So, I'm back on my sofa (which I offered to at least ten people over the course of the weekend as a place to sleep if they come visit) in lovely ATX. Just thought I'd give a little blow by blow of my first RE experience. Pictures to come tonight ot tomorrow probably. Attendees, feel free to respond to my slanderous comments or tell your own story.

After a 3 1/2 drive Friday evening, we met up at Ra, a sushi spot sorta near the Galeria. Pretty low-key, saying hi to old friends, meeting some new ones, trying not to let them know that I couldn't hear their names over the restaurant noise lol. Probably 20 ppl there.

After a brief stop off at Wu's, it was up north to Harlem Knights, which made Austin strip clubs look like bingo parlors. Mr Goodbar got a few birthday lap dances, notably one from a woman who most definitely deserved the title "MEGASTRUCTURE". Latenitemix was later heard to say "I heard a clapping sound behind me and just turned around like 'oh..my..god..'" Bonamie couldn't get enough and practically had to be dragged out*.

After that, everybody broke off to wherever they were going...I stayed with Wu that night and found out just how rough she likes it**.

Saturday morning, we loaded up 27 lb of Wu's cookies and headed over to the Magnolia hotel for registration. There, we received a backpack lifetime supply of watermelon chapstick and um...RE t-shirts***.

Then a little soul food at "This Is It" restaurant that brought on an itis so strong that several RE attendees may still be in a coma.

Then we kinda broke off. Marauder(I forget which is which...but...Dave), Kangol, and myself went with Burb on a rainy tour of the 3rd and 5th wards that was disappointingly candy paint-less. On the bright side, Kangol did get some nice photos for his forthcoming coffee table book showcasing cheap motels.

We went to a red door party at El Patio soon after. I've never seen anything like it...a packed dual-level club at 2 PM on a Saturday. And the women. Lord, the women+.

The highlight of Saturday though was the hip hop show @ G.R.A.B., showcasing, most notably, rap quartet "HISD." It was followed by a DJ Burb set that brought on an unprecedented level of crunkitude. I know I'm not the only person there who doesn't remember the last time they danced like that. After a meal in the frozen tundra of the 59 Diner++ and a much-needed shower, I passed out on my bed at the hotel next to Stayls, who hadn't joined us at the 59 Degree Diner.

Everybody seemed a little screwed n' chopped Sunday after that show the night before, so the Burbique out at Burb's lovely Sugar Land house was relatively low key. We had the world's worst Q & A game and a few rounds of Uno for which Bonamie may never forgive me+++. After making Burb come up with four hundred categories for a game of charades, we promptly decided to leave without playing.

Sunday night was karaoke at Spotlight, with Latenitemix being the only OKP I'm aware of that got to sing. That was pretty much it. Said most of my goodbyes there, and after lunch today with Stayls and Kangol, rolled out.

In summary:

- Boo rain. Way to make the best of a bad situaion though.

- I'm pretty sure I beat it into all the committee members' heads while I was there, but I can't stress enough how much I appreciate everything y'all did for us. This was a fantastic event and I'm so happy to have been there.

- Y'all who didn't go...missed out. It was small, probably about 20 attendees in total, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm in no position to criticize, being that I've lasted thru about 5 reunions before this one and never gone. But I will give these things more consideration in the future, and recommend y'all do the same.

- To new friends and old alike, it was nice to meet/see you again, and I hope we meet up again onna these days. Holla at me anytime.

- Come to Austin, suckas. I mean it.

(or never been) can be upset about the turnout of a RE. Those of us who went had a blast. Anything else is just speculation.

It was decided a while back that the RE would be in Houston. It benefitted those of us who live in the south who can't drop dough to go to a RE in the northeast ever year. If you live in a well okp populated area more than likely you'll have much more opportunity to see OKPs more often during the year than the rest of us do. If it wasn't for you, it wasn't for you. No need to say if you'd be pissed about this or that, when it obviously wasn't for you like it apparenetly was for the okps who actually took the time/energy to come down. I can GUARANTEE that over the next several days you won't find a person who went that didn't have a good time. The energy was great and the committee did an awesome job.

