62160, The Official Lessonhead Armchair A&R Post Posted by taygravy, Tue May-30-06 08:00 AM
"Jay lost." "Nas lost." "LB flopped." "G-Unit sucks." "^^^ not at all a baller." "These south niggas is wack."
Just a few things that are wrong with music today according to lessonheads.
You want your shot to make it right? Well, here it is:
List any group, regardless of genre, and, acting as their A&R, tell them how you would remake their career, and what you would do differently to make them 'successful,' or if they're already selling big numbers, what you'd do to keep and/or increase their sales.
Some of you cats make real interesting observations when you're not being assholes...if I see some real talk up here I'll gladly pass this post on to any of the cats y'all list that I have connections to....as well as pass it to their A&R's...lol
Since I'm kicking off the post, I feel its only right to start at home.
First group: Little Brother.
Go.
(I can't wait to see what you niggas say....)

62163, nothing is wrong with Amel as a singer, But...... Posted by Airbreed, Tue May-30-06 01:28 PM
...she needs an ecletic base of producers for her albums. she's been doing it quite nicely with her husband at the boards on almost every track. But his style and sound stunts her growth as a potentially iconic R&B songstress.
- mary eventually left puffy at some point of her career and look how far her decision to expand her music has taken her. if she stayed with him, she would have been another has-been early 90's hip-hop R&B act.
- chaka went solo after rufus and her career and music ended up being far more successful than during her tenure with rufus.
...although Amel went solo after groove theory, she hasn't REALLY gone solo yet. while she was with groove theory, she had one producer backing her music and in effect, stuck her in her niche of R&B music. then, after she moved on to go as a solo act, instead of working with a broad range of musicians and producers, she trancended into another monotonous duo relationship.
Amel has proven time and time again that her talents shine brighter working with various producers, outside of GT and laru...
- roots - boney james - sweetback - etc.
...and it is these musicians and producers who challenge her talents and bring the BEST out of her. but working with one dude only contains her talents as one independant effort, and nothing beyond that.
As a longlife fan of hers, I would like to hear Amel work with other producers on her albums. she needs to break into a new sound that will not only compliment her songwritting but showcase all sides of her talents.
I respect her being an independent artist since it means that she has most, if not complete control over her own content and distribution. However, being an indie can also be a burden since it make some artists commercially complacent and in a manner of speaking, shadows them in a poor light as not wanting to take any chances and always trying to play it safe.
I realize that the music industry is a bitch and can be very cruel and underhanded. If artists didn't have to deal with the level of bullshit that goes on in the industry, they'd prolly all be independents. Yet, for most, the money is where its at, and most indie artists aren't as finaically fortunate as most major artists.
Yet by challenging the mainstream structure and habits of it's listeners, it's the struggle and determination to face the drama head on, that can guarantee the kind of success that has eluded her for so many years.
mind you, i'm not slanting indie artists at all. But true success can only come from playing that role with the majors.
For example.... i think amel should take notes from will.i.am.
the black eyed peas started as a unknown hip hop group from los angeles and rooted a well established fan base among most underground audiences (including myself). but eventually, they moved beyond the underground and ended up one of the biggest pop acts in the world.
will.i.am. said it best when he was interviewed on MTV about the criticims about the BEP's selling out. this was when "where is the love" was a big single for BEP, as well as thier crossover point as a group. Will said (not verbatim), that the music that he's doing now is done with not only a message but, with the intent of allowing him to introduce the kind of music HE likes. In effect, in order to get the mainstream audiences who don't listen to...
- mos and kweli - q-tip - the roots
.... will is in effect, feeding mainstream audiences piece by piece the kind of music will is known for (via the underground -- back to front era). and he will be able to introduce them to it by way of what is the popular standard in mainstream music. and slowly, that is exactly what will's been doing.
- on monkey business... he has a track with talib kweli/cee-lo/q-tip by way of introcducing them to the 'new' BEP fan base who generally listen to the popular standards in music.
- will.i.am produced sergio mendes album by way of allowing him to introduce artits like Erykah Badu to the sergio mendes fan base who generally listen to brazillan standards and another standards in music. - he did a track with busta rhymes by way of will.i.am re-intrdoucing his own name into the busta rhymes audience who generally listen to rap music and watch 106 & park.
therefore, one begats the other.
everything will is doing is from a independent standpoint, within a mainstream marketing stragegy. and its a very intelligent and savvy way of maintaining his success within all levels of the music industry.
will.i.am is playing THAT role. and he proved that sometimes you just can't get away with playing it safe. and within the current atmosphere of the music industry, there really hasn't been much of a handful of indie artists who became TRULY successful.
and i know that Amel wants to make the kind of music she wants to make. she made that clear when she bounced from sony. but she's only going to be making her brand of music for herself, her family and the small fanbase she has. and that is all well and good but, she's only playing to the in house crowd. if she has any interest to go further beyond the line her husband and brice drew in the sand for her, she has to play the role within mainstream predictibility, without selling her talents away to substandard mediocracy.
and she can do it long enough so that she can bit by bit, introduce the kind of music that her talents were built on with a brand new audience, on top of the one that's been with her since the beginning.
anyways, those are my two cents.

maybe have 9th come out and DJ a few of your shows
I was taken back when I first saw you guys last summer in San Diego and
there was no 9th Wonder. Shit was still hype as hell; you and the JL
cats know how to put on a entertaining show. That performance at 'Canes
definitely impressed the "no 9th" outta me and made me hyped for the
Minstrel Show.
for some supplemental income Phonte, you should publish your myspace
blogs in some magazine; Scratch Magazine guest columnist?!?? I would
get a subscription on the strength of that alone 'cause you got a ill sense of humor!!!

Your fans might hate it, but fuck 'em. They troglodytes anyway. I think y'alls shit got more of a universal appeal, but folk aint hearing it.
But if you continue doing what you do, that's cool too. Cus I love it all. I just don't see this scene supporting y'all the way you need to be for an extended period of time.
That hate factor is STRONG.
Eventually you gonna have to diversify that audience.

Put out a 'Laffy Taffy' clone, followed it up with a 'I think they like me' clone and got Romeo on the remix. Would've got you some exposure from the Romeo/Bow Wow beef...more exposure than you did get anyway lol.
On the real though, I think LB is doing fine. Musically, aint nobody seeing you guys at right now. Atlantic should have put money behind the project as opposed to paying god knows how much for Just Blaze and Scott Storch beats for the Fat Joe album. I think from a musical perspective, Minstrel Show was excellent but maybe it lacked something to hook new listeners.
I honestly don't know what an A&R could do for LB, cos I know you aint about to sacrifice your principles for radio spins....I guess you're on your own!!! De La Soul didn't exactly blow up radio and make diamond albums either - and they are straight up legends. Same with Tribe. You guys are on the same path IMO

that could be a LB callin card, cus yall got the chops to pull it off, PLUS its palletable with TRL/106 & Pawk without even aimin for them, just doin what yall do. imo
|
62193, Yup, I don't know why he doesnt. He may be scared Posted by ChuckNeal, Tue May-30-06 10:29 AM
of the "why you singin like a bitch nigga" backlash. I say fuck it, if you like singin and you can, then do. I do both myself and dudes and chicks have liked the result respectively. Granted Im not tryna do this professionally but I think Tay and LB would see the same result.
|
62194, honestly...I just feel its not time for Phonte 4000 yet.. Posted by taygravy, Tue May-30-06 08:09 PM
It's too much more I want to accomplish as an MC, before I even think about attempting a LoveElsewhereBoxx...
And really, I'm not a singer. I appreciate all you cats giving me love on the vocals but I'm really not a singer. Bilal is a sanga. D. Brock is a sanga. Percy is not....lol
And not b/c I'm scared of any 'why this soft nigga singin?' backlash either. Singing is just not something I'm feeling right now, outside of arranging and maybe a little session work as a background vocalist.
|
62195, I can definitely respect that Posted by ChuckNeal, Tue May-30-06 09:46 PM
But in my opinion you have the skill to sing well enough to flip a hook or two at the least. I don't think you have to be a Bilal to make a great song vocally. But if you're not feelin it then there's no point in doing so.
|
62196, This is hard... Posted by scorpion, Tue May-30-06 09:25 AM
I think what holds you brothers back is that you get caught up in the "everyman" hip-hop ideology....
Hip-hop's appeal lies in the fact that the everyday brothers can relate to the artists....the cats who arent pretty boys, or dont have a ton of cash, arent super jocks, or cant dance see themselves reflected in Hip-Hop artists like yourself...
Your line in Nic's Groove summed it up...."I'm just an avergae cat/who go to work/freestyle(?)/and kick battle raps...."
the trick in all of this is that, while entertainers are lauded by their fans for being "down-to-earth", hip-hop has taken that concept to the extreme....and that extreme leads to anonymity...
meaning that dope emcee A starts to blend into dope emcee B...while dope lyrics are important, it isnt enough....
what ends up missing is distinct persona....aka image...
Hip-hop values pretend to deem "image" fake and unnecessary, quite the opposite is true....
you would never confuse Biz Markie and KRS, nor would you confuse Q-Tip and Pos....
each has their own unique image....a look, a style, a sound that sets them head and shoulders above the crowd....
the "keep it real" era of 93-96 re-inforced this "just another n***a" hip-hop posturing...
its gotten so anonymous/bland to the point that rappers wear plain white t-shirts....
ask yourself....how exciting is a plain white t-shirt?......
the plain white t-shirt could be a symbol for the MC of today...they no longer aspire to artistic greatness...nor do they wish to leave a mark on the world through the sheer force of their artistry.....
they want to make money, smoke weed, and fuck girls....
I ask MC's all the time: "How wil you be remebered in history?" "Are you an artist or just a dude who raps?" "What are you trying to communicate to the people?" "What will the next generation of Hip-hop get from a song like "Mashin' Fools Out'(or insert any other generic rap song title)?"
Most of them stumble all over themselves for answers, because simply, they dont know....
This is the age of the Plain White T-Shirt MC....he raps for the sake of rapping, actual music is an afterthought....he's politically correct(he talk about killin' n***as, doggin chicks, and selling crack, but he'll dare not diss his local politician...or the top-selling MC's in the game), he's safe....
LB has made strides away from that bunch, but still feels a nagging loyalty to them...
The fact is, Tay....you're NOT an average cat....
You are a better MC than most in the game, you have a sharp sense of humor, you're smart, you're likeable, and you can even sing.....
I'd challenge you NOT to fall in with the Plain White T-Shirts....to be more BOLD..to go where other MC's at your level arent going....
DONT apologize for The Minstrel Show concept....you DONT have to apologize to Bun-B(nor do you have to diss him).....
SAY the crazy shit you wanna say....what I'm saying is GO THERE....
Put the outer reaches of your creativity on record...
Did you see Akeelah and the Bee....that quote that Fishburne had her read was dead on what I'm trying to say....we shouldnt be afraid to shine.....
Musically, I'm not going to diss 9th here....read that 5 times before moving on to the next sentence....
Im about to offer what is called constructive criticism....
With 9th being the only musical component in Little Brother, its up to him to match all of the color that you and Pooh bring lyrically....
But he tends to paint in muted colors...his beats will nod your head, but they dont make one ill out....
I would challenge 9th to expand his musical vision...to listen to more diverse kinds of records and study them--maybe he does, I dunno....maybe take up a chordal instrument like guitar or piano....
His workload will argue against any point I'm making...but Boom-Bap shit need not be all earth tones...The TShirt seeps into his beatmaking....
9th is one of a new breed of Hip-Hop producers known as a beat maker....which means that he sees and hears everything from a hip-hop perspective, which in turn narrows his artistic pallette....
as we all know, you could loop the right part of a flamenco record and it will be hip-hop as fuck, as is....this is where the classic breaks came from....but as Hip-hop has become more insulated we try to "hip-hop" other musics instead of incorporating their unique flavors into our mix....(EX: Timbaland's use of Indian/Arab music....)
its kinda like cooking....my mom could be a great cook...she could kill shit with salt, pepper and garlic powder...but what if she found a way to freak paprika and bay leaves? kna'mean????
When 9th finds the right sample, its MAGIC(Whatever You Say, Girl{yeah, I said "Girl"....})but other times it seems as if he's just chopping up whatever is clever....
I know that you guys tend to align yourself with ATCQ....and theyre a tricky group to understand....upon quick review, it looks like three regular heads that make classic Hip-Hop.....but the magic of ATCQ is making it LOOK that simple....
they had a charismatic and unmistakable front man, a SERIOUS dedication to MUSIC in general, not just Hip-Hop....they loved jazz, funk, rock, AND hip-hop--and all of it was reflected in their music but interpreted in their own style....they were qunitessential New York hip-hop, but NOT run of the mill...we KNEW they were different kinda cats.....
I would not have advised the Atlantic signing....square peg/round hole....a stronger indie would have been ideal....
I would also challenge your A-lists friends to put their money where their mouth is as far as support....(Yo, Ahmir, I appreciate you feeling our album....you need to put us on the next Roots joint, we'd rip shit!)
Yeah, man....I'm saying be 3Ft High De La with the shit, man...go all the way out....you're underground artists, what have you got to lose?...
I'm working on an album with tREBLEFREE, and I'm pushing for that kind of thing....it's hard....I come at him with these wild concepts and he says, "I dont understand" or "let me hear it after you write it..."
even the most creative of us get into that "Boombapbeatsrhymes" ennui....
we dont want to alienate folks....but if you LEAD the pack(like ATCQ, De La, NWA, PE, BDP, Kast)have done in the past, then they will be wherever you are....
Peace...

