18339, At what point does a Record/CD collection get ridiculou
Posted by te_pakeha, Mon Oct-14-02 02:07 PM
I'm close to 300 (ie albums not singles or EPs) CDs, not counting the few burnt ones I have (I burn then buy). My close friends are fellow addicts, although they're lagging around the 150-200 mark, but everyone else thinks I've got a problem. Now what I want to know is where I'm fitting in terms of OKP collections, like am I a minnow in terms of collections or getting up there? In other words, how many CDs have you all got?

To keep things properly in perspective how many do you folks own..but don't count 12", singles, EPs etc, because that's not fair, especially to us people on the bottom of the globe that just plain don't get access to anything other than top 40 singles let alone limited edition presses.

Oh yeah, and burns don't count either, nor do MP3 collections, because things could get silly.

Just straight cds I have about 450. It all started when I first got a cd player and planned on buying a cd a week to build a good collection and then slowing. Never happened. This summer I converted everything to mp3 disks so i could move to college easier without lugging them around or worrying. And in the process copied my friends and local library collections. I'm now at over 800 maybe close to 900 albums. Not only does my computer play them but my stereo and I have an IRiver SlimX portable cd player also. I still buy cds but switch them over to MP3 just for ease of use.

when you get rid of furniture to make room for your collection.

and then after you have no room, you start foolishly stacking cabinets on top of other cabinets...

this is just 2 of the things that happen when you have too many dvds, laserdiscs, cds and live in a studio apt.

when you buy the newspaper strictly to thumb thru the office depot/officemax/staples catalogs to see if the good and sturdy bookcases are on sale this week

when you contemplate traveling to London because their Ikeas have the dope vinyl furniture (vinyl cabinets) and the US Ikea's aint trynna hear why they should carry that type of shit.

when you contemplate getting a carpenter to come to the house and give you estimates on ice'n out some built-in storage units with glass doors, locks, low voltage lights and such

when the house is a sty because vinyl litters every corner and most points in between.

when you accidentally buy duplicates of vinyl.

when you purposely buy duplicates of an album and create reasons for doing so(look they have SITKOL with the extra bonus disk for a $1!! the fools!! Oh my gawd there's another copy of Minnie Riperton's Stay In Love in here for a buck! at worse i can sell this shit on ebay. it pays to have 2 copies. well i could juggle this when i learn how to. ummmmmmmm maybe somebody will wanna trade in the future, yeah thas the ticket!)

Shit, if I had money to spend, I'd probably own every album to ever come out. I'm addicted! It's not just to the music either. It's to the whole package, the music, cover art, liner notes etc. I probably have around 2 hundo. But I buy albums and bring a lot back to get money if I need the doe and don't feel the album at the time. But I've then bought albums that I've turned in again. When you act like I do, then you have a problem. My problem is that I don't have the money to buy all this shit! I probably have bought around 500 albums in my life. But what I want to know is how many albums ?uestlove has. I know he's a musaholic like a muthafucka! He buys everything!

When you come out of Amoeba with a $300 receipt, then you know it's a bit much...ha ha.

But for real...I don't try to rationalize it. I remember in high school when I was buying CD's all the time, this kid said that I was wasting my money. He was on some..."You coulda bought blah blah blah w/ all that loot you're spending." True, but I would be without some bomb music. I just hit over 500 a couple weeks ago, and I'm currently looking for a case to hold 1,000.

Look, if you like the music, then who cares how many cd's you got. But if you're buying it just to be buying it...eh...that's another.

I told her the next day that I would be in Amoeba for ten hours. She got a little mad but understands that I love music so much that she's willing to compromise. Keep in mind that I've never been to Amoeba. After all the stories I've heard about it, I plan to go in there wearing some Depends or some shit.

There should be a therapy group or something. I plan to drop a lot of money down there.

Or ...when you only have time to rock what's in front of your stereo(the latest dig)-yes, I have a problem!

