180673, Completely disagree. That's the era of DH I can listen to nonstop.
Posted by Teknontheou, Thu Dec-03-15 10:41 AM
And I'm not West Indian, nor did I know about much of that stuff at the time, outside of the few Shabba and Patra songs that crossed over into Black mainstream radio.

This stuff today I can only stomach for about 10 - 15 minutes before I need to turn it off.

And I'm mad you put Life Is What You Make It up as a song that's aged poorly. That song is still great.
180674, "life is what you make it" is is the first dancehall song I ever liked
Posted by John Forte, Thu Dec-03-15 10:43 AM
I remember staying up late to listen to Red Alert play that shit. I hate it now.
180675, I'm sayin
Posted by infin8, Thu Dec-03-15 10:45 AM
I had my Belizean homegirl bring back some 'dancehall' CDs when she went to Jamaica....

this new $hit is the equivalent of Chris Brown, Omarion, etc....

TURRIBLE....It's like our terrible so-called RnB.

Gimme some Mad Cobra/Geto Boyz RIGHT NOW.
180676, Second this
Posted by Lil Rabies, Thu Dec-03-15 02:22 PM
You dissing the boggling era? I scooped a few Patras back then.
180677, Completely agree!
Posted by adg87, Fri Dec-04-15 02:25 AM
90's dancehall is eons better than the crap out today. Especially when you start getting deep into it. Some of those riddims?!! The Nicky riddim, Bookshelf, Showtime?? Just timeless!
180678, +1
Posted by J305, Sat Dec-05-15 01:53 AM
180679, lol the "ghetto red hot" hiphpo remix was much much better

the classics go, but some of the old jams are dated and sad.
180684, the ones you posted though still got something to them...

180688, Sleng Teng isn't Dancehall
Posted by Selassie I God, Thu Dec-03-15 10:50 AM
180689, what is it?
Posted by T Reynolds, Thu Dec-03-15 10:52 AM
180690, I guess you could argue that that baseline is dub
Posted by John Forte, Thu Dec-03-15 10:52 AM
180691, yeah. I guess it doesn't fit the genre entirely
Posted by T Reynolds, Thu Dec-03-15 10:53 AM
180692, the songs that endure tend lean more closely to dub

Posted by John Forte, Thu Dec-03-15 11:05 AM
180702, yes, if it came on in a club i'm running to the dancefloor

This is actually wrong....

I've been spinning more reggae lately.. better part of a year... basically classics but shit these kids shouldnt know...

but I been killin cats going from Biebz - "Sorry" or ML - "Lean On" to "Murder She Wrote"...

THANKS DIPLO
180709, Sorry and Murder She Wrote still go, BUT
Posted by John Forte, Thu Dec-03-15 11:33 AM
Sorry is dub, and the Murder She Wrote riddim (or shal I say the Bam Bam riddim) is closer to dub too.
180710, anything w/the Stalag Riddim will move me.

180712, mine too.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Dec-03-15 11:47 AM
i was in the barbershop a couple weeks ago where they always have the radio tuned to some station that plays nothing but Dancehall (it's run by Jamaicans and feels like an In Living Color skit b/c the guys are like entirely stereotypical Jamaica, mon) and the DJ played a Stalag Riddim mix that went on for like 15 minutes. i thought was gonna lose my mind trying not to dance or nod my head to the music while i was in the chair having my hair cut.

i live walking distance from the little temple... i mean the virgil. tough building a consistent vibe since the ownership change it seems.

as opposed to an evening of music by future and other undancable shit these niggas make these days smh. just out of curiosity how old are u bro?

of course, some of it is still the bomb.

but i agree that some of it has aged terribly.
180727, If you're not AT LEAST in your mid to late 30's you're opinion...

180729, Some of any genre of music that is 25+ years old
Posted by Selassie I God, Thu Dec-03-15 11:47 AM
sounds dated.

The examples you gave??? C'mon son... Wicked Inna Bed will move the crowd TODAY. Ghetto Red Hot hip hop mix is probably better, but the dancehall version is still working. I've never been big on Frighty and Col. Mite, so... *shrug*
180730, I don't think ANY Shabba Ranks song
Posted by John Forte, Thu Dec-03-15 11:50 AM
fits in a set today. You could spin Murder SHe Wrote for a bunch of 25-30 year olds, and they'd did it. Wicked Ina Bed or Trailer Load A Girlss, not so much
180731, 'House Call' though.

But it fits into a larger narrative of revisiting music from he past and trying to separate the art from nostalgia. People tend to disagree with me.
180748, You have a point on the art vs. nostalgia. But these aren't great examples
Posted by spenzalii, Fri Dec-04-15 07:54 PM
Your theory holds weight across genres, that's for sure. But the exhibits you brought to the table could have been a bit stronger on this one
180749, We didn't know any better
Posted by bigkarma, Thu Dec-03-15 02:06 PM
I know in the ATL, circa late 80's, there was little exposure to island music...maybe Marley, Third World, Black Uhuru...etc. Maybe if you listened to college radio you heard some Yellowman or Maytals.

The 90's combo of an influx of Caribbean and NYC transplants, and dancehall influenced hip-hop getting airplay kicked it off, but still it just the mainstream stuff.

Wasn't until I started going to real Caribbean parties and could go online and hear everything did I get into the better stuff.
180750, Weird but all the ones you posted are considered classics and still

Posted by astralblak, Fri Dec-04-15 03:05 AM
yeah, it's still rocking
180754, Reggae/Hip Hop was an epic fail 9 times out of 10.
Posted by adg87, Fri Dec-04-15 02:19 AM
Despite often pairing two superstars in the genre, it just always came off as disingenuous. As a reggae fiend now, I see it for what it was. An opportunity for dancehall artists to gain exposure. I can barely stand to hear it now. Just awful.
180755, tag for later
Posted by ShinobiShaw, Fri Dec-04-15 12:00 PM
180756, IMO, the songs were dated the day after they dropped.
Posted by Creole, Fri Dec-04-15 01:01 PM
I hated hearing them unless I was lit in the club. Always sounded horrible in cars. I also think it was because I cared more for the traditional reggae stylings of Bob, Jimmy, King Yellowman, Steel Pulse, Third World, and Black Uhuru.

The one and only song that I absolutely hate, on "Ready to Die", is the one with Patra. Dancehall shit ruined a perfect album.
180757, LOL!!!
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri Dec-04-15 08:24 PM
No offense to forte but do you really know what dub means?

This whole thread is just *facepalm* on every level... especially the genre-definitions... FAIL!!!

And no, I have no rintention to clarify, I leave it to someone else since I don't have the "correct" credentials...
