, regardles if you are black or white

That took balls. You could tell he was nervous to say the shit, but it was the truth. My biggest problem is the comparisons to Florida last year. When that area got devastated by 3 Hurricane's Bush was down there FAST getting many photo ops. Aid was never even an issue, it just so happened that was a huge swing state and Bush's brother runs it. My sister claims Bush won the state the way he appeared to help out through the crisis.

NO has been shit on, just plain shit on, this is fucking America, we can't get these people aid? We can't organize buses for those without transportation? Bush has already fucked up, the picture of him looking out the plane window illustrates the issue.

Back to Kanye, you really think this was all about him? It seemed he had something to say, it was obviously fucking with him.
66176, Proud of him but

Before people jump on my back, I wanna say that I'm very impressed and happy that he made that statement. You could tell from how his voice was cracking that it took a lot for him to do it. But Kanye is still Kanye...

SO... the mayor and the prodominantly black leaders of NOLA don't like black people either because they aren't handing stuff out too?

to commit what may be career suicide, is his belief that it isn't.

he called out vibe in a song, they put him back on the cover.

he thinks he cna keep doing it.

no one else truly believes they will eat tomorrow and everyday purely off of their talent no matter who they piss off.

I never said his words were arrogant. but a man who wasn't foolishly self confident, could never have done what he did.

why can TO go across the middle and not worry about the safety? cuz he's supremely talented and traind, but so are a lot of other guys, but he also has complete and total belief that he is the best wide reciever on the planet. same thing.

There's furor over Kanye's comments...yet I haven't heard anything about Bush's press conference after touring the devasation where he expresses concern for Senator Trent Lott's multimillion dollar mansion that's gone?!!? Poor Trent Lott! Like he doesn't have a place in Washington and probably somewhere else to go! Thousands of others don't.

My ire is off the meters right now.
66225, arrogance or not, there was honest emotion in that speech
Posted by wickenching, Sat Sep-03-05 08:45 AM
Either he's a great actor, or you're hating if you think this was self serving... he put his own failings on this forth about how he also didn't care enough in the first place so you had a chance to put his comments in perspective, then he came out with what he felt and what are arguably some very true assertions. That's gotta take courage, there's nothing about that broadcast that indicated to me that he was sure of himself.

He came out with what he seems to honestly think, consequences be damned, obvious doubts in his mind pushed aside. I wish more people in the media could be this bold with what they really think.

Posted by sweet ruffian, Sat Sep-03-05 01:47 PM
Money is one. Numbers is another. For NBC the numbers directly affect their money. Corporations listen to critisicm because they figure for every 1 person who says something, there are 100 people thinking the same thing. In my company (multi-billion dollar), we have the top 5 consumer complaints POSTED constantly.

Please don't think your voice means nothing. Think about it, if you had to give one person a penny it would mean nothing to you. But, if you had to give 100,000 people a penny you would feel it in your pockets. It's simple math, add your voice to the pot.

I for one have asked them not to edit what he said. Even if they do, they still know for their many news channels that there are people who don't believe he "ruined the telethon" which is a spin they might try to pull.

i don't think my voice means nothing, but this plan doesn't really have a point....what do expect NBC to do with the info that some of it's viewers support Ye?? they gonna say "the people agree with West." on the air?? no....they gonna stimulate dialogue about black folks believin bush don't like em?? no....they may do a survey later showin that bush's approval rating is down wit blacks or americans in general, but who doesn't now that?? sure, they'll know you support ye, many of them already know that alotta people agree, but what do you think they'll do witht htat info other than "post" a memo in the offices???

I definately commend Kanye on having the rawness to speak from heart in a situation like that, especially with the possible consequences. The only thing is that it may have drawn attention away from the main objective which was to get money to those who needed help.

The thing about that is: how many times would he get that type of platform to voice his views and what he believes to be the views of the masses to such a wide audience? On top of that it was an audience that was probably 30% comprised of peoeple who don't watch any show or program that Kanye would be on (Oprah and isht like that excluded).

Point bein' it was probably the only opportunity he would ever have to say something like that where it would spread so rampantly. But was it worth drawing attention away from the main thing which is for the people to help these black victims that Bush "doesn't care about"? (not a cynical statement, I'm seriously wondering about that)
66257, Why is this SUCH a big deal?
Posted by Mica, Sat Sep-03-05 02:06 PM
If he is saying what everyone said before, and what everyone knows, and what everyone can see from the evidence put in front of us (as a poster said, 'do you think he would let white people be stranded on top of a building for 5 days?'), then why is this such a big great thing that he said it?

Because he did it when a whole lot of people were watching?

66258, Because it's Kanye. If it were Michael Eric Dyson,
Posted by ZooTown74, Sat Sep-03-05 02:23 PM
beside the fact that it would be a long preacher's sermon, it would also be boring, because he's old. Kanye's a "rebel" who says what he feels, and a lot of people, love that, especially on here. They believe that he's somehow being "subversive" by saying what he wants and always appearing on the edge of "going off" on someone, and showing his charisma as he does it.

