Posted by Chi_guy4lyfe, Tue Oct-11-05 10:57 PM
lot of people don't understand Jay-Z didn't need to come Nas in the first place, but he did it because he knew he get some good compation if he did. Nas heard Jay and that but a fire under his butt and "made" him step up his pen game up. If Jigga just didn't say anything at Nas in the first place, Nas would be a Vh1 special titled "Where are They Now".

You're ugly.
You use Biggie's lines too much.
You're old and you box.
Some made up story about you calling me while running through a project building even though you would be a kid when that call would have occured.
Eminem had a better verse than you on Renegades.

takeover was somethin' that even nas fans had to be like, uh oh, you don't want it with hov
only people who liked ether were people who hate jay
51797, Eh, I like Jay and I like "Ether"
Posted by mrhood75, Mon Oct-10-05 04:54 PM
However, I am under no illusion that it was the "death blow" in the battle or somehow crippled Jay-Z in any way. It was just a harsh, funny as hell dis track. Nothing more, nothing less.
51798, but ether really wasn't funny though..it was corny

51799, Can't front, the "Tae Bo ho" line still cracks me up
Posted by mrhood75, Mon Oct-10-05 05:41 PM
Ditto with the "no mustache havin'" line and "I rock ho's, you rock fellas."

The shit wasn't "No Vaseline"; it didn't forever alter the way I thought of Jay, but it was still funny and Nas brought some passion to the rhyme, which he hadn't done in years.
51800, and really before that...
Posted by Dr Claw, Tue Oct-11-05 11:18 PM
Nas was NEVER funny.

His tracks had little to no humor in it...not even something to make you LOL...

but when he started off with that "Gay-Z and Cock-A-Fella" shit... LOL...rewind, rewind, rewind.

takeover was rough dude

i still dunno who "won" but that was not a weak diss track

"you're a dick riding faggot, you love the attention, queens niggas run you niggas ask russell simmons"

that's pretty rough, esp b/c at the time Jay-Z was just releasing some shit for "the attention" see: hey papi

nas is far from perfect and his share of wackness, but either was a nasty diss

Posted by AquamansWrath, Mon Oct-10-05 04:23 PM
Jay Lost. Period. But not to ether.
Prince is the truth.
D'angelo is not comparable to Prince, nor should he be compared...
he's a damn good songwriter/singer in his own right.
Who the fuck is BunB? smirk.
Phife fell off years ago.
Sure another Blackstar is welcomed... but fellas... do the right thing.. use the producers from the fucking first album already. And pay them this time.

Madlib is dope.... but sloppy... yet it still works.
Can someone please find the JayDee in Dilla?
More people deserve credit for Voodoo than just D.
Will someone please assassinate Dwele's agent/stylist/A&Rteam?
When the fuck will MC's stop singing?
Why are mixtapes better than albums?

Kanye is not a superproducer... he's a male model for Ebony.
And Jet. And Essence. And Ultrasheen/UltraPerm cosmetics.
And Ebony Male. And Sister2Sister.

Kanye is about two steps away from being a Bronner Brothers ad, but the question remains... which one of the twins will he be? The one in the business suit working in the office at 7pm, or the one in front of the fire place wearing a bikini while holding red wine?
Hmm.

OH, and Kanye is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy overrated...for my money
Dilla
Hi-Tek
88 Keys
Ge-ology
Madlib
and
Just Blaze are better than Kanye in terms of hiphop. However the man has range, technicality, money, and a predatorial mover and shaker "make it happen" mentality. That's why he wins.

Usher is not Michael Jackson.
Justin Timberlake is not Michael Jackson.

Marquis Houston is 49 years old.

Michael just may be the greatest performer to ever live.

That "Touch" video by that cat was pretty ill. Really that and the User joint "U don't have to call" being the closest run. But he still has em by a mile or so.

Prince is definitely the greatest recording artist of our last few generations.

What does Miles/Madlib/and Prince have in common?
Be was aiight. Corners and Go! was incredible.
Electric Circus had some ill moments and is underatted.

People who talk shit about the talent of Jimi Hendrix are doing so damn near 40 years after the fact after countless recordings, films, documentaries about the man. Try doing that in 1966-70. Different story.
51854, Pretty much.

get past the self-loving, tree hugging, incredibly non-descript arrangements and guitar playing and you have an average vocalist with enough lyrical depth to make Lenny Kravitz blush...

Jill, Erykah, Teedra, Faith, Carmen Rodgers are ALL better than India or Alicia "Look I Know An F Chord" Keys will EVER be and I *just* named 5...me could go on.

Posted by AquamansWrath, Mon Oct-10-05 07:15 PM
I don't think it was a classic case of lightskinned verus darkskinned as much as I think it's pimped versus unpimped. Mechelle is a artist... Alicia is a recording artist with a stylist. A huge difference... you would see Mechelle and love her style.. .but she just rolled out of bed. You would see Alicia and hate her style... yet she took five hours.
51945, ^^Bullsh*t. Look. Alicia's music is more appealing than Meshelle's.

