189467, why do you drive an SUV (or large truck?)
Posted by Mike Jackson, Wed Aug-05-15 11:00 AM
unless you use it to drive up
mountains or haul tools, you are making the world worse for everybody not in an SUV

fact: nobody in small cars can see anything on the road in front of them with your tank in the way.

fact: if you get into an accident, you are more likely
to kill the person in a small car. you will be fine, because you are in a tank. but the people in a vehicle you plow through, will die.

fact: burning that much gas to drive around a family of 4 around is an ecological waste.

yes, i am hating on ppl that drive SUV's that don't haul tools or drive up mountains.
because if i get into an auto acident with an SUV, it will crush me and my reasonably sized car.

I am not baller enough to buy and put gas into an SUV every week.

because even if i was wealthy, i i have driven regular ppl sized cars enough to know that SUV's are a dick move.

i am not sure what one is lacking in their lives
to feel the need to take up that much space on the world.

why do you enjoy driving your SUV?

are you aware that you make roads more dangerous for others?

is that part of the appeal?

189468, because i want to and can
Posted by ambient1, Wed Aug-05-15 11:02 AM
189469, is the appeal based on having a bigger, more dangerous car?
Posted by Mike Jackson, Wed Aug-05-15 11:05 AM
is it to protect your own personal safety?

it makes sense to want to protect yourself and your family in an accident.

We keep a minivan. At one point we had two until I sold mine. I have 4 kids and piling everybody into a sedan just ain't an option. I ain't tryin to hear the arguments and shit on long trips 'cause somebody's leg is touching, elbows in the wrong place and alladat.

Plus, when it comes time to move I can take out the rear seats and load it floor to ceiling with shit.

Posted by SoWhat, Wed Aug-05-15 11:07 AM
A:

i love the idea of a huge truck - like a Ford F-350 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Super_Duty#Third_generation_.282011.E2.80.93present.29) or a Dodge Ram 3500 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Ram#2009.E2.80.93present_.28DS.2FDJ.29) or a Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Silverado#Third_generation_.282014.E2.80.93present.29).

...but i'm not an asshole. so i just sit in them at the Auto Show and dream.

where in the hell would i park one of those? and filling it up? for what?

i think it's the 7 year old boy in me who's still obsessed w/big machines. that's the only way i can make sense of my desire to own one of these.

B:

whenever i sit in one of those dream trucks i sing the 'Canyonero' song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZeFDe44Ddo & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkapW5ob9Qs

recently a friend had borrowed his father's Dodge Ram 2500 and as we drove around town in it (we couldn't park ANYWHERE) i played 'Canyonero' on repeat. i was mad he wouldn't let me drive it but i understood.

i don't care if being involved in a collision w/my vehicle poses and increased risk of death or bodily harm to "other drivers," therefore I ignore "road safety" for other ppl. and i also don't care if driving my large vehicle is more likely to harm "the environment" b/c i'm more concerned w/my pleasure. b/c i want to. and i can.
189509, Why would i put safety of other people above safety of my passengers?
Posted by Cenario, Wed Aug-05-15 11:21 AM
you scared... get an suv.

Personally, I also have a car and i don't feel unsafe or in danger while next to SUVs unless the SUV driver can't drive. But i'd feel the same way if the unsafe driver was in a smart car.

Same things goes when i'm next to a tractor.
189510, right. other ppl don't matter.

nah...that's a terrible comparison.

a gun's sole purpose is to shoot something/someone...an SUV isn't built to get into an accident...hence the main reason why that argument is so dumb.
189519, oh of course.
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Aug-05-15 11:56 AM
you are a perfect driver so you driving a large vehicle wouldn't be any sort of problem for anyone.

and your family matters more than the environment too. so it'd be fine if you haul your brood around in a vehicle that pollutes the air b/c the world you'll leave behind for your kids and maybe grandkids isn't important.

i'm right there w/you.
189520, no matter what i drive, if i make a 'mistake' on the road it can be a problem

my pilot is in much better condition than my older altima so i'd venture to say my altima prolly does more damage to the environment than the pilot. Nontheless, both just passed inspection so...........
189521, Yup. That's great.
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Aug-05-15 12:33 PM
189522, getting hit by an SUV is worse than getting hit by a regular size car.
Posted by Mike Jackson, Wed Aug-05-15 06:01 PM
it's physics.

which, of course, is the point of an SUV.

buy a giant car so that if you
fuck up and crash, other ppl's families die.

not yours.

so it doesn't matter if you
don't see a car in one of your giant SUV blindspots.

because you and your family will win the car crash.

that is my point here.
if everybody would stop driving tanks down the road, we could all see more of the road, which
makes the roads safer for everyone.

or, just drive a tank.
other ppl are less safe, but
in the event of a crash, the big car wins.

it makes sense, if you don't think about it.