If you buy Lps or CDs on your lunch break(INSTEAD of lunch) you have this all too common malady.(as part of my therapy, I will admit to actually getting on the Metro on my lunch hour and hitting up spots. Hell, I may go on a bender today!)

i've had to cut back in a major way, since i'm finally out and about on my own (well, living with my girlfriend). i've only been buying a few cds a month... in a way though, it's been a blessing. you know those times i used to spend 75 bucks a pop at the record store? it became something i took for granted... now when i walk into the store with a limit to how much i can spend... i really relish those records.

but i'm on sabbatical, because i've fallen behind on the star trek: tng dvd collections... i haven't been able to afford season 4 yet.

My record collection is rediculous now. I have racks that go almost all they way up to the wall and I still records that I can't put away anywhere. I can't move around in my production room and it's to the point where I don't want to work sometimes. It gets worse after a day of crate digging because I am allergic to the smell of mildew from the old flea market/dollar bin records.

You know the collection is ridiculous when:

-You have over 5 hundred but could with time list them all one by one.

-In times of boredom you organize the collection (novice collectors go with alphabetical, some by genre, then artists who work or have worked with other artists, time period, record label).

-When you no longer take hours at a record store because any given store probably only has MAYBE 1 album you need for your collection (and that is a big MAYBE, as you only have about a dozen "Holy Grail" albums left to buy, not including new stuff)

-But you check the Import Section of every major record store-- just in case--and if said major record store doesn't have an Import Section, then later for that place.

-When people ask you how many albums you have, you sometimes get mixed up and don't know whether or not to count vinyl, cds or both. You don't even bother counting cassette tape (mostly because you bought all those again on cd and vinyl anyway).

-You got a credit card mainly because you can only find several "Holy Grail" albums online.

-You can easily connect The Beach Boys to Mos Def in the six degrees of separation music game, using your liner notes as proof to back you up.

-If you have your cds in cd book cases, you have the liner notes organized separately.

-You keep open slots in your collection, placed in a precise spot, for upcoming albums or albums you need to pick up.

-Without thinking about it, one of the first things you notice when walking into someone's room/living room/etc. is their record collection, where it is, how big it is, what's in it and how it's organized.

-You learned not to put pressure on the cds from putting too many together in a case thus forming those bubbles inside them that makes the album skip and cannot be fixed.

-You have dozens of albums in your collections that you consider MUST HAVES for anyone that calls him/herself a serious music collector (ie: Songs in the Key of Life, Kind of Blue, Blue, What's Goin On', 3 Feet High and Rising, Abbey Road, Blonde on Blonde etc) Moreover, if people DO NOT own them, suddenly their opinion concerning music no longer matter.

-If you see a good soundtrack and buy it only if it is all original music/score or containing mostly songs you can't get anywhere else--otherwise you just buy all the albums with songs on the soundtrack.

-You saw High Fidelity and thought it was your biography.

-Many of your albums you haven't listened to all the way through. Quite a few you only scanned through when you first bought it, for about five minutes, just to assure yourself that it was a worthwhile buy.

I didn't read everyone's replies, but for me, record shelves take up the majority of wall space in my bedroom... and my closet.

I'd say it starts to get ridiculous when you're even saying to yourself, "Man, where in the F@#$ am I gonna put THESE?" yet you buy them anyway.

Or another example is when you don't put records away right after buying them because putting them away requires making space and moving things down (and possibly to other shelves if needed), so you have to set aside a certain amount of time just to file things away.

And yes, that's autobiographical right there. Right now I've got about two feet of records and two 8 inch tall stacks of CD's that need to be put away. That'll take me about an hour and a half. I've been slacking off lately.

-When you go to your best local music store 1)they know you personally; 2)they have saved albums for you that you wanted; 3)they have saved albums for you that you didn't know you wanted but now desperately need; 4)they let you in the storage rooms alone for hours on end

-When you work at a music store(where you get everything at cost) yet continue to shop at many other places

-When namechecking The Roots, Nick Cave, Joe McPhee, Midnight Oil, James MacMillan, Art Blakey and Henry Cow all in one sentence makes total sense to you.

-When you have an album on CD but you buy it on vinyl just so the artwork is bigger

-When you really DO care if a record is a first pressing.

-When you look for "white labels"

-When Tuesdays are the best day of the week.

That's what I meant. I can sell a good record and make some decent money on eBay, then use that money to also get other albums I've been wanting for awhile, sometimes much cheaper than getting it elsewhere. Always better than tossing it at Goodwill.

I got nothing.

You win again.
