170195, RIP Menphyel7
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Apr-13-15 06:07 PM
not sure how many people knew but he was battling cancer for a while.
Just found out today that he passed away recently. not sure of the day but yea....

he was very passionate about music
as evidenced by his participation on this very board.
he was just an all around positive and wonderful spirit
he was always uplifting and supporting others
it was easy to forget that he was fighting for his life and needed uplifting himself.

peace to his family, especially his daughter and to any and everybody who knew him.
he is missed already

we love you josh.

peace.

170196, R.I.P. Peace to all his family, friends, and those he loved/loved him

170197, Talked to him all the time on twitter...
Posted by OldPro, Mon Apr-13-15 06:11 PM
And never knew. Amazing he could just go on like that and just keep pushing ahead. Just found out about an hour ago what happened. Will miss seeing that brother's good nature and sense of humor. Best to his family.. I know he loved them kids big time.
170198, damn, he put me on to some stuff I would have never considered listening to

170206, i don't use the phrasing "fuck cancer"
Posted by Mash_Comp, Mon Apr-13-15 06:31 PM
I'd rather focus that venom and energy on hoping for a cure for cancer so that good brothers and daddies like that brother can keep living and providing light to the world.

170207, indeed.

170208, RIP. Love talking music (and sports) with him.
Posted by PROMO, Mon Apr-13-15 06:31 PM
I will honestly miss his presence around here because he was one of a rarer breed of Lessonheads that still had some damn sense about music.
170209, this just really bummed me out man
Posted by Small Pro, Mon Apr-13-15 06:38 PM
dude was one of my favorites. could debate mostly any kind of music convo folks were havin on here or twitter, and seemed like somebody i'd kick it and have a drink with. knew he was sick, but damn.
170210, rest in peace...

logged in to show some love. menph inspired me over the years by how genuine, unique, and passionate he was. he always stayed true to himself, didn't care if it was popular or not. talk about an original cat… damn y'all.

this is really sad, thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.

about the guys he rode hard for especially southern artists.

then you'd see him in a post about hiatus kaiyote
or if searched for like an old post about sonnymoon or some shit
and he'd be in there, in a post before they got even a lil
recognition lol.

one of the good guys on here.

RIP.
170213, Man I saw Kay Dee's tweet like an hour ago and my heart sank
Posted by Bombastic, Mon Apr-13-15 06:57 PM
Still have a DM from him on there with his address because I was gonna put a package of some books/flicks to send over to him while he recovered and like an asshole I never actually got to the post office before forgetting about it.

I knew he was battling but he seemed good up until going quiet in the past month or so and was too caught up to notice much before getting today's news.

Not sure why considering it was cancer but it really never crossed my mind that he might not make it.

Heartbreaking, dude was always one of the coolest and fairest contributors in this forum since the beginning.

And while he had his areas of concentration (Southern rap obviously being #1 on the list, he was open to music of any kind from Modest Mouse to blues to Sqad Up mix tapes (he was the one who put me up on the 4th one when it dropped and sorta sprung Wayne's second act before the Carter series).

And he never really had an agenda or took shit personally if you hated something he dug (I went in on that last indie-rock Big Boi album that he took as a wonderful stylistic expansion).

Or ever really actively hated on anyone.......well, besides Wyclef for his contributions towards the decline of TI's career in the mid-2000s......and when he did so it was hilarious because you were so not used to hearing him go at an artist like that so his rage and Clef being Clef it was pure comedy.

I hope his suffering on the way out wasn't too brutal and extended.

Condolences to his family, in particular his wife and daughter.

Like a lot of OKPs, I never actually met him in the physical but really felt like I knew him and would have been great to hang with if I was ever in ATL or him LA.

Much love and respect, Menph we miss u already.
170214, Didn't know him personally...

It's become cool to shit on the Lesson now days

But man, there was a time when this was internet hip hop ground zero. We were able to trade ideas and get introduced to different kinds of rap. It was the beginning of the de-regionalism of the game

Shouts out to everybody who contributed to this shit

For whatever reason, I always noticed his extra positive outlook. Probably because it was different than mine and I always told him that he "likes everything" as far as music goes.

It just seemed like he always found a way to appreciate something which is something I don't do.

And I truly appreciated that about him.

Rest in peace homie!

Good reminder, too, that the folks we interact with have lives and struggles that are often invisible to us... let's choose our words wisely.

From 2003-2006, about 90% of my music collection came from his AIM getfile, which he left open even to strangers like me, I guess just so he could share any and all awesomeness he came across with everybody. In real life I could front like I was always up on the latest stuff when really I was just getting all my music from Menpyhel7. He was wholly responsible for my UGK phase of 2004, and my re-discovery of three-6 mafia and my ongoing Big KRIT fandom. I take OKplayer opinions with a grain of salt, but when he said I needed to check out something, I immediately gave it a listen.

Basically he was the ideal hip-hop critic, bad spelling and all. I always checked to see his opinion on whatever the hottest new album was, which was probably unnecessary since he always seemed to be so positive and excited about everything. A bright spot in an online world of constant negativity. It's crazy how somebody you never met can still leave handprints on your life.