189523, If it is as simple as you are saying
Posted by Cenario, Wed Aug-05-15 06:21 PM
Then yes, i'm gonna get a bigger car to make my family more safe. Duh. If you have a concern about safety in a car with suvs on the road, buy an suv or ride the bus.
189524, y'all do realize the whole "muh environment" argument is overblown
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Wed Aug-05-15 01:29 PM
right???

The average Mustang, Corvette, Camaro, Firebird, AMG Benz, or any V8 powered performance car has as bad or WORSE gas milage as your typical V8 powered SUV.

Any V8 powered sedan will have shitty gas milage, especially the "hood special" converted police cruisers but no outcry over those.

For example: my ML500 uses the same engine as the S500 of the same year (2005) and gets almost the same mileage as the S-class (13/18 vs 14/20).

The majority of those smaller SUV's (think Rav4, CR-V, Escape, etc) are powered by the same 4 or 6 cylinder as any coupe or sedan and gas mileage is only slightly less than most sedans using the same engine (i.e. the original CR-V got 23city/28highway despite weighing 3200lbs and using a 4 cylinder to move it)

I could go further into detail, but I'm hoping y'all are intelligent enough to see that the whole fuel economy argument is some bullshit.

>What else you got?

Meanwhile, the large "A" "B" and "C" pillars on your SUV make it hard for you to see OTHER drivers. You have HUGE blind spots. Tinted windows in the back means that your SUV is essentially opaque, cutting off the view of drivers behind you. Rollovers are a real concern for these vehicles, also. Squishy suspension means you can barely *feel* the road (unless you've spent the $$$ to have yours upgraded like pickup drivers do).

On my motorcycle, I have close to 360-degrees of view angle. Meanwhile, SUVs drivers can't seem to see me when I'm in the lane next to them.

and what happens when you transport any of their cousins?

Personally, my niece and a few nephews visit me often (almost weekly if not weekly).

What about blended families?

You got 2, she has 2 and ya'll make 1. How's that Honda civic holding up then? So should we just get two cars and double up on our environmental hazard via more gas consumption, more road blockage (2 cars), more pollution (double emissions), more likelihood of an accident(2x)?

I get it, ya'll don't like SUV's but people with 3+ kids and a close knit family probably need the space.

I can haul 5 with me at any time plus another adult. That Civic can't do that.

Plus in IL a booster seat can be required until age 12(!!!)

into an accident in an suv than a car bc of larger blind spots...sure.

Is a good driver more likely to get in an accident in an suv than a car bc of large blind spots...i'm not so sure about that.

A good driver should always know when cars are in their blind spot at any random moment. Checking over your shoulder is a last safety check, but an aware drive already knows whats in his surroundings.
189563, ppl feel safer in bigger vehicles and may drive more aggressively
Posted by southphillyman, Wed Aug-05-15 11:17 AM
i'm assuming there is the issue of physics (weight+ speed) making those accidents particularly dangerous
and the ride height makes them more susceptible to rollovers and uneven points of impact
imagine what would happen to the drive of a miata if a SUV hit them head on....

i'm not saying everyone in a suv is bo duke out here with the whip
but they are probably more dangerous and unnecessary unless you are jon and kate or the octomom
189567, You know who's dangerous and unecessary on the road?
Posted by auragin_boi, Wed Aug-05-15 11:43 AM
-Motorcyclist: skirt regular traffic because they can weave thru (though they aren't supposed to do that), constant speed demons and unreasonably LOUD engines...

and

-People who can't put their phone down to drive
-Idiots who wear earbuds to listen to music while driving
-People who insist on doing 90+ when everyone else is doing 70-75
-People who ride a cars bumper to intimidate them into moving because they wanna do 90 instead of 70-75

^^^And most of that is done by people in cars as there are more cars on the road than SUVs

It's to get away from these people:

>-People who can't put their phone down to drive
>-Idiots who wear earbuds to listen to music while driving
>-People who insist on doing 90+ when everyone else is doing
>70-75
>-People who ride a cars bumper to intimidate them into moving

>
>^^^And most of that is done by people in cars as there are

Because it's safer to get the fuck away from cars than to ride near them, for all of the reasons that you've mentioned. There are no "minor accidents" on a motorcycle.