Last night was the first time in a long time where I actually gave him props for doing something that was genuinely "off the cuff," as opposed to the usual "I'm going to say something 'emotional' and 'edgy' and 'from the soul' in order to sell records."

Kanye wasn't trying to sell any records last night.

it'd still mean a lot if michael eric dyson said it because of the venue in which it wld have been said (on live, national tv, uncensored, when the focus should be 'kum bah yah' instead of on telling the ugly truth).

it's a big deal because kanye's an entertainer. actually, scratch that--it's a big deal because of the risks he runs as an entertainer, doing what he did.

but it's also a big deal because kanye's an entertainer and because of what that means in terms of what he's got leeway to say.

entertainers, if they want to keep their endorsements, fan bases, etc, have to watch what they say publically when it comes to political matters, especially now. as such, its VERY rare that an entertainer would risk so much to say something so controversial, especially when it's a truth the the lot of america doesn't want to face. white folk don't wanna face the fact that race is working here, that their president may not have done all he could have when he should have done it.

so, if ANYBODY would have gotten on stage and said exactly that, it would be a huge deal. but the fact that perhaps, some cld argue, entertainers are even under more pressure to keep their mouths shut on major issues like this, is what makes it more remarkable. he put a LOT on the line to say what sincerely needed to be said.

and because of this fact, maybe kanye saying it does create more of a stir than m.e.d. saying it. but it STILL would have been a big thing if michael eric dyson said it. and plus, more niggas know kanye than m.e.d., which is another reason ppl are in such a stir. kanye's got more to lose than m.e.d., in my opinion, who has more leeway as an 'academic intellectual' to say things like this.

doing what kanye did could very likely mean career suicide, though i don't see it happening with him. but do you remember the dixie chicks? remember the rage, the protest, and eventual apology? they didn't wanna lose that money. kanye doesn't seem to be worried about there here, and if that's true, it shows that dude got some blinding courage.

that's why it's a big deal.

Makes sense.

I guess entertainers want to keep all fans, and there is that risk that all the republican fans of Kanye could immediately stop, since he is talking about their fearless leader like that.

And in an age where money is everything, and to be really commercial is the best thing to shoot for, the voluntarily aim to lose like a good portion of your fanbase is admirable.

Thanks for the explanation. :)

Entertainers are the people in his country that criticize the president the most, and often the most harshly. So you can't say he was endangering his career by saying that shit. If anything, it'll probably help him land a major movie role. Celebrities say this kind of stuff all the time, but millions of people see their movies and buy their albums. And the Dixie Chicks had all that shit happen because they are country music artists, and most country music fans are Republican. People know that Kanye doesn't like Bush when they buy his records, and most of them feel the same way. Personally, I consider myself politically conservative, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna stop bumping LR just because I don't agree with something he says.
66263, but in times of crisis, extreme ones, like this
Posted by Trace, Sat Sep-03-05 08:14 PM
and extreme ones like the war

the last thing the government or the larger populace of 'patriotic' people (read: the white republican/conservative middle class) wants is people dissenting. they'd rather people ignore the truth and put aside their personal politics until the sitation is resolved; the last thing it/they want is to be openly criticized, especially when they're doing a bad job of handling the situation.

i know that artists and entertainers are quick to criticize the government.

but when they do so at such critical times--in times of war and national disaster--it becomes a problem. if the dixie chicks had chosen any other time to say what they said about the president, i guarantee the backlash wldn't have been so swift.

kanye has ALWAYS said bad stuff abt the administration, but last night's comment was the dangerous one because he said it when the popular consensus is support rather than go against the grain.

and he did it so publically.

that's what makes it unique.

The Show Didn’t Benefit by Censors
By Robert Hilburn
As we enter the celebrity telethon phase of the Katrina tragedy, NBC's "A Concert for Hurricane Relief" stands as a blueprint for its own kind of institutional failure.

By censoring Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West's remarks critical of President Bush during its West Coast feed of the program Friday night, the network violated the most moving and essential moment in an otherwise sterile, self-serving corporate broadcast.

"It would be most unfortunate," the network said in a statement defending its action, "if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion."

Excuse me, but whose tragedy is this: NBC's or America's?

NBC may have been nervous about West's comments, including the notion that America and its president are unresponsive to the needs of the poor. But you can be sure those remarks would have been cheered more than anything else in the program by the black parents and children still trapped in the New Orleans Convention Center and the Superdome if they had been able to hear them.

The line NBC stopped us from hearing on the West Coast: "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

The puzzling thing is why NBC axed that, but allowed another provocation, potentially more disturbing, to stay in: "We already realized a lot of the people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way, and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us."

