94679, eryKAHBAdu gets THE LESSON
Posted by analoguegirl, Sun Nov-18-07 04:42 AM
PEACE
its 2008 a.d.
as much as i would love to be JUST a recording artist, i am not.-theres a difference
i am a performance artist first - theres a difference.
i write lots of my material with you in mind- there is a difference
i am very honored that you all care....love or hate (as you call it) same energy to me.
i am also surprised you dont expect me to fire back- its the best part.
some cant see us... we are a dying breed.
if you did , you'd also see the humor in my fuckery
and perhaps even understand this hightened ability... to know YOU so well.
i seriously enjoy you all.
keeps me alert and informed.
this year i turned 36.
my ass and legs have gotten thick.
my children are brave
i feel exquisitely honest... and
since bunches of you are uninformed, i feel compelled.
come on ...
this is therapy for me
we're all (most) on this board for the same reason... so
here is my undivided attention (no "fuck yous"- i cant promise, however) for a few hours.
ill be logged in the next couple of days.
ill answer any question with in reason.
that way you dont have to guess.
im here.
i hear.
clock is ticking.
lovers grab your hearts...
haters take your marks...
okay.... go.
feed me.

94680, Who would you most like to work with that you haven't already?
Posted by CondoM, Sun Nov-18-07 04:49 AM
Nevermind the first questions lol, I found the thread.
94681, So far, looking back..what album of yours do you enjoy
Posted by IslaSoul, Sun Nov-18-07 04:50 AM
most or still listen to alot?

Is there going to be an european tour in the future (not festivals)?

edit: what's up with Jay Electronica..is he on the new one?

2nd edit: what music from other artists you've been listening to/enjoying the past few months?

Peace
94682, How can we work together
Posted by TheAbstractTruth, Sun Nov-18-07 04:57 AM
I am young but I can play the music and I want to so bad.

My background is jazz, rnb and stax soul...and playing bass in your band is my dream gig at the moment. I am outta NYC right now, and I am trying to take lessons with your man Chris Dave as soon as I get enough cash to make his time worth it.

Gimme some advice in terms of stepping it up so that someday I might be able to play my shit with Ms. Badu.
94683, P.S. I missed the New York hit this summer...
Posted by TheAbstractTruth, Sun Nov-18-07 05:00 AM
you gotta play here again soon, I have been bumpin Baduizm live like it is my job...Hubert Eaves is such a bad man.

What do you think of some of the international singers getting shine these days, like Corinne Bailey Rae and Amy Winehouse?

Would you sing at my wedding, and how much would it cost?

Posted by NotYaAvgBrotha, Sun Nov-18-07 06:24 AM
Erykah, I have been hyped about this project since I first heard about it and kinda hoped it would the first of these "3 albums" to be released. I think partly that is the reason I was kinda let down by Honey/Real Thing, but we WON'T get into all that again.

ANYWAY, what can you tell us about the project?

94748, and you would have had EVERY right......
Posted by NotYaAvgBrotha, Mon Nov-19-07 04:25 PM
to get in my ass, but you know I would have fired right back at you. In all honesty Erykah, I have been down since that live performance on Video Soul back in the day, and I think that was before Baduism even dropped.

I truly love MOST of what you do. I am just at a point where I have out-grown 98% of hip-hop because most of it is ignorant drivel. I even make a point of not even listening to a track that uses the N word (Foreign Exchange gets a pass.... I love that album), but that is another story. Speaking of Foreign Exchange, Connected was the last hip-hop album I fell in love with (and yeah, like the other poster said, you need to get up with Nicolay).

I didn't like WU when it dropped but live performances of Danger, I Want You and Back In The Day made me appreciate the songs a bit more. STILL, they were no Mama's Gun. I will more than likely check out the album, if I hate it I'll tell ya and if i like it, I tell ya that too. I'm not all hate.

I'm waiting on Edith Funker and Loretta Brown.
94749, Slight correction here.

It wasn't Video Soul, it was Planet Groove. I still got that joint on tape somewhere.

I don't know why Worldwide Underground gets so much hate on the boards here. I love the album myself. I thought that it was funky, soulful, smooth, and gritty. What was it missing that garners so much hate from some of you?
94750, NO... it was Video Soul

Not sure why Donnie wasn't there.

Donnie wasn't there because that wasn't his show. It's that simple.

i didnt hear a 'bag lady' or 'on and on' in either of those two new songs as far as first singles/leaked album previews go (well honey was cool but the other one was more like an interlude). hopefully its just a case of there being better stuff on the albums though. still, i look forward to the new album(s).

erykah, in what ways did madlib as a producer help you achieve your artistic vision on the songs you worked together? what did you learn from madlib?

and now a specific question, what did madlib do in the studio? did he play any instruments like he does on certain projects of his own or was it strictly sample-based?

thanks.

i know that soulquarians period is pretty much behind you now, but seriously - you, poyser, and quest have made some beautiful music in the past. otherside of the game, sometimes, penitentiary philosophy, ad 2000, etc. are there any plans to work with those two in the future?

94796, RE: what makes you decide to work with a producer?
Posted by analoguegirl, Mon Nov-19-07 02:48 AM
sympathetic vibration.
i am a producer , writter and arranger
i choose like- spirited producers.
i used to listen to dilla's beat tapes, madlib's , karriem's, sa-ra's 9th jah born etc...
i felt the soul of the fresh choices they made
we vibrate together sympathetically.
theyd always give me beats to vibe to from 1999.
alot the beats are older too lol. yet ageless.
been riding to them forever.

really this internet exchange stuff/ itunes on my mac /ichat prompted these collabs
for "kahba" (working title).

i put all my beat tapes into itunes and also started using ichat .
heads were sending me beats.

this quickened everything .
i took my music every where i went now.

