Who would purposely, within earshot to me, slight Obama by vocally expressing how much you hate him without a clear cohesive argument or reason why just hate for hates sake.

I also want to state that while I was not for President Obama initially I came around at the (eff a grilled Palin moose) end.

BEST THINGS EVER!!!

I stood on my third story balcony tonight, a hookah hose in my left hand, a laptop in the other. After a constant refresh the CNN.com blue and red map, I was astounded to see the number 3XX appear.

What had happened hadn't quite sunk deep enough into my gut upon first sight, not even through the abdomen. The number 3 burnt to the flesh covering my eyes. I felt the spirit of what it meant to be an American, a feeling I hadn't experienced since the days of the Terrorist attacks. But this was different, it wasn't a feeling of paste and paper, as it had been before, but an iron clench. A grinding clutch that frees the heart of a stony shell. The Phillys had won the World Series, but only spilt milk compared to this emotion. I stood from my chair, clutched the third story railing and allowed a small tear, no different from those of our father's, fall from my face. This droplet, was one of the new American, was not the droplet of an old September, but a new November.

A bauble of hope, one of joy, pride, sunk to the cold August soil. And below me stirred the people. The people with their hope, pots and pans, vehicles with horns, pride. No longer a White Man, but the people. People with joy, people with love, people with hope. I doubt it was because I voted for Barack that I felt the pride. I felt a wall my father's father built be triumphed by my once estranged brother, and a lesson was taught to America that is the greatest lesson of all, that a people is a people and thus love one and all.

(I wrote this minutes after 11 pm on November 4th, 2008 shortly after hearing the good news)

I cried immediately....

Called my mom who was kinda calm at first...she called me back 5 minutes later in TOTAL disbelief like "he won" I can't believe it...

She got to me...she started crying talking about "all those years I spent marching and fighting and getting locked up and hosed down..."

My entire family is from the backwoods in Alabama so like the stories she will tell u will blow u away...so I kno that shit hit her hard...

I called my nephew and reminded him how important this was and told him to never forget this moment and to remember that he can do anything...

lol I told him that I kno I sound like a old lady, but when u get older just remember what I'm telling u...

I called my grandma..she was crying...she said she couldn't believe it and never thougth she would live to see this...It was weird because she said I was more fortunate to see this than she was..I gotta think on that one..

Then I went from North Philly to City Hall....

Screaming taking pics with EVERYONE up and down the streets...

They did the electric slide at City hall (yall kno I LOVED that...)

and then they did a cha cha dance around in a circle...

then my "how u doin" friend performed Beyonce's "Single Ladies" dance FOR EVERYONE...(idk where that came from or how that fits in any of this but oh well...lol)

THen I went back to running up and down the street...

I must say I was kinda diappointed by the lack of excitement from a lot of the young college students...

I don't know if they don't know their history or what, but a lot of them were just outside chilling not saying nothing doing nothing just waiting to book some girls and shit...

I had to cuss some boy out for calling Mr. President a "nigger"

If anything this night made me realize that I want to do more to help people...like I'm soooo moved it's not even funny...

It's time for EVERYONE to do better...this has to be a group effort....

I'm definately ready to do my part...

My father was a pretty much a constantly leaning republican for a good portion of his life especially from the Reagan days, which is understandable considering the state of the economy at the time. He lived and supported my Mother and my family for many years silently, I never got the truth out of him regarding his vote in 2000, but I have a feeling he voted for Bush for "fiscal" reasons.

Well I moved back home about 1 year and half ago when he got sick with terminal prostate cancer, but I remember visiting during the 2004 rallies and he was so enthralled with Obama to the point that he said, "I can see him being president". He was so insistent that he hadn't heard anyone like him since JFK, who he voted for.

When he passed away in April of 2007 I never even thought that the man he surprisingly admired, Barack Obama, would end up running for president of our fair country. So when he decided to run it was never a question of who I was voting for, because I was voting for 2 people at the same time, the man who had captured the democratic nomination.

Today I was able to put the change my father, a staunch republican but utter realist, into action. And I couldn't be prouder of the choice I made in that lonely booth. Because I wasn't just placing my vote I was placing the vote of the man who made me into who I am. I proudly voted for Barack Obama not just for me, but for my Father, for my children, for my children's children. To show that we do care and history does matter. That the choices we make will shape the future regardless of what your "core" beliefs are, the right choice is the right choice.

So tonight I shed tears of bittersweet joy, knowing we did the right thing. Knowing the future is here and now in a way that future generations will acknowledge as a crucial turning point in the history of America, bringing the essence of America back into leadership of our country.