West was apparently referring to the National Guard troops who were sent to New Orleans to help the flood victims and stop the looting.

The show was aired live on the East Coast, where West's full comments were heard.

There was a several-second tape delay, but the person in charge "was instructed to listen for a curse word and didn't realize had gone off script," NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks told Associated Press.

Whether we agree or disagree with West's impassioned riff on media and government racism, the network's relentless self-promotion was by far the more offensive part of the broadcast.

It started with a welcome from Bob Wright, the chief executive of NBC Universal, which was followed by thoughts from another chief executive, Capital One's Richard D. Fairbank.

Why Fairbank?

Capital One "underwrote" the telethon, which makes you immediately ask: Was his appearance part of the underwriting deal? The fact that the question comes up at all shows you how wrong that move was.

Then we had Matt Lauer, perhaps the most famous male face of NBC east of Jay Leno, host the program, and "feel-good" scenes of NBC anchor Brian Williams walking the streets with New Orleans musician Harry Connick Jr.

Surely Connick, also known for his appearances on NBC's "Will & Grace," knew his way around without Williams' help.

The censorship of West only added to the insult.

West, a black artist who is arguably the dominant creative force in mainstream popular music right now, isn't one of the thug-life rappers who might use a moment on a telethon for shock or exploitation purposes.

The most respected newcomer in rap, he has refocused interest on socially conscious themes, as did Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder in R&B decades ago. There's even a spiritual undercurrent in his biggest hit, "Jesus Walks."

His provocative on-air comments come as his new album, "Late Registration," is expected to enter the national sales chart at No. 1 this week.

Because he is widely seen by critics and industry tastemakers as an influential spokesman for the American black experience, you could feel the strain of his attempt to fulfill that role — to step beyond the generic comments of other celebrities Friday to reflect on the horror being experienced by the flood victims.

You could disagree with his views, but you couldn't deny his passion.

"I hate the way they portray us in the media," West began his remarks during the hourlong program, on which he was one of several celebrities, including Hilary Swank and Leonardo DiCaprio, who spoke between musical numbers. "If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."

West, 28, who attended Chicago State University before entering the music business, seemed to be talking extemporaneously, so he might have chosen his words differently if he'd had time to write them down.

But maybe not.

There's the possibility of more unscripted passion breaking through this week as NBC and the other networks, along with PBS, join forces Friday for another special. BET will air a separate benefit the same night. And the MTV networks will present a special Saturday.

In planning these events, the executives should look at tapes of "America: A Tribute to Heroes," the two-hour special that was carried by all the major television networks and dozens of cable channels shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The focus that night was entirely on the music: no commercials, no audience, not even introductions as the singers, including Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young, took their turns onstage. It was a night totally without showbiz ego.

The worst example of telethon-type coverage recently was MTV's commercial-packed coverage of the Live 8 concerts in July, in which there was so little respect for the music that cameras frequently cut away from key performances for inane MTV chatter. On Friday NBC, at least, limited the commercials to one: for NBC.

66287, Fantastic.

A flood of words
BY JIM DEROGATIS POP MUSIC CRITIC

Excerpt:

...But with his comments on Friday, West emerged as its new political firebrand, with a larger audience and more access to the mainstream than any rapper since Public Enemy's Chuck D, who declared in the late '80s that rap music "is the black CNN."

Like Chuck D, West grew up in a middle-class family that did not turn its back on the harsh realities of life in the ghetto but viewed political action and education as the paths to reform. His mother, Donda West, recently retired as chairwoman of the English Department at Chicago State University. His father, Ray West, is a former Black Panther active in the South Shore neighborhood, now serving as a Christian marriage counselor.

Unlike Public Enemy, which was famously criticized for embracing some of the anti-Semitic views of the Nation of Islam, West's beliefs reflect those of millions of mainstream Americans strong on family values, the merits of hard work and Christian teachings. Indeed, the message of "Jesus Walks," the phenomenal hit from his 2004 album "The College Dropout," is that anything is possible with the help of Christ, a theme that allies him with many of Bush's core supporters.

But Friday, West's statements were much closer to those being made by critics of the Bush administration from across the racial and political spectra. And while he is being criticized by many on the right -- and will no doubt pay a price with some lost album sales and less radio play in more conservative markets -- he did Americans a service by putting the issue on the table for national debate.

Perhaps the most striking evidence of this came on Sunday during CNN's "Late Edition" when host Wolf Blitzer quoted West when asking Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson whether the response to Hurricane Katrina has been racist. Thompson, a Democrat, said the government had failed and "someone has to be held accountable." He cited the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

The most revealing part of the exchange, however, was the fact that Thompson mistook the comments from West as a statement from Princeton University professor, theologian, author and activist Dr. Cornel West. In one fell swoop, the rapper and college dropout has earned a place in the front ranks of this country's best-known and most respected African-American activists.