62208, I'll add to that with this Posted by Dove, Wed May-31-06 11:11 AM
I agree with everything Scorpion just said. One thing I think people forget is that Common went through the same kind of thing early in his career - kind of an identity crisis of sorts. The public at large didn't really know how to relate to him, regardless of how many affiliations he had. His music was great, he was a great emcee, but he wasn't getting the attention he deserved. At whatever point he got that ONE song that really put him over the top (I really think it was his video with Erykah that made people open their eyes) and from then on people started to care. Maybe it took Electric Circus for people to appreciate what he had to offer when he wasn't experimenting... who knows...
From an A&R perspective, I say LB is on the right track. You can't force an image, and I do feel like the group puts forth a sense of who they are as artists. All good things take time, and everything will fit into place as it should.
LB are still young men, still growing artistically and forming opinions and values that will take you to the next level. Now when people say "Little Brother" chances are likely that someone is going to take the time to tell them about you. It's a process, sometimes a long one, but it'll all come together for those platinum sales.

that would have been a perfect choice for a single and it still bang so it wouldn't have alineated all your fan base.
from seperate and equal I see Pooh got a great funny personality that he really didn't show on MS. I hope that comes out more on the next record.

62213, I called Phonte the Charles Barley of hip-hop before Posted by Alphabet, Tue May-30-06 10:21 AM
Cuz even though LB is trying to move on from that...I still think coming out with the Minstal Show, even though the intent was good, made things a up hill battle..
I wouldn't really put ya'll in that De La catagory, where them niggas back in the day has to fight at they shows all the time so show they was 'Real Niggas" Cuz I know ya'l been getting love from the Lil Wayne's, and the Mike Jones's and alot of people that 'you wouldn't think like LB"
BUt I think that "I siad it I ment it, bit my tounge for no one" steez kinda rubs peopel the wrong way..Slick Pulla from Jeezy's camp (good to see ya'll patched that up) Bun B (good to see ya'll patch that up adn did a song)
Moslty from staetment were cats was like "Hold up" is he talking about ME!?, do they think they better than me?" Minstal show!?!..IF you take a step back thats a harsh thing to call another black man a coon, when niggas think they the blackest thign walking the earth..
It just made a ironic turn because being on Atlantic Records ya'll ARE part of the Minstal show to some degree..
BUt I still root for ya'll niggas though, cuz I know ya'll in a damn if I do, damn if I dont situation..and man I grew up from a hip-hop background, in the 90's when street shit, real shit adn hip-hop was kinda intertwined like the Jay-Z's adn Nas's adn early Mobb Deeps, adn Wu-Tang, but I cnat fuck with all this backpack shit that out now, and ya'll about the only practicle ones left
I think ya'll got that Tribe position in todays game, wher at this point you keep feeding the fan base that really fucks with ya'll, you on the avaerage hip-hop listeners radar, but your like a "mainstream underground"..if that makes any scence. Jsut liek Tip and nem was back then..regardless of what cats say now, I do remember everybody didn't fuck with Tribe like that, not when that Gangsta Shit and the Bad Boy and Death Row era was popin, Tribe was the alternative, but they still has respect from the mainstream for the most part..

62217, "all for you" should have been a single Posted by hateration, Tue May-30-06 10:37 AM
as much as i wanted a video for "say it again" i think "all for you" as a single and an accompanying video is the type of song that would/could garner the attention y'all cats deserve
that subject matter is what is missing so much today and i feel people would gravitate to it
i was in the barber shop a few weeks ago (here in nj) and of course the subject of hip hop music and mcs comes up so these young cats were lauding how papoose is the illest right now, etc., because of his subject matter and how he crafts his rhymes
long story short, after about 30 minutes of playing stuff i had in my mp3 player to illustrate that there is a lot more to hip hop than what is forced upon them, these same young cats brains were in the spin cycle and the song they made me rewind 3 times was:
globetrottaz "love" yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=1708BB2035042636
there was a black woman in her late 30's in the chair asking about the song and the question i posed to everyone there was "why is stuff like this not on the radio?"
and i think the same thing could be said for "all for you"
how many people in our communities have "father" issues? how many cats are dealing with issues being fathers? how many women are having issues dealing with their children's fathers?
that song with a video that follows the song closely:
scene of pooh on the phone, etc. for his verse
scenes of fathers and children during the hook (mix d-brock vocal performance shots in)
maybe a scene of you looking through a photo album in an the empty house after your girl left photo album goes from that goes from your childhood to up to the present day with your son combined with the actual leaving, empty car seat, etc. shots
then maybe a family reunion cookout type scene for the vamping at the end show a bunch of different shots of generations of men (each shot the men bearing a family resemblance)
that sh!t would be illmatic, yo!!!! and SOOO appropriate and NECCESSARY in these times we live in
we need music like that, and people are hungry for it
(then i would follow up with a video for "shake it", but that's a whole other story)

what blasphemy have you to say today?

62218, strategic collaborations & timeless topical songs Posted by Quez, Tue May-30-06 10:59 AM
when i say strategic I'm not just talking "like-minded" artists. I mean do some strategic marketing collabortations and most importantly, deliver. Come together and flesh out a theme or concept. This will benefit both camps. Perhaps for a soundtrack.

62219, RE: Little Brother Posted by blue23, Tue May-30-06 11:29 AM
Presentation: Minstrel Show cover looked like you made it at Kinko's.
Soundscape: Either more diverse beats from 9th's catalog or outside production so the whole record doesn't have the same tempo.
MORE PHONTE!!! You need to hold down the first verses. Sing more hooks. Do whole songs on your own. For many people you're the main reason to check for LB.
Better single choice. Joe Scudda might be your man but that just made you an easy target for haters right off the bat. No reason he or any non-A list guest should be on your single.
Less skits - more music. Ya'll are funny but that shit is funny once and then it's old.

Improved just takes you deeper. Same lyrics, but more personal. Similar beat, but new drums. Similar style, but in a song with more 'movements' -- flipping several times in the same track.
As for the new shit, that's up to you... but people ain't kidding when the singing thing could really work. DAMN I miss the Pharcyde.

62221, make more introspective songs Posted by violence, Tue May-30-06 12:32 PM
definitely rock with more talented southern lyricists...you already mentioned TI and killer kill...facemob, devin, big boi, chamillionaire, weezy...anybody that can write their a$$ off in the south, y'all need to be linked up with...
i'd also like to see spin-off projects pairing y'all with legendary southern producers...phonte/organized noize collabo...that would be bananas...and there are many facets of the south, so a pooh/rjd2 collabo would be just as crazy, especially if them three 6 boys co-produce...hahaah....i love dreaming of ish that will probably never happen...