(keep in mind i was the chic in 2004 a.d. with an xtra lg tub of 4 inch reels - not rims -every city i went to ...getting held up in security. )
thus, the name analogue girl.

fast forward to 2006

one day i got on garage band ( a hybrid of logic) and started to drag the beats from itunes to a track.
then i just layered several vox trx over that beat .
Got about 9 songs in one day...
messing around.
that was the beginning of this particular project.

this made me more independent.
could work quicker and more often.
the kids usually took first seat to creating music.
now it was different.

i chose the beats that i felt had a certain hump to me.

the project really started to pop after i met mike chavaria an engineer from detroit.
he was working wth jay 'tronic at the time.
i like his fx and ideas.

why these particular producers?
i have so much respect for these cats and what they do.
ive know the process and the wealth of knowlege that they all share about music and sonics across the board.
scientists and geniuses.
their music collections are extra- ordinary .
we all just click.
same tribe i guess.
i choose all them like this . or something just draws our minds together.
ie: quest, poyser ,pino , jeff lee , doc gibbs, ron carter, etc....

FYI : baduism was compiled of carefully selected trx as and 2 live joints from the roots.

for this project KAHBA , i was def thinking ahead and not backwards.

you guys are in for an interesting ride.

by the way
the term neo soul was created by Kedar Massenburg the former manager of D'angelo and former prez of kedar/ motown .
this man signed me in 1995 after hearing baduism in its entireity minus the roots .
(i brought the roots on board after being given a budget.)
anyway this title NS was originally given to d and i to set us apart from music in REGULAR radio rotation since we were a little to the left of that time's sonic sound (1995).

keep in mind my music and d's music sound nothing alike .
Instead what we had in common was an exexcutive who had an ear for interesting underground talent.

neither d nor i had ever heard this term NS before, nor did we accept it as who or what we were.
THE NAME TOOK A LIFE OF ITS OWN.

94822, RE: you have something against showmanship?
Posted by revolution75, Sun Nov-18-07 11:59 AM
nope showmanship is cool
but sometimes the music can get overshadowed by 'showmanship'

2 stories come 2 mind with with this. the one is the story about bill graham challenging jimi hendrix. he told him he thought he couldn't perform with out gyrating, tongue-licking, pyrotechnics. this pissed jimi off and he went out and did one of his best shows--just him and his guitar

another example would be p-funks anti-tour. one of their best tours (imho again) because they lost all of their costumes and props and just got onstage and funked.

the moral of the story is, I THINK it would be nice 2 c erykah perform without the costumes and props. just erykah, straight no chaser.

ain't it grand?
and amazing how
no matter how "not ready"
you think you are
you just GET READY
and then
nothing else is ever the same

and then
you start to forgive yourself
for being flawed
because after all
if you can give life
then certainly
you can forgive yourself
and affirm your own

and then
everything else just falls away
and you find yourself
forgiving motherfuckers
when before
you would have just said
"fuck you"
and let it be

i just got off the phone w/my uncle
in houston
who
among other things
is a raging alcoholic
he was getting drunk
at 9:30 in the morning
but needed to hear my voice
and i talked to him
for almost an hour
that was church
and i'm better for it

but i think what people are missing is the lyricism displayed on mama's gun and baduizm. those songs were very well written. your work since has seemed almost freestyled in comparison (only going by WU and the two new singles).

an honest inquiry...are you spending as much time on your lyricism now as you did when mama's gun dropped?

or was it b/c there was collective inspiration from MG being recorded near the same time as voodoo and lwfc?

Posted by spirit, Sun Nov-18-07 08:04 PM
okay, some thoughts...this all comes from that dangerous love they call fandom...ha.

the third verse was where you were bringing it...but the first two verses didn't do much for me. your writing used to be the strongest part of your armor, queen. your ability to ride a groove majestically was a vital second. since WU, that's been inverted. you're flowing, but the pen game is less lethal.

is this a variation of the 'don't go talking that shit, badu' that you freaked on 'on & on', like you don't want to bring it on the level of the third verse through the whole song b/c you don't want to lose people?

hmmm.

edit: the world needs a jay electronica album as soon as possible. just thought i'd throw that out there.

i say people are uninformed because of the off comments and incorrect facts they are stating within their opiions.

i KNOW people are uninformed about me and the music i produce.

they can only assume, espeacially
if they havent followed my career or even 'soul music ' for the last 15 years.

im dedicated to this.

im not in a rush. for what?

i love life, my community, the world community, travel, metaphysics, friends, family, exploring, teaching school, going to school, acting, writting, film, styling/ fashion..

i bet people dont know that i write like im writtin rhymes and deliver the song like im singing blues.

i feel that some fans here are uninformed because they've not experienced my love .

others just like to be comical... so do i , so it dont bother me unless im PMSing.

theats when the other fish shows her fins and bubbles.

But the next time you come around, if I can get there, i'll be there.

I know that the music you do means something different to you because its yours, you have a different connection than everybody else.

But it doesn't make somebody's opinion of your music invalid because they don't know every little detail of how you created it.

I'm sure you understand that everybody aint gon dig everything you do...that don't mean they don't know, they just might not like the shit.

re: verse on liberation
94874, RE: why is that?
Posted by imcvspl, Sun Nov-18-07 12:10 PM
the song is about liberation and she's griping about how she's being treated in first class. the trials and tribulation of stardom? just seems waaaaaaaaayyyyyy off topic, and distracting. fortunately joi cleans it up with 'shake that load off' but its still there and i don't like it.
94875, did you really listen to the lyrics tho?
Posted by Koku, Sun Nov-18-07 12:28 PM
we all have our individual frame of reference.
& i don't curse celebrities *just* for being
superstars, in fact i may be one of the few
ppl in the world who actually feels sorry
for say...a britney spears. they don't
live the lives that we lead.

first class is HER reality, & if you're in
first class, & mofos tryna treat you like
you're on a buddy pass (which has happened
to me a couple times, only i really was
in first class on a buddy pass :-P) you
have the right to feel some kinda way about
it.

i know *I* did...

there's a lot more going on in that verse
than the first class gripe. i mean how
would any of us (regular folk) feel if
*everybody* was a yes man, & wanted to be
our friend, and we couldn't sift through
the fake/genuine? personally, that would
fuck my head up. i thought her verse was
approp.

