165394, Whitney Houston Memorial Post
Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 09:54 AM
Yeah I know it doesn't start until 12 but CNN has been showing stuff, and their actual coverage begins at 11 (BET starts at 11:30...they're currently showing Cinderella)

I just.....this....*sigh*
165395, I dunno if I'm gonna be able to make it through this funeral. I already
Posted by abby, Sat Feb-18-12 09:58 AM
feel a lump in my throat and tightening in my chest. sooooooooooo sad.
165396, the stuff on cnn had me crying as is
Posted by Mahogany, Sat Feb-18-12 10:55 AM
imma try to watch it tho
165397, yep. i had to turn the channel for a while. Not to make comparisons,
Posted by abby, Sat Feb-18-12 11:00 AM
but there is something about this one that is hitting me harder than even MJ. AND I'M A HUGE MJ FAN.

I think that it's because Whitney was so much more tangible and relatable. i dunno. strangely, it kinda did feel like Whitney was everyone's distant cousin or something. i dunno.

and i think we were all pulling for her...so, it's just very sad.

that on top of bobbi kristina having to be hospitalized immediately after just made it all very real, and oh so tragic.
165398, yea exactly
Posted by Mahogany, Sat Feb-18-12 11:05 AM
not to mention the way all of this is being handled is just very "regular" which just makes you feel even closer to her if that makes any sense. It really does feel like a cousin or something

a lot of people can relate the stuff she went thru whether it's you or a family member so it just hits close to home in a lot of ways

>but there is something about this one that is hitting me
>harder than even MJ. AND I'M A HUGE MJ FAN.

165399, yep. it's being handled like (God forbid) or mother would bury us. And
Posted by abby, Sat Feb-18-12 11:06 AM
we've all (unfortunately) experienced funerals just like this, so it's all very relatable and real.
165400, Donnie McClurkin, BeBe Winans, Kim Burrell all performing
Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 10:15 AM
And they got R Kelly performing I Look To You. When I first saw him sing that on youtube and he made that reporter cry....Ive neve heard him sing it in full....this is too much
165401, as much as i want to watch this, i just can't. i'll catch some...

165409, I'm shocked...pleasantly though.

Usually they'd send some random off the street...or Julissa

BET knew better for once
165410, also if you get that Bounce network they are showing it

165414, sort of offtopic: it's funny how CNN used a Youtube clip
Posted by Dr Claw, Sat Feb-18-12 11:39 AM
these sort of things have become the video archives
165415, i dunno if i like the tv coverage vs. the live stream
Posted by afropuff, Sat Feb-18-12 11:45 AM
because the tv commentators are treating it like a concert for entertainment or like they're discussing the superbowl halftime lineup. it's too "entertainment" to me.
165416, What is the live stream like? I may switch
Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 11:49 AM
Cuz I dont like this commentary either. This isn't a damn red carpet. And shut UP Piers
165417, no commentary, a bit ahead.
Posted by kinetic94761180, Sat Feb-18-12 11:50 AM
-tv is delayed.
165418, Hmm my livestream is behind. I may try another site
Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 11:54 AM
Or maybe ie hopefully they'll hush once the actual service starts. Cuz the opening song is supposed to be "The Lord is My Shepard"
165419, tmz's is on point.
Posted by kinetic94761180, Sat Feb-18-12 11:55 AM

bastards.
165420, think of the flks who NEED commentary, too.
Posted by kinetic94761180, Sat Feb-18-12 11:53 AM
-because you know that's why they're doing it.

this shit ain't for you!

-'having to explain erything like it's the state of the union or some shit.
165421, Boy if this don't feel like a funeral that Ive been to
Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 11:47 AM
Like they got these church fans, choir members got on beige instead of white, small time band...
165422, it's nice, though.
Posted by kinetic94761180, Sat Feb-18-12 11:50 AM
-i actually prefer it, & i bet she would've, too.

(not to even ATTEMPT to speak for her of hers)

-but, it's her roots.
165423, Yeah. It's completely appropriate

And they just gon' walk right downstairs to the basement and all the aunties gon be lined up behind the tables serving.

#knowsfromit
165429, yeah i can actually smell that church smell.
Posted by luvlee2003, Sat Feb-18-12 11:53 AM
(not a bad smell, just a distinct smell)

its going to end up hot in there too.

165430, For years I've wondered what exactly that is.
Posted by Teknontheou, Sat Feb-18-12 11:57 AM
Is it the upholstery of the pews? Is there a Church Smell incense that the church supply store sells? How do they ALL have that smell?
165431, its gotta be a purchased smell.
Posted by luvlee2003, Sat Feb-18-12 12:16 PM
Cause I've even smelt it in churches with all wooden pews *repositions in seat*

There are never any open windows. That air just circulates.