I can honestly say that the leadership of the country I was born and raised in fully reflects the way I feel as I type out this missive today. For once I don't feel ignored, I don't feel misguided, and as corny as it it might be to say God Bless the country and it's people and God Bless The United States Of America. There is nothing I can say to reflect the pride I have inside for this day and for the future of this country.

Wife and I went to a results party organized by an Obama crew in Durham, but it was dry. And frankly I wanted to celebrate for this night with a highly concentration of melanin. Just moved to Chapel Hill so we still dont know where the cousins are. So we went home and watched the rest of the night on tv. i twittered my ass off. She fell asleep with a smile. What keeps ringing in my mind is that his landslide represents so much about black genius. This ish is normal, not a recent achievement or accomplishment. I think America is learning to to do new things; such as acting more human, and making better decisions about securing and protecting the investment of this country and all the sacrifices. I really hope people see that. It's like the subtle but important difference between referring to our Ancestors as slaves or enslaved Africans. Big difference.

I cant wait to get around more family and friends and I have enjoyed the stories of all the celebration. i just moved from Philly 3 weeks ago and they are going hard. (I would still be somewhere with a plastic cup of dark rum if I were there) and before that I lived in PG County MD. I would love to see the unity on U street. But i am glad to be in my home region with my wife on the day that might really truly represent change for our future and more importantly the future of our children.

I heard about his victory while listening to the radio at work. I did not cry, but I was PROUD to hear the great news!

I will say this. Props to everyone who showed up and voted.

I hope we can move forward and strive to change our nation for the better.

I talked to my mother as she called me throughout the night to keep me updated on the election.

I want to talk to my father and grandmothers to see how they feel. I know they are all proud and I am glad that they are alive to see this historic moment.

If it hasn't already been said, this needs to be archived. Its the most important world event that most of us have lived through.

I can't help but think of all of our predecessors that endured so much and never thought they'd see this day. Of course, Barack's election doesn't solve the world's problems (or the U.S. problems), but this is an amazing day nonetheless. The older generation in my family is just in awe.

In fact, I just wanna say to anyone who thought me or the other mods were going too hard last night.... for me at least, I wanted to keep everything together as much as possible, so that when we archived the posts we could look back on this for years to come.

At 114, a daughter of former slaves votes for Obama
Gertrude Baines is the world's oldest person of African descent. She cast her ballot at a convalescent facility near USC.

Gertrude Baines' 114-year-old fingers wrapped lightly over the ballpoint pen as she bubbled in No. 18 on her ballot Tuesday. Her mouth curled up in a smile. A laugh escaped. The deed was done.

A daughter of former slaves, Baines had just voted for a black man to be president of the United States. "What's his name? I can't say it," she said shyly afterward. Those who helped her fill out the absentee ballot at a convalescent facility west of USC chimed in: "Barack Obama."

Baines is the world's oldest person of African descent, according to the Gerontology Research Group, which validates claims of extreme old age. She is the third-oldest person in the world, and the second-oldest in the United States after Edna Parker of Indiana, who is 115.

When Baines was born, Grover Cleveland was president and the U.S. flag had 44 stars. She grew up in Georgia during a time when black people were prevented from voting, discriminated against and subject to violent racism. In her lifetime, she has seen women gain the right to vote, and drastic changes to federal voting laws and to the Constitution -- and now, this.

"No, I didn't never think I'd live this long." she said.

The walls of Baines' room on the second floor of Western Convalescent Hospital are covered with birthday cards from presidents and officials from years gone by.

A picture of George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, is framed on the wall. Above it is a signed picture of Obama and City Councilman Bernard Parks, now running for a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. On Baines' bed sit two teddy bears, one with an Obama pin on its right arm.

"Why am I voting for him? Because he's for the colored," Baines said, her language itself hearkening to a different time. "Sure it's good. That's the first one I know to be in there. Everybody's glad for colored men to be in there sometime."

On Tuesday, Baines sat in her wheelchair, a fuzzy red scarf around her neck, a red bonnet on her head and black slippers on her feet. She is hard of hearing and her memory comes and goes. She tends to refer to historical milestones by who was president at the time.

Aside from chronic arthritis, she is relatively healthy, mobile and attends church every Sunday in the hospital's dining room. That's where her pastor first told her a black man was running for president.

"It struck me," Baines said. "It struck a lot of people when they heard about a colored person" running. Baines looked over at her favorite assistant nurse, Cynthia Thompson. "What's that boy's name?"