62224, i know it's too late for 'all for you' to be a single but... Posted by violence, Wed May-31-06 08:47 AM
1) y'all NEED more songs like that...people will really connect with y'all on a broader (no pun-o) level if you have more introspective songs like that
2) if 'all for you' could be made into a single, it needs a helluva video...maybe in some fantasy dream world you could get l-boogie to direct it (she lensed 'retrospect for life', if memory serves)...back in the real world, maybe somebody like the sista who directed 'get by' (what was her name? sanji? something like that).
in fact, a damn 'all for you' mini-movie as a feature in an LB live DVD would be crazy...like you could set up as a UBN for real, with 'all for you' as a serious drama that phonte lee, acclaimed black director, is trying to get aired on UBN, but the UBN head of programming Shawn J. Hov (played by a wigged, bespectacled Jay-Z) insists instead that the 'all for you' show is just too 'intelligent' for UBN's audience (LOL). Quentin Nintherino's (9th) violent plagued 'Dem Trap Boyz' pilot is picked up instead, featuring dramatic actor Pooh-Bone (draped head to toe in matching bandannas). interspliced with footage of this ongoing saga would be 'commercials' for such esteemed companies as '5th & Fashion' and ongoing emergency news broadcasts of rap group Little Brother 'tearing the club up' in live footage shot across the globe...

62227, Little Brother Marketing Strategy Posted by ihatemasfonos, Tue May-30-06 09:12 PM
OK, if I'm an A&R at Atlantic, it's tough to market you guys. You're on a major, but you're tough to pin down. You were very successful on the indie circuit, but in terms of major label sales, you guys were lacking a bit.
The good thing is you have a solid fanbase. People on sites like OKP, HHS, and AHH know who you are, and a lot of them dig your music. I feel like Atlantic went the online route with your material, and that was the wrong way to go. The internet dudes know Little Brother. No, you guys need exposure to a new audience. What y'all have is soul. I think you guys need to market that. Not everyone can relate to "Neo-Native Tongues" or "throwback hip hop." People aren't gonna care about that, but everyone relates to soul. I say that would be your key "gimmick." It's what'll get you noticed.
I say you show that soul by putting out a ladies jam as a first single. Something like "Whatever You Say" could get a ton of love if people heard it. I know that. There are girls who would love that. Just the pure charisma on that track is great. Next, you drop a joint like the one you did with Supa on SBE. That shit was HARD. But it was still y'all being yourselves. That's something that'd get people's attention if the ladies jam didn't catch em. Then, you hit em with a joint like "All for You." That shit is so touching. You'd endear yourself to your fans. So, in sum, you draw em in with a light hearted ladies jam, show some serious skills (here's where you could insert a collabo with someone like TI), and then drop the introspective joint.
I'm convinced that if LB can get the listener's attention, they'll love y'all. Cos not everyone relates to club bangers. Y'all just need to find a way to draw people in with your realness. You guys do the everyman thing so well, and I think that's your greatest strength, but alos your greatest weakness. There needs to be a flash in the pan joint that draws attention to y'all. Once you hook em, they'll like what they hear from then on.
I also think 9th should keep getting a hand in on some major artists albums. If people see 9th's working with TI or Weezy, they might see you guys with a video on or hear you on the radio and be like "oh, yo that's 9th's group... let's see if they're any good."
Needless to say, this will all take some money. If I were an A&R, I would push y'all to get on Spankin New Music Week or some shit on MTV. Just some face time. The video for Lovin It was too bland. It was clever, but do something that stands out. Something like Slum Village's "Tainted." Not just y'all rappin in the club or on the street or whatever. Get a concept video to catch people's eye.
I think y'all should also use the state of NC. David Banner got some shine because of the whole "I AM MISSISSIPPI" thing, and Nappy Roots with the "down home from Kentucky" thing. Y'all are the only cats besides Petey coming out of Tar Heel land. That adds a bit of mystique I think.
I feel like hip hop is shifting a bit with Lupe getting some shine and Kanye being... huge. I think if y'all were to kinda get with that movement, y'all could be successful. NEVER jump ship to the gangsta shit or be gettin crunk. That's not you, and it's not worth it to sell your soul for your artistic integrity. Keep it real. Just tweak a few things to get noticed.
I know I'm simplifying this shit, but I'm not too much of an expert in the ins and outs of the industry. Just a few suggestions. Thanks for giving me the oppurtunity to bounce a few ideas out there Phonte. Y'all are one of my favorite groups, and I wish y'all nothing but the best.

62232, Don't make any drastic changes in the music Posted by DJR, Tue May-30-06 11:42 PM
I feel like most of the people that hear Little Brother's music like it. It's accessible enough and easy enough to get into and relate to.
The problem is getting more people to hear it and getting the LB name out there. IMO, getting a known guest artist or two on the next album would help. LB worked with Bun B, Mos Def, and Big Daddy Kane on the mixtapes, but there hasn't been a collab with a well known artist on the 2 albums. I'm not saying I want a guest filled album because I personally would rather hear what you and Pooh have to say, but a few guests would be cool. I think there may be a bit of a stigma with groups that are mainly big on the internet. Collabing with a few artists that are well known in real life(no offense meant, just don't know how to word it) might make LB more legit in the eyes of certain music fans.
Also, jumping on remixes/other artists shit could help. I'm sure LB has some contacts since 9th worked with DC, Mary, and Jay, you got the Roots co-sign, Mos Def, Bun B, TI, etc.

62233, Y'all needed a BANGER on that album Posted by DJPrimetime, Wed May-31-06 06:50 AM
Alot of the joints were good, but nothing screamed banger on that album and that's after repeated listens. I didn't hear anything that would make me stop and say "oh shit" and get real hype. Played in for my 8th graders last week and they said the same thing. The beats need more energy (not all of them) but some definetly do to really grab the listeners attention.

You cats have gotten better with each release, in my own personal opinion. I think that the independent route would benefit y'all more seeing as how Atlantic dropped the fucking ball on a great album. Like you said on Boondock Saints, as of the recording you hadn't outsold "The Listening". The only thing I'd like to see is more Khrysis production... he's definitely bringing the fucking heat.
That and feature some of The Lessondary on your next album (points at Tanya Morgan and myself). ha! ha!

I been listen to LB since day 1 (&have been to a ton of shows in NC) and on the new album there was something a little bit diffrent.
To me on parts of the record it almost seemed as if Tay was almost freestylin at some points, or if not that pullin a Jay and writin it on the spot while the listening/Chittlin Circuit seemed more tight/thought out lyrically.
Pooh seems better when hes not trying to be so gangster on MS (even though the Drama MixTape cancels this opinion out).
& 9th should pull a Kanye and save ALL the good beats for himself.
|
62238, RE: Little Brother Posted by pookjenkins, Thu Jun-01-06 12:38 AM
Why did chitlin circuit 1.5 soundso much better than the album? Take taht energy and make it work into a cohesive project with tangible songs. Replace Do it again with Ain't nobody like me and some more joints that make the album come across to the vaerage listener and we're in business.

He needs to do a video for that song. I don't think he got enough off "go hed" (shawty got an ass on here) so if he not trying to push trap house anymore.
I would do a type of split video with a remix with shawty got a ass on here get shawanna (she sorta hot right now) or trina (she got a ass).
Have "go hed" remix be the main single then have shook them hatars for the niggaz sorta like bring it on and u don't know me.
I wouldnn't even worried about go hed being old casue I think outside the south most folk ain't herd the song. still tipping was about 2 yearsa old and it blew up so I think he could do it.

Take advantage of the universal respect they get from underground artists and put out a comp that mixes the orchestral, house and beathead shit they do.
An album with tracks with Jill Scott, Common, Black Thought, Lil' Brother, etc, etc could probably get some attention.
Also, release a fully thought out bootleg remix joint. Like marc mac's boots that are floating around are cool, but if he/they took the time to really work on some american hiphop r&b remixes, they could get some burn.
Also, get at Kaidi Tatham and Cassandra Wilson, Lizz Wright, Cleveland Watkiss, Nathan Haines, Eska, and alla them and put out a jazz album of updated standards. They damn sure got the connections it seems.

62252, Marc and Dego Posted by jackie chiles, Tue May-30-06 09:56 AM
are making shit that is waaaay too "pretty", too cerebral and too out there, for the average urban music consumer to get into.
All them strings, chord changes and beats faster than 95 bpm are just too much for the average person weaned on hip-hop to appreciate.
So really they should be focused on cultivating a new generation of jazz/dance music heads.
4Hero has been at the forefront of a musical movment and that's their hook - the whole "2000 Black" thing is an accessible concept that they should be leveraging into a strong identity.
How?
By taking it on the road.
I'm not talking DJ gigs, I'm talking the full Dollis Hill orchestral complement, strings and all.
Now, I understand that this is prohibitively expensive, so an alternative might be to get some label support to do one or two American music festivals and filling in the gaps with a live album.
I'm not entirely sure, but I'd be willing to bet money that there is a live recording somewhere, probably Japan.
Package that mug and sell it. Better yet, do a DVD.
Even better, include some documentary material on the 4Hero creative process and on the whole nu-jazz, broken scene in particular.
This will play big with the NPR crowd.
In closing I'll summarize
- forget about the urban market
- play live in as many countries as possible. The US will "get it" once exposed to the musicianship that goes into 4Hero's music
- Document your creative process and live shows and market it to the left, jazz loving urban sophisticate crowd.
- Satellite radio is your friend. You need to be over in America doing XM and Sirius at least once a year.
- You've got a trillion brands in the West London movement. DKD, Neon Phusion, Silhouette Brown etc. Don't let them die off. Tour and support these projects, even if you have to take L's the first goes around.
You may not do Jeezy numbers but there is definitely dough to be made by marketing to a different audience.

they do okay with the gilles peterson/straight no chaser crowd though. whether theyre happy with that or not, i dont know, but the whole broken beat scene is their field now, and thats mainly older 30 something guys who grew up with soul/jazz/funk, which is fitting really, cos i read a recent interview with marc talking about how the new dirty hip hop album on bbe was to school youngsters where the samples in rap came from, and i dont know if he realised those youngsters listening to nas and the pharcyde et al grew up quite a while ago. id like 4hero to embrace their futuristic side again (not the rotary connection/EWF-updating one), but since it doesnt look like thats happening, they might as well try and tap into either the neo soul-type market more or the dance one that guys like herbert and co are part of

62261, One of the few artists whose career... Posted by scorpion, Tue May-30-06 08:24 AM
is going exactly they way they planned it...
No mis-steps in her career....
Sure, I think Lover's Rock was a smidge below her standard of excellence but it was still quality and sold like hotcakes...
The lesson to learn from Sade is how to work mystique...No one has done it like she does it....
She only come around when she wants to...
but even MORE important in the sucess of Sade is the fact that she makes HER music regardless...
when she makes records, you know you will get a SADE joint....there wont be any hot producers or Jay-Z verses....it will still have the same flavor as Diamond Life save for minor updates....