I'm saying though, there was an anchored post at the top of GD for weeks that had the list of registered attendees.

I don't think anyone who went expected anyone more than the list that was posted. I think from my experience and the people who went who i spoke to who had been to RE's in the past, the consensus was that every RE is fun, regardless of how many people attend. It's the fact that a group of folks decide to spend there holiday weekend together that makes it fun.

If you saw the list of those registered to attend and went and didn't see anyone else there, why would you get pissed (as you suggested you would)?

The point I was trying to make was that if being around lots of OKPs is easier to do for you locally, then you are fortunate. Some of us don't have that opporunity and thats why the Houston RE was a good deal for those of us that went.

Everybody knew this would be small long before the actual event. If you were promised dozens of ppl and showed up to find 20, then okay, be mad. That simply wasn't how it went though, and in the immortal words of Stuart Smalley, that's...okay.

This is It. Rather this is ITIS. It took everything in me to continue on with my saturday after eating that food. There's a reason we only eat like that in my family on holidays...

the crew all simultaneously deciding it was time to leave the rooftop pool when mr and mrs old man speedo showed up.

tex saying he might make it lightly mist as we prepared to hit up Harlem Knights.

Harlem Knights. lol i mean really.

the controlled chaos that was Chachos at 3 in the morning. including the large Houston PD presence outside.

latenitemix doing a mean "Every Little Step" at the karaoke spot and me being ridiculously hype about that.

Burb doing a mean "Me myself and I" with a glass of wine in hand like they were paying him to do it all.

everything else is a blur. give me a couple of days for things to transfer to my long term memory and i may update this.

Overall a very good time was had. I really didn't know what to expect but everyone was so laid back it felt very family like very quickly. Thanks to the committee ya'll did an awesome job.

that hotel was slammmmmmming (white lawn jockey, Amp Fiddler in the lobby). didn't get to christen it (*waves at kangol*) but we had a blast anyways lol

OK, I know our recaps can't compete with the Adwhizz drama, but we can try. And even though it took me 3 airlines, 2 delays, a flight cancellation, and an extra day to get there, I'm glad I came through. The Houston crew did a great job even though it rained on us most of the time.

Um, I can't really think of anything that hasn't been covered and the pics speak for themselves. So thanks to the committee & everyone who came through.

Well... I had a great time.. my 1st Re... won't be my last. I enjoyed meeting every one of you all. I didn't get to attend all of the events - but the ones I did were too much fun! I'm sooo glad you all got to experience the amazing talent that is H.I.S.D.

Sunday's bbq was just what I needed to recover from the night before.. and closing it out last night at The Flat w/ DJ Sun was the icing on the cake.

To everyone that came thru to Houston - I'm glad you all had a great time. Our home is yours and you are more then welcome in my home any time. To all of the offers I recieved to visit my new friends in their home state... Move over - I'm on my way... and I won't be alone.. lol...

seriously though every single person i encountered was cool as hell, genuine and just interested in chilling and having a good ole time.

i created it but noone ever ended up asking for the illustrator file. i just assumed you guys had dropped the pdf into illustrator and grabbed it that way lol

They had a live band called the "Fire Department" that was literally "on fiyah". They backed up the Gza's performance too.

I just hate how they have you in there for 3 hours before the show even starts. That's some ol'bulshat. He came on right at 12 and was done about 1. He was extra friendly with the crowd, givin girls a swig of his champaigne - STOPIN to take pics with random folks in the crowd, signin cd covers, tshirts, etc. Then afterward he hung around til the place emptied givin folks pounds and sh*t.

Gotta love'em.

i had such a wonderful time
the margaritas were great (except for that fake one at spotlight)
the hotel was the best one we've ever had for a re (put the sheraton beds in there and it'd be absolutely perfect). the rooftop view was so lovely
i ate so much :) :(

i really did have a blast
it felt funny not to have to climb into a truck this morning
