I dont know why people dont understand that combat sports isnt just about strength and athleticism. One of the reasons is they have trained their body to take punishment that us normal people cant take. Her body and head can take the kind of abuse that you havent trained your body to take. I'm just saying you don't wanna go to her wheelhouse. She's trained in grappling, she's very good at it and she's likely grappled with guys before (though not your size).

She's not gonna knock you out... the only way she wins is if she breaks a limb or chokes you out. So you don't wanna get close to her unless it's to finish her off.

shit that a person could do to them in real life, because habits make or break you, and if you don't have to watch out for certain things in your training, when someone does it to you in real life, you're going to be fucked.

If you take me down in a sport fight and you're in my guard, I can't heel stomp you in the kidneys/back(do you know how much this hurts? my god it's the worst pain ever), rake/gouge your eyes, reach down and crush your nuts, which are all of the things i'm insta-doing in a street fight if that were to happen. The sport fighters typically don't train to avoid these things because they don't have to worry about them in their sport.

Sport fighters also do really dumb shit in real life fights sometimes. One of my BJJ instructors got into a fight with his girl's ex, got him in an armbar, and the guy tapped out and said ok, you got me. When my friend let him go, the dude punched him in the face. Everyone at the gym was like, wtf dude??? BREAK HIS ARM.

You still need to be a good fighter and train to defend yourself, but they(sport vs real) are two relatively different things. Obviously a great MMA fighter is going to mop 99 percent of the population in a street fight, but if someone has a solid fighting background, but is also trained in real life CQC, the MMA person could be in a world of hurt.

This (oh yeah, and having a job) is the main reason I avoid altercations. Forget getting punched in the face -- you never know who will try to rip your TESTICLES out!! There's no coming back from that.

To somewhat play Devil's Advocate, is it possible the instructor was trying to avoid a lawsuit? If he was smart and had the possible position, sounds like he should have choked the guy out and got away from the scene if he wanted to avoid too much conflict with the ex. Of course that is easier said then done since it's possible the armbar was the only submission the instructor had at the time.

My old instructor was careful to make the distinction between what you can do on the mat and what you can do in the street.

You can roll ont he ground and wait for your opponent to make a mistake on the mat that will allow a submission but, in the street, he's probably got a friend ready to kick your face into outer space.

As bad as my instructor was, he still said you avoid fighting unless it's absolutely necessary.

I do not consider a high school player (all-American or not) to be a top level player. I don't care how nice he is, he's only played high school competition. which is why the majority of these highly touted HS players get exposed when they get into the NCAA. you made it seem as if even the worst all-American (whatever that even means) will just run over a WNBA player. I wholeheartedly disagree with that.

I would say that a Middle of the pack all-American would still beat a middle of the pack WNBA player. The best-best WNBA player vs the worst All-American is surely a different thing, and it would depend on their position and all that.

And yeah, a lot of All-Americans do get exposed for sure, but most were at minimum great athletes, or did something to stand out at the time.

Also, I think 1 on 1 is much different from within-the-game play. The athletic types tend to win those more than playing within the parameters of a game. So I definitely think some WNBA players would run better in a 5-on-5 than the HS ones, but in a straight up one on one, it's way more arguable.

Most of the hs records in an athleticly pathetic state like Utah are better than the professional women. Pull up a state like TX, FL, or CA and you can drop the "most" tag.
Look at age group records and you will find youth records better than women's world records.

Your argument was that an amatuer HS athlete could not beat a professional woman in any sport. Is this not evidence against that?

By my count the boys of lowly Utah are better in 4 of the 7 comparable events.
Better in the 100, 400, 800, high jump. Worse in 200, long jump, and pole vault.

You can't compare shot and discus because the weights are different for men and women. The relays are a team effort. And there are no equivalent long distance races on the two lists you provided (boys mile stopped in the 70s)