Folk in your face, you're a superstar
Niggaz hang around cause of who you are
You get a lot of love cause of what you got
Say they happy for you but they really not
Sell a lot of records and you rollin in
Swoll up in the spot, now you losin friends
All you wanna do is get to where you are
but the label tried to make you compromise your art
You make a million dollars, make a million mo'
First class probably treat you like a nigga po'
You wanna say "Wait!" but you're scared to ask
as your world starts spinning and it's moving fast
Try to stay sane, it's the price of fame
Spending your life trying to numb the pain
You shake that note off and sing a song
Liberate the minds, then you go on home..
94876, but other than the last line what's it got to do with liberation
Posted by imcvspl, Sun Nov-18-07 12:37 PM
its just very egocentric on a theme that should be devoid of ego. and don't confuse me with others - i didn't curse her.
94877, RE: but other than the last line what's it got to do with liberation

actually i was speaking from the mind of a liberator

you dont have to get it . its waaay cool.

is there a song you like , however?
94878, which is a bit egocentric yes?
Posted by imcvspl, Sun Nov-18-07 06:34 PM
>actually i was speaking from the mind of a liberator

i'm not trying to knock you or where you were at the time. not even trying to knock the message of what you were trying to convey, it just through me off thematically. its like the song to that point is reflective in a way accessible to most listeners, but your voice was very specific toward your own experiences. i listen to the song and when your verse comes on all eyes are put on you as opposed to the inner reflectivity the rest of the song allows for.

>you dont have to get it . its waaay cool.

not getting or not getting, its just something i wondered if you thought about. or more speficically if anyone had ever brought it up to you. and its not a im hating on you, just sharing how i felt about the song.

>is there a song you like , however?

actually there are quite a few. i'll go on record as being one of those that loved Worldwide Underground and almost consider it your best work but only the tip of your potential, which i only hope continues to flourish in your future endeavors.
94879, you know y'all are basically agreeing to disagree, right?
Posted by spirit, Sun Nov-18-07 08:18 PM
re-listening to 'liberation' again, e's verse arguably fits in with the 'there's a fine line b/t love and hate'/'can't worry about what another n---a think' concept laid out in the song's opening (love of fans/hate from others, including airport personnel (heh)/can't worry about what people think once you're famous, etc).

someone could just as well make the argument that 'i sacrifice every breath i breathe to make you believe i'd give my life away', etc, is as much of a self-involved line as e's verse, on a 'look at me, i'd die for you' level.

i don't think the song is so singularly focused that e's verse doesn't fit.

it's all perception.

Cosign...when i heard "liberation" it was just like "damn that's my shit! It was the last song on the Cd and a perfect ending. I loved the entire song including Erykah's verse. I liked it so much that in my directing class (Mr. Norman, GSU btw) I chose to make a video using that song..it was sooo dope, at least we thought it was (LOL!) I had my homeboy in jail congregatin wit the other incarcerated fellas, we had a slick deputy that was really down for the cause, pregnant girlfriend coming to visit her man, and by the end of the song the sly deputy had freed all the brothers from jai. Mr. Norman was telling us I'm going to show this to Erykah, we were all so psyched! What do you think of your experience in the theater dept at GSU? Did you consider an acting career before you made it in the music industry? I know you're a hell of an actress, I saw you in the House of D, i enjoyed your performance, i would love 2 see you in a major role that would give you a lot of emotional range. Is an acting career a part of your future goals? Last ques. did you attend booker t for dance or theater?

i never noticed e was more self-involved than the more general verses that apply to anyone (non-celebs we mostly are) till you brought it up, but yeah, that verse does seem out of place now. but hey, when that verse was recorded, e had just became famous right? i imagine it's a bit of a mind-blowing experience. it might have been her first chance to speak on it. to feel liberated enough to speak on it, if you will. *wink*

the 'shake that load off' breakdown, btw, is one of the most awesome moments in music. heh.

94889, how do i answer that free of snark re: knowing liberation
Posted by imcvspl, Mon Nov-19-07 04:17 AM
cause it would seem you got two columns, and by initiating this line of thought i've been put into the hater column.

but yes i know what liberation is. and putting it into a song is no easy task. but i do know is assuming oneself a liberator is a position of ego, particularly from someone who cannot prove they have been liberated (shit that sounds snarky, its not meant to be). i guess its a hard critique this many years later. i'm not expecting you to go retract the verse etc. seriously, you put forward the space where i could speak to you candidly, and i shared a thought i'd always had about a song you were on. because i question it, doesn't mean i'm against it. i just wondered if you had thought about it. it would seem not and so i'm glad i put it out there.

if this makes me a hater in your eyes, that's kind of fucked up, and actually reinforces my critique about the song. because what is hate? someone trying to have a true discussion about a serious topic? what is love? someone who'll go along with whatever you think because of who you are?

i got love for you e, i speak from a position of love. as human beings on our own paths to liberation, with the hope that this discourse might help us both in that regard.

but on a more serious note:

elaborate re: LIB
94896, Liberation is one of my favorite songs off of Aquemini
Posted by , Thu Nov-22-07 11:37 AM
I take your verse as a "crabs in a barrel" analogy; people pulling you down even as your rise to the top. Can't be happy with you being happy or successful; want to much from you; want you to be superhumane. In a way, fans are enablers to inhumane treatment of stars (ie, would the paparazzi hound britney spears if we didn't traffic perezhilton.com)

People want the word liberation to mean the opposite what their ideas of oppression are, but chains are chains. Bling or not.

But even more so, the song as a whole is constructed for different points of view of what liberation is, so to take one verse and hate on it is just to not understand that perspective. Don't feel it? fine. there are three or four more verses that you may align with.

