you need to look at your own sig, man. She ain't crossing her man, or at least she SHOULDN'T. In a perfect world everything you just said would be 100 and would apply. Sadly this ain't that world. Also, as much as it sucks, I think dude MAY want to consider whether or not dude's unwarranted and unsolicited criticism cary water. If they do, regardless of the fact that step pops is acting uncouth, for the good of his son, he MIGHT wanna look into it.