165432, I'm sure there are a lot of white people with questions right now
Posted by Very-Effortless, Sat Feb-18-12 11:55 AM
cause this is their first black church experience.

Like one of my white friends just sent me a message on facebook asking me why the choir is wearing all white at the funeral instead of black.
165433, it was funny watching Don Lemon describing a Black funeral
Posted by Mahogany, Sat Feb-18-12 11:57 AM
i was just smh like these people are gonna be so confused.

165439, he does. he still tryna blame bobby though.
Posted by abby, Sat Feb-18-12 12:04 PM
.
165440, Don Lemon did a quick rundown of what black Baptist
Posted by Teknontheou, Sat Feb-18-12 11:58 AM
funerals are like, for the benefit of the white people watching.
165441, Im lowkey ctfu cuz this could very well be 3-4 hours
Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 12:16 PM
With the prayers, the choir intros (1.5 minutes) , reprises (another 3 minutes), and people falling out?

My bosses' grandpa died on a Friday, they had the wake Saturday, and funeral Sunday...naw playa...not in the black church/family lol
165442, lol true.
Posted by luvlee2003, Sat Feb-18-12 12:22 PM
165443, Also, I'm on the lookout for a choir member to catch the spirit
Posted by Very-Effortless, Sat Feb-18-12 11:56 AM
I'm pretty sure it's gonna be the woman in the 5th row from the top on the left side with the glasses on.
165444, ....sooo they not letting bobby speak?

165445, i wouldn't expect for him to speak
Posted by Mahogany, Sat Feb-18-12 11:59 AM
really has nothing to do with letting him do it.
165446, why not?
Posted by kinetic94761180, Sat Feb-18-12 12:01 PM
-he's the father of her only child!
165447, idk i've never been to a funeral where the spouse spoke
Posted by Mahogany, Sat Feb-18-12 12:02 PM
especially not the ex-husband
165448, same here. I've never seen that done before (only been to
Posted by luvlee2003, Sat Feb-18-12 12:08 PM
black funerals though...)
165449, yea they usually get somebody close that can keep it together
Posted by Mahogany, Sat Feb-18-12 12:18 PM
because it's difficult to get up there and speak at a funeral of somebody you care about...

i remember at my friends brother's funeral a boy that lived around our way passed out right in front of the church and he wasn't even talking! He was saying that it was just so much pressure just standing there mixed with the grief you get light headed....scared us half to death
165450, they should let him sing, then.
Posted by kinetic94761180, Sat Feb-18-12 12:11 PM

lol.
165451, You cant be serious.
Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 12:19 PM
165452, that i am not.
Posted by kinetic94761180, Sat Feb-18-12 12:24 PM

hence the lol.
165453, the man is grieving. perhaps he doesn't want to speak.
Posted by abby, Sat Feb-18-12 12:07 PM

165454, This is inappropriate, but Corey Booker
Posted by Very-Effortless, Sat Feb-18-12 12:01 PM

165455, hopefully he'll be our 2nd black president.

165458, Who was the lil guy Bobby was comforting in the parking lot?

165459, RE: Who was the lil guy Bobby was comforting in the parking lot?
Posted by EclecticCreation, Sat Feb-18-12 12:07 PM
That was his oldest son.
165460, I think that was his youngest son Bobby Jr
Posted by SuiteLady, Sat Feb-18-12 03:11 PM
165461, Yeah that was him, and that kinda heart my heart to see him crying
Posted by SuiteLady, Sat Feb-18-12 08:16 PM
like that. I am just now watching this cause I had to work today, but that boy was living with them during that Bravo show and seemed to regard her as a parent so, it sucks that he missed the funeral over whatever BS happened there. I mean whatever the problems of the adults, the "kids" (I know they all grown now) shouldn't have to pay the consequences.
165462, i think it's fucking awesome that this is a regular funeral
Posted by flora, Sat Feb-18-12 12:05 PM
i don't know what i'd expected, but this seems really perfect for her considering how normal/down she seemed to be

it's tasteful, it's joyous, it's touching but it is undeniably regular black
165463, yup
Posted by Mahogany, Sat Feb-18-12 12:07 PM
>i don't know what i'd expected, but this seems really perfect