Personally, I'm a superstar in my own mind, so yours was the first verse that I connected with the first time i listened to Liberation...

I must say though, I'm lucky because I have a literature degree and in college I took a wonderful class with a guy named Keith Leonard and we spent an entire class on "Liberation". I kid you not. Aquemini was on the list of required texts for that class. So I might have a much different perspective on that song (and entire album) than everyone else here because I've studied it like I would a book. There's not one way too look at anything and we all take our individual baggage into a song when we listen to it.

FYI, WWU got me through probably the most difficult time of my life. The Grind was on repeat for three or four months. Thanks for making that album. It means alot to me.

I heard "Baduizm" for the first time a few months ago.

And I loved it.

My question is, when is this sound going to return? Could you perhaps release an instrumental version of "Baduizm"?

And I highly suggest that you work with Dangermouse. I HIGHLY suggest it. Do an album with that guy because creatively he'll take you there.

Please respond to me, thanks a bunch! :)

94955, I know you write your own material, but there's one song you should cover
Posted by johnbook, Sun Nov-18-07 04:20 PM
I think it would be great to hear you do Inez Cheatham's part in a cover of Eddie Bo's "Lover And A Friend". There are a lot of similarities, and that's one song that would be as valid today as it was 40 years. It would be cool to hear you sing "I'll stand on the corner just like you, fight all my battles just like you, and try... and try... to satisfy you", because when I first got the 45, I thought "it's kinda Badu-ish".

Go all out, release it as a limited edition 45, have it available only at shows or through Okayplayer or something.

I throw out loads of ideas in this place, at least someone should go for one. Otherwise I may have to step my game up in the new year and do it myself.

two great songs, released in a period of four months.
these songs made me really hungry for WU (sept 2003).
then when the EP dropped it turned out to be a totally different record.
it was nothing in the line of these songs and i couldn't get myself to appreciate the album.

now it's nov 2008 and 'real thing' and 'honey' have been released.
are these tracks any indication of what to expect from the upcoming release 'kahba'?
or will i get fooled again? (imho i'm kind of hoping for the latter.)

Ever considered making a album with central character or theme? I love the way the character from "Other side of the game" showed up later in "Danger".

It doesn't have to be her (of course), but there is so much to say about what's going in today's world and so many artist's either don't have the vocabulary or the balls to speak "truth".

Anyways, Peace to you and yours. Good luck with the coming releases.
95016, How did you manage..
Posted by Origin05, Sun Nov-18-07 11:06 PM

To get into the mind of every woman when writing Mama's Gun? What place did those lyrics and that music come from?

Because seriously-- that albums got me through a lot and your entire body of work is amazing in my opinon.
BUT that album is like the "Requiem" of your body of work.. I love it.
95017, RE: How did you manage..
Posted by analoguegirl, Sun Nov-18-07 11:51 PM
the music inspires me.

always music first.

i choose and create it carefully.

the words already live there.

i listen inside the song for the melody thru rhythmic babble / freestyle

the rhythm leads me to the words

simple.

under it all is experiences from the past -

sometimes the future

so in that case i learn from the song later .

there is no time or color here.

but yeah,

it all depends on the music body ive choosen.

what ever the music choice ... still expressing the same way -honestly.

Posted by DVS, Sun Nov-18-07 11:39 PM
First off...I didn't feel "Honey" for a myriad of reasons....

The beat was okay.....but the thing I've been MISSING from you...is your words....

You are a thinker...an artist....you give of yourself freely when inspired....and, more than other artists....one can catch glimpses of your essence through your words.

I miss that....COHESIVENESS that led to a "Mama's Gun"....the passion and organization of that project....

Or even the fresh innovation of a "Baduizm"...the way that when you sang "Otherside of the Game"....you FELT THAT SHIT in your chest....

Honestly, as an outsider...it just feels like you've been in a writing rut since those two albums..."Worldwide Underground" had a few gems...but it wasn't the cover to cover read that your previous work was.

Now, you gotta understand....I luh you guhl...like...my wife understands that you are one of the few women I'm leaving her for, sight unseen!!

But as a result....I EXPECT more out of you than I do these other cookie cutters...

So where do I fit in....as a fan who wants to let you grow...yet thirsts for you to strive for the excellence you've shown in the past?

Real talk, babe....that's the only way I serve it.

Whatever the outcome...keep shining.

Hey I don't really care much about you, and I hope you don't care much about me.

That said, some of my favorite memories so far are blizzard days where I didn't have to go to school or class and I got really high and played strategy video games and listened to albums like Mama's Gun, Liquid Swords, Generation Starwars, Black on Both Sides, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, Odelay, L.A. Woman, Dig Your Own Hole, The Fat of the Land, Pre-Millenium Tension, Protection, etc....

Anyway, I hope you keep singing till you can't. You should.

y'all captured a vibe/ zone that's indescribable...

I'm sure Ayers had to be like "damn... is this 1978..??".... Excellent job!

yeah, there's a lot of assholes in here trynna shit on Erykah and i understand her being testy about that

but here's one guy who is OBVIOUSLY a fan, OBVIOUSLY loves her work, OBVIOUSLY has been thinking about it on a deeper level

he asks her a question about a verse she dropped 10 years ago, and she comes at him sideways... and the more he's trying to make peace and explain that he meant no harm, the more she insults him

i don't think that's right

imagine if all artists opened themselves up for the hard and serious questions all of us fans have about their art. it would be a really interesting experience for all involved, but it's the artists who can't handle that.
95064, its why artists should stay away from the internet
Posted by GumDrops, Mon Nov-19-07 09:35 AM
before, it was just a one way process - there was hardly any chance artists would hear what people were saying about their music or them, but now its much easier to find out. ideally it might help both sides - i.e. fans might understand what the singer meant in a certain song, and the artist might take on board some of the (hopefully constructive) criticism. not necessarily a bad thing.
95065, it's why artists SHOULDN'T stay away from the internet
Posted by howisya, Mon Nov-19-07 09:39 AM
technology has evolved and there's no turning back
artists can no longer pretend to be oblivious to criticism (positive and negative) and we shouldn't coddle them
ultimately, the artists should get something out of the exchange, at the very least knowing what their art means to those who experience it