"Jesse Jackson?" Thompson said.

"Yeah," Baines said with a laugh. "He tried, but he didn't make it."

"Why they want to keep having white? Why not let a colored person in some time?" Baines said. "I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad to get a colored man in there, and so many people are. I hope nothing don't happen to him."

This is only the second time Baines has voted. The last was for John F. Kennedy.

"And you see how they killed him. I was in Memphis, Tennessee, at that time, during the parade. Who was the next president they shot? Two of the boys . . ." she said, trailing off.

A registered Democrat, Baines said she was going to ask the hospital to remove Bush's picture from her wall. "They put him up there," she said disdainfully, waving her hand.

"We are all the same, skin dark, white, that's all," Baines said. She said Obama would be good for everybody. "Republicans don't care for the poor people," she said. "They want it all and they don't want the Democrats to have nothing."

Baines gets most of her election information from chats with hospital workers and friends. Her eyesight is poor, and it is not always easy for her to watch television.

On April 6, she will turn 115. Baines has been at the hospital for about nine years, and has outlived everyone in her family, including her daughter -- who died of typhoid at 18 -- and two nieces.

Baines said she spends much of her time sleeping and eating, but enjoys getting out in her wheelchair for a ride now and then, eating extra crispy bacon for breakfast, and watching "Jerry Springer" from time to time.

As lunch rolled around, Thompson wheeled Baines around to face the television as it cast images of Obama striding by to vote.

"Everybody says they think he's going to get it," she said. "And I hope he do. Maybe things will get better."

Shortly after 8 p.m., her nurse switched on the television and Baines witnessed Obama's victory. Baines smiled and said to the nurse: "I told you so." Then she went to sleep.

I must confess, I didn't think there were enough well meaning white people in this country for this to happen. I'm glad I was wrong.

The looks of the faces of those 666 people at McCain's concession speech are priceless.

We should make this the official end of the era of the glorification of ignorance. Black and white. It is no longer cool to be dumb.

There is freedom of speach in America, but if you are ignorant and/or racist, you don't deserve a public platform. Share that ignorance locally with your own dumb kind.

Brothers and Sisters, now that we have a dignified, educated black FIRST FAMILY in the Black House, let us stop letting the willfully ignorant, unrepently ghetto set the trends in our culture.

With a dignified black first lady like Michelle Obama in the Black House, "Real Housewives of Atlanta" needs to be taken off of the air due to low viewership.

Just as the ignorant whites who are clearly in the minority were making all whites look bad, so are the ignorant blacks. Let us deny them a public platform so that the rest of country -- and the world -- will realize that the majority of us, white and black, are much better than that.

I know I have not been on this site for a long while but this is definitely something that is worth logging on for.

We are truly blessed as a country to have a representative of change in The White House. For the older generations, like my grandparents, who have struggled for changed for so many years and to the youngest of our generation, like my children, that will know what it is like to have a black man in office; this is truly a glorious day for us all. It touches my heart to know that we now have a symbol of strength not only in our president but in the wife that stands beside him and the children that look up to them. They will give us a new found sense of hope and faith. God Bless our new First Family.

My phone rings, and I answer, freezing in my rushed stance, in the middle of the hallway. My hand trembles, but it moves quickly. I slide the receiver out and put it to my ear.
“Hello?” I say quickly, my breath catching hoping that I would hear the great news and yet hoping that I wouldn’t because that would mean it wasn’t too late for me to get near a computer or television. The voice on the other end paused for a split second, and then spoke.
“Didn’t you hear?”
“Hear what?” I replied, my strong tone suddenly taking on the presence of a mouse’s squeak. I slowly braced myself up against the wall. The voice on the other end of the phone became almost immediately hysterical.
“Didn’t you hear? Didn’t you hear? It’s done! It’s done!”
“W…What does that mean?” I asked, not wanting to force myself into realization, a pleasure that came too fast and then disappeared, like a good sneeze.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
“It’s done, Liana! He did it! He did it!”…
“……He did what?” I asked…my voice barely there as I crumpled onto the floor, my back against the wall, knees hugged up to my legs, the tears falling from my voice before my eyes could catch up. By now the voice on the other end had sensed the emotion in mine, and had begun to cry. I forced myself to forge my way out of the limbo.
“….Is he president?” I uttered, barely able to get the words out through small sobs now coming into fruition. “….Is he president? Is Barack president?”
It took the voice a moment to answer again, but the sobs ceased for a moment, just enough to reply, “Yes, Liana. He’s the president.”