62276, Take Eric Roberson's lead Posted by soulive, Tue May-30-06 09:03 AM
and give the more accessible tracks to other artists and release his shit independently. All of his singles, with the exception of Weekend Love, give the slightest indication of how sick he really is. If he's waiting for Mr. White Tee to push his product the way it should, he's mistaken.
|

Fuck it. I'ma be selfish for a minute.
Dwele need to explore more sounds I think. He at the risk of becoming cliche- and he aint big enough for that yet.
If he lose the OKP type crowd hype, I dunno if he got enough mainstream momentum to keep his shit going.

62278, Well Posted by soulive, Tue May-30-06 09:27 AM
Dwele is the kind of artist who will never blow up, especially if he continues making the type of music that he makes. Its labor of love music and not music made for commerce. Understand, there's nothing wrong with it and not everyone is meant to be a "superstar." As far as Erro is concerned, he's at a benefit in that he's a strong lyricist who happens to equally be as dope a vocalist and performer. Therefore, he can produce a surplus of material for other acts.
Dwele makes dope ass grooves with his lyrics, to a degree, being an afterthought. He's found his niche in the groove-based lounge sound but that's not something you can easily delegate to another artist without them sounding like you. Can he push further? Sure but I think too much too soon can alienate not only the following he has now but come off as contrived to a potential audience. He doesn't have the vocal skill to pull of Erro's material and his stage presence (seen with my own two)needs some work too. I just think both of those cats have so much potential and Dwele, much like MeShell N'Degeocello, would torture all types of scratched surfaces if he didn't have a major over him.
|
62279, I think the mainstream WANTS some Dwele tho- but he gonna have to Posted by FireBrand, Tue May-30-06 09:35 AM
diversifiy that sound. As much as it's his signature, that shit can also be a death warrant.
I aint gonna front. Much as I like that nigga, I got tired of listening on the second (third) album. I mean it FELT like I heard it all before.

62280, The reason it felt like you heard it before... Posted by soulive, Tue May-30-06 09:40 AM
is because you have. LOL.
Production-wise, he's strong enough to NOT need outside producers but he's someone who can benefit from a writer to articulate his concepts. He sometimes starts off strong and then meanders and goes nowhere. His lyrics can be insipid and are too heavy on maintaining his street cred. I was surprised when I first heard Truth because the lyrics were concise and flowed whereas he just seems to sit at a Rhodes and go straight off the dome.
Muhfucka still dope tho'...LMAO
|
62281, He needs a co-producer.... Posted by scorpion, Tue May-30-06 09:33 AM
He needs James Poyser and Eric Roberson, stat.....
His lyrics and concepts are not strong....
He's unfocused, he tends to ramble....
He tries too hard to appeal to the streets and the ladies--and that makes for cringe-worthy moments...
He doesnt need Poyser to write music for him, but guide him and "trim the fat" like Quincy did with Michael....
a team of Dwele, Poyser, and Roberson would crack out a fine album...
his voice is capable, but a vocal coach would help him over the rough spots....
He's got enough buzz and talent but he just needs the product to go with it....
He does NOT need outside prduction, tho....that shit only dilutes his sounds and hurts him overall....

Not this wishy-washy production he's been working with on his two studio albums. There's a reason the only songs of his that ever get burn are "Rize" and white labels with official production (Kanye, Dilla). He needs to come with some more rugged shit to off-set all the other loverboy stuff he wants to do. He's suited to do it too.

I seen another group do a similar thing; Collective Efforts. They were just emcees from different groups and a dj from another group. When they got together the first jawn showed alot of promise. Them EP singles did too. 3 albums later- I'd venture to say that Medicine is that fiya.

62301, NO MORE NIGEL GODRICH Posted by _Spread_, Tue May-30-06 09:46 AM
He's a great producer but he has such a distinct "sound"...like dude had Beck sounding like Thom Yorke and shit.
They need a new producer and a newe sound...Kid A was dope, Amnesiac still dope, but by the time Hail to the Theif rolled around I was ready for a new sound from them like they always had managed to do, but it was just a potpourri of what they had been doing...the structure of starting out slow and building into this dramatic climax and then ending or going back to quiet is getting real old to me...
I'd like to see them flex their musicality a little more...the can rock, they got the electronic shit going on, I think they should do some more groove-oriented songs...like back to The Bends days where they just played straight up songs...I don't want it to sound like The Bends, I just want some straight up songs though...They've gotten a little pretentious to me...they realized their power but took it too far by TRYING to make this profound music...Profound music will be made automatically without trying if you are true to yourself...
I think Radiohead could use a lot of guidance...or perhaps none at all...whatever they HAVEN"T been doing for the past 3 albums...maybe they should try that.

>He's a great producer but he has such a distinct >"sound"...like dude had Beck sounding like Thom Yorke and >shit.
then it's probably more like he had Thom Yorke sounding like Nigel Godrich.
Radiohead is like a bestselling author at this point, though -- they are so successful and critically acclaimed that nobody is willing to step in and be their editor, so their books get longer and longer and more self-indulgent.

Marketing a male teen R&B star surely cannot be difficult. I don't know how much exposure dude got in the US, but he was barely seen on tv over here. The 1st thing I would have done is get him on BET, MTV, CD:UK, and all of them music oriented show's with a teen audience. Nothing wrong with the 1st single, but the next time we saw him was with Twista again. Bad look IMO - nobody want's to be labelled a rapper's singing sidekick.
I would've made the second single 'All the If's' and then come back again with a club song in the mould of 'Run It' and thrown 'Cheat on you' out to radio to generate some spins cos the chicks love that song. I never heard it on the radio once.
Again, I think the main thing is exposure. Chris Brown had showcases, live shows over here before his first single dropped. I don't know how much exposure Trey got over in the States, but we didn't seem him on tv apart from his video.

|
62313, he needs to channel the energy he had when released from Clinton Posted by Quez, Tue May-30-06 11:03 AM
and release an album as if he just hit the ground again. Even tho Rell is good at some clubby shit, I believe they'll drop the ball by releasing anything but grimey shit from him. The Roc tried to commercialize Freeway and Beans and it hurt both thier careers long-term.
Juelz and Cam can take him back on 106&Park and introduce him as the return of the NY streets or something along those lings.

I agree...Love me some Badu...i think she needs to do an album that captures her deep vocal talents..The first thing she needs to do is work on a straight-ahead album; I'm talking some two fisted funk-rock shit...then follow it up with a Jazz album for Blue Note on something...To me her voice has been underutilized in terms of of her jazz chops....finally i would like to see a straight album of covers....A little Billie Holiday; a little Areatha, a little Pretenders (Brass In Pocket...I can hear her on that one...); a little Joni Mithcell; a little Nina Simone; hell even a little Burt Bacharach...throw a curve pitch...

I'd have her do an album of jazz-inflected material, like a live recording made with a jazz band. Mostly downtempo torch song type stuff. Sure, it would piss her fans off, BUT it might put that voice of hers to good use for a change. The only rule would be none of that high pitched screeching shit. (I HATE that...)

i would get them to come out and do another album in the vein of thats a plenty. i know some critics thought it was a total mess, a pastiche, and too corny/sugary, but i love old showtunes, broadway and blues songs (they even do a son house cover!), and i think they did a good job. anyway, most people think of the PS as doing songs like jump in the 80s, and this has got to be one of the most strange albums ive heard from a 70s female group, and one of the best, so it would be cool to get a new album from them that showed their range. if candi staton can come back, so can the pointer sisters

HE needs to do the bun b postion jump on some tracks with these younger dudes coming up in mami teach them the game. Then when the album come out they'll return the flavor and he'll get alot of pub. It is hard to be bun tho by all accounts bun is a down to earth cat who is very humble and not quick to jump into ignorance. and by most accounts Trick daddy is a quick temper ready to jump into ignorance.
def going back to some of that ignorant ass trick in his music. I like consicnous "luv the kids" trick 2 and folks needed to see that. IT was both sided conflicting personality of that that made him what he is.

I really like that colored section. I'ma say this, I've always said from jump that southern niggas need to say fuck the traditional soul sound- fuck jazz, fuck house. Cus no matter how good of an artist you are, unless you got someone COSIGNING you, folk just gonna label you a biter.
They might actually RESPECT you cus u doing what they like, but they aint buying the shit, and u aint gonna generate no press. (See: ATL's: Jiva, Seek, Algebra, Laurenea, etc, etc, etc).
Do what is natural. The gospeleque, bluesy shit he had on that album is what caught my wife's and my brother's attention. To ME? that's the tell tale.
Niggas gonna say u sound like stevie, legend, whatever...
BUT if u stick to what is DISCTINCTLY southern, you gonna have to at least get your respect that you deserve as an artist.
This brother does ONE HELL of a show- and he takes you to his roots- that Jewish/Afrikan gospel thing he be talking about.
That's what his ENTIRE sound should be all about. It will speak to the people on a CD the way it does in the audeince at his shows.

They need to fuck with more obscure singers- folk up and coming. Fuck with a Jack Davey, a Joi, Julie Dexter a Janelle Monae...
And it's this chic on a rich medina jawn- I can't think of her name- but HER too.
Folk might not realize it when they listening, but they gonna give the band more credit even tho 'em singers got real presence n shit- just becaue they don't recognize 'em names str8 off the bat- cept maybe joi.

