To somewhat play Devil's Advocate, is it possible the instructor was trying to avoid a lawsuit? If he was smart and had the possible position, sounds like he should have choked the guy out and got away from the scene if he wanted to avoid too much conflict with the ex. Of course that is easier said then done since it's possible the armbar was the only submission the instructor had at the time.
