40917, R.I.P. GANGSTARR
Posted by topspin, Mon May-02-05 03:29 PM
Looks like some of ya'll got your wish...

After more than a decades worth of bangers behind them, the dynamic duo of G.ifted U.nlimited R.hymes U.niversal & the almighty Primo, have called it quits (collectively). No swipe available, I got the word directly from Guru's boy Gusmo (*see Sililoquy Of Chaos*), as he was reaching out to me via AOL-IM in efforts to get me Guru's new solo wax (he's Guru's wax/college radio promo cat now or something).

I initially was clowning, saying he shoulda said something to GURU about his new album cover (w/ the strange shot of Guru holding a sword infront of the green numbers & letters Matrix pattern). He said that decision was all up to Guru, & how he's his own man. Then he dropped 'Gangstarr's broke up' outta nowhere...

After the Ownerz, alotta folks voiced their desire to see this happen, well here it is.

I know I'ma miss em together...

Thoughts...?

you think that guru and primo have been in the studio 9-5 every day since the late 80s? years passed in between some of their albums. when they record together, they're a group, when they're not recording together they're not a group. i doubt there's a document binding them together as "group". don't even bother responding if you can only grasp the kindergartener-level aspect of what i am saying.
40944, disbanded... is that better for you asshole?

Even though Primo haz admitted dat they have broken up before (more than once) I doubt dat Guru'z wordz mean much (even though he'z da only one who deservez da right to uze da name GangStarr) since he waz da one cauzin' all da beef between him & Primo.

If I hear it from dem both or even frum Premeir himself den I would accept da newz of dem breakin' up.

But we all know dat dem breakin' up doezn't mean dat they will never do muzik together again.

Posted by trouble man, Mon May-02-05 04:08 PM
i hope this isn't true. guru is just alright when he ventures off and does his solo shit. he needs dj premier. facts are facts. i know they were unhappy with virgin, so i hope this is just a move to get out of that situation. i hate these fuckin' record labels. i believe jive is the biggest reason that a tribe called quest broke up back in '98.

Posted by GangStarr, Mon May-02-05 04:17 PM
okay - so yeah its moments like these when having a log-in named after a group/artist is really dumb, but ive been here too long to change.

plus i had 'greeneyedbandit' a looooooong ass time ago, but i forgot the password before i changed it. (in addition to being original, im also a genius).

ANYWAY AS FAR AS THE ACTUAL GROUP - Well, they already put in a lot of work. Time off/retirement isn't a bad thing. If you are still waiting for GangStarr to change the game, you apparently have missed one of the greatest groups in hip-hop's influence on their art.

As long as I'm still allowed to keep the albums I have - I'm not sweating it.

>But that last album was pretty weak, and I don't think they
>could do much but tarnish the legacy at this point.

how can u say u love gang starr and say these songs are weak:

Skillz
Werdz From The Ghetto Child
Rite Where U Stand
Zonin'
Same Team, No Games
Deadly Habitz
PLAYTAWIN
Riot Akt
The Ownerz

shit.. u wernt feelin these???

40997, Everyone nuts themselves over Playtawnin
Posted by johnny_domino, Mon May-02-05 08:15 PM
I liked some of the songs (Skillz, Rite Where U Stand, Deadly Habitz was allright), but by and large it just didn't have many standout tracks, in fact, aside from Skillz, the best of it would have been just album tracks on their other albums, not standouts. It's been awhile since I listened, so maybe I'm neglecting a good song or two, but I would rate their albums that I own

5 stars- Step in the Arena
5 stars- Moment of Truth (maybe 4 3/4, or 4 1/2, on further reflection)
5 stars- Hard To Earn
4 1/2 stars- Daily Operation
3 stars- The Ownerz

So yeah, it's well below the standard of their previous work, and it ranks as one of the biggest disappointments (in terms of how much I anticipated it, vs. how much I actually enjoyed it and felt compelled to listen to it) of recent years.
40998, ..fair enough

41007, the problem with The Ownerz was mostly Guru
Posted by johnny_domino, Mon May-02-05 07:26 PM
the beats were not great, but not bad either, but Guru was just not up to par on that album. He sounded lazy, old, and mad.
41008, mad and old...maybe
Posted by Dr Claw, Tue May-03-05 04:35 PM
...but Guru had that "trifecta" on that Bald Head Slick and the Click album, not the Ownerz...Premier doesn't let him spit BS on his tracks.