If you never heard that album (I think you did though; I remember when we all taked about it when it dropped), then give it a listen. You can tell that Eric Stamile and Jay Denes had NO business working together. They're both GREAT producers (Eric's work on Gaelle's "Transient" album is stellar, and you already know about Jay Denes aka Blue Six), but together? notsomuch...
It's almost like it was a musical shotgun wedding. Astralwerks needed some "hot" producers to make Lisa's album (which was already at LEAST 2 0r 3 years behind schedule), and they threw those two cats in the lab together.

|
62426, Heres what she should do (LINK)...song quality & production baby... Posted by Voodoochilde, Fri Jun-02-06 06:57 PM
Yeah I'm with Scorpion on this too...
Chaka just needs to get some folks together who understand and respect song quality...and understand production....get with some of her old crew (like the cats Scorp mentioned) and pull some great songs together and use that magical voice of hers...
actually ... you know what ... she doesn't HAVE to go back to the old cats if they are hard to track down. She can RE-hook up with that 'new' producer Meshell...after all they recorded an entire record together in the 90's that was never released by WB (only a few tracks have been officially released and they were BOTH GEMS...the tracks from this Chaka/Meshell session were...
"Never Miss The Water" (when this came out as a lead single for Chaka's Greatest hits comp this was the first Chaka song that i heard in YEARS that sounded like 'old' Chaka reborne and revitalized...it sounded breezy and classic yet modern and in step with the now at the same time)
"Pain" This was on the soundtrack to living single. Its another modern song that captures the essence of Chaka's classic magic, yet still sounds current and vibrant and kicks the ASS of most of the crappy mess thats passed off as R&B these days...in fact...
HERES A LINK dammit...hear for yourself...
http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=9BE57E944C8B8556
So yeah, whether its getting with some old cats who 'understand', or some new cats (like Meshell) who 'understand'...she needs to get with SOMEONE who understands the importance and POWER that songcraft, arrangement, production can have on the end result. Chaka's voice is an instrument with its own unique sound and inflection...and if its burried beneath too much production, or forced to try to express itself in a tootightsong that has no 'space' for it to express and no room for a melody to be explored...then, as magical and mighty as her voice is it will not be able to shine like it ought to. So get with someone who understands THAT and respects THAT...and she (and we) will be on top of the world again....

62456, Either completely change your production techique or... Posted by mrhood75, Tue May-30-06 10:36 AM
...go cmpletely back to your '92, '93 era production style. 'Cause right now, Pete Rock sounds liek someone else trying to sound like Pete Rock. And the results have been thin and watered down.
Also, find another MC to get behind and mentor in the game. The ship with CL has sailed already. I don't think anyone would really be pleased with the results of a new Pete/CL album at this point. Either find a young, hungry cat, or someone fairly established on the underground level (I'm thinking one of the dudes in The U.N.), link up with him/her, and record an album together.
|
62457, play the nostalgia card, but collab with new artists Posted by danthrax, Tue May-30-06 12:11 PM
LOTS of MCs today still have respect for Pete Rock even if they've moved on. You could put together a compilation style album with people doing classic NY style hiphop who haven't done it for a while -- Nas, Jay... damn, as much as I hate him, why not 50? It's kind of like working with Stanley Kubrick -- even if he's stunk it up, you wanna do a Kubrick movie because you want to be associated with that genius. Except Pete Rock ain't dead yet.
If and when that takes off, do another album that updates the style. This is probably blasphemous to a lot of folks, but Pete Rock could learn a lot from a Kanye West or a Just Blaze. He shouldn't be ashamed to play catchup -- but only after he's done the solid 'nostalgia' album.

His style is too diverse to be boxing himself in the category of "the producer with a beat on every supposed hit album coming out". And like someone else said before, his beats sound a little bit hallow now a days...I dunno what it is but he needs to add a element or two more to his beats and get that full range of sould he had on the original Soul Survivor.

62462, 1. Stop it with the "G-Unot" disses Posted by mrhood75, Tue May-30-06 09:27 AM
It's not helping with his career. Anytime you're relying on dissing another artist to sell your records, very little good comes from it. Yeah, controversey sells, but you need to stand on your own as an artist.
2. Find a way to work with Dr. Dre. If the tales are true, he actually believes in Game's potential as an artist. You need someone like that in your corner.
3. Failing that, get some good chemistry with one producer, rather than having your album handled by like ten of them. If it can't be Dre, I'm thinking someone like Erick Sermon or Hi-Tek or something.

If they come out the gate with another lengthy, abstract, overly pretentious record like Frances the Mute, they are gonna be written off as predictable- and I think that their initial critical success was that they sort of came outta left field and surprised cats familiar with ATDI.
Third LP, they need to make shit concise and more accessible- but still keep that bizarre flavor/tendencies that they have as their calling card.

He said it was about 40% done, and I read an interview about him being his hip-hop jazz album... As in you have to sit down and listen to it..al la Headphone music..
But Kick push was the best beat on there BY FAR..they other beats just didnât grab me and alto of people that I know heard the album..espcialy with a flow as crazy as his, he can rock over better beats..he's shown that on his mixtapes.. I donât know if he putting his boys on, up and comers on or what..
and better hooks..
Cuz the thing about Lupe is his verses are complex, but you gona have to have something for the casual listener to get into, to not be 'underground' or whatever..Adn I donât give a fuck what anybody sounds like or comes from, if you on a Major Record Label, you are not underground..them dudes want you to put up at least some type of numbers..
But I hope he changed that, I think he has the chance to be this era's Nas to Weezy's Jay-Z

Unless you a studio rat or a enginier or jsut realy into music production like that who gonna just automaticly catch shit like that? IT might take a minuite and by that time Lupe done said 3 other lines like that..
And thats just an example, he has alot of lines like that..slick as fuck..but will go over your head the first listen..if you not sitting down, zonenin out, and paying attention..just like I said... Headphone Music..
Which aint nothign WRONG wiht that per-say..but eather you gonna say "fuck it" and ride with it, or realize that you my be alienating some people when you bring it like that..
Also how old is you little brother? cuz if he is 8-9-10-11 then more kudos to him, but if your little bra is 16-17-18 then shit...he's right at that age wher he''s hanging on every word a rapper says..I knwo I was like that..I was 15 when Wu Forever came out and could expain every single metaphor that came out of GZA's mouth...I was jsut a fan of the game like that..I aint had shit eles to do at 15 but play ball, fuck with little hoodrats and decipher Wu-Tang lyrics (the good old days)

62496, RE: Lupe Fiasco Posted by speaksfromtheheart, Wed Aug-02-06 03:16 PM
I don't know how many albums he signed with atlantic to do for his label i.e. himself as well but do your albums and get off. Go independent!! with FNF. Put out the joint Daydreams with Jill Scott as a single, do a video then put out I gotcha with Pharrell. After that find a favorite single from a fans perspective and put that out. I can see lupe fiasco being oversaturated, he should ride Food & Liquior out for like two years. Just tour with groups, headline his own tour. Also time to focus on his label. In the meantime put out another mixtape. The key with Lupe is staying consistant and not being oversaturated and people getting tired of hearing him. Lupe has a chance to be a great MC and to be legendary but he has to give himself that chance. Like I said at least two years between this album and the next, possibly three. Between his album and the mixtapes he has enough material to ride it out. A mixtape or two in between will help with the buzz. He has to maintain that buzz and people wanting and anticipating hearing him each time he drops.

1. Black Thought needs to develop a public presence....YESTERDAY....until he does this the group will continue to struggle....
2. All the studio wizadry must stop....get in the studio and jam...write joints based around that....play the final version live in the studio, record it....
Ppl ask why arent the records as good as the concerts?
Simple answer: The Roots dont play together live in the studio.....they havent since DYWM....
3. Stop being tolerant of fuck-ups in the orginazation....Fire some niggas....
I dont read Ahmir's blogs often because they frustrate the shit out of me....somebody in their circle is CONSTANTLY fucking up something somewhere--from the minute to the crucial....
4. TFA was as raw as it was because The Roots career was on the line...Maybe they need to be threatened with being dropped with every album....
5. Stop being afraid--fuck radio, MTV, and whoever else....make the best Roots record possible....Stop trying to "blow up"...We'll see if Ahmir's hero finally saying this to him will bring the proper result....

62504, The roots are a paradox: Posted by kayru99, Tue May-30-06 09:55 AM
they're a band who's known for great expansive live shows, but their albums are kinda same-y.
I'd say, try and be a lil more open on the albums. The problem with tryin to dumb down when you real smart is you usually gonna guess wrong and miss horribly.

62505, you have three approaches Posted by danthrax, Tue May-30-06 12:24 PM
1) Keep on putting out albums that cater to your loyal fanbase, but accept the fact that you are not going to be relevent to where hiphop is going.
2) Create a boom-bap meets soul album. Yep, I know Kanye's hot right now, and it might seem like pandering. But if there's someone who can pull it off, it's the Roots. If hiphop has been jazzy and funky, now it's time to be soulful. Sped up samples are not a requirement, but melody and orchestration are a must. Leverage that organic thing.
3) Fuck the organic thing -- give us live crunk. I'm NOT joking. Buy the best drum pads possible. Buy some of the nastiest craziest effect pedals possible and put em on your guitar and bass. Fuck the Triton and bring the MicroKorg. You don't have to do it stupid, neither. You can make intelligent anthems that make people wanna tear shit apart. And you can still include some classic roots stuff in other parts of the album.
Finally, Black Thought out to distinguish himself as an individual. Groups need frontmen. I personally love a group concept, but the audience at wide does not. Even the most credible and cohesive groups of all time leveraged their frontman. Black Thought out to get more personal on the rhymes -- who IS Black Thought, besides just a dope lyracist?
|
62506, RE: The Roots Posted by blue23, Tue May-30-06 02:04 PM
1) Go back to surrounding Black Thought with a support system. He doesn't have the personality to carry an album for dolo.
2) Stop releasing the worst song on your album as the single!!!
3) Go back to calling in favors. Was anyone actually complaining when Common, D', Erykah, Mos, Tip, etc. were guest spotting? I know I wasn't.
4) Stop worrying about Mtv.
5) Stop overthinking success. When the Roots are who they are they shine. When they try to be Outkast or the Black Eyed Peas they alienate their base and never gain ground anyway. Leave it alone. The first 3 records were considered classics b/c nobody else was doing what they could do. When they started copying everybody else shit got lame quick.
BTW

i guess, just embrace the rapper image more and become celebs dis mufuckas more yeah, it's gimmicky, but they from phillie act like it! do some grimey shit have malik b be "that element" that gives them street cred

62509, Black Thought is a monster, BUT... Posted by el guante, Thu Jun-01-06 12:53 AM
...i always wished he'd SAY SOMETHING MORE.
and i don't mean some platitude-filled "political song" or nothing like that. i mean really get down and write a memorable, emotional, non-flexy song about something.
"water" was like that, and i think it's still one of their most powerful songs.
he's such a great technical emcee, but those "we're so legendary" songs get old after a while. i'd like to hear more storytelling. like someone said about little brother, think about how you want to be remembered. i wouldn't want to go down in history as the guy who fronted hip hop's token live band; i'd rather be the guy who wrote a classic song or two, or hell-- a classic album-- with hip hop's token live band. and that takes topics, thought-provoking lyrics, thinking outside-the-box.
this isn't so much an A&R request as an artistic one i guess.
as an A&R, i think one route would be to do more "Jay-Z unplugged" projects just to get out there in people's heads more. maybe with TI, or Kanye, or Outkast. something like that... it's a difficult question.