2Pacalypse Now is probably one of my top ten to fifteen all-time favorite albums, followed by Strictly For My N****z. Pac was lyrically at his most intelligent and thoughtful of humanity at this stage in his career. In fact, he brought political fire on 2Pacalypse. What's most ironic about Pac is how Dan Quayle tried to get his work banned after putting out a political album but as soon as he went gangster and started selling records for the establishment, the movement to end 2Pac's music disappeared at the gov't level. Interesting, no?

I remember back in '91 when that shit came out and nobody really knew who the fuck he was. White folks would be like "who listenin' to?" I would respond, "Tupac Shakur" and they would be like "TupACK, what the hell kind of stupid shit is that." Now look at these slobbering freaks.

He jumped on Kanye's sack. Com didn't pay him no mind until he was hitting. They battled/freestyled once, and Common wouldn't cop one track from him.

Kanye blew up, and now Common's tellin everyone they're best buds.

Com went to NY to join the veggie crew, and ran back to Chi to join in the fun. His journey into pretentious "artistry" was thwarted, and one of the most respected lyricists started appearing in Kanye videos as a stand in, wearing monkey suits, dressed up as security gaurds.

Besides 2 Jaydee tracks, Soulquarians couldn't get a damn rimshot on "Be".

He knew everyone was praising his Resurrection days, so when all else failed, he ran back to that formual. "Guess what everyone! I'm back!".

Good album, but Kanye stole the show. Common became 2nd banana.

Oh, artist worked with a hot producer...that's never been done before. Plus, I'd venture and say Kanye is "tellin everyone they're best buds" in equal fashion. Basically, its a two-way deal.

Ummm, he went to NY to work with other like-minded artists. Maybe you'd like him to still be in Chi putting out CDRs like Juice? Besides, he repped Chi even when he wasn't working with Chi producers. This is like saying jayz sold out ny by working with non-ny producers/artists?

this *is* hip hop where loyalty and attention spans are not a prerequisite. His partership with commercial hip hop's golden child was all too contrived and more obvious than not. Be is a cool album but its an album he *had* to make.

He's made it clear that in the battle of commercial viability vs artistic integrity what he'd choose. You also can't respect someone who, artistically, doesn't stand by their own and makes a concentrated effort to distance themselves from themselves and their output just 3 short years ago. Is it a good album or not? All that other "his relationship with his producer is contrived" talk means nothing. Are you listening to albums or writing for the enquirer? On the real, Be is far less "contrived" or a "reach" than EC. This is just hating on Kanye by proxy....

you are demanding a good/bad answer from others when you have YET to state whether you feel the album was good or not but rather refute any criticism over the album (See post titled "WRONG" for fucks sake...lol!)

Be is a "solid" album. I haven't changed that opinion since the date of its release. I do *however* question Com's credibility as an artist and Be is the most recent culmination of it. Will I say it? Hell, the fuck yeah. There are artists who are hella impressionable and need people to think for them creatively and there are those secure in their art and stand by it as testaments of where they were at the time, good, bad or indifferent. Com is the former.

I think it's a very good album. One of the best hip hop releases this year. Also, none of you have criticized the albums, just his motivations behind it. The only question should be whether the music is good, not if him and Kanye were ever the best of friends...

Hells no.

Personally, I think Puffy's promotion machine keeps Biggie in people's skulls because Biggie's legacy = Puff's industry oxygen. Dude had 2 albums...2 albums. Even if BOTH albums were classic (neither were, but I'll GRANT the first album "classic" status just for the impact it had on people), it was still only 2 albums.

Hardly an "era".

Biggie is the hip-hop Jim Morrison. Meager talent, with a legacy.

Pete Nice was EXTREMELY lyrical, and had a style that was 110% his own.

Paul C changed the face of hip-hop production, and is one of the ROOTS of pure, New York boom bap: Large Pro, Pete Rock, Primo, D.I.T.C., Beatminerz, etc...

Rick Rubin (see Paul C)

Everlast would get a shitload of more props if he wasn't a White dude. He's reinvented himself so many times, it's ridiculous. Him and Pete Nice both weren't charactures.

RUN DMC is hall of fame material! Even if you don't like their old stuff, just listen to Down with the King and listen to how they came strong on that comeback. I still rock Tricky, Mary Mary, Walk This Way, Run's House, Tougher than Leather, Its Like That, etc. Some people should have their hip hop passes revoked. These guys brought hip-hop to a level it would never have reached without them. If it wasn't for them we'd be listening to two generations of Beastie Boys knockoffs and nobody would be happy with that.

Dude.

The fact that your argument includes the words "electronica" and "IDM" is evidence that your ideas of quality are in context of bullshit self indulgent critics.

Jay Dee is worshipped and emulated by musicians of all sorts, not to mention pioneers of real musical movements--not Pitchfork-defined subgenres.