165464, ^^^^my thoughts exactly
Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 12:09 PM
165465, that, plus, Whitney was totally about her personal relationship with God.
Posted by abby, Sat Feb-18-12 12:09 PM
So, this seems to be what she would have wanted.
165466, It reminds of just how rarely we see regular Black experiences on tv
Posted by smooth va, Sat Feb-18-12 12:09 PM
165467, this is also a great display of how really good singers are
Posted by luvlee2003, Sat Feb-18-12 12:10 PM
pretty standard in the church.
165468, right cause they are blowing better than the pros right now

165470, So - is it appropriate to wear sunglasses inside a church?
Posted by Very-Effortless, Sat Feb-18-12 12:09 PM
This is being debated on facebook right now.
165471, lol i was wondering about that.
Posted by luvlee2003, Sat Feb-18-12 12:11 PM
165472, For a funeral i say yes
Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 12:12 PM
165473, i think if you're grieving and look like a mess behind them
Posted by Niq96st, Sat Feb-18-12 12:13 PM
i could see why you'd wear sunglasses.

165474, Have those people ever been to a funeral?
Posted by MikaDanteBrown, Sat Feb-18-12 12:14 PM
165475, i don't think its up to any of us to decide.
Posted by flora, Sat Feb-18-12 12:14 PM
165476, it doesn't matter not to mention this is being aired for the world to see
Posted by Mahogany, Sat Feb-18-12 12:19 PM
i'd prolly have shades on too.
165477, if that's what you need, that's what you need.
Posted by kate404, Sat Feb-18-12 01:49 PM
165478, this woman's voice sounds eerily similar to whitneys
Posted by flora, Sat Feb-18-12 12:11 PM
it's zoning me the fuck out
165479, Yes, it's uncanny at times. Same runs and everything
Posted by kwez, Sat Feb-18-12 12:12 PM

Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 12:13 PM

Posted by flora, Sat Feb-18-12 12:14 PM

165482, maybe a little, but not so much.
Posted by kinetic94761180, Sat Feb-18-12 12:13 PM
-i was abt to say she kinda resembles her look-wise-in the face atleast.
165483, Shoot, I don't have to go to church tomorrow, now, lol.
Posted by Teknontheou, Sat Feb-18-12 12:12 PM
I'm getting my praise in right now.
165484, You know some of these choir members ain't showed up to rehersal
Posted by Very-Effortless, Sat Feb-18-12 12:13 PM
in a month of Sundays... but dammit they made it today!
165485, the one who was singing is whitney's cousin....same voice. gave me
Posted by R A i n, Sat Feb-18-12 12:21 PM
chills.
165486, speakin in tongues on cnn!
Posted by flora, Sat Feb-18-12 12:15 PM
165487, omg, somebody's gonna get to shouting and we're gonna have
Posted by abby, Sat Feb-18-12 12:15 PM
to explain that to Piers and Jane Valez Mitcell. :-/
165488, the Holy Ghost may be making an appearance.
Posted by smooth va, Sat Feb-18-12 12:18 PM
165489, yo if someone catches the spirit, its over
Posted by flora, Sat Feb-18-12 12:18 PM
165490, I can't wait. We need a good drum beat going.
Posted by MikaDanteBrown, Sat Feb-18-12 12:20 PM
165491, perhaps we should have issued a glossary of behavioral terms to
Posted by abby, Sat Feb-18-12 12:24 PM
these poor anchors and producers. lol.

i hope they don't get sked.
165492, The WHOLE first row of the choir is on watch for the spirit
Posted by Very-Effortless, Sat Feb-18-12 12:20 PM

and now they got Tyler Perry?

165541, it doesn't sound like that's why he left
Posted by Mahogany, Sat Feb-18-12 12:45 PM
if that's why he left then he can go but if its because he didn't feel like he was wanted he should go back because he will more than likely regret it in the future. He should be able to pay his respects like everyone else
165542, i just read the article, you right

165544, seriously when i read that i was thinking that

they make it sound like he brought 9 random people but i'm sure most of them were his kids and family.
165545, but here's the thing about that though...
Posted by abby, Sat Feb-18-12 12:56 PM
like, i understand that they were part of Whitney's extended family, and I understand why Bobby wanted them there; but, he shouldn't have expected that they all sit in the family section. Family section is usually like 2-3 rows in a small church like that. When you consider all of Cissy nem's family, I don't know why Bobby thought that his WHOLE family would be able to sit there. attend? perhaps. but sit in the family section? naw.
165546, whitney has always talked about her CHILDREN
Posted by masacuda, Sat Feb-18-12 01:58 PM
her KIDS...

not her steps

not her DAUGHTER

those were her CHILDREN...

she was married to their father for 11 yrs

she is the mother of their youngest sister

they SHOULD be seated with the family

that is some BULLSHIT
165547, i agree
Posted by flora, Sat Feb-18-12 02:06 PM
165548, :-(
Posted by abby, Sat Feb-18-12 12:43 PM
if this is true though, how did he think that all 9 of his entourage would sit with the family?

family seating is usually pre-determined by the family/funeral director. how did he think he'd just force that at the last minute?

it's unfortunate that that happened. it really is.

i'm somewhat disappointed in bobby.

yes indeed. I mean, White dudes LOVE them some Whitney Houston...seriously.