62510, they need to do a Heavy Rhyme Expeience Posted by JtothaI, Wed Jul-26-06 10:17 AM
type of album. Build their profile up some. Feature some Def Jam artists that are known to move some units that might possibly get you on mainstream radio or mix shows just because of their name alone.
Throw a couple R&B joints on there and combined with the MC's they feature they might actually garner some notice outside of Rolling Stone and Blender.
No ones gonna scream sell-out (I wouldn't) because it wouldn't be that far off from what they do at all their live shows with guests etc.

its been long enough. According to her, she's not privy to the concessions of a major label artist. Her music and her rebellious spirit scream independence so I just say don't re-up with Maverick. Her following may not be substantial but its enough to at least maintain where she is. The folks who are into her are *INTO* her are and are willing to support her.
Her talent is far too great to be mired with 3-5 year absences over logistics.

well...she 'kinda' did. She's no longer with Maverick. She and her manager at the time shopped her last record around themselves (the grammy nominated mostly instrumental jazz record 'Spirit Music Jamia Dance of The Infidel') and it ended up being released by two labels 'Universal France' and 'Shanachie Records'. I THINK she's officially signed with Universal France now, and i THINK they are the ones who will be releasing her next album (a vocal record due out in fall i think) but i'm not 100% sure. Last i heard she was now managing herself.
so in some sense she is already kinda leaning towards that indie road...
And you are right, she as a small but extremely loyal fanbase (myself included) who will support anything she explores.
I can think of a few venues, shows, festivals i might like her to play live at to perhaps help gain more 'mass' visability into what she does...but as for changing what she does...nope, definitely not.
Well maybe i'd encourage her to continue recording even more of her records live with a band...because she's really on a level all her own in that realm. Actually she's done this already...most (if not all) of her last record, and several tunes on previous records were recorded that way...live in studio with her bands...with AMAZING results (see Jabril, Criterion etc). Hell she could just put out live albums as far as i'm concerned :)
Yeah, she's another artist who i wouldn't change a thing about what they do.

62524, Step I. Posted by jackie chiles, Tue May-30-06 10:40 AM
start planning his esacpe from Jive. This is the most important thing he can do with his career. Almost any OTHER major would be better than Jive, he's just lost in the sauce over there.
(Can LEFT JAM hurry the fuck up and get off the ground?)
Being on a major, he has options most underground cats don't have, so I would suggest a two-tiered approach.
He needs to hit the underground and the mainstream simultaneously.
2. Put together a solid band with a good horn section and solid percussion. He's from DC so this is a no-brainer. Just grab some young, hungry cats from the Go-go world.
3. Since he's still stuck with Jive, he may as well use that relationship to a much benefit as possible, touring as much as possible with his band. Doing as many musical festivals and liquor & tobacco sponsored concert series as possible. He shouldn't forget about the incense circuit either (SOBs, Temple Bar, Electric Factory, Black Cat, etc.)
Meanwhile, he should be working to capitalize on a tried and tested method of selling records in the urban market these days - Get your whole home town or region behind you. Start a "movement". Sell a boatload of CDs.
This means, more "Street Experience" mixtapes, more working with local producers and more local performances.
If he can create some momentum, that might carry him to another major label deal, hopefully this time with some support and a release date in less that the 2 years after completion it took Jive to release his joint . ________________________________________________ Muhsinah - The Oscillations RH Factor- Distractions Backwudz - Wood Work

Von Pea & the fellas need to get out & tour. Come to DC, get everywhere & get the music out there. If they could get a guest spot from some big name cats (Phonte possibly) on a remix to "We Be" or they next single. Might also wanna hit up Khrysis & 9th for some production. I like the Beatmaker's production, but adding some extra sounds to the arsenal would be beneficial. Other than that, they've taken good steps with Loud Minority. Plus, they put music out there for free which got me hip to them.

62531, actualy release something Posted by Iltigo, Tue May-30-06 10:31 AM
1. start releasing stories on mtv and other places about redman and his influence on zny, gonzo hardcore writing (eminem, et al).
2. bring back al those old mtv specials with him in it from how high publicity.
3. start another show with him as the focus. kind of like ashely parker angle shit but with a hip-hop legend coming back.
4. push the "legend" brand. in hip-hop, if enough peopel say it it must be true (jay is the goat, biggie is the goat, jay lost, etc.)
5. "leak" some gilahouse stuff to the masses, via mtv.leak and see how everybody looooves "fuck the security!"
6. put him with meth at every turn, but don't let meth outshine him. let reggie be regie.
7. also p[lay up his muscial ability. the man plays keys, drums, sings and is a pretty good dj. he also did most of the production on his early albums. play up the "do it yourself" angle.

If people want to talk with me, or want to give me an A&R position for a label, let me know.
It's worse when you do give ideas, a label says "no, we are not interested" and they take your exact idea and use it. Fuck that, and have that other person retire with a $50,000,000 bonus?
No. No longer.

62536, Not for my own music Posted by johnbook, Tue May-30-06 07:03 PM
For me, I have two things I try to do. I want to do work as an artist/producer, and I also want to continue my work as a journalist.
With the contacts I've gained over the years, I would often give suggestions to people at labels, as nothing more than suggestions. I think back then I was naive to how the business was run, but I would say things and always be told "no, that would never work" or "the target audience for that is very small compared to the bigger acts we deal with." For me, it always felt like a metaphorical "pat on the back", but a few months later, I would see some of my ideas executed.
Do I want credit? Sometimes yes, sometimes no, but it would be nice to be able to present ideas in an "official" manner so that it would make an impression to those record label executives. Yet I also understand that if an A&R or production supervisor is in a lull, and somehow a "random" idea is presented, they are going to turn around and say "hey Mr. Man, I think we should do this."
There are times when I could get bitter, but I have had to take a step back and figure out the next plan. In other words, execute that plan but make sure that no one stabs you in the back. You have to play your cards right. That's the crappy part, because a part of that has to deal with being "ruthless". You may not be that way personally, but when you are "the artist" or the "talent scout", you do what it takes to make an impression so that every transaction is not only good for you, but for everyone involved.

Also increase her internet presence. I mean the majority of people who know who she is are people who frequent the net and have downloaded her old joints. So hit myspace hard w/ joints...maintain a well put togethor site maybe even come on to OKP. reaquaint w/ the ones who are familiar.

...only without the whole gambling problem/forced-sabbatical issue. One of the cleverest, most talented MCs in the modern era and yet it is like he suddenly got bored with being an ill MC and felt the need to drop his flow and start doing all this fuzz-rock angst-metal garbage.
How about: - stop taking yourself so seriously - stop trying to channel Fishbone - get back to being/doing hip-hop instead of trying so hard to focus on this art/noise-rock esoteric bullshit - SPIT (like you used to from back with the Bush Babees onward)
Saw him and Kwe live a couple months back in Boston and he was REALLY pushing the envelope on being totally WACK - self-absorbed, way too many way too long "La-dee-don-deeeehhhhhhhhhhh"s. IMO, Mos's essence was captured perfectly in the Chappelle's Show ep when he rocked Close Edge in shotgun of Dave's whip on the fish-eye lens. He murdered that. And he was the first real sing-songy MC to actually do it as well and as melodically as he did. Now, it's like he just doesn't care to simply KILL IT like he could every time he touches the mic. Perfect example of an uber-talented artist starting to outthink himself and get bored with his own effectiveness.

Start touring with the roots, Talib, Jean Grae. Do a song with Fertile Ground, lupe, whomever. Just get more exposure. Take a break from acting and get back to rapping. He doesn't have to do anything else. Just focus on rapping and becoming more of a visible name and be consistant.

62595, Pete Rock will NOT HELP LB Posted by Fisticuffs, Wed May-31-06 09:31 AM
As an AR you gotta SELL a group to the people. LB is on a major and are no longer "our" group. They need to be out there going gold or better. I feel the advice thrown Tay's way is wrong. Yall want them to not change for who's sake? Not theirs. If they remain the same they'll be dropped, broke, and FORCED to sell out. We can't suppress them.
A Pete or Primo beat is NOT helping LB. The only niggas excited about that are here posting. The music has to go beyond the internet. LB has to grow beyond us.
We all complain about the rappers selling now but they exist because the LB's don't sell. We need LB, Kweli,Mos,Slum,Lupe, etc going platinum to change the industry.
To do this they have to make good SONGS. The Minstrel Show was "dope beats, dope rhymes" but yes the public wants more. That album was a Tay 16, chorus, Pooh 16 etc. You gotta do more then pick a beat, say "I spit 1st, then you go." Bring more concepts and themes that you can deliver to the mainstream while maintaining integrity. Common had a hit w/"The Light" which was a song "for the bitches" but it was still 100% Common. Kweli had it right w/"Get By." He delivered a message and had a solid concept and maintained 100% integrity. Now "Waiting For the DJ" was a reach.
Get away from the battle raps. Make songs like "All 4 You" and push them as singles. "Lovin It" was cool but had no impact as a song. It was too basic. Go a little left. Shit "Kick, Push" is buzzing. Gnarls' "Crazy" is a hit.
Go away from 9th's boom bap and get his more musical, melody driven shit. Yall should've spit over the "Girl" beat. Imagine the same beat, the same chorus, but have you and Pooh spitting instead of Yonce and them singing. You guys are a group and have to grow together. 9th as a producer, you and Pooh as song writers.
Go w/that Foreign Exchange vibe of "Sincere" or "Come Around." Some shit the ladies AND the fellas can feel. If you don't get the females you'll never sell. Your singles should be bait. Once you lure the people in to cop the album sneak your Pete Rock or your lyrical joint in.
Your goal has to be gold or platinum. I felt you guys had no strategy to take LB to a wider audience. The Listening was more accessible IMO. Don't wait on marketing or the label. A hit record will do more for you in getting your name out then posters or mixtapes. Ir's on LB to blow not Atlantic. I see Lupe everywhere and it's due to HIS GRIND not the label.
|
62596, this is good stuff. Posted by Guinness, Wed May-31-06 12:06 PM
if pete rock and primo give LB dope beats, then by all means rock with 'em. but as a marketing strategy, there's no real benefit. the vast majority of people on the planet who will cop off the strength of a pete rock beat are already fans of the group. ditto, more or less, for primo. my point is that if you're working those those dudes for the name and not the music, it's porbably not worth the trouble, sad as that may be.
i guess my advice would be blunt: stop rapping about rap, your place in the rap world and the struggles of being a rapper. do lots of songs about girls, tell stories, be political, talk about your friends and family, describe where you're from. use personal anecdotes and experiences to exemplify larger societal issues. be crude, be offensive, have fun.
make dudes want to be you and girls want to fuck you.