It's not a good idea to ride a 400lb bike next to some dude in a giant SUV/little econobox playing with his phone and can't see you anyway because of the enormous blind spots he has.

Avoiding cars is the way to keep safe on a motorcycle.

Sitting in stop-and-go traffic with someone in a 2-ton+ car behind you looking down at the cell phone in their lap is putting one's well being 100% in their hands. Playing bumper cars without bumpers is a losing battle. Better to filter through traffic and leave the car drivers to play with all of their distractions. The same for bicycle riders.

Also, by doing this the bikes get out of YOUR way and make more room for cars on the street, but this is 'Murica and most drivers are too selfish and self-centered to realize this.
189573, nah, i'm talking about when its not stop and go traffic and/or

Posted by flipnile, Thu Aug-06-15 11:00 AM
Riders that ride responsibly *hate* these guys because they give us all a bad name, like those dudes that attacked that family in the range rover in NYC.

I too cringe when I see a guy weaving through 50mph traffic at 75+, riding on the shoulder on bike lane, running red lights, etc. Shit, I hate seeing other riders with no helmets (this *really* pushed up the death rate).

my truck isn't humongous...it's a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I've driven Sedans that felt bigger. I really like the truck though and it doesn't do too bad on fuel. It's also not so huge that you should be intimidated by it on the road. but honestly your fear of driving next to a larger car doesn't mean it is dangerous. it might just mean you're a bad driver.

-i work from home so i'm not killing the environment anymore than you are
-it's comfortable and the trunk space gets a ton of use...especially now that I have a kid

SE Michigan potholes are legendary. Back when I was living there we had the 4 door blazer. The typical pothole you just roll over and don't think about it. The pond-sized potholes you roll through slowly, but you still roll through them.

there's tons of practical reasons to own a truck/suv and none of them have anything to do with what you said.

if you're a home owner, you're eventually gonna need a truck or SUV because i assure you that you're gonna get tired of making multiple trips to Home Depot to haul stuff in your tiny little car (trust me). same goes for buying furniture. feels good to not have to ask your friend with the truck to help you move something.

i have two kids and i'd like to be able to be in the car without them constantly kicking me in the back while i'm trying to drive. and heaven forbid if i want to take someone else somewhere in addition to the kids. we used to not be able to sit anyone else in the back seat with the kids car seats.

it's pretty awesome to be able to go on trips and actually fit all our stuff in the car comfortably. no more stuffing bags between the kids or in the floor under their feet.

as far as gas, it only takes me about $45 to fill up so i'm not sure what you're talking about there. it has nothing to do with being wealthy. i drive a pretty sensible SUV.

i'm not even gonna touch the safety issues because that's some of the dumbest stuff i've ever heard.

Posted by SoWhat, Wed Aug-05-15 01:25 PM
he was trying to get out of the spot and drove over some snow to do it. he admitted that if he were in a car he'd have shoveled more but b/c it's an SUV he thought he could get away w/o shoveling as much as he would've w/a car.

the service guy @ the dealer said several other SUVs had come in w/the same problem. he figured the SUV has a design flaw b/c it made sense to expect the thing to be able to clear a few inches of snow.

-it snows alot where i live so i need AWD
-I have a family of 5 with 2 tall teen boys and we don't all fit comfortably in a sedan on long road trips (which we take frequently)
-they are more gas-efficient than SUVs of yesteryear because car makers are using lighter materials these days

My 21 year old just sold her '95 Taurus. I worked on that thing the whole time she's owned it.

I had a 92 Mercury Sable at one point. Had the 3.8L V6 in it.

Before I bought my old Volvo, I owned a 1999 Taurus with the DOHC Duratec V6 in it.

Recently I checked out a 2014 Taurus. Shit felt a lot smaller on the inside to me than the previous generations. I could be wrong, but it really seemed smaller.

For example the Taurus is now the only full size car Ford makes.

I had a Taurus before I had a SUV, and the legroom was just okay. I'm 6'1, my wife is 6'0 and my son is 5'7, at age 11, which means he's gonna be 6.0+ real soon. A Taurus isn't gonna cut it.

A few days ago we went to Tybee Island with a cooler. 3 lounge chairs, 3 suitcases and a backpack. That would have packed a Taurus to the gills.

Basically, my Explorer has a version of the same Ford 6 cyl SHO engine as the Taurus, so I'm not burning that much more gas.