i have SO MANY questions for my favorite artists and since i'm not in the music industry or so-called music journalism (thank God), the internet has been my only outlet for my questions. it's been really nice getting answers over the years.
95066, this is definitely one of the more 'appreciative' posts on the lesson

that other post was a bit over the top but is how i feel about mg. i can't listen to it. and as i said in this thread i think worldwide is the best work of her catalog but only touches on her potential as an artist. the reason being she tamed down the writing and took it back to letting her voice ride the groove rather than trying to have a groove and force all this deep highfalutin artsy fartsy into it.

you'll also note the chronology. lib is before mg. and so perhaps my question is at the heart of my later (or this time prior) critique.

i have no ulterior motives. they're just my thoughts.

incidently my bday is 319
95072, what lyrics/songs in particular are you talking about?

the reason being she
>tamed down the writing and took it back to letting her voice
>ride the groove rather than trying to have a groove and force
>all this deep highfalutin artsy fartsy into it.

i like the more relaxed feel of some of the songs on worldwide underground but some of it though is just a bit aimless and erykah performing below par. id agree that there was a bit of slightly contrived hifaultin-ness on baduizm but on MG it didnt seem affected at all. so id be interested to hear what songs youre talking about.

you expressed yourself inteligently and i gave you a few facts .

but your 'attourney 'seems to dissagree.
and O.N. may be JUST a 'lil disagreeable period- needs a point to argue . (scroll up , peep game. )
doesnt matter who , O.N. gone find SOMEBODY to defend. ... must be a sag.

hey dont get mad either, just my oppinion ..

anyhow,

... i have grave respect for you and your critique.
you gave it.
im here to give you feed back. im sorry it hurt you if it did. hhhhhhhhh.

NOW
when i asked you if you knew what liberation was, you said yes but did not define it.

again .
what is liberation.?
what does it mean to liberate or be liberated ?
im asking sincerely , for , we may have a fundamental diff in opp of the definition.

as i stated above ( and this is when i wish i knew how to drag a quote in here. lol)
that none of us (artist on song) heard the others verses.
we just gave our interp. of LIBERATION. scroll up read that

QUESTION2:
whats the fundamental diff between my verse and andre's or big boy' s- besides mine being longer?

i bet if you answer you'll see the point.

you didnt think it fit . its cool
now what do we do?
"i saaaaiid , FINE WIT ME!" - color purple / mis sophia

and let me clear this up .
we are having an EXCHANGE of energy here .. all of us.
debate is healthy .

"artist should stay away from the internet" lol

no hurt feelings. and thank you for the exchange.

>NOW
>when i asked you if you knew what liberation was, you said
>yes but did not define it.

asking someone if they know what liberation is, is not asking someone to define it. its actually pretty condescending, but a grain of salt....

>again .
>what is liberation.?

hehehehe.... okay so to understand liberatioin one must understand the yin to its yang, i'll here represent as the perception of things inhibiting one from the full potential of their being. in a word lets say oppression. you can have personal oppression and social oppression, even global oppression. as such liberation can be personal, social or even global. even further perhaps racial (homosapien) liberation, perceptual liberation... blah blah blah. thing about liberation is that it exists only as a reaction to the oppression. would someone who's not oppressed need worry about liberation? and so our ideas about liberation are all theoretical until we put them to practice, the practice of actually liberating.

there's stages right, we work through those things that personally oppress us, opening us up to those things that socially oppress us, opening up further to what globally oppresses us.

the thing about your verse IMHO, is not that its so much about personal liberation, but its about personal liberation from oppression you chose to put yourself into. the trials and tribulation of fame... that was a choice. and in the scheme of things you being a person fighting on that social/global level of liberation, you gotta expect that type of stuff. i'm talking here about the hatred, the lack of faith in your ability to stay true, the people that still see you as just another niggress no matter how much you achieve. those are things you gotta expect signing the dotted line. and so i don't really want to hear about how hard that is for you. no offense. i know its hard. i know of many the artist that has struggled with those issues, but its par for the course. not something i see as being relevant to the discussion of social liberation. if you didn't want those things, you shouldn't have signed on the dotted line, and found another way of achieving your mission.

>what does it mean to liberate or be liberated ?

at the end of the day only we can free we. we individually must free ourselves from personal oppressors so that we collectively can free ourselves from social oppressors, so that we can free ourselves from global oppressors. you are among many trying to share the light, but none of you are liberators.

>QUESTION2:
>whats the fundamental diff between my verse and andre's or big
>boy' s- besides mine being longer?

for one, neither of them are in this exchange. i would have critique for dre as well (not worrying about what another nigga think, is not liberation), less so for big boi. that said as i stated above the thing that set your verse apart is that its about an oppression you chose to put yourself into.

>what else.

any invalubale resources you found along the way in the education of your children? books, models etc...

i'd also like to take this time to shout out asoyini - see what happens when you start talking to artists (e if you're bored you can search the forum for what this is referencing).

Hi E.

just a short question, when and were will honey be released on a CD ? Or will it be only downloadable ? As I can find it nowhere in the net to buy.
Can't wait to get it in my hands, as all the new stuff (Real Thang, Your Mind etc.) which I got as live or demo versions sounds very good, even with poor sound quality.
Hope to see ya on tour in Europe.
95100, Do you think you will do another live album?