62597, a very good, slept-on reply Posted by Villain, Wed May-31-06 12:07 PM
I'm a little confused as to what the purpose of the topic is.
Is this a topic where we discuss what would make these artists' albums better?
Or are we discussing what would help them SELL better?
(I think most of us can agree the two don't always match up)
If its the former purpose then yeah, PR and Preem can't possibly hurt their albums IMO. I'd love to see it.
But it won't help them sell shit. I'm just looking for clarification.

62600, LB + Pete Rock/Preem = Preaching to the Choir Posted by danthrax, Wed May-31-06 03:11 PM
Not that there's anything wrong with that. You need to fight malaise and boredom in your core group of fans. But in the long run, yeah, you gotta capture new audiences.
Blaze or Kanye might offend some people's underground sensibilities, but you KNOW it would expand their audience even slightly.
But I think they can do a lot with 9th. He just needs to do more than pick dope beats -- he has to make a dope album. That means starting with a vision from day one, rather than throwing on random records until you have 12 bangers.

>Laugh at and clowed to no end....the hell!?..
Laughed at by who? Internet posters who download niggas' albums. How much did LB sell again? The bitches won't be laughing nor will LB when they see their a sales increase.
>LB is soulfull and all but these niggas are still a HIP-HOP group....
lol. Common is hip hop and still made The Light and Go, both chick songs. They don't have to completely sell out.
That beat was more commercially accessible than anything on TMS. The whole album doesn't need to sound like that. A single has to reach females or you won't see good #'s.
If you sign w/a major you better be trying to reach at least 250k to gold for a LB type group.
50 said it best, "You know when a record doesn't sell and an artist says they made the record for themself? Well if the record is for you, you should keep that shit in your house and listen to it in your headphones so no one can hear it but you."

62608, Introduce listeners to NC and LB's lifestyle- Posted by Mr Mystery, Fri Jun-02-06 08:46 PM
Now this may sound like nonsense and get lost in the shuffle, but hear me out. Everybody knows LB reps NC, not just the triangle but almost the whole state.
But i was listening to Lupe and Ice Cube lately. And although those albums are from different areas, i feel like i'm being introduced to a world i don't know. And i began to think thats the mark of all great groups and emcees. Listening to hip hop, you feel like you've actually been to queensbridge, east point atlanta, compton, west-side/south side chicago. But what do you know about raleigh listening to LB?
The allure of the south, has not just been dancing and snapping, but showing people a new lifestyle. Whether its candy paint, chicken and waffles, or gold teeth.
For people foreign to these locales, those intricate touches spark interests into the artist. Along with being nice on the mic, it seems you have to be sort of a tour guide.
Now i maintain what i like about lb is that they are universal, everybody can relate.
But i think with the regional mindset of many listeners, they have to find away to introduce people to their unique regional experience.
To be fair NC is hard, because its so diverse, complex and at times random-- i say that as a native. Just in durham there are about 5 different versions of the black experience in a town less than 200k.

62610, i commend ya tay... Posted by Preach, Tue May-30-06 10:32 PM
for making this post. i actually was gonna make a post asking if you could do something different or if atlantic came to you all and said "okay, what do you want us to do.." etc. what would you say? but figured that the post would just get out of hand.
but from what i've seen as a big lb fan is this: i work @ a record store and i try my best to push the hell out of the record (since i have a radio edit as well). it's like, the i-net crowd is kinda like preaching to the choir cuz the okps are already on lb's material. (but unfortunately alot of i-net people just dload and don't cop).
so, when the decision was made for let's say, the cover of the album, i understood the satire, the i-net heads understood the satire but the niggas that need to cop it, the niggas that ain't on the boards get kinda turned off. like, i have to play the music and beat niggas over the head so they know that it's dope.
but if i just say "yo, these niggas are from n.c. and are dope" and they just look at the cover, ya average nigga won't get that shit. you know smiling on your album cover is illegal in hip hop (even if it's a message involved).
the other thing by working @ the record store was the percy miracles promo ep. i love the character and think that it's hilarious, but i swear 2 things: 1) when i would play it old dirty blues people thought it was a real artist and 2) it kinda took away from promoting 'the minstrel show'. that was the promo stuff we got...so if hip hop niggas copped some cds and i let em hear 'lovin it' but they ain't have enough dough...i wanna be able to give em a sampler that has some of the cuts off the album to make the nigga go "okay, next time i'm gonna roll in there."
i have some other ideas that i would love to send ya inbox style if interested that i think is dope and that yall can benefit from if interested.
but i was wondering, if you guys put out the gangsta grillz, does it make it harder for the label to get behind the album?
i don't know how hard it is to do this, or even if it gets done w/ producers but i feel that 'little brother's name should be anywhere near 9th wonder's. like if adam levine is on ye's album it says "adam levine of maroon 5' etc. 9th's name and lb's name should be stuck like white on rice so people can put 2 and 2 together. cuz 9th getting on stuff like destiny's child, mjb etc. could open alotta doors. and again i don't know how difficult it is, but see if you guys could record some remixes. if 9th does a beat for mjb, work on something as a remix and pitch it to these labels etc. and see what happens, ya never know.
but yea, that t.i. comment woulda been the first thing i would have said. t.i. has told me he's a fan of you guys and yall are labelmates..seems good to me.
but in all honesty, tay, you gonna have to be that nigga takes alot of the load. being able to communicate w/ the audience whether it's here or blogs etc...i would call in fucking favors from all ya famous friends. every magazine gave you guys excellent rating onda album...sheeit, ask scractch or vibe or something to consider havinga segment w/ your blogs or something..a topic you can bring up by being the 'broke dude w/ a deal' thing (just a random idea off top..dunno how broke you iz)...but take advantage of that. your ability to communicate is gonna be the key.
that's the thing i feel is missing from the roots. i LOVE ?uest but he's pretty much the only spokesperson. and people that don't know the roots, if they hear ?uest talking, cuz he talks like a well rounded musician. and musicians don't act/talk like the average consumer...people that may be interested in getting into the roots, they get intimidated. and feel that they have to be extremely well read etc. to get it..when in reality, it's just dope hip hop that everyone can dig. black thought needs to be more vocal. when i see/hear thought i hear excellent skill. but don't see personality as much you know? where as someone like kanye is the opposite. he's not the greatest on the mic, but he's a fucking character etc..that's what the people relate to.
tay, folks relate to you. and not just the people onda boards, if the public have a chance they will..so my advice, call in ya favors and get as much exposure as you can, even if it's outside the music.
that's my 2cents.

Wow Phonte said Fertile Ground.
They need to get more exposure, I understand people know them, they have a good following but more exposure! I say put Amel Larrieux, Raheem Devaughn and Darien Brockington together with them and they do a tour. I can't say they are doing anything wrong, they just need more exposure. Possibly put together an album with more "well known" guest appearances possibly a mix of Jazz, hip hop and r&b and push that album. I could see them doing a song with Blackthought, Talib, Lupe, Erykah Badu, Norah Jones, of course Jill Scott(if they already haven't) Put that album out and push it hard, perform like crazy and then put out a regular Fertile Ground album.

Old folk complain so much how there's no good music out there but they stay relying on the FM Radio to find stuff. If someone starts playing them on a WBLS or something, they'll definitely get much love from that.
I don't know if them not being on a major label is whats' keeping them from this though, major label usually means they have money to pay the stations to play their shit.

after a grammy-award winning debut album they are in a weird situation because of a sophmore jinx
fans and the industry are going to want them to stick to the formula that made them successful and as an A&R director, i want my groups to remain successful and popular
but maroon 5 wants to continue to extend themselves thus, i suggest they take an atliens type approach stay with the formula...with a sprinkle of edge and have a few songs that people wouldnt expect
on their 3rd album, they can go all out

and toured more that way they could have built up a solid fan base. I saw dudes in ATL random as fuck at some bar not even trying to hear them in like 02 or 03. There were like 6 people there and all I remember thinking is DAMN that dude can sing (and they did a NIN cover, closer).
If that record would not have been popular there would be a ton of college kids riding hard for them. When they eventually blew up they would be accepted more like John Mayer and would be viewed more as artist than just pop song writers.
But now if they don't hit it big again they will fall into obscurity.