Ownerz will go down in Gang Starr lore as the "angry" album. Guru was P.O.ed, so was Premier, and it shows in the tracks...there's definitely an air of tension on the track. As far as Guru was concerned, there were only two major points points that really were "wack":

- recycling of a verse he had "freestyled" on "Capture (Militia Part III)"

- going overboard with the greasy talk/braggadocio on several tracks

some might mention the "degweez" line but that was hilarious especially with the way that atruhead pointed it out:

"degweez

that's horrible"

LMAO.

Guru's performance on "Sabotage", and "Zonin" pretty much kept the any other minor shortfalls in check.

shit though, i guess i sortof agree with the idea that they went out on top, Daily Operation and Step into the Arena are top 50 hip hop albums of all time IMO
41018, This will be all over the net in 5..4..3..2..1..

41022, what he failed to say was
Posted by UniversalXplorer, Tue May-03-05 06:06 AM

that it was a greatest hits joint.

But on the real,I'd cop a digitally re-mastered Gangstarr boxset.

Bonus Instrumental Discs

a DVD of all their videos and a behind the scenes documentary on Gangstarr.

41023, ????? they already put out a greatest hits
Posted by Nabs, Tue May-03-05 01:36 PM
and it sold well at that!

Posted by UniversalXplorer, Tue May-03-05 02:13 PM

I got mine in the special promotional metal casing. It
was good, but I'm talking the works.Instrumentals for all the tracks, bundled with their videos and a documentary.More of a Box set than a greatest hits CD.

And I haven't much to say on this split cause it's apparent the union wasn't working for a long time.
41030, where
Posted by budz4zo, Tue May-03-05 02:30 PM
where did u hear about this "gang starr in '06"? and where did u hear it was a box set?
41031, Bull and Shit

I'm waiting for official word. This just cannot stand. I'm used to them doing their own thing (Jazzamatazz, Baldhead Slick and the Clique) but it has, and always will be, Guru and Premier. So The Ownerz didn't set the world ablaze like so many people wanted it to. I'm not buying the breakup shit just yet.

However....

If it does prove true, you better put be on suicide alert like they had to do my brother when EPMD broke up.

*puts on Credit Is Due, then Mass Appeal for 5 hours in constant prayer vigil*
41032, Ummm... Tribe Redux, anyone (contract struggle)?
Posted by soulsike, Wed May-04-05 01:42 AM
they're caught up in litigation w/ Virgin right now. They thought they were done w/ their contract and ready to go elsewhere, Virgin said "you got more". GS are trying to make the Hits & Vids set the last, but Virgin saying Hits don't count, you owe another full studio set...

*sound familiar Tribe fans?*

Tribe "broke up" cause they were mad at Jive. Took a few years off, Jive put out a Hits set and a Rarities set. Tribe thought that finished their contract, said "We're back together!". Jive said "Oh, good. Now that you're together again, remember that Hits sets don't count in your contract. Anything you record together is ours. We put those comps out just to keep fresh product in the market" Tribe "breaks up" again...

As far as GangStarr goes, I'm kinda glad, cause now that Jermaine Dupri is head of Urban EMI, do we really want Guru rapping to Dupri's bells (on a sure sign of the end times, a Primo/Dupri CO-PRODUCTION???? *shivers*)
41033, Whether YOU liked "The Owners" or not...

this is somewhat sad to me. That Matrix looking album cover design for Guru's album shows his solo decision making is iffy.
