Chicago P.D. is investigating a brutal attack on Empire star Jussie Smollett. The 36-year-old actor and singer was jumped by two white men late Monday. It is being treated as a possible hate crime.

“Overnight, the Chicago Police Department received a report of a possible racially-charged assault and battery involving a cast member of the television show Empire,” police confirmed to Yahoo. “Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime. Detectives are currently working to gather video, identify potential witnesses and establish an investigative timeline. The victim is fully cooperating with investigators and we ask anyone with information about this incident to contact Area Central Detectives at 312-747-8382.”

If anyone has information and wishes to report it anonymously, they can do so here.

TMZ has disturbing details of the altercation. After arriving home in Chicago from New York, Smollett was hungry and went to a Subway around 2 A.M. As he was leaving, one of the men purportedly yelled, “Aren’t you that f***ot Empire n***er?”

The two white men were apparently wearing ski masks and attacked Smollett, who tried to fight back. They put a rope around his neck, poured bleach on him and as they left allegedly yelled, “This is MAGA country.” The Fox star was treated for a fractured rib at Northwestern Memorial and discharged Tuesday.

Chicago P.D. confirms to Yahoo the two unknown offenders approached Smollett “and gained his attention by yelling out racial and homophobic slurs towards him. The offenders began to batter the victim with their hands about the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim.”

Police also confirm one of the offenders wrapped a rope around Smollett’s neck. The actor is now in “good condition.” Yahoo has not independently confirmed whether the MAGA quote was yelled.

It appears the attack might have been premeditated. According to photos obtained by the blog ThatGrapeJuice.Net, Smollett received a threatening note eight days ago. It was addressed to Fox Studios in Chicago with cut out letters spelling, “You will die black f**.”

Yahoo reached out to a representative for Smollett but did not immediately receive a response.

On Empire, the actor plays Jamal Lyon, the son of Lucious (Terrence Howard) and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) who is gay. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in 2015, Smollett said that while he identifies as being gay, he prefers to keep his personal life private.

“It was really important to me to make sure that it got across that there is no closet,” Smollett explained. “But I have a home and that is my responsibility to protect that home.”

He continued, “So that’s why I choose not to talk about my personal life. But there is without a doubt, no closet that I’ve ever been in, and I just wanted to make that clear. But it was most important for me to make that clear to you on your show at this time in the world. And that’s where I’m at.”

Well-wishes are pouring in for the beloved entertainer. GLAAD reached out to both Fox and Smollett’s team offering support.

Andy Cohen called the attack “vile.”

This sounds like a script to an episode I must have missed.

The language, the noose, the bleach, it was an Arctically cold Chicago night (2AM, no less).

Jussie has always seemed really intelligent and a like a good person, so I really "want" this to be as true as it's being initially reported because I don't want to believe that he would be a party to a hoax. That's why I'm choosing to go with the idea that whoever did this knew him, or they were sent by someone who knew him.

Chicago police say they have arrested two brothers in connection with the possible hate crime involving “Empire” star Jussie Smollett.

“Interrogations will resume today with the two individuals and their attorney,” department spokesman Anthony Guglielimi said in a statement to The Times on Friday.

The men — who are only being identified as two Nigerian brothers — were initially being questioned as persons of interest in the attack and are now considered potential suspects, Guglielimi said.

“Detectives have probable cause that they may have been involved in an alleged crime and we are working to corroborate the allegations and investigative timeline as our investigation continues,” Guglielimi said. But they have not been charged in the Jan. 29 incident.

Guglielmi again denied reports alleging that the attack was a hoax and reiterated that Smollett is being treated as a victim.

“While we haven’t found any video documenting the alleged attack, there is no evidence to say that this is a hoax,” Guglielmi said. “The alleged victim is being cooperative at this time and continues to be treated as a victim, not a suspect.”

Police have been questioning the men since they were picked up by officers at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Wednesday after returning to the city from Nigeria, the Associated Press reported. Police served a search warrant at their home on Thursday.

At least one of the men worked on “Empire,” but Guglielmi did not know in what capacity, the AP said.

Smollett recounted his ordeal on “Good Morning America” on Thursday and again said that his attackers yelled racial and homophobic slurs at him, put a rope around his neck and poured a chemical on him.

The details did sound a little on the nose and "too perfect," but I would've thought the same thing if you had told me a bunch of fascists were holding a tiki torch rally at a Confederate statue chanting "Jews will not replace us." There's probably something to be said for waiting for the facts to come in, but that's also something that's become co-opted over the years. How many times do you see a story about a victim of police violence with a dozen Serious Whites in the comments saying that "we need to wait for ALL sides of this story to come out," when what they mean is they want a reason to dismiss this as invalid (which will happen anyway, because by definition, the police can never be wrong in that situation.)

I guess if something sounds too perfect to be true, it probably is, unless it's not? I don't know what lesson to take from this that can't immediately be twisted for some other shitty purpose.