Taurus: 19 city/29 highway
Explorer: 17 city/24 highway
189706, No, don't blame Detroit, blame the people demanding SUV's
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Wed Aug-05-15 02:10 PM
>So blame Detroit (or whoever makes cars these days).

Once upon a time, Detroit had only a few SUV's: Blazer/Jimmy, Suburban, Bronco/Bronco II, Cherokee/Wagoneer and that's it.

The folks that bought them typically took them off road or used them for utility.

Very few people bought them "just because". My 300-400lb aunt being one of them back in '84. She copped a green Blazer with gold running boards 'cause, well... she was big and "cars" didn't suit her well.

The SUV market stayed pretty even until the Ford Explorer hit the market. GM, being ever so crafty, tried to strike first with a 4 door SUV with the 4 door Blazer/Jimmy and added a variant for Oldsmobile (for no good reason).

This is where they began to compete with Chrysler's basically unstoppable minivans for sales and they took off from there. The Big 3 and the Japanese decided to cash in when people demanded more. Shit is simple Capitalism at work.

Full sized SUV's work better (my track coach used to haul us around the state in an old ass Suburban), but minivan's rule in this space.

Wagoneer=Cherokee=SUV

But, yeah... the 80's had PLENTY of big car options.

189707, I need room
Posted by BabyYoda, Wed Aug-05-15 01:05 PM
I am fairly tall, so I need enough leg room and space to feel comfortable. I also bought my SUV (which I would not call a tank) because the brand has a good reputation of lasting a long time (I am over the 330K mark).

I see nothing wrong with people buy SUVs or trucks. Many people do use them to haul things from tools, furniture, supplies to boats, jet skis, 5th wheels, etc.

It is a gas guzzler and tires are expensive, but it works for many people. Lastly, I personally don't want to drive a 4 banger of any sort except to commute to work. I like having some power. I know there are cars who have hp thst will meet and exceed my expectations and I may end up buying a car in my next purchase, but I may also decide to buy a pick up truck being that I love trucks.

In the end, to each one's own. What appeals to you may or may not appeal to someone else and vice versa.

if you have a ton of people, you need a full size van, if you don't, you lose the backseat(s) and have way more space than most of the SUVs people are driving

Recent story a 'hood' handyman told me.

He use to smoke crack. Weekly, repeatedly. Not in the desperate, 'I'll suck yo d*ck for a rock' way but in the, "got-a-good-construction-job-paying-$1500-a-week-and-I-blow-through-most-of-it-smoking" way.

Dude said his dealer use to stop by every Friday, collect his consignment loot (he was letting him get fronts early in the week) and then drop off an 8ball for handyman and his homeboy to buy ($500 every week).

Handy says he did this for a year or so.

One day his dealer rolls up, comes in to collect his $ and then tells him to come outside to get his dope. Handyman walks outside to see his dealers brand new, rimmed up, featured out, pearly white navigator.

Handyman: "Daaaamn, that truck pretty as hell!"
Dealer: "Yup. You paid for it."
Handyman: ...

Handyman says he took the dope, went inside, gave it to his homeboy and stopped smoking crack THAT day. Been clean for 6 years.

FTR i only quibbled w/the part of the story where some person agreed to dispose of the dead baby for $25. i said no one would do that for $25 - they'd either do it for free or would demand more than $25.

189741, His story, not mine...I couldn't confirm it but he told it that way

Says he was a recreational user. Never felt addicted or anything.

He said after the sobering realization that he paid for a truck that probably ranged $50-65K...he cut his losses.
189742, Word. It sounds like b/s.

189746, My Audi A4 was the best snow handling car ever

Chicago winters were nothing. Worst car I ever drove in the snow was my wrangler. it's great if there is a ton of snow or a blizzzard but useless most other times.

Landrover is great period, I'll probably always have a discovery or defender of some sort.

My sister on the other hand has a family of 6. 2 of which are in car seats. She has a 3rd row in her SUV. She needs that big dumb ass car. 6 sometimes 7 are riding.

I too hate being behind larger cars you cant see shit!!!!

189756, i've always owned small cars. last couple have been hatchbacks

w/ makes it great for loading up decent-sized stuff once you push the back seats down. generally speaking, the closer you live to downtown, the less likely you need to be whipping an SUV. especially if your street parking options are limited.

i also think the the amount of space inside an SUV is way overblown.

HOWEVER, being behind the wheel of a big-ass SUV feels OUTSTANDING and i can understand the draw. maybe its a grass is greener thing, but i completely understand why someone who dgaf about the arguments stated in here would gladly drive one.
