78515, Lyricist Lounge presesnt Underground Airplay....
Posted by jelani, Tue Oct-16-01 06:27 PM
I bought it today and it sounds pretty ill. They went back to their old format of presenting mc's not hyped by the mainstream. Jane Doe suprised me with a cut called "Bisexual", she pulls the skeletons out the closet. Mos Def tries to take it back 20 years, but I forgive him. Asheru and Blue Black, Hemisphere, Maspyke, and Self Scientific laced it with some ill tracks. Masta Ace who used to do his thing back in the days came with a lame track, sounding like slim shady. Kardinal Offishall brought the pain. Pharoahe Monch, Xzibit, inspectah Deck and Skillz joined forces.

You get 31 tracks to bounce your head to. However Dj. Spinbad interlaced them with smooth mixes which cut the songs too short at times. But for the production and the talent that's brought together on this cd I would say it's worth the buy. Let me know what you think

The Jane Doe joint is hot along with Zion I and others. It's got some mediocre material, but there are some bangers on here too...

no doubt, Jane does her thang, when I listened to the track the second time I realized that her concept was ill.

No disrespect intended...

I have to break with the pack on this one. I think Jane Doe's track is wack. There's enough of these porn-star/stripper turned emcee females out there. As far as I'm concerned there needs to be more female emcees who actually have something to say -- like Mystic, like Rah Digga, Lauryn Hill, etc. We don't need anymore of these female emcees who try to sell albums by showing there tits & asses in their videos and on their album covers, trying to take advantage of the male libido to sell their product.

Sorry if y'all don't agree, but I just had to speak my mind on the matter. Other than that, I think the album is pretty tight.

Peace & One Love, Y'all.

Greetings.

To answer your question, I have NOT followed Jane Doe and her work before -- maybe this track is a diversion from her usual style, but I couldn't tell you whether or not that's true.

BUT, I think that subject-matter such violence against women, a bi-racial woman being sub-par to a woman has two Black parents is just a waste of my time. I'm all about the positivity. Period. Hip-hop has picked on women enough, hip-hop has glorified violence enough, and it's time to move on. There are enough artists out there who are trying to elevate the knowledge and wisdom of their listeners (such as okayplayer artists). I might be out of line, but as far as I'm concerned, that Jane Doe track would fit right into a Cash Money Millionaires disc.

I'll quote my man, Kweli, on this one: "... every emcee grab a pen and write some conscious lyrics to tell the children; I'll say it again: every emcee find you a pen and drop some conscious shit for our children..."

Peace, Ya'll.

One Love,

halfthejob

PS The Mystic track on the disc is tight -- she's a female emcee who's worth my time.

The song is called Bisexual, but if you didnt get it listen here. She is relating drugs to women, her first is Mary Jane, then a stripper named Ecstacy, whose parents were smack and crack, she thought that her friend Angel Dust had her back. Get it? At the end this is why she says "Now I'm more confused than before".

JANE DOE kicks it with KWELI. She is on the TWICE INNA LIFETIME on the BLACK STAR album.

It's just funny that you quote KWELI at the end. Just an observation!

Boogie Man tries to rip Masta Ace, but Ace kinda handles him pretty nasty.
78525, Yeah!!!!

I thoroughly enjoy Masta's track, he brought it Boogie, and way more people know him than just that Buckshot and Special Ed track. Besides, even though the sample from My Fair Lady sounded nice, it was pretty pointless.

Obie Trice's shit is real tight on it too. He's got that "I'm a relaxed, but real serious and dangerous motherfucker" kind of flow. It's pretty enjoyable.

Zion I's joint is dope... I cannot wait 'til Steve and them drop Underwater Slang on the world.(I think that is what the new Zion I cd is supposed to be called) Jane Doe is indeed hot on here too.I am also feeling the Self-Scientific track, the Killa Priest shit is cool, and definitely the Obie Trice...

78533, Mos Def sound's lame....
Posted by jelani, Sat Oct-20-01 08:15 AM
I think he tried to bring back to the beginning's but the track was too long. I found myself hitting the forward button, and I never did that to a Mos Def track.

I wasn't really feeling his track, his flow seems kind of tight like he's holding back, unlike when he rocked with Flipmode
78541, RE: LORD HAVE MERCY
Posted by lazyboi, Mon Oct-29-01 05:26 AM
you thought he was holding back on this song? i'm listening to the song right now.
the hook seems kinda simple, but the lyrics. he's putting hella energy in those. any more enrgy and he'd be chocolate chip fu.

i think he and rah were the best out of flip mode.

on a side note. i really want to hear him and charli 2na on a track

I love it. wtf? is rah on this track? she must be on the full version, i wanted to hear her.

Roll out, who got hyped just by hearing optimus prime? they should have kept kutting his voice for the hook

i can't believe he/she said that shit:

"bernard, not to talk about your teeth or anything, but if you want to floss i got a rope in my truck."