Cause your live joint is one my Favorite LIVE albums of all time
Next Lifetime always gives me chills when I heard it.

also:

Mama's Gun helped me through some ill times for real. When it dropped my i had a fire in July of that year and lost everything I ever had in my life except the guess cargos i had on, my wallet, and a mechanical pencil that was in my pocket.I aint even have any shoes. By the years end I would have lost 2 close friends and 2 family members. If it wasnt for a cd man,and a copy of mamas gun i was finally able to cop i prolly would have lost my mind. The crazy part about it is that when I think of 2000 Mama's Gun is one of the 1st memories that come to mind. It was just such an inspirational lp for real. I am sure you hear that 1000x a day and i didnt but it just brought back memories for me.

I look forward to the new LP

I'd like to expound on my thoughts of:

>"The music is the star," says Erykah,
>"I just laid down my vocals and let the
>music breathe while the melodies tell the stories."

and exactly why I feel it is the BIGGEST load of bullshit I've ever heard.

You simply CANNOT create a masterpiece and then come behind that with some writer's block type bullshit.

Performance artist or not, you gotta come with the dope shit.

Erykah, please understand that I am not a hater. My comments were not those designed to applaud any failure - the wackness of "Worldwide Underground" hurt me two-fold because I kept the faith that you would come with the same strength of "Mama's Gun", and THEN I had to defend that fuckery to other people who KNEW I was a fan/supporter of your work:

"What's up wit ya girl Erykah, tREB? All that "I-I-I-I-I-I" shit...It sounded like the CD was skippin' nigga!"

Yeah, you never asked me to, but in this business, you KNOW you have die-hard fans that want to see you win regardless of what bullshit or greatness you put out. That's how I feel about Mary J. Blige and Jill Scott. The spirit they exude on their recordings and in their performances keeps me supporting them regardless of how their efforts come out.

So, in reply to your comment of "fuck you", instead of the smart-ass reply of "name a time and place - I'm down to get fucked by you and start wearing crocheted hats and pants", I'll just say that I wish you peace and I hope this album is better than "Worldwide Underground".

I'm ready to accept the fact that you're not consistent enough to drop another great album like "Mama's Gun". If it turns out that I'm wrong and your new album IS the shit, I'll GLADLY be the first person to step up to the bar and put hot sauce on my foot and begin a chow-down.

Sincerely Yours,

tREBLEFREE

P.S. - Don't forget to bitch-slap all of your yes-men and yes-women on your way down.

if you posted something and someone replied that your post was "the BIGGEST load of bullshit I've ever heard", you wouldn't take that as an acrimonious, fighting words style of reply?

not the best way to lead into an honest critique, fam.

First of all, that statement was copied and pasted from the first post where Ms. Wright handed out "fuck you"s like she would throw CDs from the stage at a show...

That post was locked, so I replied to it here - hence my title...

>if you posted something and someone replied that your post was
>"the BIGGEST load of bullshit I've ever heard", you wouldn't
>take that as an acrimonious, fighting words style of reply?

I take it for granted that everybody who posts here has at LEAST a high school education and can read and comprehend at no less than a 10th grade level.

That being said, no, I would not take it as a - how you say:

>acrimonious, fighting words style of reply

because that all depends on what follows it.

I can respect somebody calling my music bullshit IF they back up their opinion with solid reasoning.

"I ain't feelin' it man" while acceptable is REALLY weak.

As you can see, in THIS post, I gave her FULL reasoning why I felt that "Honey" was not up to par. It's almost like Jesus creates the heavens and earth, and you ask him for a blessing and he tells you "Sorry, I'm all out. No soup today."

WTF?

Anyways, yeah, in my opinion, I didn't post that to bait her - Erykah comes here...what...once a year? If that? I posted that to start a discussion.

Me and the wife love ya...it's us with the NJ/TX license plate CD cover...completing our album (helluva feeling)...we got an event popping off called the SPEAK-UP....next one will be at the Liquid Lounge, and we're holding it in conjunction with the Beatdown....

both events are live contests....Speak-Up is MCs spitting written work, not freestyles, Beatdown is a producer battle held by Rob Viktum...as a matter of fact, HeadKrack is competing in this one, so if you're interested or even in town, holla at him for more details and whatnot...Dec. 6, Liquid Lounge....I know you got an ear in the lil underground scene out here, we trying to make it do what it do...a blessing from you would ice the cake lovely...ether way, can't wait for the new shit...

At one of your ATL shows a few years ago, I was really going through some rough shit in my life. And you did "Dear Mysery". It really took me through it....but at the end, i think the song says something like " Let me go" or something like that. And i just felt the heavyness of my problems lift off of me. Badu, you need to release that song! Some of us need that really bad to get through some of the shit we gotta go through in life. My point is that taking to much on your plate concerning this world (in ref. to her def poetry jam piece)and dealing with your own personal life can destroy some. Change is a slow process and consuming youself with it can be madding. Not that I know whats in her mind.

The facts are that she has not release much since that first solo project.

You have already put out a lot of material. Please continue.

I understand. It's an up hill battle that not only artist but everybody, me speaking as a black American, have to deal with. What I'm saying is I wish or hope she doesnt let the criticisms get to her. As u maybe can tell I make statements and stand by myself everyday all day.

I'm sure she loves making music. I wish she would just still make music and say fuck the criticism. Easier said than done, but thats why I wish and hope she can pull it off.

Said beautifully.

But to keep my sanity I'll play my part in the advancement respect the oppositions gangster and the games they play. To me thats how we got in this position in the first place, be complacent and wishing and hoping others will see that light and stop playing meaningless games. Even the most noble must keep venom.

And I love you Erykah. I just finished reading this whole entire thread and I have a newfound respect for you.

I'm so glad that Lauryn was brought up in the discussion because I was talking about her earlier. I'll admit that I wasn't the biggest Lauryn fan in the beginning of her career, but as I watch her now...it's like if you don't get or FEEL Lauryn NOW then your not living. It's as simple as that.

Thanks so much. Can't wait for the next project!

so 36 is the age of the good spread now *does a 5.11 year count down*

whats your overall goal in music? In other words when its all said and done what do you want folks to remember most about your music? where do you see yourself continuing w/ film(act/produce/direct/write)and other arts?

