AFAIK at the end there are 3 women remaining in competition for the title. the host tells the audience which has won 2nd runner up. then the host announces the winner of the title.

so i believe it should've gone:

the 2nd runner up is Miss USA!

the new Miss Universe is Miss Philippines!

and by default we'd all know Miss Colombia won 1st runner up.

this has not been confusing for most hosts from what i've seen (but i don't watch a lot of pageants). this particular pageant has been running since the early 50s and beyond and i've not heard about this mix-up having happened before this year.

I'm not sure the pageant (might have been some other international one), but I have read about a host reading the wrong winner. It's rare but Steve definitely wasn't the first.

It's a rare occurrence though there are several pageants. It says the problem here was with Steve and not the process. Even Steve sees that as he has taken responsibility and is not making excuses for himself if my coworker is correct. She said he was on TV this morning saying that it's all his fault.

since I watched those shows, but aren't the runner ups announced in the order printed on the card to build suspense for the reveal of who the winner is? You don't just announce the winner of the pageant without revealing the runner-ups from what I remember.