…And then the tears came, and didn’t stop….

I ran into the office, half-hysterical, wanting to talk to the vice-principal so that he would let me leave immediately. Unfortunately for me, a meeting was taking place and it would not be finished for 15 minutes. The two female staff members in office looked at me, and immediately got me a seat, following their staunch Korean tradition of respecting my right to privacy about the matter of which I seemed so distressed. I was told the vice-principal would not return for a moment, and I said that it was alright. I asked her if I could turn on his television, which sat right behind his desk. She agreed and immediately flipped it on.

“BARACK OBAMA ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES,” I read on the red CNN heading, barely able to differentiate the CG banners from the hail of confetti shooting out of the air in a location I cannot recall. The effect was like a bullet or a shock to the body. My muscles became weak and I hunched over, covering my mouth, and crying out loud sobs into the black skin there. I cried for the great people of my past who wrote speeches and songs foretelling such a day. I cried for the eyes of the old and weary that had cried so many tears over their lifetimes that they barely had anymore to shed. I cried for the suffering that I would never know and the history that I had never experienced, which is carried in the wrinkles of the brows of those generations before us. I cried for the solidarity in that one moment of mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers who shared the burden of their skin and understood the significance of the day, including the man who’s pictures flashed before me on the television screen. And I cried for either the tragedy or the victory of the entire world that could not fathom that moment as it happened, for such things are impossible. I cried because I knew that it wouldn’t be until he was long dead and gone….maybe until I was long dead and gone, that the realization would finally sink in, a tragedy that has defined so many of the great and heroic stories of our past.

….I cried because I knew that I wasn’t wise enough to fathom what was happening.


Even as I sat, trying to gain my composure, answering my cell phone, ringing itself silly, even as my co-teachers began to surround me, patting me on the back and congratulating me, even as they stood staring into the screen trying to understand, as non-Americans, what I couldn’t as a citizen by birth, I began to try to piece together, bit by bit, the call that I could only imagine he had ringing through his own head.

There are many tired and cracked and bleeding feet in this world, and there are many old hands. There are many weary eyes that were once unbelieving and distrusting for the necessity of self-preservation. There were many shiny bald heads and worn voices, and countless more buried beneath our feet, that we trod upon every day, that were glad…are in awe to see this day come. There are broken hopes that, even in death, could have been mended. There are wandering souls that, even in life, begin to find their peace. There are many words unspoken…232…500…10,000 years worth of words floating through the air, praying that today was the day that someone would grasp a hold of them and be able to understand.

I believe everyone believed that today would be that day.

I don’t believe that day will come.

Part of the sweetness is the bitterness from the lack of understanding. Part of the triumph is in the tragedy of the old bodies that are simply glad that their flesh allowed them to creak and stumble into today, not wishing for anything more. Part of the mystery are the “one day”s that have come before that we will never know the true meaning of, and the “what if”s that it is now our burden to carry.

This isn’t about America, and I say that with such love for my country spewing from every part of my being. This isn’t about any one group of people, and it isn’t about any one generation, and it isn’t about the living or the dead only, nor singularly the past, present, or future. It’s some wild and beautiful conglomeration of them all, one that none of us and none of our ancestors would ever be able to put into words, and just a little bit of something eternal which we are blessed enough to have the fortune to barely GLIMPSE, every now and then in this ongoing story of humanity.

We’re not gods and we cannot tell our future, but there is definitely something beautiful about stumbling through the dark, hoping to one day find the light, slowly pacing, placing one foot in front of the other, one step at a time to an ending that none of us can know.

Between this and the Phillies I could die next week and say I have lived plenty! Greatest Fall in the history of Western Civilization!

I am so happy. Today jsut feels so different, too. I feel warm and fuzzy.

I'm still amazed that we will have a black president...it feels like a dream but its real.

I'm so glad everyone, especially the youth, hip hop community, and basically, the country--came together and said enough is enough, we need a change, and Obama is the right person to do the job.

I think he will be a great President. He brings back a lot of hope and credibility to our country.

So Little Time, So Much Damage

While Americans eagerly vote for the next president, here’s a sobering reminder: As of Tuesday, George W. Bush still has 77 days left in the White House — and he’s not wasting a minute.

President Bush’s aides have been scrambling to change rules and regulations on the environment, civil liberties and abortion rights, among others — few for the good. Most presidents put on a last-minute policy stamp, but in Mr. Bush’s case it is more like a wrecking ball. We fear it could take months, or years, for the next president to identify and then undo all of the damage.