95162, RE: eryKAHBAdu gets THE LESSON
Posted by ya Setshego, Mon Nov-19-07 02:26 PM
1. Why did you highlight KAHBA in your name, and what does that mean?

2. Is it true, in your opinion, that as a Pisces, you'll do one thing to take you to the next level professionally, as well as personally, then you will turn right around and do something to send you in the opposite direction?

3. What community work are you doing in Dallas? Prince made reference to it in an interview, and I was wondering to what he was referring.

4. What are your most and least favorite things about being a mother?

5. Do you formally consult the Ancestors before making music, or do you wait for it to come to you through dreams? how does that work, exactly?

Lastly, I just wanted to say thank you. If you write what w/ you write w/ your fans/admirers in mind, then, thanks. I truly believe that many of your songs speak TRUTH to Sistahs, in a way that maybe our generation had not heard before, from someone FROM that same generation.

Wanted to let you know I really dig the music. I get your work more than I get any other artist's work. I get it without having to think about it. As a fellow Pisces and artist, your work has left quite an impact on me. "Didn't Cha Know" just gets me in so many places. Thank you much for that.
So check it, I downloaded a live bootleg of yours, I think it was a concert you performed on your birthday. I ain't too inclined to be downloading artist's whole albums, especially cats I like. Way I figure, I don't generally pay more than $10 for a CD, so that means I owe you $10. How you figure I can get that ten spot to ya?
Also, do you have any other acting projects lined up? I was a big fan of yours in Cider House Rules, and I'm still trying to find a copy of the joint you did with the X-Files guy.
Looking forward to your new work.
Take this positive energy with you into new endeavors.

when i was a kid you came out with baduism...which my parents bought and i listened to while i played my video games. i remember the way your melodies got to me....they still do and i keep on listening and listening since then. some of your stuff i understand, some of it, well, i have no IDEA, but all of it i learn from. what i want to know is-- do you have your performances in mind before you write your music, or do you write it and fuck with it when you do it live. you record beautifully, but, MAN are you even more amazing in person. i dont know what you're feeling on stage and i wish i did, but is that feeling coming from your music, or is your music coming from that feeling?

The last Album I felt that I HAD to listen to all the way through is The Love Below just because every song was tied into each other so well like a movie... So when I get the time I def have to listen to at least three or four together... just feels right...

so...

How do you like your albums heard, chopped up or all the way through? and why?
95218, How much did you have to deal with a compromise?
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Nov-19-07 05:03 PM

I love your music, ever since Baduism. i just wonder if every album you made was made exactly how you envisioned it.

By the way, I saw you twice this year: 1st on New Year's at the House of Blues LA -and- 2nd in San Diego at Humphrey's by the Bay...
Both amazing performances

I know you probably have lurked and seen some of the OK gathering photo's of these guys here.

You may or may not be aware of the General discusion female concensus of what/who they are attracted to but, do you differ in opinion, as you have firsthand experience in interacting with the average joe, then onto the more affluent/eccentric personalites (Common's, Dre 3000's, DOC's)

Lastly, why have none of those guys wifed you?

I never understood that, somebody need to 'Bret Farve' Dre 3000 for that!

"Oh, I see, ya niggas is on that bullshit"

i want to personally apologize to you. the black expo used to be such a fun, entertaining, and educating festival, but has now been completely turned into a corporate event, and now the people who attend the concerts may not even like the artist, they are just attending because they were given free tickets.

don't get me wrong, I enjoy every experience that we have shared together when you are on stage. ive seen my favorite artist (mc apples) all around the country: two times in houston (waiting in the cold by the tour bus and at the skybar where you hugged me like i was your little cousin that just got out the pen) ,once in philly when you met me and my pops, once in the chi (couldn't get backstage that time), and new years in atlantic city (classic!)....

i was so embarassed to be affiliated with my city after they rushed you off the stage...the crowd didn't want to stand up during the show (and you know badu don't like niggas sittin down at the show!).....how did you feel about the show?...... see you at the next one. luv ya kid

with worldwide underground i "got" it, it's a release... breath, i get it. i know, the original post, "your a performance artist" BUT at some point and time your going to have to write actual songs. Will we see this on this album?

then again maybe that's what you've been doing all along...

95273, have you ever considered putting out a live album of all new material?
Posted by DubSpt, Tue Nov-20-07 12:47 AM
While I havent been fortunate enough to see you live in person, every clip I see of you performing live only makes me love the songs more.

And it isn't completely unfounded, artists like Poco and Neil Young have done it, not to mention that sections of Purple Rain were done live.

Also, if "Tyrone" is any indication (and I think it is) people who see it and hear it for the first time live will still respond well.

E kaaro Ms. Badu my sister,

I just wanted to first express to you how much I love your art/gift and I appreciate so much that you decided to share it with the world. You are truly an inspiration and a free spirit and I admire you for that, your light is blinding. Well, now for my question(s?, on Baduizm the song Certinley you sing, is that song pertainig to the maafa( slave trade)? I ask b/c you mentioned something about it in the live Baduizm " when coming over to amerika we had to change alot of things, but we didn't give nobody permission"( did you try to hide the meaning by saying "I don't need no nigga rollin' over looking after me..."? if not what is the meaning?).
95287, RE: eryKAHBAdu gets THE LESSON
Posted by cguthrie86, Tue Nov-20-07 05:06 AM
Oh, and I also wanted to ask you about the song "I want you". That beat at the end with the guitar solo was Ca-razy (very Jimi)!!! Sista please tell me you are going to use that piece on a whole song b/c that little snippete wasn't enough! It felt like you wanted to keep it going at the end ( " Just b/c I tell you I love you, don't mean that I do"), you know you did mama, gon' head and make a whole song outta that...throw it in on the end of the new CD I won't be mad.