62631, RE: Jay-Z Posted by bigr2k, Wed May-31-06 12:33 AM
For Jay-Z, this dude is just on top of it right now.
He is in the perfect position, cuz if he needed to, he could bail out Def Jam by releasing an album that will for sure go 4 times platinum. With the law of supply and demand, the supply is mad little for jay with some guest verses here and there, and the demand of course is insane!
I bet most people in here hate Young Jeezy, but has memorized Jay's verse on the Go Crazy remix.
I would tell Jay-Z as an A&R to prepare an album just in case Def Jam needs it. I doubt it'll come to that as I hear the high school kids I tutor sing "Everyday I'm Hustling" like they are on the block sellin drugs themselves.
Jay-Z just needs to stay way from R. Kelly. Everytime you think those two had it with each other, they seem to always come back for some mediocre tour / half-ass album. I think that pepper spray incident forever split the two, and that'd be fine with me as Jay's A&R

62636, hype up the Jay-Z thing Posted by DJR, Wed May-31-06 12:09 AM
Bottom line...it's one of the most well known beefs in hip hop history, and now they're working together. Beyond that, they're 2 of the best to ever do it. Really play up the fact that Jay signed Nas when pushing the next album. A Nas/Jay-Z collab HAS to happen on the next Nas album IMO. I have no doubts that they'll both bring it knowing that they're on the same joint for the 1st time and given the history between them, and EVERYBODY will be checking for it.
Nas should continue on and go further with the "grown man rap" IMO. 2nd Childhood, Project Windows, Queens Day, War type of joints. Add in a few of the Nas Is Like type of joints where he's just rhyming his ass off over some hard boom bap beats. Work with Preme, Pete Rock, Kanye, Salaam Remi, Large Professor. And NO sex raps. Nas says too much gross shit in his sex raps.

62637, 1. Only fuck with producers you have established chemistry with Posted by mrhood75, Wed May-31-06 02:16 AM
Keep it to Saalam Remi, Chucky Thompson and Primo. Do not fuck around with hot producer of the minute MFs with easily-dated styles. The only exception I'd make is Kanye. He just doesn't sound that good over Timbo and Neptunes beats.
2. Stop fucking around with R&B singers. Aside from "If I Ruled the World," it's never even lead to commercial success for Nas anyway.
3. Stop saying "I'm not going to put out another Illmatic." By now we know that, and it does no real good to keep saying "This ain't Illmatic" on every single record you put out. If you expect people to move on, you as an artist must move on too. Make music dope enough that people won't have to bring up Illmatic.

62638, I agree with everything except the producer advice Posted by Ishwip, Wed May-31-06 09:40 AM
I'd wholeheartedly welcome (along w/ Primo, Salaam, and Chucky) some 9th, Just Blaze, Khrysis, Kanye, Large Professor, or Pete Rock (fanboy wish for the last one, I know).
Alchemist if he can stop being bland....
The only problem I've had w/ Salaam and Chucky is their contributions for Nas have always been solid.........good...........but rarely world-smashingly great. I'd be ok w/ those guys handling 60-70% of the tracks, but I'd like to have a couple of undeniable highlights, too, and I feel like some combination of the guys I listed could do that.

I guess I can see those (I already mentioned Kanye), but I'm really the type of person that likes a consistency of production "feel" on an album. What I really don't think would be a good idea for Nas' career is a 16 track album with 13 different producers, half of them unknown cats that the label just signed to brand new production deals.

Well, I think the best idea for Nas would be to be have an album where 1/3 to 1/2 of the beats were by Primo beats, another 1/3 were by Extra P, and the last third by Saalam and Chucky. More for Saalam, because the tracks he's done with Nas have been better.

I feel this. I wouldn't necessarily go for having ALL the guys I listed since that could become a mess...just maybe 2 of them w/ one track each and then...

62641, keep everything at 85-100 bpm. Posted by Guinness, Wed May-31-06 11:44 AM
he's never been successful at flowing over non-traditional boom-bap tempos. i'd avoid going heavy on the synth-based production too, as he always comes off best on sampled beats. use kanye, blaze, alchemist, etc. be creative with the guest appearances -- recruit jay, bring lauren back.

like he road the roc to fame now it's time to bring up the people around him he did common his next album, should just be him on beats, a few verses but GUEST APPEARANCES with nothin' but chicago mcs...up and comin', and established it should all follow the theme that he set though and reduce the musicality take it back to some less is more steez drop jon brion and get a BLACK musician, somebody like quincy jones to rock an album with or stevie, or somebody black that's musical and soulful
but this isn't realistic he should get with teddy riley, and bring back the new jack swing era of black music cuz he went "white" already...meanin' pop and crossover now it's time to make them crossover to us take his music to another direction

62645, Be careful not to fall into the "Wyclef" trap Posted by mrhood75, Wed May-31-06 02:20 AM
By now, expecting Kanye not too sport a huge ego is completely unrealisrtic, but he can't go the same path as Clef. Clef spent more and more time proclaiming he was the "Mozart of hip-hop" that his albums became exercises in showing how "smart" and "genius" he was, rather than making dope music. Kanye's done a very good job at making very dope singles and albums and should continue to focus his energy in that area.

62652, Bad Boy Records Posted by I M S, Wed May-31-06 06:25 AM
Everyone's so quick to say they fell off but how would you fix it?
|
62653, A number of things... Posted by rorschach, Tue Jul-25-06 09:36 PM
1. Get more in-house producers. Every rap song under Bad Boy sounds tired and uninspired. They need to get producers that aren't just trying to make club bangers.
2. Get new A&Rs. Anyone could tell that the last several albums released by Bad Boy weren't nearly up to the bar Diddy set in the 90s. I'm pretty sure A&Rs are supposed to see this type of thing coming.
3. Stop passing on acts b/c they're not like anyone in the roster. You're probably won't find another Big, but Bad Boy shouldn't let talent go elsewhere because they don't quite fit in with the current scene. Bad Boy is notorious for letting good talent slip away (i.e. Kanye). If I were an A&R, I would go after those acts that aren't the usual.
4. Get rid of all of the wack/stagnating acts. There's no reason holding on to acts that aren't developing. Everyone doesn't have it. Simple and plain. After two wack albums, I'd let an artist go.

62670, retire NOW and this is HOW Posted by analog2digital, Wed May-31-06 03:02 PM
I keep saying they should refrain from tainting the legacy and NOT release this album. Way too much money invested for that to happen though.
I keep having this sneaking suspicion that this album will be an L. And I've always been one of the unswerving faithful, lol. Anyways, peep:
No soundtrack. Hit the fans with a volume of 10 unreleased tracks every year for the next 4-5 years.
OutKast: From the Dungeon Chambers v.1-5
Has anybody EVER made a great use of their vault material in hip hop. Besides Pac? ?uest sounds like he has big plans for their stuff, but the Roots are nowhere near done yet.
I say they hang it up, but make it a celebration. They could stagger it like Nike does with the throwback Jordans.
2006: Southernplaya era 2007: ATLiens era 2008: Aquemini era 2009: Stankonia/Love Below
They need to George Lucas the game. Put out a vault CD with a remastered version of that era's disc as a bonus.
They don't even have to wait a year between releases (b/c while popular, they ain't the Beatles). It could be 3-6 months. Like the Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions.
Liner notes by ?uesto, L.A. Reid, John Frye and Rico Wade. Since Dre would probably feel it's demeaning or corny to go back to his old work.
Hell, do it as an iTunes exclusive. They would rake it in.
At least from people who even know they've done 5 albums to begin with...

62674, He need to do a song with a singer. A singer gonna help him blow Posted by FireBrand, Thu Jun-01-06 06:57 AM
on a higher level than any rapper gonna help him. Cus he honestly aint TOO Strong on the mic. I like him, he ride the beat in that detroit manner.
But at the end of the day, what's the difference lyrically with him and say a Big Tone.
So IMO, he would get outshinned- prolly eclipsed 'n shit by a MC that could help his shit blow on a higher level.
But a singer tho?
make a radio friendly jawn?
shit.
That said, I wanna hear him and median get together.

first... Break bread get Kanye to be on a song, No Production...we know how much that nigga charges a beat...Let 9th do the beat! shit make the song basically a "I SEE NOW" PART II ...that joint was hot but a mixtape song as usual
second...Kryhsis has to do at least 3 joints on the album at least 3...i heard "Kryhsis on the boards with the heat" instrumental album.... shit was HOTT ....i was definitely salty dude Tagged the beats at the end with his voice....couldn't jack it
third....Do a Joint with Nelly Furtado....The Roots did it...I'm sure it will work for LB's....i know she's doing her "LOOSE" thang right now, but LB and Nelly Furtado...could mean "MONEY MONEY MONEY"
Last but not Least...
NO SKITS TAY....NO SKITS...Ya'll niggas got a good sense of humor ya'll funny n shit...but when you get a listener that checks ya'll out with an attitude like "Who da fuck is little brother?" ...last thing they wanna hear is "SKITS" ..... i still hear people hating on kanye sometimes for his skits on College Dropout And LR
^^^^ this is all my honest opinion man, i didn't want to bullshit you with some go the "real hip-hop" route n get primo, etc etc...on the album... LOOK mainstream listeners don't even acknowledge primo as a great producer..they'll take timbaland over primo anyday...but thats them ignorant! .... but "Minstrel Show" was Real Hip-Hop at its purist.....so i can't tell you to get anymore Real...its Been Real!

They should make an album together (a la Black Star). The album should be a concept album with no bullshit filler and beats that don't sound like anything we've ever heard from any rapper, let alone them. Also, the beats should be from no more than two or three producers.
They could name the album "Jay & Nas Are The Greatest" or "The Legends" or something less corny like...
iont know. Call it "The Soundtrack".

62682, DMX new Release Posted by speaksfromtheheart, Wed Aug-02-06 03:34 PM
Taking the fantasy A&R Challenge from today's news. This should be like a fantasy league. Fantasy A&R Lol
For DMX I think he is on the right track but he needs to seriously get out there and tour!! Not just with himself or whom you would think but mix it up. DMX seems like he is trying to expand and go in a slightly different direction with his new album, more focused and influential. He should do a tour with a live band(not the roots specificially) but a live band of course have a DJ but put together a tour with himself and maybe Nas all with a live band. DMX needs to remind people of why he still relevent. He should do some of his older stuff, cover other peoples songs that inspired him. Also hit up a grassroots promotion and marketing strategy. Let the people speak for him, if the record company isn't doing it, do it yourself. He also needs to stay out of trouble!! He is more known for his recent mishaps than his music which is not good. When people think of DMX they have of his music and accomplishments to hip hop not his arrests. Also focusing on the new Belly 2 will help alot. Put some tracks from his new album on there when it comes out.