Here is a look — by no means comprehensive — at some of Mr. Bush’s recent parting gifts and those we fear are yet to come.

CIVIL LIBERTIES We don’t know all of the ways that the administration has violated Americans’ rights in the name of fighting terrorism. Last month, Attorney General Michael Mukasey rushed out new guidelines for the F.B.I. that permit agents to use chillingly intrusive techniques to collect information on Americans even where there is no evidence of wrongdoing.

Agents will be allowed to use informants to infiltrate lawful groups, engage in prolonged physical surveillance and lie about their identity while questioning a subject’s neighbors, relatives, co-workers and friends. The changes also give the F.B.I. — which has a long history of spying on civil rights groups and others — expanded latitude to use these techniques on people identified by racial, ethnic and religious background.

The administration showed further disdain for Americans’ privacy rights and for Congress’s power by making clear that it will ignore a provision in the legislation that established the Department of Homeland Security. The law requires the department’s privacy officer to account annually for any activity that could affect Americans’ privacy — and clearly stipulates that the report cannot be edited by any other officials at the department or the White House.

The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel has now released a memo asserting that the law “does not prohibit” officials from homeland security or the White House from reviewing the report. The memo then argues that since the law allows the officials to review the report, it would be unconstitutional to stop them from changing it. George Orwell couldn’t have done better.

THE ENVIRONMENT The administration has been especially busy weakening regulations that promote clean air and clean water and protect endangered species.

Mr. Bush, or more to the point, Vice President Dick Cheney, came to office determined to dismantle Bill Clinton’s environmental legacy, undo decades of environmental law and keep their friends in industry happy. They have had less success than we feared, but only because of the determined opposition of environmental groups, courageous members of Congress and protests from citizens. But the White House keeps trying.

Mr. Bush’s secretary of the interior, Dirk Kempthorne, has recently carved out significant exceptions to regulations requiring expert scientific review of any federal project that might harm endangered or threatened species (one consequence will be to relieve the agency of the need to assess the impact of global warming on at-risk species). The department also is rushing to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list — again. The wolves were re-listed after a federal judge ruled the government had not lived up to its own recovery plan.

In coming weeks, we expect the Environmental Protection Agency to issue a final rule that would weaken a program created by the Clean Air Act, which requires utilities to install modern pollution controls when they upgrade their plants to produce more power. The agency is also expected to issue a final rule that would make it easier for coal-fired power plants to locate near national parks in defiance of longstanding Congressional mandates to protect air quality in areas of special natural or recreational value.

Interior also is awaiting E.P.A.’s concurrence on a proposal that would make it easier for mining companies to dump toxic mine wastes in valleys and streams.

And while no rules changes are at issue, the interior department also has been rushing to open up millions of acres of pristine federal land to oil and gas exploration. We fear that, in coming weeks, Mr. Kempthorne will open up even more acreage to the commercial development of oil shale, a hugely expensive and environmentally risky process that even the oil companies seem in no hurry to begin. He should not.

ABORTION RIGHTS Soon after the election, Michael Leavitt, the secretary of health and human services, is expected to issue new regulations aimed at further limiting women’s access to abortion, contraceptives and information about their reproductive health care options.

Existing law allows doctors and nurses to refuse to participate in an abortion. These changes would extend the so-called right to refuse to a wide range of health care workers and activities including abortion referrals, unbiased counseling and provision of birth control pills or emergency contraception, even for rape victims.

The administration has taken other disturbing steps in recent weeks. In late September, the I.R.S. restored tax breaks for banks that take big losses on bad loans inherited through acquisitions. Now we learn that JPMorgan Chase and others are planning to use their bailout funds for mergers and acquisitions, transactions that will be greatly enhanced by the new tax subsidy.

One last-minute change Mr. Bush won’t be making: He apparently has decided not to shut down the prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba — the most shameful symbol of his administration’s disdain for the rule of law.

Mr. Bush has said it should be closed, and his secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, and his secretary of defense, Robert Gates, pushed for it. Proposals were prepared, including a plan for sending the real bad guys to other countries for trial. But Mr. Cheney objected, and the president has refused even to review the memos. He will hand this mess off to his successor.

We suppose there is some good news in all of this. While Mr. Bush leaves office on Jan. 20, 2009, he has only until Nov. 20 to issue “economically significant” rule changes and until Dec. 20 to issue other changes. Anything after that is merely a draft and can be easily withdrawn by the next president.

Unfortunately, the White House is well aware of those deadlines.