Why did you take such an aggressive stance toward the term 'neo soul'? I wasn't in love with the term, because it had issues with it being marketing term, but I realize that it seemed like it still tried to steer peeps towards progressive music you wouldn't hear otherwise and is still better than anything on radio right now (in my opinion). Do you mind being looked at as a neo soul artist?
95298, RE: eryKAHBAdu gets THE LESSON
Posted by analoguegirl, Sat Nov-24-07 09:50 PM
earlier in this post i said this:

by the way
the term neo soul was created by Kedar Massenburg the former manager of D'angelo and former prez of kedar/ motown .
this man signed me in 1995 after hearing baduism in its entireity minus the roots .

THE NAME TOOK A LIFE OF ITS OWN.

im a theatrical soul singer with a mc background i sing soul music influenced by everthing.
d has a church backgroud with a heavy soul influence . i think hes a diamond who would just rather be coal.

hope this answers

and let me say, i consistantly enjoy how you irreverently mix styles/genres that the music industry imagines as disparate. the knock on "danger" taken together with the transitions on, say, "green eyes" makes for a catalogue that both rewards listeners with something complex and challenges how we think about categories. keep doing your thing, lil mama.

Ok, so she's releasing 3 different albums in 08. All of us will buy'em and Im sure they will all do well. But! What if one is does much better than the others?

Will that influence what she does next time around? Probably not, she makes what she feels. So much for that question..answered myself LOL

Erykah...did you ever get your tapes you lost in Tokyo airport? I really looked for those on some Hero ish!! :-)

When you doin Bali again? INdra is my ace...missed you by a couple of days last time! You should distribute Dimi's new record on your label in the U.S.

First of all:

Thank you for taking the time to post on this forum.

Second of all:

I have been influenced and inspired by your music both as a performer and a thinker. I have struggled to negotiate being a musical artist in an academic setting. Increasingly, I have grappled with constructions of genre and categories as ways of trying to explain or represent music, often obscuring the human realities behind the art. Simultaneously, I struggle constantly with the dilemmas of trying to produce music that can have a positive social impact. My personal interest has driven me to pursue these questions in an academic forum. As an artist that I respect and admire, one that does not fit easily into conventional boxes of genre, and whose song messages are both thought-provoking and socially important, I find you to be a compelling example through which to explore these subjects. This semester I have undertaken this exploration in the context of a project questioning “Neo-soul” as a genre. I give a lot of weight to artist’s own representations of themselves, and though it is often necessary, I find it difficult at best to discuss musical artists without being able to hear many things in their own words. I have attached my proposal (which I threw together last minute) and I would really appreciate any comments or ideas that you can offer on these themes.

Paper Proposal:

Kedar Massenburg, the president of Motown Records from 1997 to 2004, coined the term “Neo-soul” to describe novel trends emerging from the influences of hip-hop and jazz. The term has come to represent a large body of work by a diverse group of artists (Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Meshell Ndegeocello, Jill Scott, and others). The movement is characterized by hybridity and innovative negotiations of genre conventions. Within this movement, there is a great deal of collective projects and collaboration. Beneath the broad stroke of coherence uniting artists labeled as being a part of the “Neo-soul” movement, there is a great deal of diversity. There are radically different approaches to tradition, instrumentation, production, and live performance. Many artists active in this movement are using their music as a form of social critique and radical intervention in discourses on race, sexuality, and gender. Collaborating artists often individually promote strongly contrasting value systems. By examining different approaches to musical experimentation, divergent discourses on race, gender, and sexuality, debates over authenticity and representation, and collaboration I am questioning the coherence of “Neo-soul” as a movement and the limits of this categorization.

To explore these questions I will rely on primary sources like musical pieces, lyrics, liner notes, interviews, and music videos. In addition I will look at secondary sources that take a musicological and sociological perspective on this movement, such as Jeff Chang’s “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation” and Lori Burn’s “Disruptive Divas: Feminism, Identity and Popular Music”. I will be using Okayplayer.com as a source that represents an innovative blend of artist’s personal accounts and commentary, news, fan and public perspectives, critical reviews and discussions. This forum represents an active online community that connects fans and artists, and it will be an interesting place to study.

this is a fun(ny) question, so don't be offended.

I have a friend from Dallas, and he pronounces certain words differently.

Mainly, words with "er" or "urr" sounding vowels he pronounces as "air".

Worry sounds like wary. Murray sounds like Mary.

Now I think it's cool, I'm just curious if that's a Texas or Dallas thing, cuz I haven't heard it elsewhere in the south.

and btw, I dig the new music and i think you've handled all of these questions very gracefully. thanks a mil.

Hope I'm not too late but thought I'd try. For the record, I love all your albums & pretty much think each one is better than the last although I like Mama's Gun a little better than WU. "Bump It," "I Want You," & "Back in the Day" are 3 of my all-time favorite songs though. I was wondering if you were doin' anything else with Sa-Ra for your new albums? I need that funk! Also, check out my music & let me know what u think, if u get the chance (myspace link below). I know that's a shot in the dark but it would mean the world to me. Peace Queen.

really dont have much to add to it.

one of my things to do is to go to one of your live shows, ive had two opportunities...both at bad financial times but alas they were there.

at the last i drove to the place just to be discouraged by how many people were there and figured its sold out better drive back home.

then i decided to take a walk and ended up walking all the way to the venue, up to the ticket booth where i found out i was 3 people too late :/

but i did take nice pics so ill share those.

95341, will somebody lock this thread?
Posted by , Fri Dec-14-07 12:17 PM
yeah, people politely said they didnt like her song and this batty bitch thru a e-tantrum.

then somebody hipped her to the fact she was throwing a hissyfit on her main fansite's fans when she has a record coming out in a couple of months
so this pretentious egocentric-ass (bo)ho comes back with her voice lowered flashing peace signs and shit.

fyi, nobody is gonna buy your record or anybody elses record on here so theres no point trying to cover up your true colors & make ammends.