Dilla works with better artists than any of the ones U just mentioned (bar Ghostface). And Off the top he's worked with Daft Punk, Spacek and Poe. FYI none of them are hip hop or labelled conscious. U probably haven't heard much of Dilla's catalogue so I'll be easy on U.

i'm a Prefuse fan and i agree he doesn't get the credit he deserves on the lesson, even though all the clownin is due to his own arrogance. and i agree with you he's versatile, but you'd have to be a fan to know about his different projects.

however, you obviously ain't that familiar with dilla. he's always gonna be that guy that's linked to the whole soulquarian movement. but as far as hip hop beats, he's real versatile. and he's produced for (neo) soul and rnb artists if you're talkin genres.

besides almost all soulquarian.. I have heard his work with De La, Tribe, Busta Rhymes, Slum Village, Q-Tip, Stonesthrow, Pharcyde, Welcome 2 Detroit and many of those beat tapes etc...

are you going to tell me that hip hop isn't the majority of his work?

exactly where have I denied Jay Dee's versatility?

neo soul/rnb doesn't mean much since hip hop uses soul samples......

>Prefuse ranges from hiphop, electronica, IDM, breakbeat etc...

WOW! What range! Its funny though....because it all sounds the same! Dilla may stick 95% to hiphop, but he has come up with some incredibly inventive stuff that has been copycated like crazy. Ask Kanye or the Neptunes who has influenced them the most....in fact, all your favourite producers will all claim that Dilla's sound has had some influence on them at one time or another...

And Prefuse can't tear a sample like Dilla, but make it sound so effortlessly smooth.

>Prefuse works with different types of artists... from Aesop
>Rock, Diverse, Ghostface to people like Cafe Tacuba, The Books
>etc....

Woooo....those are some crazy different artists!!! Dilla has worked with De La, Spacek, Dwele, Busta, Toshi Kubota, Badu, N'Dea Davenport....just about as "different" if you ask me.

>who does Jay Dee make music with besides the concious circle

See above

>sorry but either you don't know what versatility is or you
>don't know shit about Prefuse and you are just talking

Ummm....sorry, but either you don't know your hip hop history, or you are a newby fanboy to the electronica scene and that's why Prefuse has you cummin in your pants. Now I'm not saying that Prefuse isn't original and damn clever with what he's done....but come on man?! Dilla has done things that peeps never thought possible...he basically created a sub-genre of music. Dilla can duplicate any sound.

And if 3 is too hard for you, name 2 Prefuse classics...

One is the greatest song-writer of all-time with a storied carrying spanning over 40 years, the other is a dork with a band-aid on his face. Does not compute.

Bob Dylan changed the way pop music was recorded. For the better. Get annoyed with his voice all you want, but the man has serios skill. And he still records good music over 40 years after entering the game. I can't think of another artist recording now that does that.

Examples:

Common moves to NY and goes gold w/ LWFC.

Kanye moves to NY to produce for the Roc, then drops Dropout.

Tung Twista puts a reggae-twinged debut album out that gets shitted on, and doesn't get recognition until he comes back on a cameo verse that gets memorized word-for-word via mixtapes down south months before the video's on television.

Shawwna puts an album out on a major label as one half of Infamous Syndicate, it goes nowhere, she relocates to ATL and drops the hook on a Luda single and is crowned the "Queen of Chicago" out of nowhere. Her more talented partner, on the other hand, is still hosting a weekend mixshow on 'GCI. And she grew up filthy fucking rich, too. Don't let Buddy's records about bein' broke and havin' the blues fool you.

Brat's biggest success was experienced when JD had people still thinkin' she was from Atlanta. In fact, she didn't even mention anything about being from Chicago until Common had established the city's first traces of credibility within the industry.

Crucial Conflict went gold on the strength of sounding like a more country version of Bone when Bone was at the height of it's popularity.

Super Bowl Shuffle is still the biggest selling rap single that's ever been released out of Chicago.

Pretentiousness sucks.

Hip hop is not dead, because it was never alive.

People are bigger than music.

"Racism" and "prejudice" are closely related to the word "genre".

Fanaticism is a disease of the mind.

Music is music.

Positive (conscious) music makes people chringe because the world is ugly.

Negative (commercial) music makes people forget that the world is ugly.

Life is somewhere in between the positive and the negative.

Judgementalism is a result of both the extremes of positive and negative music.

Most okayplayers are not interested in developing good conversations about music, and are not considerate of other people's opinions.

I haven't been able to listen to a roots album all the wya thru since dym???? Something about black thoughts flow is kinda annoying (kinda like stephen a smith is when he's yelling)

If emenim wasn't white, he'd be on tour with canibus and afu-ra as the opening act

El-P gots no rhythm, and his beats are hilarious as a result

Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn my be the best songwriting duo EVER

No hiphop artist is harder than any delta blues artist.

PE is the GOAT group and outkast is a close second

NY hiphop is sad and pathetic and has been since puffy

both biggie and tupac are cash cows...nothing more, nothing less

Kanye is dope. Cats is just mad cuz he blew up doin something simple. Whie other producers are worrying about which snare and how to infintely chop samples....buddy just chose soulful sample over somebody's already chosen drum. K.I.S.S.

the 808 is the greatest drum machine ever.