It wasn't until i saw pics of her at various stages of her life...She really *was* a beautiful ass woman...like seriously so I got why White men celebrate her beauty so much.

I'm kinda similar to you..Whitney has always been beautiful to me, but not stand out/drop dead gorgeous...but i'm getting *WHY* she was seen that way by other folks...

so its best for him to keep his gotdamn mouth closed and go home.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/rogerfriedman/2012/02/18/bobby-brown-explains-leaving-funeral-but-riff-raff-stayed/

Bobby Brown explained through a representative what happened at the funeral:

“My children and I were invited to the funeral of my ex-wife Whitney Houston. We were seated by security and then subsequently asked to move on three separate occasions.
I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continue to ask us and no one else to move,” he said. “Security then prevented me from attempting to see my daughter Bobbi-Kristina. In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene. My children are completely distraught over the events. This was a day to honor Whitney. I doubt Whitney would have wanted this to occur. I will continue to pay my respects to my ex-wife the best way I know how.”

It should be explained that whatever trouble Brown had at the funeral with security would have come from Pat Houston’s brother’s detail. And meantime, who was there? Why, Raffles van Exel, who I told you about in a prior posting. That’s some tight guest list!

Bobby Brown Explains Why He Left Whitney Houston’s Funeral
Email 0 Smaller Font Text Larger Text | Print

Bobby Brown left Whitney Houston’s funeral at Newark, N.J.’s New Hope Baptist Church shortly after the service began.

In a statement put out by his representative, he explained, “My children and I were invited to the funeral of my ex-wife Whitney Houston. We were seated by security and then subsequently asked to move on three separate occasions.

“I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continue to ask us and no one else to move,” he said. “Security then prevented me from attempting to see my daughter Bobbi-Kristina. In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene. My children are completely distraught over the events. This was a day to honor Whitney. Posted by MrThomas43423, Sat Feb-18-12 04:05 PM
sometimes....we're so hypocritical. the family didn't ask Bobby to leave, security did. probably some Deacons who felt he didn't need to be there. what happened to come as you are? what happened to "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

we can be so elitist and judgmental sometimes.

Posted by CherNic, Sat Feb-18-12 04:11 PM
They barely invited him to the service I'm sure they had no issues with what security was doing . Clearly his kids were distraught, i saw his son crying on CNN. How DARE they, the fam, security, whoever not let him sit next to Bobbi Kristina? That is her father and her siblings not Joe Hobo from off the street

Sorry for the mini-rant it's not at you but my fam would pull some ignant shit like that

I'm gonna bet that Cissy has had and continues to have big problems with him. She may blame him for her daughter's descent into drugs. Whether or not that's fair, I'm sure we've all seen family blame the folks around the user for their problem.

A friend of mine died about a year ago, and his family and some non-user friends, while they didn't prevent his co-user friends from attending the funeral, they most DEFINITELY gave them the side eye.

that's how I will remember her. she was having so much fun and seemed so proud to be doing it. also had a "i can't believe i'm doing this" look on her face...like a little kid at some points. really amazing video.

remember, her version went PLATINUM. so many famous singers have covered it, but nothing like that. it's even on her greatest hits.

it was a beautiful service, one that i didn't mind just sitting and taking in. i was very full. we lost a treasure way too soon.

so glad the family decided to have her homegoing service in a humble, little church. there were talks at having it in some big forum but Cissy said, "as for me and my house, we will {continue} to serve the Lord". AWESOME that MILLIONS that would never step foot near a church to hear anybody's sermon were indeed taken to church today.

i'm VERY disheartened/saddened by Bobby's (and his children's) treatment.

we've ALL got a date w/destiny. i've experienced no less than 6 deaths in the past three months (not including celebrities) and it's just reiterated my mortality and the mandate to do as much as i can with the "dash" in between my dates.

i will be in church tomorrow, giving my reverence and praising Him as i have been EVERY Sunday (- 1) since i recommitted myself (and family) to do so.

i don't know why she had to go so soon, but i do indeed pray that her soul/spirit has finally found peace. i pray for the loved ones she left behind that will miss her sorely. i pray that Bobbi Kristina finds her way. :-(
