79664, Blackalicious/ Talib Kweli / KRS One @ #'s in Houston

First of all, who went? Second of all, you gotta love the transvestite prostitutes working the track in the midst of Montrose at 2:00 am.

Anyway, the show started promptly (surprisingly) at 9:00 pm. Local favorites , K-otix took the stage and the last two times I've seen them I must say that I was impressed with their show. Good rapport with the crowd, good energy on stage, and even more inpressive is that a good portion of the crowd seems to be legitimate fans. Me and the Mrs. catch about twenty-thirty minutes of their show.

They go off, Blackalicious takes the stage. I saw them last time at Numbers, and there were a good number of folks there to see them. This white cat in a wife beater behind me was too crunk, knew all the lines jumping up and down on my back, I had to give him a pound just cause he wasn't the typical head-nodder that's too cool to act a fool. Gift of Gab's skills always amaze, he's incredibly quick-tongued and has almost impeccable enunciation. Their back up singers were good, they rocked some crowd favorites, and new material and before I knew it they were gone.

I just wanna say that the way Talib Kweli came onto the stage was pure genius. Blackalicious kind of sapped my energy, but Talib's dj started spinning some old school classics, Luther, Teddy, Michael Jackson (and I think all the black people enjoyed it) etc. but the thing about it was that it brought the energy of the crowd up, and talib just kind of walks out on stage, the dj does a minimal intro and Talib just starts murdering it. He has great stage presence, his flow is emmaculate, and he held it down. No flashy show, just straight up rhyming, and his back up singers were incredible! He also did new material, one song was great and the other "Prowl" I believe was too serious for the show imo. My appetite was satiated at this point.

Bonus points for Houston's own O.G. Style for taking the stage and knowing that brevity can sometimes be a good thing. I mean I like "I Know How to Play 'em" but if they would have stayed on stage longer than they had, it would have been annoying.

The crowd obviously came to see KRS One, cause we had been up front the entire time and the population up front got real tight. When he took the stage, he was bitching about mic levels, music levels, wanting everything turned up, and while I was slightly annoyed (cause everything sounded fine), the end result of greater volume for KRS-One was a good thing. He did some new material (which is everything after "I Got Next" to me) and one thing I can say about KRS is that he knows that he sounds great over huge drums. The energy in the crowd grew with each set to peak at KRS' arrival, once he started into his catalogue, you forget about some of the gems buried in their like the lethargic anthem "Ah Yeah". I couldn't stay though, the kiddies await, last song I heard was "My Philosophy".