White people will likely believe white people who say a black man violated a white woman. Here’s the thing: For us to “get over it,” as so many readers insist I should do, we have to confront “it.” That requires homework and soul work. We have to be honest, which leaves us exposed.

Consider poor Liam Neeson. The actor tried to explain his painstaking evolution from a period when his rage was focused on black men — only to be labeled a racist. That does not encourage honesty, as some commentators have begun to note.

The problem is there are too few safe spaces. People are quick to judge, quick to label, quick to assume the worst. But without open minds, empathy, an affinity for justice and a willingness to let go of old beliefs, we will never get beyond “it.”

Eddie T. Johnson, the visibly angry Chicago police superintendent, said Mr. Smollett had taken advantage of the pain and anger of racism, draining resources that could have been used to investigate other crimes for which people were actually suffering.

“I just wish that the families of gun violence in this city got this much attention,” he said at a news conference in Chicago.

The superintendent seemed particularly upset by the fact that Mr. Smollett, he said, had arranged a fake assault that featured a noose hung around his neck. The police say the staged assault was carried out by two brothers to whom the actor had paid $3,500.

“Why would anyone — especially an African-American man — use the symbolism of a noose to make false accusations?” he asked. “How could someone look at the hatred and suffering associated with that symbol and see an opportunity to manipulate that symbol to further his own public profile?”

A representative for Mr. Smollett did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. The actor has maintained that he did not do anything wrong.

Mr. Smollett, who is black and openly gay, told the police that at roughly 2 a.m., two masked men attacked him on the 300 block of East Lower North Water Street in downtown Chicago. He said his assailants directed homophobic and racial slurs at him, put a rope around his neck and poured a chemical substance on him. Mr. Smollett said the assault occurred after he went to a Subway to pick up food. When the police arrived at Mr. Smollett’s apartment, he was still wearing the rope.

Mr. Smollett also told the police that as the attack occurred, he was on the phone with his manager, Brandon Z. Moore, who later corroborated the phone call to Variety. The actor was initially hesitant to inform the police because of his high-profile status, according to law enforcement. It was his friend, the choreographer Frank Gatson, who initially made the call.

But a team of investigators, looking at the case as a possible hate crime, could not find evidence to match Mr. Smollett’s story. The attack was not visible on surveillance cameras and there were no witnesses.

The report of Mr. Smollett’s being attacked spread quickly and a national outpouring of support quickly followed. Multiple 2020 Democratic presidential candidates weighed in to condemn Mr. Smollett’s purported assailants, as did President Trump, who called the incident “horrible,” and several advocacy groups offered aid.

In the days after Mr. Smollett reported his attack, the police released a surveillance image of two men thought to be potential persons of interest. The actor would later say in an interview broadcast on “Good Morning America” that he was convinced that these two were the men that attacked him.

On Feb. 13, the police detained Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo, two brothers and associates of Mr. Smollett’s, believing them to be the men in the images. Their home was raided by law enforcement. Through their lawyer, the brothers initially said they didn’t know why they were of interest to the police, but investigators changed their status from persons of interest to potential suspects publicly. But the story took another twist: The brothers told the police that they had been paid by Mr. Smollett to stage the attack, and detectives released them without charges.

Skepticism over the story existed from the beginning — particularly from conservative commentators who found Mr. Smollett’s story implausible — because of the lack of evidence. Outwardly, the police repeatedly said they were treating Mr. Smollett as a victim and that they had no reason to doubt his story. Mr. Smollett acknowledged the suspicion in some corners in his first public statement about the incident, which came on Feb. 1, when he said through his publicist: “I am working with authorities and have been 100 percent factual and consistent on every level. Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served.”

In the “Good Morning America” interview, which was broadcast on Feb. 14, Mr. Smollett said to Robin Roberts, “It feels like if I had said it was a Muslim, or a Mexican, or someone black, I feel like the doubters would have supported me much more.”

Even so, the Chicago Police Department was still investigating the case as a possible hate crime until late last week, when, Superintendent Johnson said, the police began considering Mr. Smollett as possibly culpable. Mr. Smollett was charged on Wednesday.

...and i dont know why they would lie under oath to a grand jury especially after they turned their phones in and have been cooperating...then its a legally tenuous claim that the defense can exploit to show a biased/overzealous police department.

i think chicago pd jumped that gun at least on this one specific point.

even if it was some indirect payout scheme...if you dont have an admission or corroborating evidence from a witness...you cant just assume. especially when the corroborating witness *contradicts* it.

chicago paid out over $110 million last year alone for police misconduct. after seeing the leaks, police chief press tour, etc...you already know where this departmental shit show was heading.

Plus, CPD probably made some missteps along the course of the investigation. That gave her the "out" to drop the charges, within the confines of what was legally permissible. Ultimately he doesn't pay an extra dime, outside of any legal fees defending himself against whatever lawsuit they bring against him.
